Hello,
There have been several digests bounced back to us three or more times with the message "permanent fatal error". We have had no choice but to discontinue these subscriptions because returned digests take up alot of space in the mailbox. Hopefully, you re able to read this from another source and re-subscribe at a later time perm

Subject: Paperclips
Since buying my netBook about 6 weeks ago I have struggled to use the IR port to email via my trusty Siemens 35i and virgin.net. My 5MX has, in this past, has given sterling service all over Europe using this method and the netBook hangs have been a so rce of frustration for me (and many others). So what did I do - surf the net for a solution? Check all my settings? Reboot? Reformat? Nah ....... I did what all good software support engineers do in times of confusion and crisis ............ yes you've gu ssed it ......... I did nothing.
But I did buy a box of 100 paperclips.
Each time the netBook hung whilst emailing, I unfolded a paperclip and gave it a swift prod in the soft reset hole and then threw the clip in the bin. After
6 weeks about half the box has gone........but, but, but, ...... wonder of wonders, I have had no more hangs, just perfect comms for the last two
weeks.
I now feel that the there is some sort of problem at the ISP end of things, I have had a brand new netBook fail from the start, made no changes and now its working perfectly.
Oh, and by the way, I have 1/2 a box of paperclips free to anyone who wants them?
Kind Regards,
Malcolm

<<<< My question is, what other free UK ISPs are there which have an STD access number (i.e. one which begins 01***, rather than 08***). I think I remember Clara Net do but I don't know the number & having looked at their website, they don't seem to offer free access>>>>
On Claranet's website, go to "Services > Home Access > Free Trial" and sign up. I've just cancelled my 24/7 package with them (due to getting cable broadband) but have retained my Claranet account on p-a-y-g. London number is 020 7905 5151 and it does work with p-a-y-g.

Sorry I have so little time to write here. Please check:
http://www.clie-online.sony.net/prod_info/peg-ux50/ and http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/micros/clie/models/ux50.html
Just a few words, as you asked:
I like:
- its small size, its shape and the fact that it is not too heavy. - the keyboard with backlight so that you can type in the dark, like on a mobile phone - the screen is tiny but so clear and sharp that you can view a lot on it and it is still readable It rotates 180 deg - it has wifi, bluetooth and infrared built in so that my friend who came visit me at home could use my wifi to be connected with his ux50 - the memory stick is compatible with my Vaio laptop and Sony camera
I dislike:
- the non multitasking Palm OS
- the memory partition
- the fact that you have to purchase software in order to be able to process MSOffice documents. It comes with a reader only.
I am for the moment not really interested with
- the camera (very poor definition: 310k just good enough to take notes)
- the MP3 player
but perhaps I shall change my mind if I purchase this machine.
I did not have time to play with
- the voice recorder function
- the MP3 player
- the movie function

I have had this problem too. I read on a few newsgroups about problems with certain ISPs. I think it has been occuring since the MBlast worm went into the wild. It could be that your Psion is receiving corrupt RPC requests, which is what makes Mblast s ut Windows PC's down ;-).
Psion devices do not have RPC services running on them, but the EPOC kernel may attempt to incorrectly parse the corrupt TCP packets, causing the hang.
I think other ISP's have put filtering systems on their firewalls, preventing RPC broadcast flooding. This will reduce the occurrence of this problem but won't completely resolve it.
Here are a couple of local call rate (0845), no sign-up accounts to try. They are smaller ISPs but seem to work better than Virgin.Net: -

Here is a site that lists various pay as you go UK ISPs. I don't know how up to date it is, but it might be useful: - http://www.dailyedeals.com/free_internet/access_uk.htm
If anyone else knows of any reliable ISPs, I think it would be beneficial to all Symbian OS/EPOC/Psion users if they respond to this thread, with ISP contact or no sign-up details.

Hello Koi Hin,
I seem to remember that you are in Thailand sometimes (forgive me if I am wrong). At the Sony showroom at Emporium shopping centre (Sukhumvit), they have a demo model to try out. I was there today and checked it out. It was _very_ tempting. My wife eve told me to get it. Great screen, wider than the other Clie's and easy to read. What stopped me from buying it on the spot was no spreadsheet program installed yet, so I couldn't test that, and it is my most used program of a pda. I am a thumb typist so t e keyboard is good size, not too spread out but I imagine for touch typists it may be too small. Lots of built-in multimedia stuff, mp3, camera, and things like wi-fi, bluetooth (both can be turned off to save battery) and other things that I have no use or at the moment, but may do in the future if I buy it. Battery life may be a problem, which is another reason I am waiting- it claims 4 hours surfing by wi-fi, 8 hrs mp3 listening. An extra battery can be added but did not see how big this is. The form f ctor is marvellous, about as thin as Revo but much shorter. Best regards, Dick

The Register had a great editorial about this strategy yesyerday (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/33576.html)
and then today had some blurb on the 7700 (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/33632.html).
My hat's off to Nokia for having the balls to take on M$.

The lock-up is complete. Neither the touchscreen, nor the keyboard respond at all. All I can do to clear it is a soft reset with a paper-clip. <
Have I been more 'lucky' or did you oversee a simple switch off/ on ? While my touchscreen failed me completely and almost all keys had stopped as well, Fn + Esc did still react and I could bring my 5mxPro back to life.
Still very annoying - after three weeks of smooth connections I had thought my provider had overcome his infection (or whatever) and three days ago - failed connections, freeze ups and throw outs - #&$#%!!!

Astrid,

I am sorry to hear about your problem with PsiCards. I run Psicards on a Series 7 and have not experienced any problems with the program (over 2800 games played and increasing!). I have also run it on a Series 5 and a Series 5mx without exp riencing this problem. However, I have had the problem you have mentioned, PsiCards was not running at the time.
By the way, I have been using PsiCards longer than anybody else - I am the Author! The current version (1.92) resolves some minor bugs and may work better.
> Good thing I did because I found not only the COFFEE solitaire

By the way, version 1.92 of PsiCards has 9 games! Also, I am working on version 1.94 that makes some minor improvements and will be available for the Nokia 92xx also.
If there are any other PsiCard users out there, I would be interested in any problems you have experienced with the program as I would like to try and resolve any with this next release. Also, has anybody played more games than I have?
Regards
David Steer
