I quite like your program although I found the same problem as Rolf, living in Golders Green on the Northern Line that splits up in 2 at Euston Station. If you would find a solution to this problem, it would certainly have my interest. Don't conclude anything by a lack of reports, the majority of users will download a program, use it and never contact the writer.

Subject: Malaybook OPL Toolbar Battery Indicator Fix
Hello to fellow "Malaybook" users!
Shortly after I got my "Malaybook", I noticed the battery indicator on the toolbar of all the OPL just looked wrong. The fix requires a replacement Toolbar.opo, but as almost all OPL apps explicitly use the OPO on the Z: drive (ROM), all those apps need patching. I initially used Neuons HexEditor, but that quickly became a drag, so I wrote a small app to do it automatically. Full details on the webpage:

sometime next month I believe. As I understand it the C750 is a C700 with
the PXA255 chip (which is the fixed version of the PXA250 that Sharp used
in the C700). The C760 is the same but with double the memory (128mb RAM).
I predicted this would happen 5 months ago, which was why I advised against
getting a C700 at the time.
I hope I can get one of these to test out soon because it should be smoking fast.

Dear Andrew,
<< Route Planner however, when I switch on, the position indicator is always about 100m off my true known position & there appears to be no means of adjusting/calibrating this, as there is with Streetplanner >>
There is a calibration function : Menu -> Map -> Set preferences -> GPS -> Calibrate button.
However, what you should keep in mind is that Route Planner maps aren't as accurate, position wise, as Street Planner maps for space saving reasons. When the maps would store each and every twist and turn they would become much too big to for comfort. The Route Planner map for the UK, for example, would have to be split into segments similar to the segmentation of Street Planner's maps. This is the reason why roads in Route Planner are simplified and represented by a number of straight lines. Result is that the position indicator, which shows your true location, can be off the road you're travelling on.

I showed him the stock quote in the FT and he told me it was a different company. Any Psion execs reading this? Is Dixons no longer sellling the Psion line or is there some truth to the kids statement? >>
The problem with Dixons' sales staff is that:
a) Dixons don't train them very well,
b) Staff tend not to have sufficient interest in their jobs to get to know what's happening in the market by self-study,
c) They don't stay on the job long enough,
and,
d) They're of an age in which they're afraid to say "I don't know", feel that they have to give you an answer and come up with something like "They went bankrupt".
Situation is that Psion has moved out of the consumer market, meaning that it no longer supplies handheld computers, modems, network cards and USB equipment. Psion is currently active in:
1) Handheld computers for the industrial and vertical application markets,
2) Software development for wireless information devices,
and,
3) Its holding in Symbian Ltd.
As none of these three activities have anything to do with the consumer market it's clear why Dixons no longer has Psion equipment on stock.

I don't think this one needs to be answered off-list as the answer is a very short one : Yes. When the originals were taken from a newspaper or magazine the individual ink dots will be visible when scanned at a high resolution. The solution is to use a de-screening filter followed by resampling the file to a lower resolution. Some experimentation will be required to get optimum results.

Dear Arjen,
<< ... as I had bought extended warranty, I expected it to be repaired. But Ericsson doesn't repair MC218's anymore and the retailer simply gave me my money back (which I think is good service btw) >>
Which is normal service. The retailer has an extended warranty agreement with you but can't honour the agreement because it doesn't know where to get your MC218 repaired. When that's the situation the retailer has no other options than to propose a refund or to give you a discount on the purchase price of a new PDA.
<< One very big minor point is that afaik Symbian did not spend any time on creating software to upgrade from R5 to R6 >>
I'm afraid this is based on a common misconception about the position of Symbian Ltd. What Symbian does is to supply software components to its partners and licensees. However, Symbian doesn't dictate the way Microsoft dictates what its PocketPC licensees can and can't do regarding hardware and software specifications. Symbian's partners and licensees have the freedom to decide on the type of devices they develop and which of the Symbian supplied software components they use for them. This means that each Symbian partner or licensee will make its own mind up about the support of 'foreign' file types.
It's therefore not a given that one Symbian partner (Nokia) will support (all of) the file types used by another Symbian partner (Psion) because this depends on user and market demands. I'm afraid that it's much more important for Nokia to support (say) Microsoft Word files than to support EPOC Release 5 Word files. Specially when you consider that EPOC Release 5 file support will only be used once in most cases. That is, when somebody switches from a Revo, Series 5mx or MC218 to a Nokia 9210 and wants to get his/her existing files on the 9210. To which I'd like to add that there are more PalmOS based PDAs 'out there' than there are EPOC Release 5 based devices. The demand for PalmOS support could thus be much higher.
Note that you already have the tools to convert most of your EPOC Release 5 files. You have EPOC Connect as supplied with the MC218 and the PC Suite that's supplied with the Nokia 9210. Nokia's PC Suite allows you to get a number of file types on the 9210 you're able to create using EPOC Connect's synchronisation and file conversion options.

Hi Itamar, this frequently happens to me using my Psion, and I simply open Opera and go to www.mail2web.com and delete the offending email (which more often than not doesn't have a header, which is why the Email app will not open it in my experience)...and, on the move, via GPRS, this is not a costly exercise. Hi folks...
To Itamar:
Subject: Usage of EPOC machine
<I have a new question for you all. Who uses his EPOC machine exclusively as their man computer without other computer equipment besides it ? And what do you use it for and which programs ?>
Well, Itamar, while I cannot say *exclusively*, I can say that I am an almost 99% EPOC user. I use PC for backup of my machines and, like you, for photography, plus a little music (eg converting some of my CD tracks into MP3 files to play when out and about), but for power usage, EPOC always.
My S7 or 5mx is constantly open on my desk, where it's attached to a Pegasus 56k modem. ALL my work emails are received and sent this way, and when online I frequently do internet banking via Opera, or check some favourite sites. On the move I generally use a Revo via GPRS for email, using copy - rather than move - to inbox, so that I can save later to S7... Also, all my financial matters are recorded simply and perfectly via Palmtop Money, which I have to regard probably even higher than Email as the finest Psion app. (I used the excellent RMRBank for a while prior to Money, but frankly there is no comparison IMHO... I now use the former simply for its Fuel module). After that, TomeRaider is used a lot: my wife and I like crosswords, and I have - inter alia - the OED and a large Encyclopaedia (Hutchinson's I think) in E Drive (not that I have to refer to them, she does <BG>). After that, I save everything important to me, eg passwords and registration codes etc., to SafePlace (which I keep on C but back up to D via BackUp), and last but not least RMRZip is the program to have for those who like to download... Oh, and yes, I drive in France most summers, for which Route Planner is almost indispensible (using 5mx for portability and readibility). ...So there you nearly have it, save for a mention of WordBox, a freeware word game which is quite competitive and great fun...

Marcus, thank you for coming up with a way to authenticate the standard Psion email program. I am finding things I like about XJMail, but I think it is too much for my wife to grapple with amidst all the other technology issues (I wonder if there is not some kind of genetic trait that places one somewhere along the continuum of technology adeptness. Some of my best friends, wife included, have the darnedest time with computers and their ilk!)
>I returned my David Lowe netbook because it had a "ripply" point in the middle of the screen; the replacement has this is as well, but to a much lesser degree. Whether this is systematic problem.... <
My Malay netBooks all have ripply points in their screens (reminds me of some kind Star Trek effect). However, these only occur when I press on the back of the screen, e.g., when opening the netBook. I haven't tried poking the back of my Dell laptop (little used because I enjoy my 5mx much more), but I assume it would do the same if I poked hard enough.
By the way, does anyone think they have developed the best way to open a netBook or 7? Maybe it's just me, but it seems so awkward, esp. compared to the 5mx.. . . .

Hi Mike,
I have a 6310i and S7/5mx/Revo, and have no problem using the WAP browser (with all three) via GPRS. Actually, naively, I assumed that everyone was achieving this :-)
Basically, I have my settings from your own good website (for which thanks!), and just use the same settings as I would for email or internet. On my phone I have my Psion setting; in the relevant Profile in the WAP browser I use Internet Service: GPRS, Modem GPRS, same as usual when going online. I generally use gateway address 193.113.200.195. I've just tried now, and have had no problem. My server is o2 (Ireland)...maybe ahead of its time? :-) If I can elaborate more, please feel free to ask...

I'm not sure why everyone is suggesting alternative means of redefining my keyboard after I said I use Alexander Zavorine's _excellent_ Key Mapper. The word "excellent" would sort of imply that I'm happy with it... It's freeware too. (www.zavorine.com)
Key Mapper installs as an integral part of the OS and once you've run the Key Mapper icon on the extras bar and typed Ctrl+Menu to select your redefined keyboard, it stays in effect until the next soft reset even if all applications (including Macro5) are closed. The way I've set it on my Mako, it puts æ, ø and å on Fn+j, k and l.
Anyway, I don't use Macro 5. I use Merlin as my macro and file launcher because I prefer the user interface with application- and file-specific toolbars. (And I've paid for Merlin, so I might as well use it... :o) There is scope for improvement in Merlin too of course. The one thing I miss is keyboard shortcuts to the menus on my toolbars, which would make it more like Macro5 in use...
On the S5 type machines, I prefer the MC218 layout to the S5mx one, so when I bought a 5mx to replace my broken MC218, I moved the keys over from the MC218 keyboard and used Key Mapper to redefine it to match the MC218 keys. The only thing I couldn't figure out how to change is that the 5mx has the contrast setting on Fn+m and ? while those keys are used for ";" and ":" on the mx. I ended up putting ";" and ":" on Fn+h and j (which are used for the contrast setting on the MC218.) Does anyone know whether the keyboard definitions are built into the keyboard itself or the OS?

Does anyone know if there exists a flash disk (minimum 2gb) that fits in place of a 2.5" laptop hard-drive? Being able to boot from the flash disk isn't absolutely necessary, but it would be useful. A bit more on topic again. Has anyone been shopping for large capacity CF's lately? Who has the best prices for 512Mb or larger disks at the moment? You probably have your GPS set to the wrong map datum. Assuming the menus on the 12 XL are similar to my Garmin 48, go to the Navigation screen under the setup menu, scroll down to Map Datum and select WGS84 which I believe is the correct one for Street- and Route Planner. I was going to go into an explanation of map datums here, but decided not to bore you. Have a look on the net on sites dealing with GPS navigation. If you use a GPS at sea you need to know about this, as using the wrong datum could put your vessel in serious danger. Owen Thought for the day: Meditation is not what you think. -- Owen H.
