Subject: Series 7 broken screen cable?

Dear list members,

Today I wanted to tell you that I am happy and part of the community again, but fate had other plans:

I picked up the Series7 (that I bought via ebay second-hand from the UK) yesterday, and after I switched it on I saw that the screen shows in its lower third a black horizontal bar approx. half an inch wide. The touch screen functionality works however even in this area.

Does anyone have a clue what is causing this failure? Is it the infamous screen cable problem? Where can I get a solution in Austria (or Germany)? Are the spare cable providers for self-repair?

And finally, what is the Series7's worth now? I payed a lot too much for a broken unit!

Greetings,

Chris.

Hi Owen!

<<

I just bought a new 20 gig disk for my Win 2000 laptop. It's temporarily installed in an external USB drive enclosure and I've partitioned and formatted it (NTFS). What I want to do now is copy my entire WindoZe installation to the new disk, install it in the laptop and have everything up and running just as it is today without the pain of installing WindoZe and all my drivers and software from scratch.

I know I can't simply copy the contents of the old drive across as WindoZe expects certain things to be in specific places on the disk. Nero has an option to make an image of a disk on CD's and restore from DOS, but the restore needs to be run from a Win98 startup disk, so presumably doesn't support NTFS. (The old disk is NTFS too.)

You can try with Norton Ghost: http://www.ghost.com/

Hi,

Sad to see Psioneers hitting each other over the head about this. However perhaps someone could point me at a URL for the software.

Thanks.

Andrew is right. The battery will only be updated when a call is made to the toolbar. If one never uses the toolbar and if there is no provisions in the OPL coding to auto update the toolbar, then the battery gauge will never be updated to any new values. He is also right about the "Good,LOW,VERY LOW,RECHARGE" range of the toolbar indicator.

Subject: Drops Connection

Hi All Only a few more days to go until I leave for Shetland. I have decided to use the netBook as my only computer for the next few weeks, but I am having a problem. When I try to send emails they send OK unless they have an attachment. The attachment is a few k in size, just an RTF. The display shows sending email 1 of 2 and then the call is immediately dropped. ISP is Freeserve. Phone is Nokia 6310i - settings from the Nokia file on MikeMcC's site. Netbook is OS158. Where am I going wrong. No problem collecting the mail at all. Should I be looking at SMPTAuth? Andy Hayes

Itamar Engelsman  <<<As to your question why I don't connect directly via the web, I find it much easier - specially when traveling - to download email to my Psion and read it off line whenever I can, in between meetings>>>  I am confused now as that is what you use the mail app for how do you use mail2pda to read off line as from my brief testing it does not download the messages, they still have to be read online?  I am, come to think of it confused as to why one doesn't just down load the mail using email app, as if you can connect to an isp what is preventing normal use of email app.  (got the feeling I am being thick here and missing the point sorry)

Kind regards

From: Colin Messer <<<I found the last piece of the puzzle for Vodafone at www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html.  Here are the differences between my WAP and WEB settings.  Apologies for the long post.>>>  Wow, you win the prize for me today of psion sleuth, I have now spent a considerable length of time with Voda Tech support and they have been of little use and I am still waiting for them to get back to me, really useful information thanks very much.

so in my excitement I entered details just as you described (it is possible I made an error) and sadly I get:  Program: EtelServer, reason code: user,  reason number 23.  then if I try again I get wap request failed, already exists, then this stays until I do a soft reset.  Now I would not be at all surprised if it is USER error (as in me) but guidance would be appreciated.  I am using the wap browser from the Hungry site though I have the CDs with it on I do not have a pc so installed it from there web site.  in the about section it says: version 1.00f (48) stack 1.00f (16) if its of any help.  Do I need to change any of the settings on the HANDSET nokia 6100 (as was helpful for Kevin) as you do not mention this except <<<The difference between Nokia 6510 GPRS WAP and WEB modem settings is the APN (Access Point Name) >>>  so do I need to change this on the phone to WEB or Internet (I have tried it but still no joy with web and internet) I am not clear or do I leave it as wap.vodafone.co.uk.  Also I copied and pasted your setting in ie at+cgdcont=,"ip","wap.vodafone.co.uk"  was that right to leave it like that?

Thanks again and well done I appreciate it, tech support were pursuing the line with me of needing to use some other initialisation instead of *99#.  interesting about the data settings in Modem as I have had that blank for web and email and it has been working fine and using software flow control and a few other differences with my Nokia 6100 and it has worked fine.

RE <<<what does the session type and bind instruction do?>>>  I think I read this means it ties browsing to the a specific area and will not allow going to other sites while logged in via a specific IP, or something I think it can keep you to a specific area like how browsing with voda is free at present as long as you stay in certain parameters, i will check the help file again I think that is where I saw it.  I wonder what the difference is between connectionless and connected is?

Kind regards

Subject: Spam & Viruses

Hi there,

Like Owen I got the eMail from with movie28.pif attached but I deleted it as it was unsolicited and anyway, my Microsoft software is *very* outdated - nowadays I use an old Mac as well as my 5mx. I didn't realise there was a virus in there and I wouldn't know how to identify it on my Psion - and I use the Psion for all eMail.

But there is a lot of stuff on the web about how to trace spam and all the tricks the spammers use to obfuscate their addresses (the virus was in a spam after all). You do need an eMail program that will give you the full eMail with headers or (on my Psion) a file viewer.

The Psion understandably uses an arcane numerical protocol for naming it's eMail files and puts attachments in a related folder. At (C or D)://System/Mail/ there are several folders for (amongst other things) different accounts, Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Draft, etc., all numerically named. The folder with the offending eMail will also contain a related folder with the viral attachment in it's original name. Open the eMail in a file viewer (I use File Pepper) and the information should all be there but it's *very* cryptic.

Look at <http://eddie.cis.uoguelph.ca/~tburgess/local/spam.html> for an analysis of eMail headers and how to identify the actual address of the spammer.

There are very many anti-spam sites which is a measure of the problem. If you go to <http://www. privacy.net> you'll find all sorts of info. about privacy on the net and links to all sorts of related sites including anti-spam sites (and a few broken links too). It seems a Psion-friendly site and you'll be *amazed* at the information you put out on the web every time you connect if you look at <http://www. privacy.net/analyze> (and you should). Try it using both Opera and Web on the Psion and whatever browsers you have on your desktop.

Take care,

Phil.

Subject: Opera & mail2web / pda and JTellnet and Freeserve

After I installed Opera I tried several times to use it to check my email with mail2web and mail2pda, but neither of them works with my Freeserve account. It just says that either the username or password is incorrect while in fact I am 100% sure I entered it ok. Any ideas or information ?

Also, with JTellnet the problem is that if you have an email that closes your email program you can't be sure which one it is. Today I tried to delete the offending one via JTellnet and ended up deleting almost all my messages (fortunately they still appear in the "trash" folder on the Freeserve website). How can one be sure which one is the offending one ?

Also when I try to connect to my mailbox via the website of Freeserve i don't succeed. Is this because Opera tells me my entries are sent "without encryption" ?  And if so, how do I activate this encryption so it will work ?

Re.: Purpose of SmtpAuth - Thanks for the explanation. What I still don't understand is, once i am connected to an ISP why do I need to send email from a different smtp server ? Why can't I just use the smtp of the server I connected with ?

To All

Re. Navigator from TomTom - I am really "angry". They not only issued a new version of Navigator with 3D pictures of the maps, but also a Bluetooth GPS ! So why am I angry ?  Because they don't develop this for the EPOC platform !!!  BOE  BOE  BOE !!!

S7 in car-update - Ok, I will do my best and write a smallish article and make some photos.

Subject: Usage of EPOC machine

Hi all

I use my s7 as my main computer, the other being my 5mx. I need the 5mx if I want to use it in daylight or to travel light.

I use email to keep in touch, web and opera for surfing/banking/downloading, agenda renamed appointments to keep me in the right place at the right time, also I never forget birthdays, etc, savemail has app button no1 as I archive all mail daily to D drive, I read the tv times over breakfast on saturday and input all I want to see on tv or listen to on the radio over the next week into rmrtv, I have masses of work / study material in various formats; word, data, jotter, sheet, rmrnews is app button no2; I love the various newsgroups, encrypt keeps my stuff secure, citymaps is a must I use it 2-3 times a week as also route, agenda+ is great for viewing a month, today shows my appointments on start up, mbmview is good for all image viewing; maps, plans, pictures, etc, I use sysback to quickly restore settings, meter is an excellent program both useful and fun, I listen to mp3 audio books, I have a folder called library which has various ebooks, I use a sheet created by myself for tracking and automatically calculating my finances, ..... I could go on but I had better stop, basically I have all the software I feel I need for total independant use. At the end of the day it suits me, I love epoc! Sorry if you are bored reading this.

Best wishes

Reply to Itamar Englesman:

The only time I found my S5 screen superior to that of my S7 was actually in a car or outside in natural light.  The S5 was very readable (due to the sharp contrast of a monochrome LCD display in bright lighting conditions) but I found the S7 very difficult to see if it was sunny.  Do you power it from the cigar lighter and turn up the brightness to full to be able to see anything?  I'm curious.

Reply to Steve Litchfield:

Thanks for the revised 3-Lib site.  I'm pleased to see the 9210 content increased considerably and I particularly enjoyed the media section.  I would like to think the 9210 has got a long future ahead of it and sites like this can only increase it popularity.

Reply to Keith Giles:

I suspected these trial versions of Symbianware shareware may have full versions somewhere else but wasn't sure.  It would be much more useful if they simply followed the usual procedure of inviting someone with a time expired demo to simply select "register now" from within the program to save the hassle of re-installing a new copy (and having to obtain it in the first place).

Because certain ISPs are 'upgrading' their systems with new security measures and as it's a new feature generally only available in their 'Launcher' for Windows.  I now can't send e-mails using my orange.net address and I suspect that the new improvements on my ISP, used for this Digest, that are only available for Windows, will mean that I will have to find a new ISP.

Where is SmtpAuth to be found as I will probably need it soon.
