Subject: Psion Dacom Gold Card

I got a 56K Psion Dacom Gold Card to use on my Series 7, but when I try to use it, I get a message that it's not responding and to make sure it's connected and on. It seems to be inserted securely, and the connection to the telephone line also seems secure. The Control Panel indicates that the modem is the Psion Dacom Modem. What am I missing?

You can export your Data as text.

You can convert this text to Mac-readable format (and viceversa) with: Mac2Five2Mac

a freeware program for the Mac (OS 9) from Atelier software. Atelier is gone, so if you can't find it write offline and I'll see if I still have it around.

This does not solve the problem of having your info in a data-bank, though, so you'll need some further reading:

http://www.physi.uni-heidelberg.de/~vwalter/my/Homepage.html

http://www.simonwilliams.com/html/psion5imac.html

I haven't used them in a while, so I don't know if they still exist, but these sites helped me transfer my adress-data between a Mac (OS 9) and Psion 5MX a few years ago.

I hope this helps for starters.

Thanks to everyone who has reported similar problems, I do wonder if it

is a genuine issue from 3 weeks ago or if it's like the flaws in car

windscreens, once its raised in public everyone starts noticing it?

Perhaps we should try and list what dialups do cause it and what ones

don't?

We have narrowed down the problem... we got a second Psion IR travel

modem, which made no difference (though it's nice to have a duplicate).

However we realised that it never happened using the Freeserve local

rate ("No Ties") dialup service, only the freephone 0808 ("Anytime")

service. Since only dialling up the local rate number with the netbook

and 5mx, we have suffered no crashes - and last night an experimental

"anytime" dialup caused a crash.

So we phoned Freeserve and threatened to stop paying them the £14 a

month "Anytime" fee, and they seemed interested in the problem and

promised to call us on our mobile number on Monday, to see what is

happening when we dial up. (perhaps they would have been less interested

in supporting Psion users if we had phoned their premium rate technical

support line and said we had a problem? Who knows...) Anyway we'll

report back what their verdict is.

Simon

My guess is that there a number of ways to do this...

1. If your contacts can be moved to the contacts application you can save them as V-cards, then email them as attachments (or one zipped attachment) to your new Apple machine. The export operation can be done in one step from within Contacts. There is a utility available on the Macro5 website to transfer data to Contacts if required.

2. Again using Contacts, you could export them to a text file using an application such as C2F.

3. From data you could export the data as tab separated data and try to import this on the Apple.

4. You could synch the data (say to Outlook). The Outlook data *.PST may possibly be readable directly on the Mac if you are using Entourage.

I'm waiting on a yummy new PowerBook to arrive, so may have exactly

this problem to crack too. My plan is to try 1 - 3 in that order, avoiding the Outlook option as (a) I don't synchronise data and (b)

I've long since stopped installing any application beginning with the word 'Outlook'.

Hope one of these helps.

Cheers,

Steve

No, but they do have the advantage that they have the inside knowledge

of Windows to enable their software to be optimised for Windows much

more than the competitors. This is an opportunity denied to all other

developers in the closed source world of MS.

Easy. In Email, hit address AND THAN START TYPING the first few letters of the name you're looking for.

Clock: in Clock, go Menu / Tools / Format.

Now we all await a similar announcement for the 5mx.  (who should be so lucky!)

If I try to use Navigator to unzip a zip file that was written by RMRzip with the icon preference active, Navigator sees the RMRzip UID in the file before it bothers to check the recognizers, decides this file ain't mine to mess with and tries to hand it over to RMRzip which ain't there. ....

Owen, thanks for this tip. My MyNotes application is available from my website in both ZIP and SIS formats. However, I've recently been unable to open the ZIP file directly under Windows XP, even though it is correctly recognised as a compressed archive. I thought it might be something to do with XP itself, as the file could be opened using WinZip on my work PC, and even PkUnzip was able to extract the contents without any trouble. Now that I've followed your advice, XP can open it.

Cheers, Ian Chapple.
