Subject: Siemens S45 Gprs
Dear all,
Please excuse me if this has been covered before.
I need to buy a new mobile phone and narrowed the choice to Siemens S45 or Nokia 6100. A neccessary feature is Gprs as well as decent battery life.
My first choice would be S45 because of price. Does this work well with either Revo or S7? With the salesperson, I tried to connect in the shop with my Revo but without success. We got to the step which prompts for password but after that a message "no connection" came up.
A few months ago, I was using Ericsson T68i with Revo and had no problems. Using this same setting did not work. Any advice from users of S45 is much appreciated.
Best regards,
Dick

Owen,
you need to create a folder named C:\LOGS\Email which then holds the logs. You should clean up the directory after a long download, because the files can become **huge**!

Are you using a series 7 or netbook?
If so you CANNOT enter at+cgdcont=,"ip","wap.vodafone.co.uk" in the data init string, as these machines will only accept 20 characters maximum.
Leave this string blank, and enter the APN directly on the phone. For wap it would be something like wap.vodafone.co.uk, for internet it would be something like internet or web, this is specified by your service provider.

If you want to do development, especially C++, you *must* install everything in the root directory of an (typically empty) drive. You can fake such a drive by using the SUBST command, which
assigns a drive letter to an abitrary directory (create a shortcut in your startup folder to recreate this setting on each reboot).
If you only want to use the emulator, you can simply copy the contents of the installation CD (or
the equivalent ZIP file) to a directory of your choice. You will only need the EPOC32 path and its subdirs.

I assume that your machine is sending data too fast to your phone. Have you set up the handshake options correctly? (XON/XOFF aka software handshake should do).

No that's a totally different problem.

You probably do not want to! My ISP is T-Online (DSL), but my email account is with 1&1 who
host my website. Whenever I use the SMTP server of T-Online, they modify the headers and
replace the "from:" field with the username they gave me. I'm unable to send mail with my preferred from addrusing their SMTP server. 1&1 have their own
SMTP server but due to spamming they recently set up a second server that requires authentication. The other one still works but will eventually be taken off the Net.

Hi,
SmtpAuth is on my web site in the download path:
http://www.mvcsys.de/download
http://www.mvcsys.de/download/smtpauth-sis.zip http://www.mvcsys.de/download/epocutil-sis.zip
You'll need both and *must* have Java installed, since it is a Java application.

Answer to: Christian Roth
Re.: Series 7 broken screen cable? - If you received it in this state, you should make a claim as the guy delivered to you a broken unit without stating it is broken. There is a repair centre in Germany, just look a few digests back for details.
Answer to: Andy Hayes
Re. Drops Connection - Gee, that is strange. I use the S7, also a 6310i with settings of Mike and quite often Freeserve and do not have that problem. However, sometimes messages with attachments just hang, and mostly I have to delete the attachment, open the original, save it again and attach it again to an email before I succeed sending it. In general attachments sent a lot better when zipped is my experience.
Answer to: Mark Deppe
Re. Mail2web - Well, quite easy really. In general I don't need this program and happily use the email program of my S7. However, sometimes when downloading the headers the mailprogram closes itself due to one of the messages that is in the mailbox and the only way to correct this is by entering via the web and deleting the offending message. Normally I can do that at home or in the office, but when I am traveling on the Continent that is a little difficult. So I need it in order to correct the problem if and when it happens.
Answer to: Philip S. Adkins Potter
Re. Spam - Thanks for the info, but sometimes knowing everything doesn't make you happy either <G>. I for myself decided that SPAM is much the same as all the rubbish post I get through my letterbox (even though I always tick off not to receive it on forms) and bin immediately. I look at the headers and first delete all spam and other rubbish before downloading what I want to read (another advantage of the Psion email program, you see the headers first). On my PC, I NEVER open anything I don't know where it is coming from, and certainly NO attachments.

Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re.: Screen visibilty - Yes, you are right, the screen is a slight problem, but I managed by changing the brightness and moving the screen around until I got an acceptable view. The problem with the 5MX is that when using sunglasses it more or less looks black whatever you do. The larger screen of the S7 compensates for the lesser view and you can follow the route easier and use "heads-up" which is useless with the small 5MX screen. Yes, I power it via the cigarette lighter which works very well.

Answer to Owen H. Morgan
> ...Could someone please remind me which folders I need to set up on my

BTW, the virus was the file "movie28.pif" attached to an e-mail from (yeah, right...). The text of the e-mail simply said. "All information is in the attached file." Am I right in assuming there is no way of getting at the header of the e-mail to try to figure out where it _really_ came from once I've received it and deleted it from the POP3 server? <
Dear Owen,
The folders are C:\Logs\Email\
The virus is actually a worm named Palyh and/or Mankx. When activated it'll copy itself into the Windows folder and search for email addresses and then as next forward itself. According to Sophos the worm should be quite harmless.
I received two instances of the bogus mail. The sender of the mail will be either:
Received: from MIKE_OFFICE (ACB26A23.ipt.aol.com [172.178.106.35]) by rawdeal.mobilixnet.dk (8.12.8/8.9.3) with ESMTP id h4LKPYWe090809 or
Received: from MJE-XP ([62.105.140.113]) by tina.andersenit.dk (Merak 5.8.6) with ESMTP id LQA37191
You can identify them by the IP address in the [] which is the spammers own IP address.
When you delete the mails from the POP3 server you cannot retrieve it by yourself again. However, the ISP do keep a copy for a number of years. That's why the police can read the emails of suspected people even if they've deleted it on their computer. Maybe you can ask your ISP to help you.

Subject: SmtpAuth - Java & Editor are needed!
Hi,
I've got a question from Sandeep Singh who is not reachable via his reply address at yahoo.com, so I post the reply here. It's useful for all potential SmtpAuth users:
In order to use SmtpAuth, you must install Java first. This should be available on the Symbian or Psion web site. After you have installed Java, the program can be started and offers a "Settings" button. This allows you to edit the INI file with the neccessary information. For Editing the INI file, Symbians Editor is neccessary. You'll find it on the Symbian web site. The settings are activated
after "Restart" is pressed.
Creating the directory C:\LOGS\Email enables tracing from both the email application and
SmtpAuth. If you have any problems, mail me the resulting files. The contents of the consol can
be written to a text file as well. The location of the file is determined by a system property, "user.home". These properties can be adjusted from a file named "epocutil.properties" located in \System\Java\classes on the drive where EpocUtil (the utility package) is installed.
I'm still waiting for feedback concerning the correct locale settings in various locations. Where is your default documents folder, what is the name of your time zone?

Do *not* install Perl. During the installation process, when it asks if you want to install Perl, click No or uncheck box (I forget
which). See the Psion Emulator page on my web site.
salix wrote, re his S7:
> I use sysback to quickly restore settings,
SysBack was(is) very useful to have on my 5. But I find the combination of ResetPlus and AlarmPlus (see www.mypsion.ru/alarmplus.php - for ResetPlus scroll to the bottom of the page) even better. If you have to do a soft reset, simply double-click on the ResetPlus icon in Control Panel, you get a reset and AlarmPlus returns *all* your settings. Also check out the "startup" tab in AlarmPlus for various things you can do.
There is an AlarmPlus for the 5ive (ER3), but I've never been able to get it to work, so stick with SysBack there.

Subject: Synchronize more than one Psion with Outlook?
I have 5 Psions of various types but I synchronize only one of the machines with MS Outlook. Updated agenda and contact files are synchronized from that "master" machine to the others using infrared file transfers. That system has worked well for several years.
But the machine I use for synchronizing with Outlook is starting to act unreliably (It's a Revo). What I would like to know is whether I can synchronize at least one other of my Psions with Outlook without causing absolute chaos in Outlook and in Agenda.
I would experiment but I fear the possible consequences so I would to know whether anyone can say that it is possible to synchronize more than one Psion with Outlook.

Subject: Dana update & Treo
After playing with the Dana for a few months in order to decide if it will be a workable replacement for the Psion machines once my machines all go belly up (my wife's 5mx just experienced the dreaded screen cable failure and is up for a $175.00 trip back to Psion-USA (or $160 to Canada), I'm ready to
report.
The first observation is that support from AlphaSmart is superb. They have a community Bulletin Board (www.AphaSmart.com) that is quite active, and when you call technical support you receive a knowledgeable helpful human being after relatively short holding times. Support on the BB is of the same quality and friendliness as EPOC digest.
They had a battery software glitch and published an OS update that repaired the glitch. They now have an LCD screen problem that effects a small number of owners, and have both published a recall and sent individual emails as well announcing the recall (machine to be fixed at no cost to the owner).
The AlphaWord spell check is almost worthless and AlphaWord does not allow saving to folders - all files in one humonguos folder. The next OS upgrade (due in two weeks) will have the spell check fixed as well as other upgrades.
I tried IR transfer between the Psion and the Dana using PLBeam. The file transfers fine but shows up on the Dana as "unrecognizable," so am transferring files via PsiWin and HotSynch.
I've been considering a Treo 90 as a pocket companion to the Dana and Staples has a rebate program that drops the price of the Treo 90 to $150 (less than a round trip to Psion for a cable transplant). So I bought one and loaded it up with Wordsmith, Snapper Mail and Backup Buddy.
I am shocked. The thumb-board on the Treo is much better than I had anticipated (no match for the Mako or 5mx, but quite usable).
Wordsmith supports "filing" in the same fashion of the earlier Zaurus's. The agenda and contacts programs are quite civilized, and the Palm Reader is much better than any e-book program I've played with on the Psion. The screen size is good and combined with the color (I never thought I'd turn on for color),it is quite readable. The machine seems to be useless for Sheet applications.
Have not been able to build a sheet to duplicate use on the Psion but it may be me rather than the software.
I see the Treo as a successor to the old Zaurus - I used to love my Z for it's user friendliness and only moved on to the Psion because of the terrible processor on the Z (it could not keep up with my poor typing skills. I've always said that the Zaurus was a very high level organizer while the Psion
was a computer. If the Z had had a decent processor,I would still be there.
I am not a power user of Psion, more of a power "word processor," but for me life after Psion will consist of a Treo 90 supplemented by the Dana. I do my HotSynching with the Treo (which is becoming my main machine) and IR transferring between the Dana and the Treo. The Palm desktop will support
many similar machines as long as the user names are different, but will not support machines with separately set-up software configurations (AlphaWord on the Dana and Wordsmith on the Treo)
I still carry around my Psion for those chores that are beyond the Palm OS, but when it finally dies, Palm OS will be my replacement (don't like WinCe and don't like the cost of the WinCe machines). Thumb Boards are showing up all over the place on Palm OS machines and (IMO) it is only a matter of time
before we see a Palm OS clamshell with a Psion type keyboard. And I bet it will be without cable problems.
By the way, as much as I am impressed with AlphaSmart's technical support, I find Handspring's support so far to be invisible. Feels like their support
for the Treo will be similar to Psion's. Basics only.
Battery systems on both units are excellent. The rechargeable AA pack on the Dana can be replaced with standard AA's in the case of a problem. The Treo will do a full recharge in 90 minutes. Neither unit is subject to overcharge.
The bad point is neither unit has a backup battery but uses part of the reserve to hold memory. When changing out cells (if and when necessary) you have a few minute window in the Dana before losing data. As in all machines,, a good backup regimen is recommended.
Haven't had time to set up SnapperMail yet. More later.
