We've been hearing rumours like this for a long time.
However, from what I can gather from this list, the ER5 doesn't have much of a future because of the lack of drivers for peripherals.
What sort of market can there be for an updated Psion machine with a dated OS?
(Personally, I'd buy it like a shot!!)

Subject: What is a CRV3 Camera battery? OT
Hi
I've been reading digital photography magazines and have noticed that in some cases, reviewed cameras are described as being able to use one CRV3 or two AA batteries. From this I would guess that the CRV3 must be a rechargeable 3V battery designed to fit in the same space as two AA's. However, I haven't found any other information on this battery and can't find it in any of the magazine ads from Jessop's and the like except for one place where it is listed for UKP 6.95 under Panasonic Lithium batteries.
What I'd like to know is whether I can use this battery in my Fuji FinePix 4700z (which takes two AA's), whether there'd be any benefit to doing so and whether it's possible to buy the CRV3 with a charger to charge it outside the camera as my Fuji doesn't have a built in charging circuit.
Offlist replies please (no large attachments), and remember I don't have access to the www.
To put this slightly on topic for the list: Would this battery be a useful option for future palmtops?

Spellcheck looks like an independent Macro. Who knows where it came from?
Translauncher, like Spellcheck, checks in Spell but only one word at a time.
SpellOK macro from Huub ExAb site performs a complete spellcheck (like in Word) and of all the words in a selected text of any length.
SpellX from the same site (+ colorised icons from Martin site ;-) makes the use of multiple spelling dictionaries a treat.
Switchdico macro also allows to easily choose from multiple Spell dictionaries.

Hi Tim - good if you write a subject when posting, makes replying and searching easier, I have given it a subject - I have seen, I think it was a ericcson r526 (something like that) and I think the erricson T39 which have a feature that allows an eternal arial extesion which allows great reception on the fringes (I think it was the sort you could even stick up a tree if you wanted) generally these phones with external arieals are best the T39 or was it a 35 not sure had excellent signal finding abilities also triband and B&W great battery life on those erricsons small and light too, also they have the essential IR to work with psion and also GPRS. In general I gather Erricson works better with Psions than Nokias, that said my 6100 works great with netbook and Phoneman.

From: Darryl Kempster <<<my netBook spontaneously reset. ...the CF in drive D I was printing from is corrupted. And unfortunately it was my main data receptacle....>>>
Nightmare - I had this using IR with a mobile phone once I now never keep anything of importance which is used rgularly on a CF except for files I have a backup of on another CF in a draw at home - sorry to hear that. I have corrupted a few CF and found that when I put them in a CF reader - in a mac though probably same for a PC - they were readable. Alternativly you could send it off to Clove or someone else with software to try to recover the info - I sent mine to Clove but they couldn't help unfortunalty, I sent it to them as I suspected the new in car charger was the cause of the trouble I brought from them, turns out it was most likly the IR timeout bug. Hope you get it sorted. I would be concerned about the random reset whileprinting and want to know what caused that so you can continue with confidence. The CF will corrupt if interupted while being written to the great backup program by Ralph sprenger checks the battery before backing up to avoid this.
I speculate maybe if you had done a softreset and the auto switch off had defaulted to 30mins if this might cause the problem with IR and softreset, though I thought this bug had been fixed in the latest OS maybe someone else can confirm this.
Kind regards
Mark
PS my belt and braces approach is a full backup of D: on to another CF, Daily backups of C; to D: - using sprengers backup app - and fairly regular full Zipped backups of C: to another CF kept in a draw using RMRZIP (a bit slow but worth it I find and not too big a file)

I have had this trouble numerous times with a mobile phone where it would not send or would only send email below 10k yet it would send fine using GPRS. I found clearing out the "sent" box helped and when that stopped working I rebuilt the index file and that helped.
<<<When connecting to the net I can hear the dial tone through the modem, but an error pops up on the Psion to say that there is no dial tone.>>> Have you tried setting it to not wait for a dial tone in the settings. another thing with the mobile phone I have heard can help, strangley, is setting the to fixed line rather than mobile, even though it is set to use IR and it is a mobile. Mysteries. That said if it was all working well with the mobile and nothing has changed then I would look at the first option of messing with the mail app maybe even try backing it up fully and then deleting the whole mail folder from system starting email app and re-entering your settings, this approach worked for me :-) when I had a similar problem and could not resolve it. Possible just deleting the commsdb.dat file might work and just re-entering your settings. Then maybe a soft reset and a hard reset, I am sure you know the procedure ;-)

There's a substantial amount of freeware available and the amount of

Also , because CE in reality spans multiple OS'es ( currently Linux , NetBSD

growing Open Source library and the likelihood of being left hung to dry is
completely absent in an environment supported by all major players in the IT

You are dead right here , these are 50 VA units with 2 24 Volt outputs , wich
can be used either in series or in parallel , or to feed two separate
,isolated 24 Volt circuits from a single 10 to 30 Volt (40 Volts top limit ! )
One of the outputs is the master , connected to the feedback loop , the other
is "free-running " i.e only protected against line fluctuations
Both outputs track each other when adjusted using the multiturn trimmer on the front of the unit
I built myself a power distibution system based on two similar units ( one 30
VA and one 50 VA , each with 2 15 Volts and one 5 Volts output and 50-150
Volts nominal input )
Essentially this meant mounting a number of professional DIN connectors (
Amphenol or Binder ) in a piece of PCB of the same size as the back cover
and wiring it in paralell with the front panel binding posts
Currently this powers my modems , the s5mx , my HP680LX , a radio and a small
LCD telly as well as a 5 Watt fluorescent nightlight
Saved me ( at the time , we're talking mid-80's here ) a bunch of wall warts
and it was/is a huge space/weight saver as well
I happen to know their Verkstaellande Direktoer ( Jan R Gustafsson , can you
chime in here and explain ?) at that time , Mr Alf Ostlund , wich even helped
me in customizing the units for this particular need
They are located in Sollentuna , a northern suburb of Stockholm
Mr Alf Ostlund and his son Eric also developed a system for nulling a ship's
magnetic field , now in use by the Swedish Navy on their coastal patrol
vessels
>>
I've also got a new 300w inverter, 12v to 230vac..
An alternative is to charge one or two 2 volt cells from the 12 volt
alternator and add them to the 12 volt car battery when stopped for
connecting to the Psion's input.<<
With that you can build simply a filtered and protected power supply for all
your Psion devices ( and other sensitive electronics as well , used this
arrangement , but with a transformer to power satelite tv receivers over the
years , never had any PSU failures , even on a model wich was notoriously
for that , now it runs a small digital receiver and two 6 Watt fluorescent
bulbs )
You need 2 33 ohms resistors , rated at 10 Watts , a 2200 microfarad 370
Volts WV electrolytic and a 1kV recurrent reverse voltage diode with a
current rating of 3 A or better
With this you can build a "T" filter that will effectively kill all nasties
that come out of your vehicle power system ( The Psion power adapters can run off a DC source ( in this case the DC
bias of the capacitor in the filter )
To meet your needs I recommend you to install both the Polyamp boxes and the
300 VA inverter
Have a nice day

The only problems I see is that NetStatRF seems to report very low signal strength in Peer-to-Peer mode. Its seems to always report 27db SNR and the 'bar' is red and at the bottom of the scale. In infrastructue mode, its a lovely long green bar!
I'm building a community wireless network to cover 37,000 households with broadband access. I use the netBook extensively for configuration and remote control. Its a great little machine for wireless networking.

Re. After Psion - Yes, a problem that has come up before on the digest. First thanks for the info about POS, I wonder whether they will really produce more 5MX machines again. Maybe the demand is that strong and maybe they will use the new screencable which will make this question a more "futuristic" one. At the moment you can either go larger to S7, netBook or smaller to the variety ot other machines around, or a combination of the two. Which machine exactly is a very personal matter of functionality and esthetics. Recently the Dana was also introduced, but it went quiet about that machine on the digest. Any update anyone on that machine ?
Answer to: Darryl Kempster
Re. Corrupted CF - I have no immediate answer for you so did not email you separately. It just shows (this for others, not for you) how important regular back-ups are (can't stress this enough). Yes, you should keep separate back-ups and not work from back-up CF cards. This was of course against the "rules" of safe computing. There are companies that specialise in recovering data, maybe you can find one in the area you are in. I still believe in keeping programs on the CF card and DATA on the C disk with a back up on a separate CF card and/or a PC. I will travel to the USA on Sunday and backed-up my S7 to a PC and also take a separate CF card with me with the C disk on it just in case something like this happens to me while traveling. If D corrupts I'll be without most of my programs but will still be able to see my diary, data and jotter files and email, the main functions.

Also any tips to avoid a repeat occurence. I thought CFs only corrupted when used with PCs to transfer data. I'm a PC free zone so thought I was immune to this problem - obviously not. Is there an actual fail proof method or have I just been lucky up till now?<
Darryl,
I'm sorry to hear about your problems and unfortunately have no further solution for it. But as for the cause: Apart from the voltage problem (which you have ruled out) it could be a problem with the individual card (faulty production or handling) or it could be an incompatability with psions. How long have you used this card and to what extent?
E.g. I had a corruption problem with a 256 MB Apacer which didn't occur until about 20+ MB of the card were used. The card worked fine in my friend's digital camera, however and I later learned from a forum that other psion users had experienced the same problems with cards of that particular build (and the Apacer 128 MB as well) while other sizes from that company were reported to work fine.
Do you know more about Jenoptik cards in psions - especially the 32 MB - or has someone else on this digest heard/ experienced something about it?
To avoid these unpleasant surprises in the future I would propose that we collect some information on cf cards: which ones have proved to be reliable, which have caused problems (corruption or insufficient speed)?
Martin Guthrie has already some data available at his homepage (which I found particularly helpful on cf cards). Maybe he could add a list or a datafile with this info? I do not have a homepage myself but volunteer to collect the data and put it into a file if someone will give it some space on the web - and provided there is sufficient interest...
If there is: the data should include company, size, reliability and speed (can be easily measured with diskbench). Since the speed is dependent on the formatting of the card it would be good to have that/ these values as well. If it's too much bother a simple 'works' or 'takes ages too write' will do.
What do you think about it?

JG>You do not mention the Note option on the T610. Is it possible for you to sync them with Outlook?
Since getting the phone slightly more than 2 weeks ago, I have been travelling and naturally only carrying my trusty netBook :) There is software available to sync notes on T610 with MS Outlook but I havent had a chance to try it yet. Hopefully I can get back to you early next week.
Thank yuo and regards,
Koi Hin

Subject: Re: tri-band GSM cell phone (4 Tim)
"Non-PDA question: I'm looking for a tri-band GSM cell phone with the best fringe area reception/transmission. I don't really care one way or another about size, but yes I still want it small enough that I can carry it (no 1.5watt units please). Also I would rather skip color since that kills battery life.
I have heard that the Nokia 6310i is good. Any suggestions?"
I'm not an expert but my wife's 6310i has *excellent* reception capabilities, IMO. Much better than any of her friends phones, so she tells me. The battery life is very good, as well.
I researched cell-phones pretty intensively before suggesting the 6310i to her. I came across a couple of excellent reviews which ranked the 6310i up there with the best of them -- especially in terms of reception capabilities and battery life. Hope that helps.

Subject: Re. nB petition & *.CE (4 Itamar)
" - Personally I am pessimistic (in light of past experiences). I think once the new nB will be in full production they will discontinue the old nB just like they already discontinued the S7."
I decided to NOT sign the petition (boo, hiss) because I honestly don't feel it's in Psion's best interest to divert sales away from their new OS of choice. That the petition will have no impact on Psion's decision is, IMO, a given. Still, having said all of that I hope the petition succeeds :).
"We own great machines, but let's face it, sooner or later these will disappear. For me personally a keyboard is absolutel essential and in due course when I will have to make the choice, a new nB running WindowsCE might be preferable above a small notebook. It would mean a lot of adjustments, different programs, etc., but we have to move on with the time. In the meantime I will enjoy my S7 to the fullest. But, again my _personal_ opinion, as we all slowly move towards new machines sooner or later, it will be a subject that the digest should be open to."
I agree. Also, there are already nB alternatives out there. Not as good in many ways perhaps, but certainly more than just workable. Personally, I could survive with either the new Dana Wireless (Palm OS) or the new MobilePro 900 (WinCE). AAMOF, I plan to pick up a Dana at some point for my daughter -- instead of another MnetBook for the simple reasons that it can run on AA's, is even simpler to use and is of even more durable construction than the nB.

Subject: Re: EBook and ExtraBars colour icons
"There were problems with the original colour icons for EBook and ExtraBars that I created inasmuch as they lost the MIME recogniser information (hence EBook couldn't recognise the TCR, PDB, etc. files). Thanks largely to the efforts of Andrew Gregory, these have now been corrected in the download files."
Hi Martin,
So what's the secret? How did Andrew fix the problem with these two AIF's? An inquiring mind wants to know!

Subject: Case Logic's nB case :)
Case Logic made a lightly padded case (Case Logic PSC-1) for the PlayStation One that is quite cheap ($20 CDN or less), and which fits the netBook perfectly. It has a large felted pouch on the front (for styluses, CF cards, PCMCIA cards and adapters, pens, pencils and notepads, etc.) and a little handle (that can be converted to a shoulder strap). I find this case to be of a near-perfect design for carrying my MnetBook around and adding a bit of protection to boot. Most importantly the handle means I'm unlikely to drop my precious netBook. A little geeky perhaps - but isn't 'geek chic' in nowadays?
FWIW, I picked my case up at Radio Shack store here in Toronto. Last time I looked they were being cleared out all over the Web as well. Maybe hard to find -- but well worth the effort.

Subject: Word CRAAAASSSHH!
I copy/pasted a bit of text from Email into a text (Editor) file and then into a new Word file and a bit later while editing the new file Word crashed with the following error:
Program: Word
Reason code: E32User-CBase
Reason number 21
Can anybody decipher this for me?
I reopened the file again and again and each time the file crashed during editing. Interestingly, since doing a Select All and then a Remove formatting (Shift-Ctrl-I) the file has stopped crashing.
BTW, I *had* been seeing frequent Word crashes for a while - till I stopped copy/pasting from HTML files into Word from Web - which I discovered quite effectively screws up Word's ability to apply its own styles and causes the app to quickly bug out. Looking at the crashing Word files with a hex editor showed that a copy/paste from Web to Word was bringing over hidden html styles coding which seemed to be the reason Word couldn't apply its own styles any longer and why Word was crashing. Opera leaves formatting behind when text is copy/pasted from it into Word - so I only noticed the problem with Web and Word.
