Subject: Nokia 9210i Calendar
<Just wondering if any nokia 9210i user manage to set their calendar storage to the memory card instead on the phone memory. It's taking up all the space on phone and its getting slower day by day. Any suggestion?>
Just close the Calendar app by doing a system reset (use Taskman or just take out the battery), go into File Manager and cut the file you want to relocate, pasting it back onto the memory card. Whilst we're on the subject of the 9210 Calendar app, does anyone know if it's possible to keep 2 Calendar files open at the same time? You can't just cycle between 2 open files by pressing the Calendar button as you can on the Psion Agenda (if you do this on the 9210, it just cycles between the various views in just the one open file).

Subject: Uninstalling nConvert
<How do you uninstall nConvert? There are so many little parts of it installed which all have their own line in Add/Remove.d I've never been able to figure out which belong to nConvert and which belong to other Neuon applications. It's all rather messy.>
A dog's dinner indeed! I remember installing nConvert a long time ago and being amazed at how many times a dialog box came up - "do you want to install component A", B, C, D....etc etc. I don't know why they couldn't just have one entry in the Add/Remove list instead of about 20. If I ever wanted to un-install it now I wouldn't know which components to remove from the list. What a mess (but a brilliant app though!)

Unfortunately it's not mentioned in the owner's manual (nor for the 5ive and 5mx either), but it does show up in the Mako/Revo help file. At one time I actually looked at the Help file. :-)

You might try Twinkey
http://www.prosoft.force9.co.uk/series5/index.html
You can set up your own hotkeys for those characters - maybe something like a+o will give ε, A+e = Ζ, etc. So it would be easier to remember.

Subject: Clamshell alternatives to dear old Psion 5
Hi All
Its a long, long time since I contributed (or read :-O) this digest. The reason is that my Psion 5 was passed onto my girlfriend last year when I bought a Jornada 720 off eBay (GBP 360.00 inc case, spare stylus, 2GB PC Card HDD, Ethernet card, 128MB CF - a great deal as the Jornada alone is still selling for GBP600 or more in the shops) Ian Dean asked for recommended alternatives to the old 5 series, well this is mine. Plus points...
Its colour (640 x 240 half VGA)
Has stereo headphone jack (sounds good playing MP3's on built-in Media Player)
206MHz processor (nippier than the S5)
CF slot AND PC Card slot - I can use it for presentations with my Colorgraphic VGA-out card - another eBay bargain :-)
72% full size keyboard - even better than S5's
Better Office conversion than S5 (the Jornada itself converts files - no need for a PC)
Excellent Word Processor available from www.softmaker.de - all singing all dancing and can open & save in MS Word format.
Built in 56k modem
Decent rechargeable battery (6 hrs + continuous MP3 playing)
Can play mpeg movies/TV programs recorded with PC Tuner card using 3rd party "Pocket TV" software
Many applications available (and PocketQuake runs at a decent speed unlike on Psion :-))
There are altenatives to PhoneMan (e.g. mPhone)
Cons:
A little heavier and larger than S5 but smaller and lighter than S7.
Price (if you buy it new)
Apps are a little to a lot more expensive compared to Psion 5 and less free stuff (c. £15-£40)
Lack of interest from M$ in developing its Handheld PC operating system (nothing new since 2000). Though with HP bringing the Jornada 720 out last year and NEC launching the MobilePro 900 (possibly better buy if you have $900 and want a HPC almost as big as a laptop).
http://www.necsolutions-am.com/mobilesolutions/products/MobilePro/900/specs. htm), maybe M$ will twig that there is still interest out there in clamshell designs.
No connectivity with Apple Mac OS X (but then neither have Psions)
If you have a lot to splurge consider a Fujitsu Life book 1000 or 2000 series about the same size class as a S7 but runs Windows XP and has a touch sensitive screen and 2000 series has a built in CD-ROM drive (about $1000 though - try eBay?).
I was a devoted S5 user (for work and life generally)but after a great deal of looking around beforehand I have not regretted switching to the J720. Saying that, after years of PC use we've just bought a Apple PowerBook - maybe I am fickle after all :-/
Hope this helped

>> I have a new question for you all. Who uses his EPOC machine exclusively as their man computer without other computer equipment besides it ? And what do you use it for and which programs ? <<
I am not using my David Lowe netbook (my 2nd one, he replaced the first one due to the screen and case-switch problems) exclusively, but I have just started to use it to update my homepage. I tried using nFTP, which comes as part of the OS, to access my ISP's webserver, but was unable to see the list of files, despite being logged on correctly according to the log. I downloaded and tried RMRftp, and was able to both see the files as well as up- and download files. Does anyone have experience of using nFTP in this way, and if so, why does it not work the same way as RMRftp in my case?
Cheers, Ian.

PS. I've asked before, but didn't get a reply. Does anyone know where I could buy just a cable like the one that comes with the POD docking station? Owen,
a long time ago I ordered one such a custom made cable from Chris Archer. It works until today with almost workdaily use. But I do not know if he still makes them. I bought it via www.psionleads.freeserve.co.uk
Eventually you can make your own; he is still selling an unterminated cable. But check first if this includes the Vcc pin, I think it was pin 1 on the Honda plug.
All the best.

Thanks for response. I thought that 5MX would suffer same problems as Psion 5 - do you find that they hold together better?

<<<Re. Psion 5... - The replacement of a S5 is ... an S5(MX) <BG>. But seriously, if you don't carry it with you in a pocket or on your belt daily and can either fit it in a briefcase or hold it in your hand, try the S7 (second hand) or the netBook. With the colour screen and better speed and expandable memory and CF cards it is a true alternative. There are today several full fledged PC's the size of an A3 paper, amazing machines really, but expensive and also not pocketable. Next best, one of the other Palmtops with a foldable keyboard ? I am not sure.

My One2One (as it then was) p-a-y-g SIM was data, but not fax, enabled by default and my Virgin SIM was both data and fax enabled by default. My original One2One SIM is now in a Siemens S35i and still works fine under T-Mobile for Data.
As far as I know Orange p-a-y-g doesn't allow data/fax calls and I don't get data calls included in my Orange free minutes. Can't give you any details for O2 or Vodafone as I've never used either.

Subject: MNetBooks again
Morning All,
Now that even more Malaysian NBs are available, I am thinking very seriously about purchasing one. Prior to this I need a few simple questions answered by your good selves.
1. Is it possible to directly synch/update info such as contacts and agenda from a 5mx to the NB, without passing through a desktop? I use a RiscOS desktop so cannot use PsiWin.
2. If synching is problematic, can each machine read from the other's CF card? (I think I'm right in assuming that the NB needs its CF card permanently loaded for OS reasons...?!).
3. Are there any serious problems with the Malaysian models?
4. Does anyone use their NBs for CAD work? How do you find it?
5. What software is bundled with the MNB?
Many thanks.
regards
Peter

I am still missing the Spanish dictionary, if anyone can point me the right way, I'd be grateful.

Subject: Usage of EPOC machine/Switching off
Hi folks,
Usage of EPOC machine.
A friend gave me an old Mac but before that I only used my 5mx. Now I use the Mac for cruising the web and (slowly) preparing my website (but it will be tested on the 5mx).
But I still use the 5mx for just about everything else; eMail, Diary, Reading, Newbury, Shopping Lists, Alarm Clock, Writing, Programming, Calculating, Accounts and even Games. And sometimes for cruising the web too!
But there is no SETI screensaver for the Psion so that only runs on the Mac (it's the SETI part that matters, not the screensaver - not much needs a screensaver these days).
Switching off.
I've just written my first ER5 macro so I'm rather pleased! Here it is:-
REM Phil's first macro : )
PROC Macro:
OFF
ENDP
It's not as silly as it seems - and I *only* use it with Pascal Nicolas' CronTab - and it works for me. I seriously doubt it's originality!
I live alone in a small flat and am a bit disabled. All it does is turn the Psion off (at 22.30 for me - I use centigrade time) so that there is nothing to distract me at night. Since part of my disability is an unreliable memory my Psion helps a lot and this simple (and perhaps silly) macro means my Psion turns itself off when it's on transformer power. I don't need to remember to.
The only reason for this post is that I haven't yet found another utility as simple to do this. But the OPL "OFF" command should only ever be used with caution and never in a loop - misuse can mean that the Psion will have to be reset. This is made clear in the manuals. The "OFF" command in a loop can (all too easily) mean that the Psion will switch itself off as soon as it is switched on, before the program/macro can be stopped. A simple macro/program like the above is OK but please be careful.
As it stands this macro/program is pointless - it's only value is with CronTab. I do know of the many utilities that will do this but I have CronTab running for other things and this macro/program translated is 89 bytes - small.
I tried using Sergio's "NightClock" but it apparently led to the Psion thinking it was connected to the I'Net when it wasn't. I don't know why but I don't need such a complex program anyway. I do know that Sergio has written some very fine macros and programs (I use SaveMail daily) and I rather suspect the problem was with my setup.
I have told Sergio though.
Happy days,
Phil.

Also, could someone tell me how I can get the netBook wallpaper image back onto my system? For some reason this image has become corrupted when I choose it to run as a logo (screensaver image) within Clock 5. When I choose EPOC, all I get is as a elongated bar with grey colour graduated boxes within it, and when I choose Psion I get what looks like a small pair of binoculars dashing around the screen! Surprise, surprise the only one which seems to work is the Clock 5 logo!
<<<<
<Looks up with guilty start from reams of colour icons...>
Ahem. Mea Culpa. No, there's nothing wrong with the netBook wallpaper image on your machine. It's a bug in Clock5 which only shows on netBooks and - until I got one myself earlier this year - I was never able to track it down.
I fixed it on the code on my machine but just haven't gotten around to publishing Clock5 v1.88 (i.e. this bug fix). Perhaps I should! ;-) I'll send you the code patch off-digest anyway - sorry for the hassle.

<< T-Mobile includes 200 minutes any time, but this doesn't include data calls. I think that my TMobile payg data calls are being charged at 30p per min, eek! >>
I don't think you get charged differently for a data call, it's more a question of the number that you're calling, i.e. your ISPs access number.
Most ISPs have access numbers that begin with 08 (e.g. 0870...). T-Mobile (& probably others) do not include these numbers in their 'free minutes' allowance, so you're charged at the going rate for each & every call.
However, Virgin.net have an STD access number (01483-881766) which *IS* included in T-Mobile's 'free minutes' allowance. You can sign up online by going to http://autoreg.virgin.net/online/register & clicking the PAYG button to signup for their Pay As You Go package. At the end you can print out a sheet with all the config information you need to to configure your dialup/email/browser settings appropriately (Substitute the STD access number above). This will also avoid having your Internet Explorer messed up (sorry, I mean 'branded') by them.
<< Orange doesn't seem to include data on payg, although I am sure that someone proved this wrong in the past. >>
I think (but could be wrong) ordinary GSM data calls (as opposed to HSCSD) are supported on PAYG by all operators. Note however, that Orange have recently discontinued their ISP service (but not their email service with the very useful *free* SMS email alerts) so you'll have to use a different ISP, such as Virgin.net mentioned above.
<< I am loathe to have a BT line due to the lack of competition in the local loop. >>
I don't know about Shetland but generally speaking, a BT landline will always be cheaper than a mobile, with or without competition at the local loop.
Hope this helps

I use claranet which has a 020 number which is included in my free minutes (anyone know of other free ISP who offer a non 08XXXX number - I doubt it as I think that is where all there revenue comes from).
