If I remember right, it went like this: MS licenced it from Apple up to Mac OS version 2 or 1,5. Then they went on developing it along the same lines. When Apple's Steve Jobs threatened to sue or sued his college-chummy, MS threatened in exchange to st p developing applications for the Mac. Besides, the Apple ideas were already sort of public domain - folder symbols, windows... all the great things... The dispute remained unsolved and evolved toward that failed Apple-MS allliance some years after that. o it is even worse: sounded like blackmail...

Apologies if this has already been mentioned while I wasn?t paying attention, but I just spotted this on ZDNet:

Psion Teklogix has announced the NetBook Pro, a familiar-looking device with some brand-new capabilities.

Hi Nicholas,

One thing you should be aware of is that if you are runnthen PsiWin will never connect to your 5mx. Eand try again - you may need to start the connection manually by right-clicking on the PsiWin icon in the systray and selecting "connect" after you ave pluggen in the 5mx.

Hope this helps.

Nicolas,

I can not help you with your software problems with XP, but as an alternative way you may consider to get a CF-reader and use a Compact Flash card to transfer the files for backing up or installing new software. These (multi) card readers are not so ex ensive anymore.

Hi all,

I have a MAJOR problem that I do not know how to solve!

About 6 months ago I upgraded from Windows 98SE to XP Professional and bought from Expansys the latest version of PsiWin 2.3.3. ....... Now when I connect my 5mx, not only does my computer not detect the 5mx, but also the Copy Anywhere icon is not disp ayed in the task bar, even though the "Other Options" settings in "My Psion Properties" has been ticked for "CopyAnywhere at Connection" and "Synchronize PC and Psion clocks at Connection". You should know that I cannot connect my Psion 5mx directly to a ree serial port, because both are being used for other key devices: ..........

From: Gianluca Gallino

Subject: Symbian netBook pro

Ciao all,

I refer to both the very recent launch of the Netbook pro win ce.NET and the comments I read on the latest numbers of the "digest" in order to update you all about the most recent developments of the petition.

Beyond the understandable feelings at the view of the first official images, I wish I would underline the fact that everything we are seeing it is just the result of decisions taken many months ago, when neither the petition nor any kind of news regard ng ce.NET as the only OS supported for the new netBook were available.

The petition results are still to be seen. the number of endorsers reached quota 1820 at the time of writing and keeps on growing steadily. Please note that it has been promoted ONLY via word-of-mouth on the psion forums and newsgroups, as well as on m ny developers' epoc/symbian-related sites.

Even a number of pda e-magazines whose correspondents usually frequent the forums mentioned it. Anyway, advertising for it on other media has been avoided as no one did absolutely want that this initiative were to be misinterpreted as an anti-Microsoft campaign.

The spirit of the petition, once again, it is *not* against PT's decision of releasing a Psion netBook pro with Windows CE.net (which this initiative do absolutely respect in full), but it is just in favour of developing a *second* OS option, that is a Symbian OS one.

the reason that no much noise has been made in this period is due to the fact that no one wished to disturb the launch of the nB pro ce.net in any way because of a genuine loyalty to Psion and PT. But now that is over and done with,  it is time to announce the next move.

In fact, it is my task and in the meantime my pleasure to inform you that in order to maximize the results reached by the above-mentioned initiative, the petition promoters founded a small working team - but very motivated indeed - formed by some repre entatives of international Psion/Epoc/Symbian discussion forums and professional developers with close ties to the enterprise world, targeted market for PT. Some fellow enthusiasts complete the team. All these individuals share common values of belonging o the Symbian community.

The aim of this group is highlight  to PT some subjects such as the following:

1) Symbian is *NOT* only an OS for mobile phones.

as often it has been said in the past on the "digest" itself, if you manage to take out the phone part out of a 9210i you will find the evolution of our beloved original ER5 OS. the same would apply if you'd do the same with a P800. the excellence of E OC is still there, with updated performing capabilities ranging from better security, bluetooth, unicode etc...

2) there is a *sound* business case for a Symbian OS netBook pro in the enterprise market.

3) the development of such an OS-equipped machine would be absolutely complementary to the nB pro win ce.NET.

the result will be a series of documents including both a careful analysis of potential addressable enterprise markets for a Symbian nB pro, and a detailed technical analysys. Everything will be delivered to PT - together with the petition signatures - as soon as the work is ready.

No further details are available at the moment except for the fact that the team technicians carefully studied the netbook pro hardware specs which were publically available on a french internet site last august and managed to find out that a wide comp tibility already exists between the nB pro hardware and one of the most recent versions of Symbian OS..

Please be patient enough to wait for the material to be finished and delivered as the people involved in this task are all dealing with it as a voluntary action and each one of them is currenly busy with his respective occupation.

As a result, the match ain't over yet

This announcement will be repeated on some of the most important international and national forums. Please be kind enough to let it go around as much as you can.

All the very best

SYMBIANfully yours

Gianluca

PS: thanks to the digest subscribers who added their endorsement at www.petitiononline.com/nbookpro/petition.html

and PLS keep on spreading the word around

Answer to: Timothy H.D. Williams

Re.: Netpad? - No, for me it would not work. I use the S7 as a small notebook and the keyboard is essential in the way I use it. Without a keyboard I would have to migrate to another platform with keyboard, either another PDA or a small notebook. My ma n work on the S7 is emailing, sheet and WORD files, as well as quite extensive usage of the Agenda.

Answer to: Nicholas Bloch

Re. PC doesn't recognise my 5mx - The usage of USB ports has been covered quite extensively in this digest, see amongst others digests no. 322 "Belkin serial to USB is OK" and 350 "Belkin USB-Serial on XP", you'll find these digests on our website (see bottom of the digest). However, if I were you I would buy myself a CF card of 16Mb and a card reader and back up my Psion that way, better safe than sorry after 6 months !

Answer to: Jon Welford

Re. Psion now freeze - Interesting, I use Eclipse at work and home as well, and it has the additional advantage that it does not show BCC files either. I send the digest via this connection in one email message in abt. 2 minutes. Via a modem it took ov r 6 to 8 minutes. Freeserve and Compuserve still work ok as well.

Answer to: Arent Kits van Heijningen

Re. "The unthinkable... " - Well, I am totally not interested which OS my phone uses as i don't think it will make a big difference to the user. If Symbian will live on in the mobile phone sector will not help us either with new PDA's using Symbian OS, as that is as good as written off. In my humble opinion I am now using my last EPOC machine (long may it last) but I will most likely not invest any further in this system. In the unlikely event that my S7 will break down, I'll think long and hard whether or not to have it repaired (of course also depending in the cost). I think we EPOC users have no other choice but to widen our horizon and look at other machines as well. The world is developing and new machines will come out. ISP's will change their syst ms, Wifi and Bluetooth are here, in the end we will find ourselves disconnected from the worl with our EPOC systems. Sad, indeed. Maybe in the future we will have to create a new digest to stay in contact with each other.

If the new machine offers the convenient NetBook form-factor, similar battery life as well as instant on/off, while at the same time offering a far superior screen, better connectivity, greater compatibility with industry-standard memory and wireless c rds, and better document handling, I for one would take a serious look at it. The initial reviews of the NetBook Pro should be interesting.

But all this may be moot since I am not even sure whether the machine will be made available to individual purchasers.

I forgot where I got it last time, but today google guided me to

downloads.freepoc.org   .

Ian and Robert Howkins answered the same mail and informed me about a now obvious way of searching in contacts. Thank you!

[You can search in *all* fields in Contacts, using Ctrl+F (Edit - Find in All Text). I only discovered this when trying to check a phone number... ]

Hi Ulrich,

Thanks for giving me the contact to www.freepoc.org. There are several interesting programs there that have even been updated very recently, but the program "c2f109" is not mentioned on this website. A search on Tucows also gave a blank.
