Like Keith, I use mine to 'hide' certain icons mainly rather than speed their launch:-

1. CodeSafe, 2. abp5, 3. Porfolio, 4. ExtraBars  (the last one is the exception to prove my own rule above!).

24 new colour icons plus 3 colour patches added a few days ago:- Atmos5, CleanMe, CountSigns, Expenses (+ patch), Find, FlWorld, FlWorld (alternative .aif + patch), FlFinger (+ patch), FreeCrypt, Golf, JTelnet, MailArc, Metro, Michelin (Mrg), MindMap, Movie, Odyssey, OPXscan, Solun, S5Dive, Signit, SpellX, Sticker, TunePal.

This brings the total up to something like 158 replacement colour icons (aif files) and 28 colour patches for programs used on the S7/nB/nP. As always, full details and instructions available on my website: www.pscience5.net

Subject: Text Adventures or Interactive Fiction

Itamar asked about Text Adventures, AKA  Interactive Fiction (IF). I clipped the following from the IF FAQ reached from

http://plover.net/~textfire/raiffaq/welcome.html

"Simply put, the IF genre includes any game that tells a story as part of the game, usually with the player as the protagonist. The actions of the player affect the progress of the story, which often centers around solving puzzles or finding treasure, and leads to an endgame in which   the player 'wins' and completes the adventure. ...

"Interactive fiction traces its electronic roots to a 1977 program named ADVENT, better known as the Colossal Cave Adventure. It was this   program, written by Willie Crowther and Don Woods, that established many of the features now common to the genre, including noun/verb parsing   (e.g. "TAKE BOOK"), mazes ("You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike") and the basis of most later IF in fantasy/adventure settings. Soon after this the game Dungeon, or Zork, was written by MIT grad students; these students were the nucleus of a 1980 startup company called Infocom, which produced a version of Zork for the TRS-80 Model I and other machines. This led to widespread popularity of interactive   fiction games, and was later referred to as the Golden Age of the genre; for several years, Infocom's products were the top-selling games on the market."

You can find many of the old games online and there is a nice community of writers of new games. They have several contests a year, there are e-magazines or websites devoted to reviews of games. I'm terrible at the puzzles, but enjoy the rich, often funny, writing in the adventures. IF plays quite well on the Psion.

Dear Kevin,

PGP is a very good and reliable encryption method. The technology is based on a two key system - a private key and a public key.

First you need to create a private key (Keys -> Create new key) <Ctrl+N>. To get a high level of security you should use 12 characters or more. When the private key is created you'll notice that it is in bold and has a two key symbol in front.

The next step is to create a public key (Keys -> Export key) <Ctrl+S>, the file will have the extension .asc

Now you can email this public key to PSI NT (and anyone else for that matter) and ask for their public key (don't send any details yet!!!). When you receive their public key you must import it into PGP (Keys -> Import key) <Ctrl+O>. You'll notice that PSI NT's key will be in normal and only has a single key symbol in front.

Next thing is to set your preferences in PGP as you'll use one of the in a moment. The two important issues are the encryption and decryption hotkeys. By default they are <Shift+Fn+E> and <Shift+Fn+D>.

Now it's time to write your email. When you are happy with the text, highlight all the text and CUT <Ctrl+X> it into the clipboard. Now you must use the PGP encryption hotkey <Shift+Fn+E> and a list of all available keys pops up. Select the recipient(s) of the message, and always remember to include yourself, otherwise you won't be able to decrypt and read the message ever again. Then a warning shows up, but just ignore it. A message flashes for a second telling that the text has been encrypted - just paste it back in <Ctrl+V> - and voila...

You should also get the colour .aif + patch file for PGP (I can email them to you if you want).

Subject: EPOC Utilities for learning Spanish and Portugese?

Hi.

As I'll probably be spending next winter in the Canaries, I've just started an attempt to teach myself Spanish. Does anyone know of any useful Spanish EPOC software or files for Data, Tomeraider etc? I bought a simple cassette based Spanish course and have recorded it onto my MP3 player and am in the process of putting the contents of the little booklet that came with it into an EPOC data file. I suppose I could also install the MP3 software on my 5mx and run the language course on that.

Next year I'll hopefully be crossing the Atlantic to Brazil, so I'm also looking for useful stuff to learn Portugese.

PC-based interactive language courses aren't much use to me, as I'd rather listen while cycling to the airport and grab a few minutes every now and then between flights a work than sit in front of the PC at home (and listen to the bloody generator running to provide power for it.)

Re. nokia6100 gprs settings - I also use Vodaphone GPRS with a Nokia 6310i. My settings are somewhat different :

Modem:

Speed:  you made a typing error, it is 115200 (not 112500)

Init string :  ATZ (and not AT&F&K4 )

Flow control : Hardware (RTC/CTS) (and not Xon/Xoff)

Modem type : Fixed line (and not mobile)

Internet :

Get IP and DNS : I have both ticked <G> and not unticked

I never have any problems connecting and / or sending. By the way, instead of the pop server of Vodaphone you can of course enter any other pop servers you have an email account with. Usually I have there the pop server of Freeserve where my main private account is with.

Daniele, here is a quick experiment for you. I had 3MB free just now on C when nconvert is running (also 8 other apps running inc.Web and Email). The photo, taken on the top setting of our antique Epson PPC600 camera, was copied from the camera's CF into the Psion's C, and kept there during processing (while the Psion's CF containing apps etc. including nConvert was replaced). The original was 1024x768, 434k. (see http://www.simon-s.net/05070050.JPG for this pic). Nconvert hapily resized it to 200x150, 11k (see http://www.simon-s.net/weepicture.JPG for this pic). I tried making a 640x480 version and got your "Out of Memory" so closed one app to leave 3.5M free in C. The it worked fine. 640x480, 78k. (see http://www.simon-s.net/mediumpicture.JPG for this pic)

My install of nConvert has bugs, not least of which is that when you open the app it offers 2 identical "Image Conversion" lines, and the first attempt at conversion always fails with a "not supported" message. All subsequent operations work perfectly however until the next time the app is closed and relaunched. Maybe you (and I!) simply need to uninstalland reinstall?

If you are still having problems you may email me ONE picture off-list and I will try it on this machine.

All mine have "+0000". I figure it's something to do with one's time zone. I'm in the Pacific time zone of the US, which is -8hrs from GMT. Don't know why it shows up as "+0000"

Subject: Wallpaper

I've asked this before but got no answers. Will try again.

I'm trying to get the original EPOC logo wallpaper to show up on my Malaysian netBook. Connecting my 5mx to my PC, I copied the logo from the 5mx's Z drive to the PC's C drive. Then I connected the netBook to the PC and moved the logo from the PC's C drive to a wallpaper folder on my netBook, but it won't show up on the screen. I have a lot of other wallpaper files in the folder and they show up fine when selected.

Can this be done? How? Maybe a different method of getting the logo to the netBook must be used, but what?

Any ideas anyone?

Hi.

I know this has been mentioned before, but I wasn't paying attention at the time...

Could someone please give a quick overview of what software is required to play MP3 files on a Psion, where to get it, what format the files should be in etc. I'm thinking of using it for a language course. Any resources for audio books in MP3 format would be very welcome too.

Hi.

I'm buying a 5mx pro in bits (with a working motherboard) and intend to try to upgrade my standard 5mx to a pro specs by replacing the motherboard.

As my German is not what it once never was and I don't have access to the web, part of the deal is that the guy selling me the damaged pro should get hold of the UK English ROM image and put that on the 16mb CF that comes with the machine. The only problem is he can't find it! Anyone know where to find it? Anyone have it?

Dear Phil,

<< The usual reason for shareware licences being "non-transferable" is not to stop people selling them along but to stop people *just* selling licences and still keeping/using them. To do this requires the kind of restriction often seen but if the licensers are asked they will probably say there is no objection >>

I don't think it's for us to start thinking about the intentions of the software supplier and to act according the ideas we may come up with. The license agreement is part of the contract between supplier and purchaser. Buy an application and both supplier and purchaser are bound by the license agreement. When the license agreement mentions that the license to use the software is non-transferrable than that's that - the software can't be resold to a third party.

Note that we're not only dealing with the use of the software itself but also with a number of obligations the supplier has towards the purchaser. Such things as technical support, the supply of bug fixes and the supply of new releases for free or at a discount, maintaining a support web site, etc. These activities are part and parcel of the contract and need to be financed by the sale of applications. When the application is resold by the original purchaser it can very well mean that the original supplier has to give twice the amount of technical support for the same price. Reason why is, that the reseller, who is now the supplier of the third party, won't take over the obligations as supplier with regards to the software. That burden is shifted to the original supplier i.e. the developer.

Install plBeam 1.3 and it automatically places an icon in Control Panel that allows you to replace Psion's infrared driver by the plBeam driver. You also get a question whether you want to install a utility that's available from the Extras Bar. It's the utility that works well while using the icon in Control Panel results in the Series 7 locking up.
