One for the collectors out there. Before posting this onto Ebay I'll let the Digest have first look. I have an as new Psion Series 3c 2mb (backlit) for sale. It is unused, and has the original box, manuals, packaging and box inserts with it. It's been bought, but never used.

If anyone is interested in this machine (it's probably good for a collection) please email me.

Answer to: Thomas F. VAN DER ZIJDEN

Re.: Leaving the Netbook open - Yes, the auto shut off control should do it, but it does not do it if you have any program running that prevents it from doing so, and there appear to be quite a few programs that acutally do prevent it (I am not sure which ones). The test is to close all programs, set the S7 to switch off automatically, leave it open and see if it does. If so, do the same again after opening each program until you find the offending program (you can do it of course with 1 minute, no need to wait 20 minutes each time <G>).

"Add colour support to Jason Kneen's ExtraBars!"

Version 1.07 adds:-

o ExtraBars patch for Task switcher (now correctly displays in the bottom-right of the screen on a netBook / Series 7).

o Option added for position of ExtraBars selector (top left or bottom left of screen - again, only on a nB/S7).

o ExtraBars patch for Shortcut Prefixes background colour (used to restore background to grey if you toggled 'Show prefixes on shortcuts').

o ExtraBars patch for 'Refreshing extrabar' to colour (used to be grey).

See my website for further details and download.  Freeware.

I have happily e mailed throughout this onslaught on Microsoft safe in the knowledge that EPOC and Psions would be immune. I did notice four suspicious messages clearly virus ridden and deleted them. Much to my suprise I have received two recent "failed delivery" messages which appear to be infected messages I have tried to send on. This puzzles me since I have not touched a windows e mail system throughout the last week or so and my PC machine also appears completely healthy. I cannot believe these rogue e mails are infiltrating a Psion e mail address book? Can anyone cast any light on this?

In my experience, there are three ways of messing up the Revo's battery management:

1. If you charge the machine whilst it is switched on.

2. If you disconnect the power supply before the machine has received a full charge.

3. If you use a third party power supply that is unable to supply the full current the Revo charging system needs.

The last is the surest way of causing havoc and will particularly apply to Europan Mako owners who have bought third party power supplies. There are two ways this can mess things up:

1. If the power supply can only supply 2-300mA, the battery will never get hot enough to trigger the protective temperature sensitive shutoff, so the machine will continue to charge at 2-300mA long after the battery is full and ruin the battery.

2. If the charger is only able to supply 2-300mA, the battery management software will still think it's getting the full 450mA charge, and use this figure when updating the battery status. This means the software will show a full battery when it's really only half full.

Which one of the above you experience seems to depend on whether the machine is on or off when it's being charged.

My solution to the Revo/Mako battery problem is very simple:

1. I never ever charge the machine whilst it is switched on.

2. I never ever partially charge the machine. When I charge the machine, I always give it a complete charge of at least 8 hours.

3. I trust the red and green charging lights and disregard what the software is telling me. (This is the advice given by Psion.)

4. I make sure to use a power supply which is rated at at least 500mA. (In fact, I charge my Mako/Revo from a 6V 12Ah lead acid battery.)

I have not found the charge level when I put the machine on charge to be an issue at all, but I don't charge it if it's almost full. I normally put the machine on charge every evening before I go to bed and take it off charge the first I want to use it the next day. The only times I don't put it on charge in the evening is if I haven't used it during the day or if I've only used it for a few minutes. (Or if I forget to put it on charge...)

The reason people are esperiencing less problems by waiting until the machine is down to 15% is probably that waiting until it is that low in most cases means you will give it a full 8 hour charge before you use it again, and this in my opinion is the key to Revo charging. Of course it would have been even better if Psion hadn't made a mess of the charging system in the first place, and a small round cover with a coin slot in the left rear corner of the machine with the option of user replacing the battery would have been very useful.

My present machine has been heavily used for long enough that the casing was falling apart. It has been rejuvinated today by installing my 16Mb Mako motherboard into the casing of a 8Mb Revo which another user had discarded because of battery problems (Thanks Derek). This is being typed on the rejuvinated machine.

Interestingly, I 'm still using the battery Derek was having problems with. I charged it overnight yesterday before dismantling it, and moved the Mako motherboard over today. The machine has been used quite a lot today with restoring everything from the backup etc and is now showing a 40% charge level. It'll be interesting to see whether I have problems with this battery. If I do, I'll move the other one over from the old Mako.

Subject: Motorola withdraws from Symbian alliance and join forces with Microsoft

Dear all,

Sad news appeared on many news sites today:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mobile phone heavyweight Motorola is in talks to sell its share in the Symbian software alliance to mobile manufacturer Nokia and Psion, who will each end up with more than a 30% share in Symbian. The 4.8% share to be bought by Psion will cost 17,4 million UKP, while Nokia has not released a figure for their 13% acquisition. The total extrapolated value for Symbian is 300 million UKP.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Motorola has decided to use Microsoft SmartPhone in all future developments. It is sad but not surprisingly the way Motorola have acted for quite some time.

BTW, Motorola launched their Symbian smartphone A920 in an event in London yesterday. That will surely be the last one from Motorola running SymbianOS.
