Subject: Anti spam measures, to all subscribers
Dear Subscriber,
Your EPOC DIGEST Team has taken the discussion about the email addresses in the digest into consideration and we have decided on the following two actions :
1/ We re-issued all old digests for the website without any
email addresses in the text and in future we will send a
separate copy of the digest to the website also without any
email addresses.
2/ It will now be possible to request from the DIGEST Team to
replace your email address in all digests with an alias. In
this case also the other subscribers will not see your email
address and you will not be able to receive direct answers
anymore (but you can mention your email address in the text if you like). If you would like us to register an alias, please
send a message to the digest with in the subject field "ALIAS"
and in the text field the alias of your choice. It could
contain your name, or just a number or nickname [no incorrect
(rude) wording please]. If your address already contains a
name, you must not write a new one, but only your request to
hide the internet address.
You can send us your messages now. Don't forget the "ALIAS" in the subject
With best regards,
Itamar Engelsman and Rolf Vonau

I have currently 325 messages on my 9210 message storage is on D, and have never had a problem opening large mails even with attachments.
The last digest 243 contained 23 messages and opened in 8 seconds.
he also asked <Applications such as the excellent SaveMail solved this problem by clearing out the Email application but no such software exists for the 9210.>
no need I have just created another folder in the mail programme called Epoc. Shift + Ctrl + n and just move all mails digest related in to it with Ctrl + m this removes them from inbox, if you wish to read them again just scroll down to the folder Epoc and there they all are.
So I have inbox, outbox, draft, sent, Then Epoc, after that I have two PC folders one for company mail, one for private mail, these I sync each day, first with home PC then work PC when I get to the Office, plus my own 3 email account folders for different actions I use during the day.

Subject: EPOC MP3 player software
Hi Owen,
All you need to play MP3s on an EPOC device is EPlayM from Alexander
Zavorine's website:
http://www.geocities.com/zavorine/epoc/mp3.htm
There are full details on the page there. It will play any MP3 file, but if
you are 'recording' them yourself, you might want to reduce the quality of the
recording which will reduce the resultant filesize significantly (especially
given the less-than-perfect sound system on the Psions).
Personally, I record and use stuff at 'FM Radio Quality' at 64Kbps; it works
for me, especially as my hearing isn't perfect anyway.
Good luck on your further travels, Owen. Maybe if I'm down in Tenerife over
the winter (possible rather than probable), we may hook up.
Regards,
Steve

Hi.
I know this has been mentioned before, but I wasn't paying attention at the
time...
Could someone please give a quick overview of what software is required to
play
MP3 files on a Psion, where to get it, what format the files should be in
etc.
I'm thinking of using it for a language course. Any resources for audio books
in
MP3 format would be very welcome too.

It seems as if you need at least enough free memory to store both pictures (source and destination) in uncompressed form, using 3 bytes for each pixel.
That makes 1024x768x3 = 2.36 million bytes = 2.25 Megabyte
for your source, 0.09 MByte for the small destination, still fitting into 3 MByte, but 0.88 MByte for the larger destination.

Subject: Contacts sync problem
Hi
Since my last posting I'm still unable to sync past 186 entries. With outlook XP and my ericsson MC218. I have tried repeated syncings but each time it whizzes through the process much faster than it would take to transfer the data from the psion - obviously it has cached the data on the PC somewhere and thinks nothing has changed. Since last emailing it somehow corrupted my outlook.pst file and checkdisk erased the entire thing, so I have lost last months emails.
On resyncing I can now only get 70 entries to transfer. They are spread throughout the contacts list from a - z with no real reason why some entries synch and others don't? I'm lost, is there any other way of getting my info over? Please help.

Thanks for your help on this, Simon! I have run a series of tests, with the Netbook having 10M free on C and no apps other than nConvert running:
1) I downloaded your 1024x768, 434k original pic. No problem in resizing this to 800x600, 640x480 or smaller.
2) I then took a pic from my camera, 2048x1536, 746k. Tried resizing it to 200x150. No problem, got an 11k file. Then I gradually resized the original to larger and larger copies:
320x240 - 23k
480x360 - 42k
I then tried resizing to 640x480 and here I hit the "out of memory" error. Same on 800x600 and larger.
You can see the files at:
www.squarci.it/original.htm
www.squarci.it/test1.htm
www.squarci.it/test2.htm
www.squarci.it/test3.htm
I conclude that the larger the original and the larger the resized copy, the more free memory is required for the resizing process. Here the trend in digital photography towards higher resolutions hits against the memory size limits in our Psions! But no matter! 480x360 is fine for me!
>> My install of nConvert has bugs <<
Same here! Will have to try reinstalling too!

I don't have an EPOC logo, but have tried to transfer the Revo logo from my Revo to my Malaysian netBook. I didn't go through PC, but simply IR-beamed the logo to C:\System\Wallpaper on the netBook. Then in Tools>Preferences>Wallpaper I selected the Revo logo. I now have a netBook with a Revo wallpaper. 8-)
You should be able to do the same with the EPOC logo, but you might have to rename it, as there is already a "Epoc Logo" wallpaper on the Malaysian netBook (but comes out as the One-ed dot com logo instead)

> Daniele, here is a quick experiment for you.
I have a very simple solution to offer, but it requires special equipment, which I was happy enough to buy (at the time):
My Camera: a Casio 3000lx
My Psion, a MC218
Both have Infrared.
218 has a ROM app called postcard. Running this, I can transfer a pic of my selecetion from the camera to the Psion. In this process, it gets reduced from say 250kB (or 1MB) to a say 8kB jpg by the camera before sending. Postcard then binds it automagically into a html coded mail, you may add address and some text, one keypress more and it is in the Out folder. I like it, but don't use it often.
And yes, acoording to my knowledge Postcard is SW locked to the 218 ROM, and does not run on anything else than a 218.
I am pretty sure that other cameras can do that transfer function as well.

I can't remember any indexing for zooming in RealMaps. Maybe that's where I got it wrong. It's a long time since I played around with this now, but I can only remember indexing for Lat/Long and that is all that is needed in PsiNMEA.
With PsiNMEA, you give it the lat/long of two points at opposite corners of each map, and everything, including zooming works fine. It doesn't stitch the maps together as nicely as RealMaps is supposed to do though (if you get it right).
> I need to rotate the scan, but can't get it perfect.
I use charts which are screendumped from navigational software on the PC, so I have no problem getting the indexing spot on with PsiNMEA. When I run PsiNMEA and the PC navigation package at the same time, the cursor is always on the exact same spot on the chart on both computers. I tried scanning charts, but couldn't get good enough accuracy for my needs.
What I do when I index a new chart is keep the chart on screen on the PC. Then I place the cursor on the PC on an easily identified spot like a rock, a lighthouse or a buoy, read the lat/long off the cursor position on screen and index the chart in PsiNMEA accordingly. According to the NMEA specs, a talker (GPS) is supposed to be able to drive at least three listeners (computers, autopilots, GPS repeaters etc.) at the same time.

For best results, try resizing to a size that is either half or a quarter of the original. For instance, if you're e-mailing a photo where the original is 1600*1200 pixels, try resizing it to 800*600 or 400*300. Even when using proper imaging software, this will give a better result than numbers that don't bear any relation to the original resolution as there will be less interpolation to do. If you're using MBMview, this leaves it with the relatively simple task of removing every other pixel or keeping every fourth and deleting the others.
Since my 2 megapixel camera gives me 1600*1200 originals, I have chosen 533*400 for the photos on my web site. This is 1/3 of the original and works out well with Photoshop even though there is some interpolation to do as 1600 / 3 = 533.3333.... ad infinitum. Resizing to 1/3 should work out well enough in MBMview as well. You could try whether removing one row of pixels so the photo is 1599*1200 before you start makes any difference.

Subject: Software Licence Fees (for Rolf B.)
Hi Rolf (inter alia),
I have been told by a software developer, a well-known EPOC developer, that the only obligation of the vendor is to take the money - support is not their responsibility (I think that is legally wrong, and I know it's morally wrong).
But even this person does not ask for more than one fee per program.
As I said, such an attitude is probably indefensible in UK law but the caveat is understandable. I have been given EPOC and SIBO software and been told by the developers that they are glad I have told them of the change in ownership and that they didn't want paying again. Where the developer had disappeared I couldn't anyway (this for SIBO software on the original SSDs).
Actually I have two 5mxs and have volunteered to pay for extra registrations to use relevant software on the spare machine. That was generously declined (and where registrations were tied to machine UIDs extra registrations were given).
This is important as software *is* property and so *is* transferable. Shareware registration fees don't change this - the registrations become the property. I believe the additional registration fee is only required for additional use on an additional machine. This has long been the case with mainstream computer software. Certain software companies (not EPOC or SIBO, I believe) have even tried to prevent people putting their programs on a backup (I jest not) because this means duplicating the program. Some have sued but such cases have always been lost as far as I know.
So if you want to pay again obviously you can, it's your prerogative to use your money as you think fit, but most developers are too honest to accept a second fee for the same software (if they know). If you insist they'll probably give it to charity, as I have done with declined fees.
But it's always best to try to tell the vendor what is happening. Common courtesy demands that.
Sorry,
Phil.

I would guess that it's a dy/dx derivative. It's looks like the time since starting to use the battery, after it's been recharged to the point where it shows full voltage; and the Psion is switched on again.
So you can (with care) use it to see how long a battery will last before a recharge.

I've done this in the past - transferred my Ericsson logo from my MC218 to my series 7 (don't ask me why) If I remember I used MBMView to save the image to sketch then saved to wallpaper, or something. Unfortunately dropped my netbook and wiped hard drive so no longer have MBMView installed (no back-up stupidly - now keep everything on D) but maybe some one with a (registered) copy could make the conversion for you and send you the resulting file.

Hi group,
something curious:
On one of my mailboxes, I got an automatic answer mail from the admin. If I use the web access, all is fine.
Downloading it with my 218 Email app, this app crashes.
Program: MsvServer
EText
Error code: 12
I then restart the mail app, the modem connection is still active, I can close it with Ct+u or proceed as usual, for example opening another Mailbox.
Did anybody have such a "hot" email?
Workarounds?
I reported this to the admin, no answer so far. He probably thinks a 218 is a piece of crap not worth looking at.
Of course, he is wrong. Very ;-) I never had this happen elsewhere, and I received many hundreds of emails on it.
