Subject: Message to Rolf Brunsting: have you received my PM? / Spam from Yahoo

Dear Rolf,

I was just wondering if you received my message concerning our compatriote programmer who might be interested to take over the duties/development for MBM View?

I am starting to think that my message has been caught by some spam trap.

Dear all,

I also heavily suspect Yahoo. I am only subscribed on one public Yahoo l, a good one!) and its language is French. For the rest this e-mail address is only used for English and Dutch (also rarely in public) and for private communications. Guess what? I now receive *French* spam!

Lest one of my French friends did something stupid I can safely blame Yahoogroupes.

I have been advised to use something called Cloudmark. Apparently this is an internet-based spam filter that operates on the fact that its members tell it that some addresses are spam addresses. Unfortunately, it seems that this internet database cannot be operated by a Psion.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden

Susan Katz Hoffman wrote (ED #237): "This is a great idea [cancelling alarms]". Is there a way to create a Macro to do this easily?"

In David Lir's posting (Subject: Restart (4 Eric)) I think you find the answer. AlarmPlus (http://www.mypsion.ru/AlarmPlus.php) is definitely a must-have application. Among other things, it will cancel the alarm after a specified time. And you don't have to do any programming. My colleagues at work were very happy when I installed the program.

Dear Derek,

<< My last phone was an Ericsson PF768. I'd be grateful for suggestions of what to replace it with ... >>

I think it's best that you contact T-Mobile, as One2One is currently known. There's a good chance that T-Mobile allows you to get a new phone at a reduced price because (a) the PF768 is medieval model by mobile phone standards and (b) that you've used T-Mobile's services for quite some time without changing phone. I can mention a few suggestions for a new phone but T-Mobile may have a list of phones you can choose from. Mention them and I'm sure Digest members will give you the advice to allow you to pick the best one.

There is a different version for different Psions.  I've used it on my 5mx for a long time, showing a chart of battery voltage and hours.  I also use it on my Revo+ and have never had any battery problems as reported by many users.  It displays number of hours to battery 10% level and number of days of inactive use left.  It's also used on my 7 and was the first app I installed on my new netBook.  Here it displays a chart of the battery voltage with time and an indicator which is a big improvement on the built in one.  There is also an hour counter for the total time used on battery and another for mains.  Using this chart it is possible to get a very close indication of time before a recharge is required.

I just tap the 4th User app to bring up the display.

Dear David,

First, could you please use clear indicators for the text you're quoting from other messages to prevent confusion.

<< And we're happy to be able to share in such useful additions to our little EPOC world ... >>

Personally, I have some doubts whether a macro that does what a handful of applications already do is really useful to the EPOC community.

Subject: reducing photo size

Has anyone tried to reduce a digital photo size with a Psion? I take pictures with my digital camera onto a CF card, I can view these with MBMView on my netBook, but would like to reduce them to a size small enough to be e-mailed, say from 2048 x 1536 pixels to 640 x 480. MBMView cannot do this. I have Nconvert that does allow me to do a "conversion" to a smaller image size, but it gives me an "out of memory" error, even though I have 9.8 Mb free on C. The original picture I am working on is 641k. Suggestions? Workarounds?

Bought my first Psion (5) to play text adventure games in a portable manner. I'm not a good player, but love the stories, they are well written. On the 5 to XBooks you can play text games written for the following "engines, emulators and interpreters" --  Z-Code (Zork type games), TADS 2, Hugo, Magnetic Scrolls, Level 9, Spectrum, C 64, Apple II and MS-DOS emulators/interpreters.

http://www.bioeddie.co.uk/main/emulators.htm provides many of the emulators, and

http://ifarchive.org/   contains many free games and most of the emulators/interpreters. The Newsgroup - rec.games.int-fiction has discussions about old and new games. 90% of the games now freeware, including the much loved -- Hitch Hikers Guide...

Carrying a couple games, and for me the solutions, makes waiting for appointments, friends, the train, bus, ferry, much more enjoyable.

Dear Rolf and everyone,

Thanks for your time & reply - obviously the best thing to do is to keep filling up that 128Mb disk.

The reason I ask (and I can't remember whether I said this previously) is 'cos I've had problems with my MalayNetBook occasionally failing to see my D drive.  I wanted to install programs so that when the D disk "disappears" it causes minimal hassle.

The annoyingly useful AlarmPlus is on my D disk, and I want to reinstall to C, (then I won't get the message when D disappears).  However, Alarm+ isn't mentioned in the Add/Remove Programs.  Any ideas how I can safely uninstall it?  (I'll probably end up backing up any needed data files and formatting D.)

Re:  Infrared

Thanks once again - I think my answer lies in needing occasional soft resets.  It's a pity - having moved from a 5mx where a crash is unthinkable, I'm resetting a couple of times a day with the MNetBook.

Thanks for the modem settings for the T68 as well - I'm pretty sure that they're OK - but I'll give 'em the once over.  Also, to improve surfing, I think I'll probably head over and get the latest version of Opera.  (Even though, from memory, not everyone has been 100% happy with it.)

Re:  Digest

Are there technical probs with the Digest?  Are the Digests being sent out daily?  Just wondering...

Also - How does the search feature on psioneering.co.uk work?  I searched for "5mx", and it returned no matches.  What bit of the digest does it search?

Re:  Drinks

I live in North London, and work in Central London.  Would there be enough people (5?) interested in meeting in a pub?  Would we have anything to talk about?  Would we be sober enough to care?  Rolf and Trygve - do you want to increase your Air Miles?

Lots of questions... lots of questions...

Subject: P800 verses 9210

I found Rolf Brunting's review of his P800 very interesting to read.  I'm very pleased to hear it doesn't suffer from the 9210's problem of handling large emails, such as the Digest itself.  I'd guess that the larger available working memory must make the difference here and should also make a difference when running resource hungry apps.  Unfortunately, IMO this is where the 9210 falls flat on its face - it simply does not have enough RAM to do this.  Even just an extra 4Mb to match the P800 would make SO much difference and would transform this otherwise very capable PDA.  I'm now thinking of possibly getting a P800 myself (especially as Rolf seems to be getting on quite well now with the handwriting recognition) but I've always been put off in the past by anything with no keyboard.  I have four questions:

1 Is it possible to keep say 8 to 10 apps open at once without continually hitting "out of memory" messages (not possible on the 9210 unfortunately)?

2 How good is the quality of the speakerphone (it's very good on the 9210)?

3 Does opening the Web browser automatically close all other open apps (as on the 9210) to give as much RAM as possible available for web browsing?

4 Can you use the mp3 player and carry out other operations simultaneously (as you can do on the 9210)?

No doubt I'll think of many more questions soon ;-)

Hello group,

I am sorry, but I think I miss the link between a Psion and the Dilbert of 29/4. However, I liked the Dilbert of 27/4 that explains to us how exactly Psion got us to form self-help groups such as this Digest.
