Yes Martin, I think that's a great idea too.  This Digest is a treasure trove of useful information just dying to break out into an article!  I'm thinking of making a contribution myself shortly.  I'm currently writing a draft article on my experiences of moving from a 5mx to a 9210, so I'll ask Elizabeth if it can be included in a future edition of FoxPop.  I've learnt a lot over the last 12 month's of using the Nokia and hopefully my experiences may help others considering the change.  In the meantime, would any other 9210 owners here on the Digest care to share their experiences of using this ER6 machine?

Yes it is possible, I have an mc218, a netbook, a Nokia 6310i and a Nokia 6210 all synched with outlook. Just delete the contacts.mdb file on the new psion you are going to start using as a second machine, then open contacts to automatically create a new, blank contacts.mdb file, and synch with outlook.

All your present outlook contacts will then be copied to the new psion.

From here on you can synch whichever machine you feel like whenever you feel like. Just find a system that suits you.

Hi all

Happy Birthday digest and may long it continue, I must also add my thanks to those who keep it going. Well Done...

I Have gone mad recently and bought both a Series 7 , 9210i, & Jornada 720  on ebay Bonus time t work.

I have tried the both the 720 & Series 7 both brilliant at home with  Gold card Modem. But out & about had to revert to (Two bottles in the shower) carry two items about.

I got the 9210i as my last purchase.  WOW !! this is what the Communicator is all about, this is what the Website boasts I  Can have Tom Tom City maps Open, Calendar open, Messaging open,  Bounce Open, & still not get the out of memory warning. I can even play my 40 Meg preview of Final Fantasy without any pauses.

The web browser is fantastic. loads frames and Java.

Have signed up to Online banking.

So as a result (shameful as it is to use this space )

I have the following for sale

1- Nokia 9210 unlocked with 32MB MMC  plus all the extras

2- Psion Series 7 with Gold Card Modem 64 MB CF card Carry case Psiwin CD plus all extras

3- HP Jornada 720 built in Modem Windows CE 3.1 Cradle  and usual extras.

Mail me off list if you are interested in anytNow to the reply's

"Replace backup battery"  message in my old Psion days usually meant that the battery contact has come unsoldered from main PCB, a piece of card will work for a while but is not a cure or can it be relied upon in main battery failure.  but take the bottom case off and resolder the contact back on.

With regard to the fantastic FREEWARE tube programme,

we all no Rolf has a vast knowledge and is always willing to help us all, if he can, but  sometimes we all have to let his comments go without getting to upset about them ! I am sure he would be deeply mortified if someone told him face to face how offensive and arrogant occasionally he comes across.

With regard to Kevin Thorns request, Smartanswer, yes please how to register the demo version, this is without doubt apart from my teasmaid ((an automatic tea making machine  that wakes you in the morning with a pot a freshly brewed Tea (English Breakfast) UK only) this is the best killer app for a Communicator. It's an answer phone hat records peoples messages as a wav file, therefore saving you the cost of Mobile message retrieval. Its so versatile that you can have 3 or 4 present answer messages ready and waiting.

Well that's enough from me, best wishes to all  Ashley

Subject: email logs; mail2web

Hi there,

someone was asking how to set up email logs:

set up a folder on c: called Logs

then set up these folders under that: email, etel, fax, mailtext, netdial, and  synchro, then when you use Mail, files will appear in the folders (but not in all of them!).

Headers appear in the email folder, in a file that starts ImLog, has the email port number and ends with .txt e.g. ImLog110.txt

Whoever was having problems with their line dropping when sending might find the mail folder useful, and the etel one, perhaps?  In the ImLog file, when I closed the mailbox it seems to say QUIT, and the modem calls are in the etel folder files.

By the way, I usually use the Psion Travel Modem, so when I was "on the road" and forgot to change the modem to my Nokia 6210 mobile phone I was very surprised to find that Mail was quite happy to treat my phone as the Travel Modem.

I think the problem may be sending attachments - I sent an ordinary email with no problems, but when a .doc attachment was included the line dropped.

******

If I remember correctly, if you're using the "simple" login on the www.mail2web.com page, the username is your full email address e- if you use the "advanced" login you need the POP3/IMAP server name as well e.g. pop.freeserve.com

All the best,

      Kate!!

Andy, you don't say if this is just a problem with this one particular attachment or with others too.  I had this trouble once with just one particular attachment - I just couldn't get the darned thing to go.  I've no idea what was causing the problem but all I did was to delete the offending email (saving the attachment first of course) then re-inserting a new email with the same attachment into the outbox - then it got sent with no problem.  This worked for me but I've no idea why.  The only thing I can think of is that the original email (being a separate file for each email in EPOC) got corrupted in some way on its way to the outbox.

Oh well, that was my 'Guru for a Day'; but it was nice while it lasted.  Consider using TheDialer a program written by John McAleely.  It helps me resolve connection problems.

http://www.mcaleely.com/freeware/TheDialer/

"TheDialer is a simple freeware tool for making a connection to the Internet from your EPOC device"

and of course check the logs.   After that I would have done the same thing, soft reset.  Is it possible that your System\Data\Commsdb.dat is corrupt?  Try renaming it and entering the modem and internet settings again.

GPRS connection: When needed

GPRS access point: internet

If copied into the Data init. string of the modem settings for WAP, then yes.

Thanks for the info on binding.

Do you still get the GPRS session set up?  Without the at+cgdcont I just get a GSM session.

Hello all - after many months of gaining useful info I found I may be able to contribute a little.

New 5mx Screen Cable

New 5mx screen cables are available from Dirke Heinle at 32,50 EUR plus 2 EUR post & packing. Payment is via money transfer to his German bank account. Don't make the mistake I did of using a UK bank to make this transaction. It's just cost me 10 UKpounds for a relay transaction. It's much cheaper to use a credit card company to do the transfer (1.5% commission). Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Orange GPRS UK

On a better note Orange GPRS is down to 2UK pounds per MB or 3UK pounds on 'pay as you use'. They've been overcharging existing customers for months - so make sure you get a rebate (Effectively from Feb 2003). They're also offering free GPRS Wap for 3 months (& looking at their Website free GPRS email for 3 months too).

Subject: Reset+/Alarm+ & SysBack

Hi folks,

Keith, you wrote to salix "SysBack was (is) very useful to have on my 5. But I find the combination of ResetPlus and AlarmPlus (see www.mypsion.ru/alarmplus.php - for ResetPlus scroll to the bottom of the page) even better."

On my other 5mx PsiLoc+ replaces Alarm+, StickyKeys, SysBack and EPOC Task Manager. But PsiLoc+ won't run on this Psion (it's got D & G's RAM upgrade). Until today I didn't realise Alarm+ made SysBack redundant. But even though it does the instructions aren't very clear (not the English ones, anyway).

Set your system as you want it, then open Alarm+, General, and select the button marked "Save current" and the legend "Hardware Settings - Save current 'Keyboard' settings? - Yes/No" should come up. Select "Yes". It works. SysBack is excellent but this is better.

With SysBack I used to use StartUp (the program) before and it's a fine program, especially if you want alternate groups of programs. Since both are free and neither are TSR-type applications (old DOS hands will understand) the memory overhead is just disk space. But Alarm+ is better and just as free.

I'm trying to keep all this to my practical minimum (so thank you, Kevin) but unless I use the Psion sparsely some things are really very useful (Macro5 for one instance, Merlin for another). Another useful utility is NoMore (Neuon, free) and I bought nConvert - both are pretty transparent. For me transparency (and intuitiveness) is *very* important as my memory isn't too reliable - fortunately my Psion is.

Kevin, you also wrote "There is an AlarmPlus for the 5ive (ER3), but I've never been able to get it to work, so stick with SysBack there." Since you're currently unable to get the ER3 version of Alarm+ to work, have you eMailed Robin Hood? (I don't have an ER3 machine myself.) They were very helpful to me when I registered EPOC Task Manager.

Incidentally (salix), what is meter in your earlier "Usage of EPOC machines" post? I assume it's series7/netBook specific, to do with the battery pack. I'll probably get one soon so it'd be nice to know what the better battery utilities are.

Happy days,

Phil.

Subject: Spam & Viruses

Hi Itamar et al.,

I delete nearly all unsolicited eMail while it's still on the server after reading the "Subject" line and the address it's from. But the point isn't me - and spam is a real problem for some.

There have been many spam scams and now spam apparently exceeds legitimate eMail (it certainly does in my case). Since the vast majority of people aren't spammerst this means that a tiny minority, eMail-savvy, are responsible for most of the enormous and growing amount of spam. And some people get ripped off.

Understanding how this works and how to frustrate it is vital for the I'Net as a whole, though not for any particular individual, since the spammers don't actually care now and won't until/unless the whole I'Net gets log-jammed by the sheer volume of spam - and even then they'll only care about getting their spam through (and the volume of eMail spam may be growing at an exponential rate).

The reason it's more pernicious than physical mail is simple - mail costs money, eMail doesn't on anything like the same scale. spam (even littler letters here please) costs the same however many spams are sent, 10 or 10,000 or 10,000,000. This means that spammers can send out *millions* of eMails at no extra cost (an unlimited I'Net connection costs me 15 GBP a month - and a spammer needs much less than I use).

I may be a rational anarchist (don't ask) but they are true anarchists - they believe we have no rights, they have total rights. They even think we shouldn't be able to screen out their spam. We should *read* it all!

And they do try to stop us screening it out - most Mac/PC eMail programs (not webmail) will not just download headers first, they download the whole schmeer, ads, active links and all. Why? I think that we are fairly normal folk but most eMail apps that don't download the whole mail regardless are not part of the mainstream software for Mac/Windoze. So obviously normal folk don't want to delete spam *before* they read it and we are abnormal, along with our treasured eMail programs.

On the other hand certain government agencies (and not just US ones) want to be able to breach anyone's privacy, remember the row about the Clipper chip? Either way my personal privacy is under threat from at least two (opposite) sides.

Incidentally, ticking "Opt out" (or similar) on some web forms/eMails merely confirms your eAddress - I suspect the same applies to some physical mail. Unless I have a good reason to do otherwise I just throw such stuff away and finally my address/eAddress is deleted.

If I receive an eAttachment I want I do download it to my 5mx (EPOC is at least virus-resistant, maybe virus-proof) and check it there. Macs are nearly as virus-resistant (guess who's got a Mac) but Windoze, forget it. Having nearly a world monopoly on OSs means having nearly a world monopoly on OS grief. Windoze users really need virus protection.

Micro$oft owners, eat your hearts out!

Good luck,

Phil.

Subject: Collins Italian dictionary/PsiWin emulation on the Mac

The dowloaded Collins dictionary was in .exe format and therefore not of much use to me and my Macintosh.

I contacted Handango Support via email and was told that I was entitled to a refund.

I contacted Handango via their site and a Mac installer was posted for me.

In fact I have Windows emulation on my Mac. The reason I couldn't open the .exe file was, I realised, because I was clicking on the file that was on my MacOsX disk. And there was no permission for Windows

emulation to open the file.

Likewise PsiWin was refusing to convert files that were on the OsX disk. To open them, I had to put them on the root of the emulated PC.

Finally, although I am running VPC 6 on Jaguar, and although I have the most recent Keyspan drivers, I can't get emulated Windows 98 to communicate with my Revo. I have carefully read the .pdf file on the Keyspan site, done everything but no luck.

And suggestions from other VPC users.

Thanks.

On the face of it, this sounds reasonable.  However I lost the ability (on a Psion) to use my orange.net e-mail a/c for sending, only being able to receive.  The ISP I'm using now is also 'upgrading', which I take to mean is much the same, so shortly I'll loose the ability to send.

Orange sent me a booklet about the changes.  All that was necessary was to click on the 'My Server Requires Authentication' box.

Computer Weekly has provided a downloadable .EXE that installs an additional loader.  All this does is to introduce (on W98) a number of error messages that only delays the connection.

The point I'm making is that no new information is required for my authentication.  So if I can connect (on Windows) then what's to stop spammers?

I get the impression that it's only a front and that spamming will continue unchecked.  It's a bit like the numerous organisations that inform us that their service has improved (like improved monthly statements that now require twice as much paper and are more difficult to read and understand), when in fact it's worse than before.

Aha, good - more 9210 content on the Digest!  You sound very happy with your 9210i, Ashley.  I noticed from the equipment you are selling that you've probably upgraded from the "plain vanilla" 9210 - i.e. the "i" model you now own boasts some noticeable improvements.  I've heard the "i", although having the same hardware specification of 8Mb of RAM as the older model (which I own), is more efficient at using it.  Judging by what you are saying above, this appears to be the case.  Much as I like my 9210, the one thing that drives me nuts is its limited allocation of RAM and those constant "out of memory" messages.  So is the "i" you now own really that much better at managing RAM?  Regarding the "two bottles in the shower" I find the one box solution extremely convenient too and wouldn't really want to go back to a 5mx/8210 combination again.

Sine everyone is talking about spam and a certain wirus I figured it was time to mention the anti-spam service I use...

It can be found at spam.n-dream.com and is completely free.

The service consists of a server that continually scans the users mailboxes and automatically deletes messages based on a set of rules which you can set up yourself.

One of my rules is to delete all mails with a from addressAnother rule says to KEEP anything f

A new function they're about to implement is zone blocking, which allows you to select areas you don't want to receive mails from(Like Hong Kong, South Corea and certain African states where rich people have recently died)

Of course, since this is an automatic system you can't overrule it when a friend inadvertently mentions certain pills. Therefore it stores a copy of the last 100 mails on the server so that it can be resent. It also sends a mail listing the latest 20 - 50 deleted mails (user selectable)

This mail can of course be deleted, but during the initial setup and when signning up to online services it doesn't hurt to check it.

If it is possible the service will also mail the sender and explain that the mail was blocked, and give a link to a 'safesend' webform. (I think the list admins knows what I'm talking about. sorry.... :-)

The site was recently redone, and it is now possible to access it with Opera without loading heavy graphics. (I haven't tried WEB, though, but it may work with that, too)

One thing, though: do not use the 'invalid header' checkbox among the default delete filters... It deletes EVERY M$ Don'tLook mail with attachments...
