Subject: Problems with switching on
Hi fellow Psioneers,
My 5mx has recently been giving me a bit of grief with its switching on. I've noticed when the batteries get down a bit that it won't always do it and it's usually a sign I need to change them. But it's been getting progressively worse and today it refused to switch on at all - a bit of a worry as I don't have a very recent backup (since switching to OS X I haven't been able to connect it to my desktop machine even when booting under OS 9). I changed the batteries over to brand new ones and still got nothing.
When I got home I plugged it in to the power adaptor and it started first pop. After it had been plugged in a while it would start from the batteries as well. It was very weird.
Any suggestions? I haven't tried a soft reset. At the best of times I find it unnerving but without the facility to back up it doesn't bear thinking about...
Thanks in advance

PS I'd love to have a drink with folk in Central London where I worked all last year but have recently moved back to New Zealand. Bad timing!

Subject: SanDisk CF; IR; S7 battery; S7 DIMM; psiMind
Dear All
1. Updating my moan about SanDisk CF 64MB card: the shop that sold it to me has exchanged it for a SanDisk Ultra 128MB card at just twice the cost of the smaller one. It works very nicely and is, I think, still quite good value (AUD109).
2. Another moan. plBeam 1.3 crashed my S7 (which, after I complained, PsiNT admitted that it would) though it worked on an MC218. I installed plBeam 1.1 on the S7 - and the Ericsson crashed when I tried to transfer a file from it to the S7. The solution (so far) has been to remove all plBeam from both computers and perform soft resets. I'll try v. 1.1 on both and report if it succeeds: but I'm beginning, first, to wonder if I really need any plBeam, and, second, to gnash teeth for having paid for 1.3.
3. For Oz readers: Widget Australia are selling S7 batteries for AUD309 (when I looked a couple of weeks ago). This, amazingly, is cheaper than Expansys or Clove, from whom I've previously bought machines, etc. (But their prices for CF disks are *rather* steep.)
4. Can anyone tell me where to get a memory expansion DIMM for the S7, and how much it is likely to cost?
5. I've discovered psiMind and Ken Golding will receive his well-deserved £10. It is the only outliner program I know for EPOC (cf. Topix for S3): outlining in Word is useless for "brainstorming" (if in fact one's brain can stand storming). psiMind has limitations but is truly useful for several purposes. Strongly recommended.
Cheers -------- Bruce Knox

Re.: reducing photo size - I don't know what camera you use but are you not able to reduce the size of the image when taking the picture ? My camera has a hig, medium and low setting, the low one specifically meant for emailing images.
Answer to: Woody B
Re. text adventure games - Sorry but you talk to a very ignorant person here. What are text adventure games ?
Answer to: Richard
Re. Infrared - It should not be necessary to do daily soft resets. I suggest you close all applications and work with nothing open but the one you work on. If that does not solve the problem you need to send it back under guarantee. If it does, leave programs open one by one at a time until it starts to misbehave and than you know the cause of your problem. It takes a bit of discipline and attention but worth the effort IMHO.
Re. Sending of digest - Yes, there are some problems with the sending of the digest due to a change of policy of Compuserve not allowing the use of BCC's without the compusever email address in the sender box (I suppose protection against spam). We are in the process of solving it and an official message will follow in the coming days. The digest is only sent daily if there are enough messages, otherwise once every other day or so (also depending a little on personal schedule of the operator at the time).
Re. Drinks - There are regular palmtop meetings for all palmtop platforms (these were first Psion meetings but that was some time ago ....). Look at the website of LIB3. I live and work in North West London but could travel into town.

Thanks Rick Gillyon;
for correcting (# 240 ) my ugly "virii"
<Quote from :
http://www.cknow.com/vtutor/vtplural.htm
<For the purists, in Latin, there is a rarely-used plural form: virus, viri (neuter)
Forms: almost always restricted to nominative and accusative singular; generally singular in Lucretius, ablative singular in Lucretius)
The point of this is that even in Latin the form "viri" is rarely used. The singular form is used in most every instance. (This is from the Oxford Latin Dictionary.)
So, when considering the Latin: "virii" is incorrect and "viri" was almost never used.
Despite the fact there was little use for the plural form, there is another reason why "viri" was rarely used. The most common Latin word for "man" is "vir" with "viri" being its plural in the form used as the subject of a sentence. Thus, since "men" as the subject of a sentence would be used far more often than "venoms" (virus means venom) the "viri" word was most commonly seen as the plural of "man."
Bottom line: Don't try to make up words using a false Latin plural form. Since the word virus in its English form is now used then the English plural (viruses) should be used. >End Quote>

My Malay netbook screen does not seem to want to stay calibrated. I have not quite figured out when it changes but at some point it does. Is the only solution to recalibrate it every time it wanders offcenter? Seems like someone commented on this before, but I do not recall if there was a workaround.
I still love my 5mx, but the keyboard on the netBook is the best of all computers I have ever used. My wife loves her netBook. The Revo was kind of a bust for us (too small for her eyesight; not as versatile as the 5mx for me). If anyone is interested in buying a Revo, feel free to email me offlist.

I agree with Kevin Collins opinion on Subject: Re: Where to install apps?
>>>....yes, it *is* better to install OPXs on C: (a) in my experience, the apps in D will work a little faster...... and ..... installation may superimpose an .opx file over an existing one in D, and then on uninstallation remove it altogether........
Also, I would advise placing your System\Recogs folder on C: if you let it in D, it is quite likely to cause problems (even hard resets) on removing and repacing the CF card....<<<
I didn't notice any problems after moving any system folders (Controls, Install, libs, OPl, OPM, OPX, Libs, recog....) from D (E) drive(s) to C.
I only see advantages in doing so :
- Less "User" errors when D disk is not (re)inserted
- No more worry about which is the best place for all these "secondary" system files each time I install app.
- less risk of incompatibility between two similar file in D and C.
- One only disk backup is enough to keep a whole recoverable system.
- and... things seem to run speedier (even if as it is known ER5 starts using system files from E first, then D and lastly C)

Vulcan PC
Remember the Psion 5 organiser with its small, but usable screen and keyboard?. Due to be launched is a PC not unlike the old PDA. Its one inch-thick mini PC features a 5.8" screen, 20GB hard drive and 256MB of Ram. It has a full qwerty keyboard, runs Windows XP and features integrated Wi-Fi. The price is expected to be around £1500.

Subject: Screen fix, contact sync problems
Following my claims to have fixed my screen cable and made modifications
to the chassis my screen cable lasted 4 months and then died horribly
with a massive crack right through the cable. Just so others know, it
seems most other fix it websites say the same, in that any cable repair
only lasts a matter of months.
It seems a new cable is the answer - but in my case a new machine, the
Toshiba e755 pocket PC machine. As long as I don’t use it too much, I
only need to reset it once per day. It works ok, but it is slow to
enter data with handwriting recognition - and inaccurate. And the agenda
is no where near as comprehensive or useful as the epoc version. Now I
just need to get the WIFI working....
CAN ANYONE HELP ME? When I sync my 5mx with outlook, I only get 186 of
the 600+ contacts transferred to outlook. Can some one tell me how to
correct this - or where to find help?
Thanks Wayne

Dear Richard,
<< The reason I ask (and I can't remember whether I said this previously) is 'cos I've had problems with my MalayNetBook occasionally failing to see my D drive >>
When there are a few application you always want to have with you, irrespective of a memory card being present in the D and E-drives, the solution is to install them on the C-drive, including their associated OPXs.
<< However, Alarm+ isn't mentioned in the Add/Remove Programs >>
a) Make the System folder visible (System screen - > Menu -> Tools -> Preferences),
b) Open the System folder,
c) Open the Apps folder,
d) Delete the directory belonging to AlarmPlus.
This may leave one or more OPXs belonging to MBMView orphaned on the D-drive. When you know which OPXs these are you can delete them manually from the OPX folder within the System folder.
<< - I think my answer lies in needing occasional soft resets. It's a pity - having moved from a 5mx where a crash is unthinkable ... >>
When you had the Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0 installed on the 5mx and have installed it on the netBook as well it's best to remove it.
<< Also, to improve surfing, I think I'll probably head over and get the latest version of Opera. (Even though, from memory, not everyone has been 100% happy with it.) >>
I've had no problems with Opera 5.14 on my Series 5mx, MC218 and Series 7.
<< Are the Digests being sent out daily? >>
I think this depends on (a) the number of messages coming in and (b) how busy the person on duty is.
<< I live in North London, and work in Central London. Would there be enough people (5?) interested in meeting in a pub? Would we have anything to talk about? Would we be sober enough to care? Rolf and Trygve - do you want to increase your Air Miles? >>
I'm thinking of going to London for an extended weekend break, simply to get away from it all for a few days. haven't made definite plans and/or reservations but will inform you when I'll be in London.

Dear Daniele,
<< Has anyone tried to reduce a digital photo size with a Psion? >>
I have, using the same MBMView you refer to. The procedure is as follows:
a) Open the photo in MBMView
b) Use the Zoom function to reduce the size (Menu -> Edit -> Zoom)
c) Save the photo as a new file (Menu -> File -> Save -> Save as)
MBMView doesn't use smart resizing, like bicubic resampling, so that the resuling photo won't be as good as the original.

There's a strange bug that results in Psions resetting themselves when (a) automatic switch-off is set to a time longer than 30 minutes and (b) infrared communication is used.

There are a number of EPOC apps to use with a GPS. I have an old Garmin 75 and an eMap.
Some GPS receivers can record waypoints supplied by a connected NMEA device. The location and callsign of ham radio stations are received by my Kenwood radio(s) which can be connected to the GPS and automatically saved and displayed on the GPS screen; just like manually entered waypoints.
PsiGar5 can be used to enter waypoints manually - much quicker than on the GPS keypad. PsiGar5 can also download waypoints from the GPS, edit them or add to them, and then upload back to the GPS. All the other data in your GPS can also be down/up loaded, including your track logs for later displaying on Realmaps.
RealMaps can display maps and add the GPS plot of your movements.
Locations is very useful for manually converting BNG <-> Lat/Long WGS84 <-> Lat/Long OSGB36 etc.
Overlay Maker is ideal if you have Route Planner and/or Street Planner (CityMaps). It converts between the overlay format and a text format in Lat/Long or BNG. Better than the DOS program as BNG is now supported.

<Surely you are not saying that the 9210 is incapable of handling emails the size of the digest?. I appreciate that memory is tight on the 9210 but if you keep as many applications as possible on the memory card and shut everything else down with a task manager surely it would work okay?>
Someone else on the Digest owning a 9210 agreed with me on this being a real problem (forgot who). It's not so much that it can't open them - more that it will take a minute or longer to open them and then, when you're halfway through reading one, the 9210 will just freeze and then would need a reset. The 9210 cannot not store files and applications in RAM as on a Psion (this is why it has no backup battery and can be hard reset at will with no loss of data). The RAM is all used for program execution duties so it matters not a jot whether applications are stored on C (flash internal memory) or D (memory card). The original 9210 had 4Mb of internal flash memory, the later 9210i was upgraded to 16Mb but alas, Nokia did not increase the RAM allocation (which was a real shame). Also, unlike say a S5 Classic with 8Mb of RAM using just over 1Mb of this for o/s "overheads" leaving around 6.8Mb free, the 9210 uses over half of its total amount for this (to keep open essentials on the telephony side such as Telephone, Office, Contacts etc) so there is really only ever about 3.8Mb actually free as "disposable" RAM. So, memory is tighter on a 9210 than some people may initially think :-( Despite this, I still think it's a great alternative to a separate phone/PDA combination. I wonder if D&G Upgrades could squeeze in an extra memory module as they can do on the Psion Revos and 5s?

Subject: three questions: bcc field / contacts fields / italian and englishdictionary
Hello Everybody!
I do have three small problems to deal with.
1) BCC field in a E-mail message
I am looking for a trick for my netBook which may be similar to the "undisclosed recipient" sort of thing.
Therefore, I experimented today sending a message from my netBook to my various mailboxes. I filled in the field "to" with my prime address and wrote the other ones in the BCC field. As soon as I downloaded the messages on my netbook from the remote mailboxes I was surprised to be able to read all the different addresses I wrote in BCC:
On the contrary, I would like to protect the privacy of my customers to whom I will send some info. any ideas?
2) contacts and "contatti"
Before of having a netBook I was using a 5mx (which is actually still useful as a spare machine). the OS was in Italian and all my contacts were stored into the 5mx contacts ("contatti"). They were syncronised with MS outlook. I thought that syncing back from outlook to the netBook could be a good solution. the fact is after syncing I had four fields related to work address that had been misplaced on the netBook.
they are:
town
province
post code
nation
Now they are located just after the notes' field: I would like to shift them back right after the work address, exactly as the ones in the italian 5mx "contatti" file.
any ideas?
3) spell
I would love to have on my netBook both the english dictionary+thesaurus and the italian one (which is included in the italian 5mx). I already have installed Spell X but I do not know how to copy the italian dictionary+thesaurus from the 5mx to the netBook.
any ideas?
thanks in advance.

Subject: New device (OT)
Hi.
Since we're all gadgetfreaks here, I thought I'd mention a very interesting new device I spotted in the Irish Mirror (newspaper). In fact, it's so new it isn't even on the market yet.
Quoting from the article:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Store MP3's, digital pictures, video or computer files on this ultimate gadget from Archos.
Launching at the end of June, the 400-quid uber gadget is Archos's first storage device to have a big colour screen.
You can still plug it into a TV, PC or speakers and watch or listen to stuff, but now it has its own screen.
It comes in either 20 or 40 gigs and has a 3 megapixel camera module."
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
This thing is an MP3 player, photo viewer, video clip player and digital camera all in one with a screen that covers almost the whole front of the device. I'm not sure how big it is, but from the photo in The Mirror it looks to be slightly smaller than an opened up Revo and maybe 15-20mm thick.
I assume the quoted price is Sterling and that the article originally came from the UK Mirror. The article doesn't give a name for it, but reading from the one in the photo, it's called the "Archos Video AV 320". This sounds like a very desirable gadget indeed even if the price is a bit out of my league. The price compares very favourably with the iPod which is just an MP3 player. I may keep my eyes open for a second hand one in a couple of years time. The term "camera module" seems to imply that the camera is external.
One thing that struck me. To be able to play back video, the thing must pack a fair bit of processing punch _and_ it has a beautiful big colour screen. Pity they didn't put ER5 on it, supply an external (or clamshell) keyboard and make it a fully fledged EPOC computer. Now THAT would have been a killer device!
PS. As some of you will know, I very recently bought a brand new Creative Nomad Jukebox III 20gig MP3 player. A couple of days ago I came across a second hand Creative DAP 20gig MP3 player at a silly price so I bought it. I'm still trying to decide which one to keep, but either way I do have a 20gig MP3 player half full of music for sale. Contact me off list if anyone is interested.
