Hi all,

I analysed all Digests from the #1 to #300.

It's very interesting.

Unfortunately more than 200 subscribers prefer to be anonymous. They didn't inform us about theirs country.

Take a look at Francis' website

Subject: Re. REAL alternatives to the Netbook?

Itamar,

My current Palm is a Tungsten T (I have previously had a Vx, m505 and m515) and I am very pleased with it in general.  I'm not going to upgrade to the Tungsten T2 since it is a bit of an expensive jump for a better screen and more internal memory but I may go for the Tungsten T3 when that finally appears.

The synchronisation of data between my netBook and Palm was a bit of a pain and was generally done via Outlook.  I would have loved a direct synchronisation method between my netBook and Palm but sadly I don't think that it will ever happen so an intermediary stage is needed.  My Apple can directly synchronise with my Palm which means that the two can be kept in sync very easily.  In addition, Palms tend not to mind being synchronised with more than one PC so I sync it with Palm Desktop at work, Outlook at home on my desktop PC and Palm Desktop on my iBook.

To answer your final question, since getting the iBook I have only rebooted a handful of times (all but one due to having to after installing system updates ... the one being an application I was testing crashing badly and I wanted to make sure that it was out of memory completely before removing it) and I always leave it in standby.

After almost two weeks I still smile when I open the case and up pops everything exactly as it was left.  Having said that I haven't

travelled that much with it yet and, like my netBook, it tends to sit in my office at home ready for when I want to collect emails, write a quick letter, etc.

I will post another full update on how things are going shortly but, in brief, it's still a big thumbs up!

Simon

Subject: Astrid's problem

Hi Astrid,

I didn't really misunderstand your problem!

I just underestimated your attempts to resolve it and overestimated the facilities offered by Macro-type programs. I'm sorry.

I think the multiple-files extras bar facility is built into the system at a very low level. I know that Richard Reeve wrote that the extras bar probably had a very high priority and he couldn't even get his program to detect it (Remapper help file). If this is the case I suspect you need a fundamental utility accessing the system extras bar and side silk-screen *or* a utility completely replacing the extras bar with this facility built-in and extended to the side silk-screen.

I haven't used ExtraBars but obviously that doesn't help. I have used (and registered) HotKeys, a Macro5-type utility, and I don't think that will. I don't actually think such a utility has been written for ER3/5, though it would probably be well-used.

Sorry.

Happy days,

Phil.

Gary Y Reyes wrote

> Could you describe to us what exactly you did to solve the Revo battery problem that has now kept you a happy camper for over 3 years on the Revo?>

Nothing special. Soon after I bought it I had to return it to Psion to get the battery repaired. After that I charged it up to 100% the first time, and there was no problem after that. I normally let the Revo discharge to about 15% or so before I recharge it. Kevin Millican has written a lot about Revo batteries. You can look at his stuff at http://www.millican.info/

Answer to: Bronwen Manby

Re.: Printing problem - I also had printing problems after an upgrade in the office. In the end the installers solved it by upgrading the printer software to the latest version from the website of the printer makers. Our error was different, but maybe this solution will solve your problem as well.

Answer to: Rick Gillyon

Re. Street Planner US - I suppose TomTom never bothered to make agreements to get USA maps as the Psion did not (really) sell there anyhow. Did you consider realmaps and create your own maps from available ones on the internet ? (I never tried it).

Answer to: Philip Carlisle

Re. Exchange files - I use nConvert quite often to convert WORD files up and down from Psion to PC and back. Usually I will convert to RTF and than from RTF to either WORD again. The file is larger than a WORD file but I find it the best way.

Answer to: Thomas F. Van der Zijden

Re. Ethernet - It is still not clear in my mind what the use is of an ethernet or wifi connection with the nBook. If you connect what can you do on the Psion ? Can you see the disk of the PC/Server ? Can you transfer files ? Can you run programs as a terminal ? Pls explain, thanks in advance.

<<<Stephan Block rightly noticed that  I was inaccurate and letting believe that PAYG sim (with no contract) allows GPRS connection. For GPRS access, one positively needs a  monthly based contract AND the noted GPRS Option>>>

Some networks do allow GPRS access with a p-a-y-g SIM card. I have established a GPRS connection with my 6310i and a p-a-y-g SIM with Orange

in the UK - this is full internet access, not WAP.

Subject: RE: Calendar 'not enough memory' error

Can anyone help? My MC218 (5MX) calendar has now grown to 900K and I find an intermittent fault with the error message 'not enough memory' coming up when I try to open it. This despite 4MB on my C drive and 40 MB + on my CF card. The problem is soluble on a temporary basis by creating a blank calendar file and then using 'file/open' from within calendar, but this is obviously not ideal. Pressing the calendar button or clicking the filename from file manager produces the problem. Soft reset fails to resolve it, and it does not seem to matter what else is open. Any suggestions?

Hello,

does anybody happen to know how on Earth can I make he Convert Files app from Psiwin to start in my Documents folder and not in C:\Program Files\Psion which is the installation folder? I tried virtually everything but to no avail.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Have a nice day

Hi, (for Rick mainly)

>>Anyone know of a good street-map program for the 5mx for the Florida area? I'm stunned to discover there are no add-on maps for Street Planner of the US!<<

I too wanted a Street Planner for the USA but since TomTom don't do one I got their Route planner instead.  There are 15 maps but since they only have abbreviated names (G_AK, G_AR, G_CA, G_CO. G_DC, G_FL, G_HI, G_IL, G_KY, G_MA, G_MN, G_MT, G_NC, G_NY, G_TX) I can only guess some of the states that they represent.

I have only used 2 of the maps, NY and California and the level of detail for the roads are quite different between the two maps.  The NY one covered Philadelphia and for a particular little town that I visited, Washington Crossing, it showed the same level of road detail that I get from "Street Planner".   However the streets were not named and so it could not be used for street to street route planning.  In contrast to this the California map for Palm Dessert only shows a level of road detail that Route does in Britain!!

I have just loaded G_FL on to my 5mx and had a quick look at Kissimmee.

From what I can judge the level of detail is comparable to "Street" but again the streets are not named.

Rick, I don't know if this helps a lot but for what it is worth there it is, If you let me know the towns you wish to visit I'll check them out in more detail for you.

Regards

David

Subject: Email in foreign coutnries

Hello all, first I live in the UK... I have no problems sending and recieving emails on my 5mx via Nokia 6210e - my usual ISP is Freeserve Anytime (i.e. a monthly fee and subsequently a freephone number for internet access), but as this is limited to a single BT line I simply dial the Freeserve local rate telephone number.

I am off to the Republic of Ireland for a week in a weeks time and at first I was not worried; surely I thought I will have no problems simply making an international call to Freeserve local rate to pick up my emails. However I now recall that Freeserve log one's phone number as a form of SMTP auth... so though I should be able to read my mail fine, will i be able to send any? My understanding was that calls from overseas do not send their number - any suggestions for solutions? Worth setting up e.g. an eircom account just for 1 week and probably not more than 3 or 4 short sessions?

Many thanks,

Simon

PS interesting to see the iBook surface again a a potential Psion replacement - I have a 5mx and an iBook; my wife has a NetBook and those are our only computers. I simply need the iBook's audio, video and imaging capabilities for making a website www.clarsach.net, and because of that I put up with its faults - battery dies in a few hours, poking the screen does nothing (though a US company will fit a touchscreen if ££$$ is no obstacle) and the whole thing being really rather large and heavy and fragile (Actually the new tiny PowerBook is smaller than the iBook). I use a "Keyspan USB PDA adapter" which works really well with John Montgomery's Java Psion Link, and also I have a USB CF reader as our camera uses CF.

To answer your questions Itamar, I have seen apple's iSync demonstrated on a friends machine - basically you connect your phone, palm, iPod (mp3 player), kitchen sink etc. to the ibook and press one big shiny button and it automatically merges and updates all your calendars and diaries with the latest changes. (made me feel sick, the effort of making a straight file backup psion -> ibook!) And I leave the iBook in "sleep" mode permanently (with all my applications open) - it only gets shut down and rebooted when I go away without it for a few days, or when it crashes or starts misbehaving, which happens sometimes after a few days, somtimes not for a couple of weeks.
