Subject: Palm OS and Multitasking

Hi, everybody...

Can anybody tell me, if PalmOS is a multitaskign operating system or not? I'm very interested in the new Sony UX-50, it seems a fair good replacement for my beloved Series 5MX (although no gadget whatsoever can really compete with it... :) but one question is still unanswered: Is PalmOS 5.2 (which is the version that comes with the Sony) a multitasking OS or not? My 5MX handles about 15 open applications at a time and as you all know it is really easy and fast to switch between them...

Thanks in advance

But..it still has a useless keyboard. What is it with PDA manufacturers? When Psion introduced the Psion 5 we had a great PDA with a keyboard that could be used for serious work. All PDA manufacturers opted for the standard handheld form factor but are now drifting back to providing models with integrated keyboards. By next year or 2005 we will no doubt have PDA's with Psion 5 type keyboards and we will all be saying.sorry but were we not here 5 years ago..

Subject: Reply to Itmar & Owen re Owner Information

Hi Itmar,

Your comment:

..I find it somewhat lower specified than for example the Sony Clie. You

made a quick choice on the basis of your familiarity with Dell, but did you

check that this machine fully fulfilled your requirements ?

I can answer a very definite YES. It was your post after all which

encouraged me to actually appraise what I really needed, not wanted, from a

netBook replacement/PDA.

However, I can understand why you'd say what you did if I was looking for

raw computing capabilities, but that's my whole point, I'm not.

I said previously, and I still do, I am only looking for a simple machine

that could handle my agenda entries and contacts details because that's all

I ended up using my netBook for. It doesn't even matter if it doesn't handle

these functions as well as my netBook because I can soon learn to live to

with the limitations.

If the replacement machine can handle any more than this, which the Axim

can, i.e. Pocket PC Office applications, WiFi networking/internet access,

Bluetooth etc., then this a bonus, but not necessary. Any function that it

can't handle, then I have my JVC with me, or my Dell Inspiron 8200 (P4M

2.4Ghz/120GB HDD/1GB RAM) running from a docking station, using a 17" TFT

Display and M/$ IrDA keyboard and mouse at home. Now can you understand my

choice?

Hi Owen,

FWIW my Owner Information I have displayed is:

********************REWARD IF FOUND********************

If found please contact the owner, Gary Jenkinson

     Tel: +44 (0)2476 361242 or +44 (0)7771 635754

***************************************************************

In event of accident or emergency please contact

                Adrian Jenkinson (Brother)

     Tel: +44 (0)1483 xxxxxx or +44 (0)7775 xxxxxx

This nicely fits the whole input box available. I did consider putting my

parents contact details in there, but thought it would be best, particularly

if something nasty happened, then news like that would be best coming from

my brother. That's my two ha'ppeth worth!

Mind you, this Owner Information won't be for much longer because as you

know from the last Digest and my post above I have a redundant netBook +

extras for sale. I'll have to learn a new owner log-in screen now!

A. Because they want to!  :¬)))))

Subject: 5mx - help required please?

Hi all,

This is probably very basic but any help would be appreciated. I have just been given a 5mx, but without any instructions, CD, charging unit or a PC connector. I realise the power cable from my Series 7 is the wrong size.  However, can I use the S7 cable that links to the PC, with the 5mx and use the CD that came with the S7 to install and back up information/programmes?  Also I tried sending my agenda from the S7 to the 5mx by IR,  but it told me I couldn't do this, although I know I can send back and forth from a Revo. Does anyone know if I can send information from one to another?

Many thanks for any help!

Jim,

>> Can anyone out there help me to solve another problem?

My 5mx shows power to the machine when plugged into the mains, but the computer will not switch on.  Neither will it switch on on battery power (yes - all batteries have been replaced). <<

I've had this happen 2 or 3 times on my 5mx, and on all occasions, a soft reset was enough to get things working again. I've no idea what the problem is; I thought it might be do with the switch which detects if the 5mx is open or not, but if so, I'm not sure why a soft reset would help.

Hope this helps, cheers, Ian.

Subject: Hats off to POS

My 5mx pro broke down at the end of the holidays, taking with it all my non backed-up files.

At Orly airport, I stuffed it along with an airline pillow into a prepaid parcel and sent it off to POS.

Two weeks later, here it is, back in the Caribbean, fully repaired. Although the machine was well over the three months' warranty period, POS have most kindly repaired it free of charge.

Is that a bird I hear singing? Is that the sun shining? Why has my life suddenly reverted to Technicolor?

Thanks, POS, I needed that.

Whist I agree with Owen on his method of rebuilding the Index file, I'm not fully convinced that a line drop or the number of records has caused Ealasaid and Simons problem in the first place.

My new netBook exhibits exactly the same problem - ie a total freeze in email when using the IR port to connect to my Internet service to send and receive emails. I have only 3 emails in my Inbox. I have connected about 5 times and it has hung twice. It also hangs when sending and receiving IR info from my 5MX. I have used the IR port on my 5MX to connect to my Siemens 35i all over the World without any problems at all.

I'm beginning to suspect some netBooks have a somewhat iffy IR

port?
