Hi there,

Have you tried using www.mail2web.com to access your mailbox from Opera (I haven't tried it with Web, but it seems to work OK with Opera on Epoc) to clear out unwanted emails?  I've used it to clear huge emails sent by people.

All the best,

Greetings!

Regarding Owen's questions about using a PCMCIA flash disk to boot his laptop...

http://www.cfide.co.uk/compact_flash_ide_adapters.shtml

Here you can find several CF to IDE adapters, including one for laptop/notebooks.

The 'CFIDEMOB' version only costs 19.99 (Assumes UK£)

It has the same mounting holes as a 2.5" HDD, so may not fit some very small/modern notebooks.

If this fits it not only draws less power than a regular HDD, but is also faster...

(It takes both Type I and II cards)

Hello to fellow "Malaybook" users!

Shortly after I got my "Malaybook", I noticed the battery indicator on the toolbar of all the OPL just looked wrong. The fix requires a replacement Toolbar.opo, but as almost all OPL apps explicitly use the OPO on the Z: drive (ROM), all those apps need patching. I initially used Neuons HexEditor, but that quickly became a drag, so I wrote a small app to do it automatically. Full details on the webpage:

<<<<

Hi Andrew,

An excellent app! And the good news is that I can confirm that it works equally well on original netBooks (and I would expect Series 7's too). The bug in the toolbar.opo was originally in the netBook and I suspect just copied over to the S7/mBook/etc.

I especially liked the (only) language option when I installed it - Australian!  Decided that I'd put up with it speaking Aussie to me (seemed remarkably similar to English but I could be wrong!).

Suggestions for improvements? Perhaps the option to chose the app. you want to patch instead of it scanning/patching all? I tested it on a 'test' app (backed up for the purpose) and almost had heart failure when I realised that it was scanning/patching everything I had installed! Actually on 2nd thoughts, this probably isn't necessary as it does its job so quickly. Once a few more people have confirmed that it works on every Li-Ion/rechargable machine (I'd be 90% certain that it will) then there's no real reason to panic I guess...

Thanks for a really useful utility!

Martin

At Martin psience5.net site (might even be colo(u)ris(z)ed ;-)

but no Communicator version I'm afraid.

<<<<

Unfortunately that version was onlt really intended to run on the 5mx. It should run in the top half of the screen on a S7/nB - but it's certainly not optimised for those machines.  To be honest, I never got around to finishing the app. off - it's still a (somewhat buggy) beta release.  And no, there's no colour on it!  ;-)  If people really, really want, I might be persuaded to resurect it for an S7/nB release - but be warned that there's at least one (maybe two, possibly even three <G>) apps in the early stages of development in front of it!

Martin

After many years of serial Psion use, I’ve finally joined the club with my first screen cable crisis. The trusty 5mx has been biked to POS for urgent tlc. Dear fellow list members,

I will be part of the Psion community again, I am eagerly awaiting the

postman to bring me a Series7 in a few days. It's quite a time since my 5mx

"died" and I never was happy with my current solution, Outlook and its

prints.

While I am waiting, I wanted to install the EPOC emulator on my WinXP

machine, but other than I remember, I cannot find it anymore on Symbians

webpages, they link to Psion Teklogix, but the download site there is

"closed for maintainance" since May 14th.

Is there a chance I can get the OPL or Java SDK anywhere on the net? I

searched for two hours now, and abviously everyone linked to Psions website,

because of licence restrictions.

Too bad I didn't download it a few weeks ago...

Cheers,

Chris.

Which problem are you talking about?

The "unnecessary change" when going in only one direction (such as going East through Turnham Green on the District line)?  That doesn't affect TubeRoute's usability AFAICS, but it might be fixable if I though the effort was justifiable.

Or the "curved lines are favoured"?  As I said, that *can* be fixed, and will be at some point.

*All* Compact Flash cards can be used in place of an IDE drive, because CF uses the same basic signals as IDE - you just need a cheap (25 quid) adapter.  The only problem would be if your BIOS has some bug that prevents it using the PIO modes.

You can buy an adapter direct from a UK manufacturer; visit http://www.milesie.co.uk , from who I bought a "MSCF CompactFlash to IDE Converter Board" in the past.  There are tons of companies in the USA making these kinds of adapters.

You can buy 2-3Gb CF cards (really mini hard-disks like the Microdrive), but they cost the price of a whole laptop...  Search on Expansys if you have money to burn!

I am hoping IBM may bring out a Microdrive with capacity larger than 1Gb, as I can't fit everything I want to on it at the moment, and hopefully they would be much cheaper than those mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Subject: uninstall nConvert

This is a bit late but I've been on a particularly hectic tour of Europe with Blur and only just catching up on the digests. Somebody asked about uninstalling nConvert without going through Control Panel - Add/Remove.

Easy way to uninstall any programme is to go to Sysytem - Apps and delete the relevant folders - nConvert + nConvertRecogUi on my netBook.

To remove it from the list of installed apps in Add/Remove go to Sysyem - Install and delete the necessary .SIS stubs

OPX scan (http://www.psionwelt.de/ralphsprenger/RSProgs.htm) will tell you if any OPXs have been left behind, CleanIt (http://www.vorbauer.com/) will help identify any other orphan files, or you could just do a "Find Files" search for anything with a reference to nConvert.

Hope this helps

Could it be just your MnetBook?  I don't see anything wrong with the battery indicator on mine. But then I'm not sure just what you mean by "all the OPL". I have some .opl files in my Macros folder. When I open them, the battery icon still looks OK.

My guess is you're thinking this guy doesn't know a damned thing about the Epoc OS - and you're right!  :-)    I just use it.

When I first got my Malaysian netBook, I had one hell of a time trying to open it, especially when in its dock. I attributed it to my arthritic hands. But I've found that with use it's become easier. My technique is to put my left fingers on the back of the netBook; right thumb on the catch; right fingers on lid; then push catch and lift. "They'll rise with use." a la "Are You Being Served"  :-)

As for netBook screen ripples - ain't got no any.

Rolf,

No, unfortunately, this doesn't seem to the case. I merged my old file into

a new Agenda file and vCal still errors out with the Text 18 message. In

addition, Agenda Dump errors our with a reason code of KERN-EXEC and a

reason number of 3. I've now tried vCal with a new Agenda File with an

appointment, event, anniversary, and a to-do. vCal now generates a correct

file although only with the appointments and to-do's, not the anniversary.

Outlook 2002 correctly imports the appointment but not the to-do.

Agenda Dump, OTOH, continues to error out but this time with a reason number

of zero. It may be that vCal has problem with larger files (mine's 572k) but

Agenda Dump doesn't appear to work at all. I've really like Agenda Dump in

the past because it has more options than vCal. Anyone have an idea what

might be the problem?

From: Philip S. Adkins Potter

Subject: Merlin and Macro5 (Owen's macro launchers)

Howdy Owen,

I use both Macro5 and Merlin.

Macro5 provides system-wide macros, etc., with hotkeys - I would be lost without Sergio's "Scroller" (or it's predecessor, DrB5Read) which I use in many places - ditto SpellOK and Multiclip. But Macro5 can only support 16 hotkeys (I use less) so document/application-specific macros, etc., are on Merlin's toolbars.

In fact nearly everything else is on Merlin, a great application. But Macro5 is only about 1/3 the size of Merlin (and free). I hardly ever use the panels - I can't even remember what's on them! It doesn't interfere with anything else (or hasn't yet) and the application itself is basically forgettable once set up. If you need more panels Mario Collado's Shortcuts macro more than doubles the quota (though I believe it's needed for the Revo/Mako) from 81 slots to 165 (enough for most people added to the 31 on the extras bar, one hundred and ninety-four slots in all!).

Merlin is brilliant too - it's different toolbars for documents as well as applications are something I find very useful. As an example I use Sergio's SaveMail so the default Data toolbar works well with those data files, but I have a film database whose dedicated toolbar links to the TR IMDB document which similarly links back. Also SaveMail is on the eMail toolbar as it only works in eMail, which in turn links to my email data folder.

But I doubt the RAM overhead for Macro5 is much and most of my applications and documents are on the D: drive anyway. On the Macro5 hotkeys I have Multiclip, Autophrase, Scroller, Purple's Navigator, Opera, Huub's SpellOK and S5mboles, iContacts and a few others.

I also use Pascal Nicolas' CronTab and I have used (and registered) Henry Hirst's HotKeys. And there are quite a few other such utilities out there. I don't need or want to remap my keyboard as I rarely need to use "å" or "Å" and when I do - either Ctrl-Shift-c or Mark Esposito's CharMap (magnified characters help me) come to the rescue. If I regularly used them I'm sure KeyMapper would fill the bill nicely. I certainly prefer such utilities to integrate at system level.

I rather think most macro application can happily coexist provided they don't step on each other's toes. But too many macros with hotkeys would confuse me - and I don't need them anyway. Merlin's way of having them on toolbars and *no* system-wide hotkey I find preferable and less confusing. Most of my Macro5 hotkey assignments will work anywhere, most Merlin toolbars are very specific to the application/document concerned.

But my opinions are just that, opinions.

(Have you dried out yet? : • )

Happy days,

Phil.

<You will not have to replace your PIM. The emulator has exactly the same built in programs as the Psions, and it is 100% compatible with all the files you have saved with the EPOC built-in applications: Agenda, Word, Sheet, Data, etc. This is a very great advantage for me because I use the Data application as an extension of the PIM programs, and I have not found a Windows program to replace it. Unfortunately you will not be able to use third party apps on the emulator, but many of them have PC equivalents.>

It's great knowing that should I ever decide to "migrate" to a Windows PC I can have all my familiar programs to hand - but I'll stick with my EPOC machines for now -)

As other PDAs move ever onwards, our Psions still can cut it with the competition.  I think your words "simple and elegant" sum up my S7 a treat!  It does what I ask it to do  without fuss and is just a wonderful machine.
