Hi,
since 2 of May we are receiving return mails from your provider.
As those returned mails repeat the whole digest and you aren't the onliest one, we have to download a big amount of such unnecessary mails (today abt 300 kB).
Therefore we temporarily unsubscribed your address for 2 weeks.

Incidentally I always use BMCONV.EXE to convert pictures. I know this requires a PC, but I get the best results. First, use paint to convert to 16 colour bitmap (.bmp), then BMCONV.EXE to convert to 16 grey scale .mbm for my 5mx.
Is using nConvert or MBMView a better option?
<<<<
I've never found a situation where nConvert was a better option than MBMView. MBMView is often more convenient than BMCONV.EXE but the latter always gives better results. I'd recommend looking at Kevin Millican's tips on easy integration with Windows (http://www.millican.info/Home/EPOCpic.htm). It describes techniques for use with Win'95 but these are easily adapted for Win 2000/XP.

Re. Tube - Thanks for the info. Believe it or not, but some of us (like me <G>) do not frequent the netgroups.
<<<<
Can't blame you for not frequenting the newsgroups these days Itamar - they're a mess and spam trolls are everywhere. However, I can heartily recommend the PDAStreet / PsionPlace forums. Before I took a proper look, I assumed they were a commercial site with a niche forum. In fact they've become akin to what the CompuServe forums were originally like (I know you remember those! ;-o ). They're moderated by intelligent, highly knowledgable Psion users, email addreses are kept secret (free subscription with no spam attached) and are a worthy companion to the EPOC Digest. See http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/ for details.
Thinking about it, I should post a cross-recomendation for the Digest at PDAStreet. Will do that now...

Subject: 3 issues
Dear all,
Requesting assistance with the following 3 issues:
(1) 5mxPro - data find: I recently upgraded from and MC218 to an English 5mxPro. Problem is that using the Find feature in legacy Data and Jotter files (built up over several years and successfully used through several upgrades from Series 5 through 5mx through MC218) causes a Kernel Error crash. In some cases, the problem is resolved if i import the old Jotter/Data file into a new one, but in most cases this makes no difference and the new file continues to crash on a search. Anyone experience similar problems? Any ideas on possible solutions to explore?
(2) Epoc Emulator: I recently downloaded and installed the Epoc Emulator. Installation was successful as per the instructions and other previous advice on the digest. Problem is that 3rd party software (eg. Navigator, MBMview, shareware programs to test) install successfully but don't run - typically giving a "Not found" error. Am aware that some of the OPXs are different for the on machine OS and the emulator OS but don't know where to source the correct files, or even if this is the main problem. All suggestions welcome.
(3) Photo5: If anyone has a copy of Photo5 prior to version 3 (the Palmscape release) - could they please email it to me of digest? My current copy appears to be corrupt and will not register successfully (obtained code directly from the author).
Thanks and regards,

Bluetooth is part of the system in MacOs X.
With one of the these cards, would Mac and Psions be able to communicate?

You don't need a PC at the other end. The power isn't coming from the PC, it's coming from your Psion power supply which is plugged into the cable at the same end as the PC goes. The cable has the Honda connector that goes into your Psion on one end and a Y with a 9pin female D connector and a female plug that fits the cable from your power supply at the other. The 9 pin plug can be left dangling or you could of course plug something else into it. For instance a GPS if you're afraid of getting lost... :o)

The drivers are a key issue, and ER5 is unlikely to ever get the necessary drivers.
Any psiLinux experts know if psiLinux would support it? psiLinux.org implies that the 5mx can use CF Ethernet Cards, but Ethernet and Bluetooth are very different beasts.

How do you store the answering machine messages? As a voice file, text?

There is/was a program called SyncTalk by SoDeog Software that could transfer agenda and contact info between Palm and Psion via IRDA. I don't know if it still exists or meets your needs, but you might Google on "SyncTalk" to find it.

Re.: Phoneman & 6310i - Yes, it works without a problem at all. I use it irregularly for writing of SMS and for backing up my phonebook on the internal phone memory. Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Re: XJMAIL - It can be downloaded at http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/densha_e.html (as per digest no. 128).

Re. Reminiscing - I think you are probably right with the combination of S7/nB and a REVO. However, for the few times I would really need the REVO pocketabillity I can't be bothered with the constant synchronisation I would have to do to work with both machines. And than with using the 5MX as aRoute- and Streetplanner with GPS in the car I would be taking 3 machines with me ....
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re. Usage of EPOC machine - Don't you find the S7 very slow for surfing the web ? I tried it a few times but can't get used to waiting that long for pages to complete.
Re. BT v Orange - You forget that for a relatively small extra charge you can get free national evening and week-end calls with BT which will surely work out considerably cheaper than your mobile phone.

Subject: faxing on the netBook
I've been testing fax sending on my MnetBook and am getting strange results. If I compose a fax directly in the Email program, the fax received appears all compressed, with tiny letters. This happens using both the built-in templates and a custom template I had made. Previews before sending seem OK.
If instead, I compose a fax in Word, print to Fax and send it later from the Email app, the fax is received as expected.
Is there some setting that needs adjusting?

<So, if anyone knows of an application that will convert my old Program, Word, Sheet and Jotter files to the corresponding 9210 format and an application that can import or view Data files on a 9210, I'd be extremely grateful.>
I'm really pleased to see more discussion on 9210 matters at last :-) Anyway, first of all the easy bit. Get yourself the shareware PowerData from Epocware - it's as good in my experience as Data on your ER5 machine and much more flexible than the built-in Contacts app. You can export your ER5 Data data (what?) to a CSV file then import that into ER6 PowerData using its "import file" option. As for Word and Sheet files, I use nConvert on my S7 to convert them to MS Word 97 and MS Excel file types which the 9210 can then read. I'm not sure about Program or Jotter though as I don't really need these files on my 9210. Hope this helps.

To all :
Which is your most favourite app, the one you would "never" delete?
For me it's Assistant
Others apps may do similar tasks (Huub' exab; Merlin....) but I've been used to Assistant and its macros hotkeys for so long....
my old brain could not learn anymore shortcuts.

Subject: Photography on Pcs - OT
Sorry for an OT post, however, the only thing many can't do on a Psion is view/edit photographs and some here are active and/or experts on this subject.
Please reply off list.
I have been given some scanned historical photo image files. They are much too large (17Mb) and should have been scanned at a smaller size as the resolution of the originals is low.
Can PC editing programs produce a smaller file that would be as good as rescanning at a smaller size? Or would it be better to request that they be rescanned, which would introduce a few problems?
I have a few Windows editing programs available.

Subject: Using VCal to transfer Agenda info to Palm
A number of Psioneers have wondered whether there is an easier route for transferring Agenda information to Palm handhelds. I can confirm that Malcolm Bryant's VCal software available at Freepoc (www.freepoc.org) does the job beautifully if you first use it to create a VCal file (follow Malcolm's very clear
instructions), then simply use the file import function or drag and drop the file on to the Palm Desktop (resides on your PC). Then use the usual Palm Synch method and your Desktop information is transferred to the Palm unit. Version 4.1 of the Palm Desktop is available free on the Palm website. This isn't synchronization; but as a one way process it is really reliable and easy. I was ready to buy a Palm because an office practice management program that I was interested in allowed import of logged daily meetings into its data from the Palm -- a timesaver. Then I realized that the program in question actually picked up data from the Palm Desktop. It thinks that I'm Palming, I know better.

Martin,
I hesitated recommending vCal because I can't get it to work on my 5mx. It errors out with an ETEXT error code and Reason Number 16. It creates a 60 byte vcal.vcs file that contains no data. This is with version 1.06. Any idea of what may be causing this? I can't get AgnDump to work either, which always work flawlessly on my 3c. Maybe I just have bad body magnetics<g>.
I did forget that the latest Palm desktop does have a VCS file import capability so, if I can get vCal to work then that's a viable option. Unfortunately, you still lose all your repeat information.
Regards, Jim
