Subject: Psion 7 for Revo Plus
Unfortunately my self repair of my 5mx screen cable has now failed. I
bought a mini keyboard for my Clie but it still is not as good as the
Psion keyboards. The soon to be released Sony UX50 looks quite good but
the keyboard looks quite dodgy. I have a Psion 7 that I never use and it
occurred to me that I could sell it to buy a Revo plus or even swap it
with someone.
Does anyone know the going price for second hand 7's ?
Or does anyone fancy swapping a Psion Revo plus for a Psion 7.

I had similar problems with screen calibration which went away, just realised
that its because I have not used WinEpoc 2.6 recently. Never experienced this
problem with the earlier version.
The problem appears to go away when you stop using it, so no need to un-instal
the software.

Finally managed to do a hard reset and recharge the Revo. Now working
fine with the step down to trickle charge ocurring bang on 85%.
Maybe everyone else knew this but the trick turned out to be pressing in
the paperclip to holes A&B and then holding for a count of 30. I only
came across this by accident while browsing a Revo-related forum - would
have been nice if Psion could have included this info in the manual!

Subject: Motorola Leaving Symbian,
Answer to: Itamar Engelsman
>>>Re.: Motorola Leaving Symbian - Why is it so important for Symbian to have a balanced consortium ? Maybe if Nokia have the lion part of the shares it will guarantee Symbian that Nokia - one of the larger players in the mobile phone industry - will continue to use them. Does that not guarantee their continued exsistence and success ?<<<
As far as Nokia goes, I do not think they will move away from Symbian no matter what. Their roadmap for the next 7 years is clearly Symbian and Symbian remains superior compared to the alternatives. Symbian does not need to worry about Nokia regardless of whether they stay at 19 share equity or 32. But one dominant shareholder might not be what *other* shareholders and/or licencees want to see. It is instrumental for Symbian to be open to many handset manufacturers rather than one or two dominant ones.
Furthermore, the Europeans now control about 80 (Psion+Nokia+Ericsson). I think a stronger Asia&Pacific shareholding would benefit Symbian in the long run, in particular from Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
kind regards

Subject: Psion and T610, Back-up, Additional PDA, Motorola Leaving Symbian, Netbook Pro.
Answer to: Wong Koi Hin
Re.: Psion and T610 - Thanks for the answer. Do you find that the synchronisation via outlook works without problems and that the capacity of your phone is large enough to contain all your contacts and appointments, to-do's etc. ? As to the screen outside, I suppose it also depends on what Theme you use. On the "classical" it is a lot better than on the "deep blue" I tried out before.
Answer to: Arne Christensen
re. Back-up - You wrote "My NetBook had the same problem for some time until I did a backup last week". I advise you to back-up a lot more regularly than that to avoid loss of data if something will happen to your Psion.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. Additional PDA - Thanks again for your extensive answer. As said, I understand what you are saying and don't necessarily disagree. The prices are interesting, and just out of interest, which one would you (and others) advise from this list ? The P800 is a good choice I am sure if you use it's capabillities to the fullest. But as said, I would look for a smallish limited functionality flat PDA mainly for diary and contacts only to have with me on the occasions that my S7 and/or T610 will not be with me (yes, I am still "able" to go out without a mobile with me <smile>) and that will fit easily in shirt and/or jacket pockets noted the danger of falling). Nowaday's Phoneman will not synchronise the multiple phonenumbers per contact anymore (AFAIK) and I use it solely to send SMS messages for easier typing. Most contacts have 2 or 3 numbers in my contact book.
Answer to: Chris Handley
Re. Motorola Leaving Symbian - I am sure Symbian would love to grow as large as Microsoft <G>. For Nokia investing further in Symbian probably assures them of Symbian's continuation and assures them of the OS for their phones not wanting to use Microsoft. Sorry but I fail to see why that is bad for us.
Answer to: David Steer
re. Netbook Pro... - I don't think you need to invest. Contact an existing supplier like Clove and ask them to get a principle decision from Psion whether they will deliver such an order or not. Than Clove can give the market 2 weeks to subscribe to the order and if there is enough interest they can close the deal.

Re.: I'm in Spain! - Congratulations. In a way I suppose we are all a little jealous at the way you roam the world from place to place taking in all the wonderful new places. But alas, with family to feed that is rather difficult. I wish you success and enjoy !
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
T610 used with a Psion - Yes, I just tried it, the T610 will synchronise SMS's with the S7. A couple of digests ago someone mentioned fax works as well. I am sorry but it does not have a speakerphone. Phoneman supports the phone as well.

My settings on my netBook are as follows:
settings for modem
Name: Ericsson HSCSD
Spped: 57600

KT>Does the "sychronise with phone" menu option within the Psion's Email app work with this handset i.e. can you send SMS and transfer received SMS to the Psion?
Yes, it works both ways.
KT>Does it have a handsfree speakerphone?
Not on mine, unless I have missed out this feature!
KT>Does the "Phoneman" app support this handset?
I can't asnwer this as I don't have Phoneman installed on my netBook, perhaps someone else will answer.

Subject: This Digest is .....
......an absolutely fantastic resource - and not just for Psion users.
Over the last few years there have been all sorts of titbits of information that I have found to be useful. Now that we are really drawing towards the final years of ER5(be honest!), I am finding that I am still picking things up.
OK, they are less and less EPOC biased, but tending to focus on pros and cons of the latest mobile phone handsets and mobile data in general.
Now that GPRS is on the increase, I reckon there ought to be more and more demand for websites now that have low graphic content to keep the costs down where possible, whereas before only a few people wanted them, and then only to keep the length of the call down.
About to go off topic so be warned :) even worse some may say I'm about to enter a windows zone!!! Bear with it please, it isn't really.
Are there any lists of links to wap, text only or low graphics webstes out there?
I am shortly to be working in Scotland for a week taking some Russians sailing (don't ask) and so have just had a hunt for text only versions of web sites with weather information. Here are the links I have found in case they are of use to others :-
BBC shipping forecast, also has a link to the inshore waters forecast:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/education/betsie/parser.pl/0005/www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/shipping.shtml
Onlineweather.com's PDA site:- http://pda.onlineweather.com/ no cost at the moment, but their main site suggests it may
become a pay to use service in the future.
Tide times and heights for selected UK ports:- http://www.pol.ac.uk/wap/tides.wml I could only view this one with Opera
- am I correct in thinking that Opera can cope with wap pages where Internet Explorer can't?
Multimap light:- http://www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi?client=light
In another attempt to keep overall email costs down, and cut down on vulnerability to viruses I also use The Bat! ( which
somebody on the Digest suggested, sorry I can't remember who you were, but thanks). I find this is good as you get to see
a message list, just like on the Psion, before selecting whether to view, download or delete a mail.
Are there any other applications out there which perform similar tasks to our favourite Epoc software, or bring other
advantages to windows users? As this is off topic, feel free to reply off-digest, though I reckon other peoples
recommended websites may be of interest at least.
All the best,
John Wetton
PS Owen - thanks for the message, glad to hear you got in OK.

Subject: First posting
Hi All !!
Having owned a variety Psions - '91 Series 3, '96 3a, and sometime after that a 5 and 5MX, I thought that I may as well make my first posting - well, better late than never!
I would like to thank you all for the fun, arguements, information, help - and just sheer entertainment, that these pages have given me over many years and
in some remote countries around the World.
Well done everyone!
My 5MX has just gone back to POS for a screen cable repair for the second time in 18 months. The first failure was in Feb '02 and after that I decided to
open and close it much lee in order to reduce the flexing on the cable. At work I would open it first thing in the morning and leave it open all day. On journeys to and from the office it has been protected in a hard shell case.
I expressed my disappointment to POS at the unit failing again so quickly and described my daily usage. "Ahhh" they said, "You don't want to do that - it
can cause the screen cable to harden and then break".
Er, hang on a minute here - if I keep opening and closing it regularly the cable breaks, and if I keep it open, the cable hardens and breaks?
A case of heads you lose, tails you lose, methinks?
Whilst the 5MX was away for repair, i tried to install the V5 OPL PC emulator down loaded from www.garethsaunders.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ps_emu132.htm and tried to install it on my ThinkPad running Win98. It generates the following error message:-
"An error occurred during the move data process: -113
Component OPL SDK
File Group: OPL SDK
File: C:\EMULATOR\aleppo\projdir\AleppoHelp.alp"
A similar message occurs when I try to install the Java PC emulator.
Any clues team?
Kind Regards,
Malcolm

Subject: Programming for the Not Very Clever At All
Hi All
I have always held programmers in the highest regard; mainly because I haven't got the wit to understand how it all works. I once wrote a little prime number application, but it was fairly awful, although it did (surprisingly) work! Just not as efficiently as it might have!
With the start of the long Shetland winter nights only a few weeks away, what I want is a simple explanation of how an application is written for the following scenario: -
I have a number of "different" items in a sack, say 10 for the sake of argument. One is picked, leaving nine items in the sack. How does the programmer write the application so that if I put my hand in the sack I can only now pick one of the nine items and not the item that I have already taken?

Subject: Email address management
Hello,
recently I noticed that I maintain 4 files with email addresses:
contacts (only a few; best interface to Email app)
data (my main "contacts" application)
REM (Repy Every Mail) address list
Not often used address list on PC (Outlook Express)
Simplification is called for.
How do the list members manage/sync their email address data?
How do you keep your different mail collections up-to-date?
Is Conversion Data to Contacts advisable/necessary?
--------
To Itamar:
I remember that you said:
"Data is my main address app. Conversion to Contacts of email addresses only."
What were the reasons?
Which Program did you use for this selected conversion?
There are many, not all work.
--------
From long net search I learned that Outlook express is particularly bad for syncronizing Address data. But I do not want to buy Outlook, because I do most of my emails with the MC218 anyway.
Which are your favourite Email apps for the PC except Outlook? (Eudora? Pegasus? ...)
How do they sync with the Psion?
