Given that this digest is supposed to be purely Psion related, and given that the common concensus was that all talk of war should be kept out, I suggest that people who blatantly disregard the wishes of the Digestees and who resort to pathetic insults of others, should be removed from the list of recipients. I hope that others will back me up on this topic.

Subject: C700 Price

--

It is also touted as having 32 mb of RAM but 18 mb is devoted to the OS leaving you with 14 mb of user RAM, which is about 1 mb less the Psion has available.

--

I have an 8MB Revo, a 28MB RevoPlus and a Sharp C700, and somehow the above comparison doesn't make much sense to me. The C700 has 32MB of RAM, but also 64MB of FlashROM. All data is backed up in ROM, so unlike the Revo, a dead battery doesn't result in any data loss. In addition, it can use SD cards, MMC cards, CF cards and I believe also the IBM microdrive. So in terms of memory, the C700 can handle far, far more than a Revo, if only for the fact that the Revo has a fixed capacity, whereas the C700 is unlimited when you take memory cards into consideration.

--

It also has no Mac G4 connectivity at all although "they are working on it".

---

Yes, connectivity is poor at present. I must confess, I've been using my C700 as a standalone computer, so I don't bother synching with anything. If desktop connectivity is a major issue, then a Psion or Palm is definitely a better bet. With the C700 I can read native Word files, RTF files, PDF files, Excel files (with multiple sheets), view JPGs, GIFs, movies (in MPG format), and listen to MP3 files. It can handle basically anything I throw at it, so there is no need for me to synch. If I do want to exchange data, I can do it all quickly via wireless. Plus I can easily beam data among my Palm, Psion and Zaurus.

--

Also, for those of you looking for Wi-Fi and 802.11 connectivity, using this will drain the c700 battery in 20 to 30 minutes. There's more information at http://avi.freedman.net/zaurus/slc700.html

--

Yes and no. Some wireless cards can drain the built in battery in 30 minutes, others report usage of more than 1 1/2 hours. I do a lot of wireless surfing at cafes with the C700, and the little battery extender I built with four AA batteries significantly improves battery life, so the C700 is fine for a night of surfing fun. A friend joined me the other day for some wireless surfing and brought his notebook, which he claimed would get two hours of battery life. After 20 minutes his notebook was dead, and the C700 was still showing 100% power. The fact is, there's no way I can surf wirelessly with the Revo, although I would love to do so.

--

I think I'll wait a while on this one.

---

Whatever - different strokes for different folks. For me, the C700 is the best thing I've seen since the Revo. I get a thrill every time I use the C700.

Subject: Re: C700 (to Rolf Brunsting)

Dear Rolf,

RB>One of the smaller laptops, like the Sony model mentioned, can be as much a sucessor to a Psion Revo as the Sharp C700.

At what point should a laptop be considered small enough to be considered a Revo successor? A C700 has about the same form factor as the Revo, and like the Revo, is pocketable. The Sony C1VM is not.

RB>That's where you're making the mistake. That this is the EPOC Digest, populated by people who don't use a Microsoft operating system and applications on their handheld computer, doesn't say that much on the importance of compatibility with Microsoft's desktop applications. You don't know, for example, how many of us don't use their Psion for certain jobs because of the limited compatibility.

If you read my previous posting on the C700 vs Sony C1VN, you will see that I mention more than once, that I am one of those who would like to have 100% MS compatibility, and no doubt many on this list would like to have full MS compatibility as well. There are certainly more work we could have done. However, it is not the overriding factor; because if it was, I would have chosen a PDA/Handheld PC that does have that compatibility, and not my Psion.

RB>Quite simple. With a sentence like "I suspect they would take the Symbian OS any day over 100% MS compatibility if it means using MS OSes" you're placing the operating system before anything else. Combine this with a string of negative value judgements on Microsoft's operating systems and we're back at the semi-religious operating system wars of old. The wars between the MacOS Cult, the Linux Order and the Windows Fellowship.

I beg to differ, the operating environment of our PDAs/Handheld PCs is an important factor, and in the case of MS (or more accurately Windows CE and its variants) many have found that they would prefer NOT to use it, having found other environments they prefer. Also, what is wrong is making comparison between OSes and finding one is better in respect to one's requirements? This does not mean snobbery. I have used Palms, PocketPC and EPOC operating system, and to me, the EPOC is my OS of choice, I feel that it is the best environment for my PDA needs. Likewise, my Laptop runs Windows 2000, instead of another platform because it is the best choice available, I would take it over Linux any day. Does that also make me a snob of Linux? I think not. I certainly do not see any "semi-religious operating system wars" going on here.

Koi Hin

Hi Antof course),

I am sorry I thought that you unintentionally insulted the French when actually you meant to!

But there must be a website devoted to such pettiness, perhaps the homepage is <http://www.prejudice.co.uk/imaheadbanger.html>. One thing's for certain, whilst you are perfectly entitled to such pathetic views they have no place on this *international* digest about pocket computers and such.

Though I doubt you will apologise to Stephane, Nicole and the other French subscribers, keeping your opinions to their proper home would indeed be better behaviour. But I doubt you'll do that either. If you continue to post such unnecessary insults few here will reply to any honest questions you may have, fewer still will have any inclination to help you. You have been warned.

But you are entitled to your opinions. It's called "Freedom of Speech". I doubt you believe it should extend beyond yourself.

If you do have the grace to apologise, though, I'll applaud your action.

This may help if you do manual backups. But the Psion puts a System folder

on any CF as soon as you install anything and even sooner, I believe. Just

as the Mac writes some partly invisible things on any medium, no matter how

formatted.

Otoh, my experience was that this trick won't help. It also results in

longer file-names and file-admin seems to be the problem.

> the idea of copying the opx files into a directory which is not in the root

> C/system of the flash to see if that solves the problem maybe Vlad can try

I am loathe to experiment more, as my CF cards are all meaningfully employed

and I am ok w. the status quo (see below).

Copying opx-es was never a problem - but I do not know what in the System

*is*. I doubt that it is the data itself, rather the data-admin. This would

need a programmer's expertise...

What I now do is a double backup to two CFs I never use for transfer to Mac.

A 16MB card is dedicated for transfer. Another, the original, 16MB CF

contains the System installer, OPX-sys-es and the Backup software. Other CFs

with books, maps still occasionally get corrupted, but nothing or not much

is lost in this way.

I would though like to know what triggered the spectaculöar corruption I was

seeing when I was trying to backup per copy to the Mac...

All,

I recently acquired a 2nd-hand copy of Psion Monopoly.  Now I understand what all the fuss was about - it's darned addictive.  Certainly a full-screen, colour version on the S7/nB would be great (some of the texts are very difficult to read).  In the absence of Steve Godfrey's patch, I'm working on at least a colour patch for the game.  Still won't be full-screen of course but the colour helps quite a bit.  It's about 50% done.  Will let you all know when it's done.

It was cras, bigotted, and racist.  I for one would recommend that you

be unsubscribed from this Digest immediately as you have clearly abused

the freedom that being a subscriber permits.  Perhaps the BNP have an

email digest that you could join.  I was tempted to rant further but

frankly you're not worth the effort...

To everyone else:

Actually this raises a bigger issue.  I have avoided being drawn into

some of the other 'heated' discussions as - generally speaking - I

believe that it's sometimes a healthy thing to test the limits of your

freedom.  There is a time for tolerance however and a time for action

and - unfortunately - I would propose that the idiot above has gone

beyond the reasonable limits whereby we are a self-regulating Digest.

Can I ask that the admin. team be prepared to moderate The Digest?

I'm not suggesting that they pre-read every posting prior to publication

- that would take even more of their already selflessly-given time.

Rather I would suggest a '2 strikes and your out' approach (3 seems

overly generous - but please argue if you think I'm wrong).  After the

first transgression is published the transgressor receives an email (either on-Digest or off) warning them.  After the 2nd, they're out.  Of

course, in blatent cases such as above, I think that there's no place

for tolerance.  Out.

Thoughts?

Jan,

My wife has a netbook which she uses as her only computer, for email, web and word processing. Because I do web audio and video, I have an Apple iBook, but my main computer is still a 5mx. Why? because it fits in my pocket. I can't imagine depending on a computer bigger than that.

By the way I was suprised to see the discussion about start-times; my iBook switches on as soon as the lid is opened and is ready for use in 2 or 3 seconds. I agree that instant on is vital, I'm always grabbing the computer, looking up one specific thing and shutting it again.

Re. S7 v. 5MX - I own both and use both. The S7 is used for most functions, but is not as easy to carry with you as the 5MX. The 5MX I use mainly in the car with Route- and Streetplanner connected to a GSM, sitting in the car stand. Try and do that with a S7 without a flat dashboard. I also use it from time to time when I need a smaller unit with me which I can carry on my belt and have my hands free. And most important of all, it is my back up unit in case something would go wrong with my S7.

Hi -

Mark Deppe mentioned that he's been receiving free GPRS WAP access via Vodafone (UK).

Vodafone has been offering free GPRS browsing to all customers with Vodafone live! mobiles (i.e. built-in camera, GPRS?compatible etc.) but this offer - which only applies to Vodafone's own WAP pages - is due to end after 31 May 2003. Sadly I'm not able to offer much further help about settings etc. as I sent my Psion off to be fixed by SRS in Germany at the end of February and it's never returned...

PS: In case anyone wonders, the logic behind sending my 5mx from the UK to Germany was that SRS offered a 'more reliable' screen cable repair.

FAT is simple, yes...

As for 'worked well'...

A floppy drive would be slow anyway, so why bother.

But when they got Hard drives they didn't have to use FAT there, too.

One of the reasons for Win95 being so slow, and slowing down day by day is the inefficient FAT system. And by then FAT really should have been replaced.

And don't tell me that they didn't have any alternatives, for they did!

It was M$ who made the HPFS file system for OS/2, which not only is sorted, allows long filenames and rapid searching, but is by nature defragmented!

> It's the success of the IBM PC that has given us a few side-effects,

> like FAT still being with us for compatibility reasons.

Except for an old 386 I haven't used FAT on anything but floppies for years...

My office PC runs WinNT(uses NTFS which is barely better than FAT) and my home PC runs OS/2 with HPFS (And recently also the JFS file system)

Even my Iomega Zip Disks are formatted with HPFS...

(It's only used for 'rapid' backup of the OS/2 PC)

The only reason for M$ to keep FAT is that they didn't bother to update the boot loader in DOS/Win95 to handle anything else...

That, and the WinNT and W2K install programs can't format a HDD to NTFS, only FAT... (You can select NTFS, but it'll use FAT, then convert later)

---

About the talk of 'improved S5mx'...

Did you all know that the S5/S5mx only has ONE serial device, supporting both the RS232 and the IRDa port?

The netBook on the other hand has 3 physical devices, supporting each their own port...

(RS232/IRDa/PCMCIA)

As for newer and more compact circuits, as I understand it, the ARM710 in the S5 already contains, not only the CPU core, but also the LCD control circuitry and memory management elements.

Unless the CF interfacing circits are in it, I can't think of any other major part to integrate or compact.

And producing a new ARM chip is expensive.

As for batteries...

My Sony LIP-8  Li-ion battery for my MD player is rated at 3.7V/750mA and isn't much bigger than an AA cell. (gives three times the power of a NiCad cell, or slightly more than a Nimh cell, probably about 8 - 10 Hours in an S5)

This is a 'standard' cell that can be bought in most HIFI stores.

(If they sell Sony equipment :-)

Moving the hinge?

NO!

The hinge arrangement on the S5 allows it to take AA cells WITHOUT being too thick. Other computers of the same thickness either have to use AAA, button cells or weird rechargeables.

The Geofox One solved this problem by being so wide that there was room for a hinge between the batteries.

Bluetooth?

Yes, please...

You can now get 'one-chip' solutions, so it should be possible to integrate it into the design. It may need a reshuffle and an extra PC on top of the motherboard, but I think there's just enough room for it. After all, there's that battery charger PCB that was sold by some German company.( I think.)

Dropping the serial port?

Won't save any PCB space since the port is integrated into the ARM core...

:-)

Something similar applies in the Netherlands as well. The condition is, however, that the use of another registration is considered to be a temporary measure. The person or company in question can't stop the attempts to obtain a registration key through the normal channels.

<< Can you point me to the penal code section for any of the countries you named that would make it a criminal offense to transmit a link to a web site obtained from public information? >>

As the Internet is a publication and distribution medium you need to reckon with legislation in the various countries on what you're allowed to publish. The freedom to publish isn't always a total freedom. A number of conditions can apply, the most familiar one being copyright. You're not allowed to publish Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' in the Netherlands, for example, nor to distribute it.

There has been a court case in the Netherlands concerning a student who had put 'The Anarchist's Cookbook' on his section of the university's web servers reserved for students, lecturers, etc. A number of groups involved with the so-called 'hard left' made links from their web sites to this text. It was these links which finally betrayed the student. The court ruled that the student had to remove the text and gave him a conditional fine to prevent him transferring the text to another web site. The other 'hard left' sites also received a conditional fine and were ordered to remove any link from their sites to other prohibited information. The court was of the opinion that these links made this information an integral part of their sites.

As for France, AOL was ordered by a French court to prevent French citizens access to US web sites selling Nazi memorabilia through AOL's system. The sale of this stuff is prohibited in France and the court judged that AOL allowed people to buy it.

There was a similar case in Germany concerning linked access to certain web sites. I don't recall the details clearly enough to give you a good description of it.

<< There are some pretty draconian laws in the US here regarding child pornography and even transmitting a link to a child porn site that was obtained from something like Google wouldn't be illegal >>

Well ... can a person post a message on Usenet or some other on-line discussion forum mentioning the URL of child pornography web site or the e-mail address of a person who sells such material? Is Google completely innocent when its search engine gives the URLs to child pornography web sites its automatic web crawlers have collected?

Dette er mitt svar til lista:

Your comments are not even remotely amusing. You might have got away with this if you had apologised right away, but all you have accomplished now is to let 800 odd Psion users know that you are a first class asshole. I must congratulate you, as in all my years on the digest (this one and the old UPS5) as well as several other e-mail groups, nobody has managed to do that quite as efficiently.

You don't need much in the way of a spine to sit at your own computer keyboard and insult people miles away. I can assure you that the insistence of the French and others that international law should be followed when dealing with a certain problem-state does not come from a lack of spine, but let's not open that can of worms on what is supposed to be an EPOC list.

Once a bigot has grown beyound a certain age there usually isn't any way back so I don't have much hope of changing your mind about the French. I can only assume it comes from a lack of personal experience as is usually the case with bigotry. I do however hope that you will gain some personal experience very soon. I'm sure something can be arranged.

I don't believe in policing the list by throwing people out simply because we don't like them or their views any more than I believe in attacking a country simply because we don't like their government. After all, there are a lot of both people and governments around the world that are disliked by someone somewhere. All I can do is appeal to all list members to completely ignore ALL future postings from Antony whatever the subject. I will do so starting NOW. Finally, I'd like to make it clear that like everybody else, Antony is entitled to his opinions. It is his cowardly and insulting way of expressing them that offends me. (Oh, and in case anyone wondered, I'm NOT French.)

Oh, and if anyone wishes to discuss this further with me, please let's do so off list. Now let's get back to EPOC matters.

Subject: Mac via USB; SanDisk CF card; "heat".

Dear all

There's been a lot of interesting stuff about CF cards recently.  Here's my slightly woebegone bit.

1.  I tried backing up to a Mac iBook some time ago, via USB and a SanDisk ImageMate.  The results were so terrifyingly grotesque that I gave it up, pronto.  Having read various messages over the last few weeks, I just *might* summon up the courage to try again, but ....

2.  I'm mightily disappointed in a SanDisk 64MB CF card bought last week (a mere 55AUD nowadays!) to replace a Lexar 32MB card in my MC218.  The write speed is incredibly slow: e.g., to save an edited entry in a Data file (109kb), from pressing Ctrl-S to the reappearance of the record, takes 16 seconds, instead of the 2-5 in any other disk.  My S7, and my fallback S5, produced exactly the same results.  Taking advice from Martin Guthrie's lovely website, I tried a couple of different formats using Smart Format. No joy - though perhaps I tried the wrong combinations of FAT & sectors. Can anyone suggest why a SanDisk card would behave this way?  And could there be a remedy?  The Lexar, and Kingmax 64MB and 128MB cards, behave beautifully.

Subject: Synchronising outlook /5MX

I have just got Outlook on my works PC to synchronize with Agenda.

In Outlook I can key in where the meeting is, but synchronise won't put that in my Psion's Agenda.

And of course ideally I would like to be enter appointment locations on the Psion, and have that information ported on synchronization.

Is there a way to resolve this?

Subject: Printing via WiFi LAN contnued ....

Thank you very much for your answers.

I learned, that the HPLaserJet JD has a built-in webserver and FTP server.

So I gave it a fix IP address, and started FTP clients to shoot files.

my experiences:

- from PC with WS-FTP client works as a dream (print to file and send file -upload - to the given port)

- from nB with nFTP: I can NOT login. The login script runs along, it seems OK, but at the and an information window appears: "Total loss of precision"

????????? What does it mean?

I was sure it was the nB, too slow or something, but as a last chance I dowloaded RMRFTP and tried with it. I expected nothing, because I read everywhere that nFTP was much more stable (that's the reason why I had registered it rather than RMRFTP well before it was included in the OS 158 :(((.

- from nB with RMRFTP: it connects and uploads like a treat. :)

Printing : from word it is OK, from PDF+ no letters, only lines and graphics appear. Any suggestions?????

(I tried both the built-in LJ4, the and the "A. Johnson" PCL5: LJ4 and the "PostScript 35 fonts" driver, no avail)

Subject: Re: Revo docking station for sale

If there is anyone interested in buying an extra psion revo docking cradle? It would be useful as a replacement or extra for home or office use.

I will sell it off for about £20 including packaging & postage to the UK, or any other similar or suitable offers.

Please let me know off digest if you are interested or else I will go to ebay.

Thanks,

Aleck

Subject: Bigotry on the Digest

As I'm currently the operator in charge I'm sorry that I've failed to prevent this "war" & "insult" issue getting out of hand. Stephane, Nicole and the other French are fine people, so maybe I should have censured the last insulting posting from Antony - I don't know. As Martin says he abused the freedom of speech in an unacceptable way and I fully understand the wishes to kick him out.

However, I can't do that by myself as that kind of matters must be done in consensus with The Epoc Digest Team members. I'll consult the others to discuss how we should proceed.

Antony, you're fully entitled to have your opinion about the French or anything else, but the Epoc Digest isn't the right place to express it. Hence I'll censure ALL future postings from you if they contain ANY insulting material.

Now, let's go back to what this Digest is all about - Epoc matters :-)
