Dear Alan,

AK>I do not understand when I use Email to download messages and save to

AK>my Inbox etc how it is that the emails, once read and deleted on my

AK>MalayBook, remain out there on my ISP.

When you "save" to your Inbox, did you use the Copy to Inbox or Move to Inbox option? If you use the latter you should find your mails removed from the server.

FYI, your Email on your MnetBook does not synch with your ISP; when you first retrieve mails, it display the headers of emails currently in your mailbox at your ISP, it is smart enough to know whether you have access previous mails before and will disp ay accordly, which is why you see new mails in bold font. You may then choose to copy or move your mails to your MnetBook, where Move to Inbox will remove the mail from the ISP as well. Subsequent actions on your part on your mails in your MnetBook has no effect on your mailbox with your ISP.

I personally like this setup as my MnetBook is my away machine, I can selective copy and read my mails when on the road.

Koi Hin

Dear Itamar,

IE>Microsoft - I don't like them either, but in the end I think most

IE>Companies would do the same given the chance ( and did not many try

IE>?). Another thought, why is it that no other Companies clone Apple

IE>machines ? Do they keep the OS to themselves as well ?

Its not so much Apple kept the OS to themselves as they kept the machine architecture to themselves. Apple was and remains a hardware company. Unlike the IBM PC, which in the early days endorsed an "open" architecture which enabled others to build a ma hine that is binary compatible to the IBM PCs in everyway. Hence the thousand clone makers and cheap computing power eveywhere, and ironically one of the reasons why IBM got out of the PC arena. Apple did fiddle with the clone manufacturers at various tim s in the past, but in the end they felt these wasn't growing their business except eating into it and killed it.

I actually owned 2 Apple II clones in the past, both from Asia of course and cheap (for its time!). Whether they were legal clones or not I do not recall, but one of them (called Cubic 99, which incidentally was built by the founders of Creative Techno ogies) actually added on to the basic Apple II. It features a Digital sound FX chip, and added an instruction to the runtime BASIC command which allowed your computer to "talk" to you. The speech was rudimentary at best but great fun to a 10 year old writ ng code for the first time.

Just set the phone time with (in your case) +5 more hours in "GMT setting";

And do not check Summer time auto adjustment.

Worked fine for me.

Thanks for the article! One complain, you stopped when it begins to get juicy! Tsk, Tsk, don't leave us hanging now, look forward to the next part.

Incidentally I am using a rebranded Orinoco card from Compaq, got it at a great deal. The Good: low-power comsumption, works with RFNetStat. The Bad: Blocks the Stylus! Fortunately I can live with it. I am getting very good with keyboard shortcuts, pra tically dont need the stylus unless I need to draw something.

Richard asks about the aluminum stylus for use on the netBook. Mine won't work - too big in diameter.

Itamar asks why other companies don't clone Apple machines. Apple won't let them. They did franchise an outfit some years ago to make Apples, but when they found that company undercutting their own machines in price, they cancelled the contract. IBM le anybody produce the PC - that's why it's much cheaper than the Apple ones-it's called competition.

To Chris Dickson: I guess it does depend upon which USB/Serial cable you get. I first tried a Belkin and couldn't get it to work. I then bought one from Clove They were a major supplier of things for Psions at the time) and it works perfectly.

Itamar,

The screen on the Treo is excellent for reading Word files (IMO).  It is bright and with color (and selection of large font) is actually much easier on the eyes than the 5mx or Mako.  Probably not as good as the 7 or nb of course, but I have either.  I was reading e-books on my Psion regularly.

I now prefer the Treo.

Spreadsheets are definately something else.  I tried QuickSheet for a couple of months and can only describe it as a terrible program.  Slow, clunky, and non-intuitive.  Usuable on the Dana but unusable on the Treo.

I recently moved to Documents to Go's spreadsheet.  Much much better.  Very fast (if you shut off auto-calc and refresh it when you're done entering data)., stable, and somewhat intuitive.  But absolutely no match for

Psion's Sheet.

I will be keeping my Psion's for a long time for elist maintenance using Rolf's address stripping software, and for the many spreadsheets I use daily, even if it means carrying the Treo and one of my Psions.

I _fianally_ (Oh, Glorioski) got my d----d (darned) Mako's to work.  Hard reset them - charged them overnight.  Hard reset them - charged them (again) overnight.  Hard resent them again, and now they seem to be behaving.  So I have ackup hardware for my 5mx that promises to be available when (not if) the d----d (darned) cable goes south again.

What sheet program are you working with on your Clie?

Greetings to you Alan, from the UK!

Are you using "Copy" which copies the email to your Inbox, but leaves the email on the Server? If you use "Move" then it is moved to your Inbox and deleted from the server. You can also use the <Delete> key under the Edit menu to remove any spam rom your Inbox without downloading it (but I don't know if it would have been registered as having been delivered) - useful if someone has sent you a huge attachment etc. that you don't want to download. Hope that helps. All the best,

      Kate!!

I have an ericsson MC218. Today a number of horizontal lines have greeted me and I can gain no further access to the screen.

I suspect, two years or so on, it has succumbed to the dreaded screen cable failure. Am I right?

I need to back up and access some files and recall some very kind and helpful advice how to use key commands to close down open programs and establish a remote link to my PC. Can anyone help with the relevant commands or direct me to the digest that co tained them? I need to close a word file. No other files were open the last time I used it.

The next thorny question is repair. I like the MC218 as it has a few useful extra features and want to keep it going. I am aware that if the screen is broken, I'm goosed as it is a different one to the 5MX. If the cable is the culprit, I imagine there ould be no difference between the two. Can anyone suggest a repairer?

Keep up the good work!

Recent postings have discussed use of CF card readers for backup. As at today, in the UK Dixons are selling their 'PC Line' USB 1.1 CF card reader for GBP 9.99 instead of usual GBP 14 (there's a sale in progress).

Thanks, it's a good idea. But if I'm out and about doing a lot of interviews, I prefer to have something smaller. The voice recorder is tiny, and good for 12 hours' recording at top quality or 36 hours at bog standard. My only reason for wanting to tra sfer stuff to the usb pen is as a back-up in case of disaster.

With the discontinuation of the Psion machines we cannot expect many more new software to come out if any. So the question pops up in my mind, what important (or not) software for my EPOC machine(s) did I overlook ?  So, although we covered some o this already a while back, here is a list of the third party software I use more or less regularly :

Utilities :  Menu5 - Assistant - Merlin - JB5Stopgo - nConvert - Startup -

             Crontab - CleanIt - Find - C-loader - Defrag - EpocTools -

Freecrypt - Epocsyc (not anymore) - MBMView - RMRZip -

Car :  MyCar - Routeplanner - Streetplanner

Financial :  Fincalc - abp5 - Money

Terra Force - SimCity - Poker - Psolly

Useful : Pdf - ConvertPro - safeplace - Luach - 3 dictionaries - FLWorld5 -

Subject: Pocketmail

Just took a 4000 mile wander around part of the USA. Took a laptop PC to see if it would be useful (really wasn't). I did pickup my emails while staying with a friend for a few days, but by the time I got home my Yahoo email groups had filled my mailbo and was bouncing emails. I drove my new VW Camper on this venture so stopped at many campground - state parks. They didn't have internet hookups, so didn't use. I have camping friends who swearby Pocketmail for email and the little Sharp email device. Yo dial an 800 (free) number and the Sharp Composer up/downloads email using the speaker and microphone on the device. Sort of like using the old phone couplers, but no couplers. As most campgrounds have phones, it is easy to get email daily (no surfing). P cketmail costs $15 (US) a month, a bit cheaper if you pay yearly. I don't need another device to own/carry/keep charged, but keeping in daily touch would be nice.

Question; anyone ever try, use or know how to setup a Psion (mBook) for Pocketmail? Possible?

Or has anyone been sucessful using a wi-fi card in an mBook to get their email from places like Starbucks or McDonalds. But I didn't see any Starbucks on my off Interstate drives, and the McD's I stopped at didn't have the wi-fi. Thanks, WoodyB

Hi Alan,

make sure you select 'move' your messages to inbox rather than just taking a 'copy'. But most importantly you must select 'close mailbox' for each account before dropping your connection or else any changes you have made in your mail account will not be 'saved'.
