Hello all,
On the subject of why we cannot make available the emulator and PsiWin 2.3.3 on our own websites when they are free downloads anyway I received a message from Didier Cabuzel, the secretary of the Club PDA. He placed them on his own website and got a reaction from Psion Ltd. Apparently, Psion has to pay licenses to parties (that own copyright on parts of the software) that depend on an (estimation of) the actual downloads. These parties sued Psion (according to Psions mail), because Psion refused to pay for the downloads that were estimated to be scattered around personal websites. While these downloads are free for us, they were a part of Psions investment and probably still are. Psion still has to pay. Psion Ltd. was actively searching personal web sites for these files and it is probably still doing it now (probably Psion Digital or whatsitsname).
I knew the site of Psion Hungary with the free WAP browser and I always thought it was the original, legal download. This seems logical, because:
1. The WAP browser is not for sale anymore.
2. The Revo Plus, the Netbook, the 7 and the MC218 get a free WAP browser, the new 5mx (the last batch) as well and for my original 5mx a free WAP browser was promised. So then finally here it was.
However, given the fact that an emulator version of Phoneman is also available (and this seems to me that it is the exclusive property of Zenobyte) I am starting to have doubts whether we have to do with an official Hungarian Psion agency or not. Can someone read Hungarian and have a look at http://www.psion.hu ?
Yours truly,
Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN

Hi -
There's been talk recently about the useful mail2web.com site, which offers web-based access to many email accounts.
There's also a cut-down PDA version at www.mail2pda.com, which works with the WEB program.

Hi Owen,
(on-list because Psion related.)
I have an elderly Casio QV 3000 ( not sure about the letters) with 3.3 MPixel, and 3x opt Zoom + 2x Digital Z. This camera should be cheaply available (used).
I like it because
- it integrates neatly with my 218 postcard application: transfer resized pics via IR to 218 and mail it
- I wrote a prog to control the camera from the 218 via cables (timed multiple recordings; with zoom options). This works IMHO only with Casio cameras, since they have a RS232 interface for this purpose.)
- good macro ability
- uses CF
- Canon lens
- sharpness and colours ok
- 30 sec videos (no sound, too bad)
On the minus side:
- focusing is difficult/impossible when dark
- long time between shots (relatively)
- flash could be stronger
For the money, I would buy it again.
For more money, there are better cameras today, of course.
Google for Casio 3000 : offers above $100
All this is MHO.

Thanks to all with advice on withdrawal symptoms. Quick turnaround by POS means 5mx is back in my hands, which have now stopped shaking.
But I'm interested in Keith Giles' advice: "If you have a PC you could access them with the Emulator". Could you tell me more?

Subject: OPL & JAVA SDKs
Hi,
I think the OPL SDK is now shown as the netPad SDK on the Psion/Symbian site.
The JAVA SDK was free on the JAVA site but remember to download the right one (1.1 I think). There is a shell program called jShell, also free.
Psion/Symbian (and JAVA) retain the copyright so they can change the condition (within the law, of course) as they see fit *but* not retrospectively - if you downloaded the SDK when it was free and they subsequently decide to sell it they can't charge you.
Caring doesn't actually come into such commercial decisions but control does. OPL may be effectively defunct now but it might resurge so Psion/Symbian retain control for commercial reasons. It's perhaps a bit more complicated but that's the basis.
Most commerce has greed as one motive (don't laugh or be appalled, commerce wouldn't work otherwise) and so some unpalatable things are inevitable and this can be one of them. I don't think Psion/Symbian are charging for the SDKs and I don't think they ever will but retaining the copyright makes good commercial sense - and if they didn't own the copyright they couldn't make their SDKs free!
But since you *don't* have Psion/Symbian's permission to make their SDK freely available you shouldn't.
All that having been said, the arcane rigmarole involved in getting those SDKs from Psion/Symbian site is just too d*mn much for me.
Incidentally, the Patron of The Polite Society prefers to call greed "acquisitiveness".
Happy days,
Phil.

As Astrid mentioned, Psion Hungary *offers* it at :

And (4 Astrid) it fits quite well on a 7/nB screen...
You can even manage it for waping X GPRS

RSET unmarks messages previously marked for deletion in this session so that the QUIT command will not delete them.

Telnet protocol is not, in the first place. intended for emailing (but for ...telneting : port 23).
It remains a quick (and easy;-) mean of deleting rogue msg (via port 110) as was your first query.
To get a copy of your scrolling msgs you can log them but I'm not sure Jtelnet can do this.
Have a look at Richard Panton Hermes v0.51 another well made and free telnet client, It can log and its Help file is quite informative.

Hi folks...
Colin Messer wrote (> ): >Elaborate. Please elaborate.

Hi Colin. There really is not that much to elaborate, but here goes: As I say, I simply used the settings from Mike McConnell's site. Although my phone is a Nokia 6310i, I took the 8310 settings, and they work fine. (In Part "B", ie to configure the Psion, I had to effect two minor "tweaks": username and password "gprs" rather than "web", and I entered the o2 (my server) DNS address rather than get from server.) On the phone, under access point, I entered "internet". After this I was able to go online for email or browsing via Opera or Web and, after a while, it occurred to me to try WAP and (in my naivete, as I said:-)) simply changed the internet service and modem setting to GPRS in the Profile settings: it works fine. It seems to me that o2 here does not differentiate between internet and WAP access when using GPRS, and it has been suggested that some UK servers - such as Orange - do perhaps place some restriction.
If there are o2 UK GPRS subscribers on this list, perhaps they might advise you if they have found Psion WAP achievable under GPRS. If not, I can only suggest moving to this (at present rain-sodden) island :-)

Hi Kevin. I think you more or less answered your own question when you mentioned Money's speed and power. Well, add the full double-entry throughout, really fast zoom levels, comprehensive and printable reporting: net worth, profit & loss etc. And.. split transactions, VAT support, excellent currency support, all at high speed: really everything one could want. I am sure other banking apps (such as RMRBank which I also own) have many of these facilities, but I doubt that any has all, and at such a pace. I agree that colour would be very nice, such as red for overdrawn balances etc.: we'll just have to try to stay in the black :-)

Jack,
Some while ago I started working on 'Invaders' for the Series 7/Netbook. It is only a Beta at the moment (about 80% complete, no sound, no highscore, no help file and some bugs) but is full screen, fast, in colour and works! If there is interest then I will complete the project and release it! Infact, if people are interested I could send an updated beta version to them direct.

Hi again...
To Colin Messer:
Regarding my previous posting on the above topic, I have thought to add that, initially, on the phone I had two access points: one "internet", the other "wap"(with my server's wap address in the latter). However, I realised soon that "internet" opened WAP on the phone just as easily as "wap" did, so I allowed "internet" to stand. However, the "wap" access point does *not* open access to pages via the Psion browser, but "internet" does. (This seems to confirm the point of the author of the article you quoted,
viz. "to browse a WAP site on your Palm use the same connection settings you use for internet or email"?)

Dear Itamar,
Opera is free for the S7, netBook and netpad. You can download it from the Opera homepage. Psion also used to have it, but I don't think they have anymore. If you register at Psion Teklogix you can also get it from there.
I have it on both my S7 and netpad and it works quite well. If you want I can email a copy to you.

Subject: GPRS and Psion wap browser
Had a few hours to spare so made a real concerted effort to get the psion wap browser to work with GPRS (using nokia 6100 and vodafone contract). Frustrating as I failed yet have GPRS and email and web opera working fine with the psion and have psion wap browser working fine with GSM (standard dial in +447836900808) and the wap browser on the phone works perfectly with GPRS. So I started messing with all the settings changing user names and passwords, and IP gateway settings (interestingly in the Internet settings I could have just about anything as long as I had *99# in the dial up number and it would connect to GPRS it would fail if in the psion wap browser the gateway address did not have the 212.183.137.12 settings, I messed with all the home page settings all with no joy). So I looked through all the options in the phone settings on the 6100 and compared the GSM with the GPRS and they are almost identical except for one option which is in GPRS settings which does not exist in GSM which reads: <<<GPRS access point wap.vodafone.co.uk>>>. Now this is not used in the GSM settings on the phone so is GPRS specific, and I can not find an appropriate box in Internet setting or in the psion wap browser setting to enter this. I am guessing here but was the Psion wap browser developed before GPRS and thus does not support it at all (hence why there is no box to enter the GPRS access point)?
Now besides just wanting to be able to do it for the sake of it the main use was for unlocking blocked yahoo mail when it has one of those bothersome mails that crashes it and a cheap way to view and manipulate on line. I can still do this easily using the wap browser on the phone, or at a slower rate using opera, but hey one day maybe I will discover the joys of what wap is for and read the news and horoscopes in short little bytes :-)
Thoughts on this earth shattering observation appreciated :-) Not quite as exciting as the new netbook pro Thread sorry.
