Hi boy! I have a serious new problem with my Psions, when I connect to internet! The connecttion go OK, but after a few seconds or minutes my Psion freezes-up.  Often the only solution is a soft reset other a Crtl+Shift+Fn+K wake-up my Psion! Psion go right only if the connection go down! Do you know some solution

Would it have been possible to supply the machine with the possibility of installing ER5?

Hi Scott,

Try Plan5 from Twiddlebit: http://www.twiddlebit.com/

It can read and write Microsoft Project files (MPX) I believe...

Subject: Revo's Phone application request; Revo mystery crash musings

Does anybody know if there is any way to make "Phone" extract all the numbers linked to a name (in my Nokia 6210e's phone memory)? Right now it only takes the "lead" number & ignores the extra ones, e.g. it takes J Smith (main) 01234 567890, but does not take J Smith (Home) 01345 678901 or J Smith (Mobile) 07788 991100, unless these extra numbers are listed separately under their own names.

On the subject of the Revo/EPOC mystery crash I can confirm that I have not had any lock-outs on any other applications such as SMS & fax etc which use the IR-linked modem on my Nokia, only on Email & Opera, dialing up using the pay per minute service of Freeserve.co.uk. This suggests to me that it is an ISP issue, where something is being transmitted that overwhelms the poor EPOC device, but which the mighty PC manages to cope with (I dial up to my Freeserve account with Outlook Express & a 56k modem to the same phone number that my Revo dials to, without problems).

Thanks

Thought for the day: one "Thought for the Day" per day is quite sufficient, thank-you, & also (same thought) one email signature per day can often be one too many.

Scott,

Try 'Plan' from www.twiddlebit.com

It has a shareware version, which if it convinces you, you can buy if wish. It costs GBP15 or US25.

It allows creation of Gant & Pert charts, and IIRC, can import/export to M$Project by MPX and CSV filetypes.

I've tried using it in a 5mx and didn't get very far. Maybe I should try harder.

I've just visited their website and it looks the dogs.

Subject: Ir Backup Solution

To all,

1. I have found a reasonably good solution to backup Psion devices via Ir.  I found this via Martin Guthrie's site.  It is called IrCOMM2k and can be found at:

http://www.ircomm2k.de/

It creates a Virtual COM port and allows you to use the USB port as a serial port.  It is still in alpha release and I still need to fiddle with it at times, sometimes connecting the Psion takes a little bit longer than with the standard cable.  Bottom line I was able to use Psiwin

for backups and to print via PC.  I know many people use CF readers as a faster option to transfer files but I actually like PsiWin/EPOC

Connect for backups, converting files and especially print via PC.

2. Very upsetting to here that Symbian has been dropped for CE on the NetBook Pro.

And Psion wanting you to use a Psion CF card and a Psion AC adaptor. It's the way of the world. Companies are only trying to make an honest buck for their highly overpaid CEOs and sometimes their shareholders.

Re.: The unthinkable... - The unthinkable is what we already thought and knew, although probably wished for it not to be true. In my very humble opinion it probably means that EPOC / Symbian PDA's will probably disappear as their will be no more investment in the OS sytem required for it, although others might well think different. It certainly means no new EPOC machines and no netBook Pro version with EPOC. The superior product has bitten the dust due to it's incompatibillity with the Microsoft (compatible) software and operating system. We are all living on "borrowed time" ...... .

Re. Contacts back to DATA - Could you let the digest know where to find this program "c2f109" ?

Answer to: Janet I. Fine

Re. Sony's Hot Crossover PDA  - it might not be possible with the basic software that comes with the machine, but there are several third party programs available that will allow you to edit WORD and excel files, either directly (the more expensive one <G>) or via conversion. I suggest you look around on the web for further details.

Re.: Microsoft -  You wrote "and operating systems should not dictate who can market software to run under that system". In using the word "should" you show the problem here. By whose standards "should" an OS system yes or no do or not do this ? Sure, it would have been nicer, I agree. But this world does not run on being "nice" unfortunately. All I am trying to say is that while it would have been nicer, there is no law or rule that states that an OS system must allow this and Microsoft have the right to try and avoid others from doing so in order to advance their own corporate objectives. None of us like it, me included, but such is life. We can of course protest and buy an Apple machine or a Linux based one.

>>I noted one more disadvantage of Contacts: I planned to mark new email addresses in Contacts with .new in the Notes field, in order to update the Data file later. However, Contacts does NOT search the Notes field. It searches neither in the fields email, telefone numbers[, ...]. Very bad, since I search often in Data in the notes field, where I keep letter acronyms for hobbies etc of people (.ps for Psioneers, for example). One more reason to stick to Data as the main address application. <<

You can search in *all* fields in Contacts, using Ctrl+F (Edit - Find in All Text). I only discovered this when trying to check a phone number...

ED> http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/53/33172.html

Guess that's now the end of the line for Psion PDAs. I want to be fairly specific here, I'm _not_ talking about converged smartphones but a good old-fashioned electronic organiser such as most of us probably started with.

I'm not interested in combining phone and PDA functionality. I want a capable information management system that I can take with me like some tremendously huge wallet that includes notebooks, photo albums, dictionaries etc etc. At the moment my netBook gives me this but it can't last forever.

The move by PT to CE.Net for the netBook essentially means that my next machine will require a wholesale rethink of the entire suite of native and third-party applications. Previous upgrades with the Psion world have been nowhere near so drastic.

My own personal view is that this is now the time to simplify down to the core elements that are provided by a good late version of Palm OS. In my case Palm OS6 or above. For others, it may perhaps be appropriate to soldier on with increasingly long-in-the-tooth machines but I can see great advantages in using things like Bluetooth to synchronise with my PowerBook (if it ever arrives!) and also just to physically shrink my PDA back to the point where I can carry it with me. It will be a great shame to feel forced to give up on a great UK company after so many years.

At the end of the day, just one guy's view on the new machine though.

Subject: Netbook with WIN-CE.net

Regarding the article on the register web site i can only doubt that psion will make significant sales with a "new" netbook at that cost- an acceptable notebook is available at lower prices and people have not been willing to really accept clamshell machines in the last 2-3 years - which i personally cannot understand, i still miss many of the features of my revo/mc218 but color, synching an other problems brought me to a pcket pc and even if i dont love

the operating system (its awful in comparison to epoc) i am used to it, love

the quick synching and other benefits (i use a HP 568, and ploay around with many other "gadget" systems like for example a siemens simpad...)

The clamshell jornadas didnt turn out to be market share winners, and so

whats the sense in marketing a bigger, heavier and  more expensive machine for the same "market", especially when the (at the moment to expensive) tablet PCs are going for the same market share...?

However, good look for psion, but sometimes the ideas and targets of this company aren't really easy to understand for simple users... :-)

greetings to all the members of this very helpful and friendly digest- still

a pleasure to read - martin

Timothy,

Navigator was written for ER3, when ER5 came out there was a find option built in - it seems that this is the problem.  However, Purple Software did fix this, and some years back I returned my disk and they sent back the updated version (there is also a colour patch for it!)

I don't think the title is still available, which may mean you are not able to get an update.  However, I have the sis file, and my e-mail is just above...

In fact, Contacts can be made to search all fields, including those above, by MENU-EDIT-FIND IN ALL TEXT, or Ctrl-F

It works well for me in searching to see whose number is showing on the display of my Caller-ID telephone.

Janet,

The local Best Buy electronics store got in a few of the UX-50s. Of

course the youngsters working there didn't know much about them.

However, one salesperson told me that one can edit, as well as create,

Word and Excel-compatible files after installing software from DataViz

written for this particular Palm platform. I haven't tried to confirm

this so far, so this snippet belongs in the "for what it's worth"

category.  ;-)

I had a few minutes to browse through the UX-50 user's manual while

in the store. Seems that the unit operates for about 5 hours after

batteries are recharged. This is surely a far cry from the 30-40 hours

I get from a pair of AA batteries in my Psion 5 (Classic)! On the other

hand, the UX-50 felt very well-built.

All in all I was quite disappointed because it seemed to live up to

its description as a "personal entertainment manager," rather than a

"personal information manager".

After reading posting about the Sony Clié PEG-UX50 in Digest #338 I

went to

the web site to check it out.  Although it seems to have a lot of

exciting

features, it looks like you cannot edit Word or Excel on this machine -

only

view the documents.  If this is so it would seem that the only Clie's on

which you can edit these documents would be the ones without the built

in

keyboard.  Am I right about this?  If so, it wouldn't be the device for

me.
