Subject: VPN client?

Pardon me if I am repeating myself, but I cannot recall whether I asked this question or just thought about asking it. Is there a Virtual Private Network client that works on the netBook? I've got my WiFi working (anybody up to writing a 21st Century b ues song - MoJo to WiFi?) at home with my gateway. I would also like to be able to connect to the network and internet at school, but I need to be able to log on to a VPN before I can do anything. Is this doable on a netBook or is there some software wait ng to be ritten?  --Chris

Could anyone enlighten me (and perhaps others) about the pros and cons  and whys and hows of running Java programs on a netBook or 5mx? I know the Marcus's SMTPAuth uses Java and works great. If we have some kind of Java engine running can we use ny Java program on the netBook or does it still have to be written specifically to run on the Psion? I once was a geek, but I didn't keep up . . . .  --Chris

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it - for my purposes there's absolutely *no* current PDA on the market to replace my 5mx. So "fall short"? No. I completely agree with someone who wrote somewhere that the emphasis with current PDAs seems to be entertainment. I could care less. I get my entertainment from more interesting sources.

When you say pinched, do you mean that Apple stole the idea? I was under the impression that Xerox actually sold the idea to Apple, because they didn't think there was any money in it?!

Subject: Review of the Sony Ericsson P900

Dear all,

I guess many of us have been quite curious about the successor to the P800. Rumours have been talking about P810/P900 - now it finally is here as the P900.

Mobile Review have made one of the first reviews of the P900: http://mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-p900-en.shtml

If I were to buy a new smartphone today I would buy the P900, but as an existing P800 owner I can't justify the cost to upgrade to the new phone just to gain a few improvements, so I'll stick with my P800 for a while.

My main worry is Web.  I use my S7 extensively for surfing (I don't own a PC) and I am finding more and more sites complain I'm not using a minimum version of Internet Explorer.  I'm not a great fan of Opera's graphical interface but maybe us ng it will be the only realistic way of surfing on my S7 in a few year's time.  Web does support plug-ins but it now looks very unlikely that anyone will bother writing these to make it more compatible with many sites. <

Dear Kevin,

As a whole there are no real shortcomings in my Psion use. IMHO the applications are still superior and the OS is rock solid and flexible, which is essential to me.

However, Bluetooth would have been nice and would make the connection to my P800 easier and more convenient, but IrDA also works and does the job without any problems.

As you I also find that Web, and partly Opera, are the only applications that may encounter problems as many sites are using frames, JavaScript, Flash etc.. But then again, I don't use my Psion that much for surfing (I mainly use my PC with Opera 7.11 nd IE6.0) so it's not a big issue for me, but I understand your worry and agree with you.

Subject: netBook Docking Station

Hi All

I sold my netBook docking station some time ago for about £35. With the power problems I am currently having I could realy do with replacing it, but due to 'reduced financial circumstances' at the moment I just can't justify the money needed to buy a n w one. It would make more sense to spend more and get an mBook. Has anyone on the list got one that they are willing to sell at a reasonable price?

I am really loath to strip the netBook and let someone solder the part back on properly as if they made a mistake I would be really lost without it.

Much appreciated.

Subject: Backing up 5mx ?

Jim Thomson (No. 355) suggests using a CF card reader to back up a 5mx. I back up and convert from the Psion (PC runs WinXP) with a serial-USB cable and it's much slower than it used to be when I had Win-98 and a serial port on the PC.

How can I use a CF card reader?   Doesn't that mean I first have to transfer Psion files from C: drive to the card?     It must still use PsiWin, so why is it faster?
