Unfortunately Microsoft changed the codes under which IM works. There has been in Psion place a discussion and there have been responses from Ruksun that are at best "non-committal" about further developing Messenger for EPOC.

The link is http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27740

For those of you that do not have web access, this is a copy of Ruksun's two messages:

Dear Simon,

Hello! Hope you are doing well. As you have correctly noted it is due to the changes in the MSN server that MSN Messenger Force is no longer connecting. We will be investigating the changes required and will make further announcements on our web-site regarding these. I would request you to keep checking our web-site periodically for the same.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused to you. Please do understand that we truly appreciate your interest in our products and it is not our intention at all to disregard your time and efforts. We are doing everything we can to resolve this issue as soon as we can. Incase you have any further concerns feel free to get back to me. Wish you a good day ahead!

Regards,

Simon,

Since we are not very sure of the effort required to get this working, I sincerely request you not to let your hopes up too high, I would be very disappointed to let you know if it does not work

Thanks again for your support, much appreciated.

Warm rgds,

-Mugdha

I am not aware of any other IM solution for EPOC. Ruksun used to carry other programs for AOL, Yahoo and ICQ. Since I do not use them, I am not aware as to whether they are still working.

Another sad EPOC / IM user.

Subject: Psiwin for Windows XP

Hi all,

Recently I put out a request for help because I could not get my PC running Windows XP to recognise my Psion 5mx.

I had a number of useful replies and eventually followed the advice of Pierre Le Corfec.

However - still no joy!

I do not like being stumped for an answer. Every challenge has a solution and sometimes the obvious solution isn't the first that we check.

So maybe, just maybe, the version of Psiwin that I am using is not, as I was told by Psion -  Psiwin 2.3.3 - needed for Windows XP.

On the disc it says: "For Windows 95/98/2000/NT" and when I run the software, it says "V1.30F" followed by "Psion Computers PLC 2000".

Is this disc version 2.3.3? If it's not and I pray it's not, has anybody got a spare copy that I could buy?

Regards,

Nicholas

Subject: Looking for Bookmarks app

Hello all,

I recently heard about an application called Bookmarks by Arnoud van der Giessen. It is a freeware bookmark utility which pops up a window with the 10 most recently used folders. However, I couldn't find a working link. Has anyone this program or a link to it?

Thanks,

Astrid

U'r right Vlad; does someone remember the name of this utility?... isn't Julian?

DOW.opo ( ?Day of the Week) shows the # of the day and # of the week for any choosen date.

Calendes.opl  by Steve Hawtin does the like and more (historical background).

This looks like a kind of overrun error to me. Go to modem preferences and set the communications handshake protocol to "Software" (XON/XOFF).

Be sure to have set the idle timeout for switch off in control panel to a value below 30 seconds (EPOC bug!)

I contacted the author, who is currently overbusy with his regular job in Symbian and will not have time to fix this small bug.

Could somebody write a macro instruction to solve this (small) problem of every psion user in the Euro zone?<<

Gianluca, why don't you try AlarmPlus in conjunction with ResetPlus? This will restore the currency as well as other Control Panel settings after a reset. Same author: http://www.mypsion.ru/alarmplus.php

Exactly my thoughts Keith.  I'll also probably get it to install the plBeam driver after reset (if the program's installed)...

Will let you know when it's done (i.e. when I get a spare 30 minutes to myself!).

Is it possible to include something to make the 4 silk screen buttons on the left of the screen reinstate as well? This is the only thing that bugs me when I use alarm plus (which was regularly until I recently tried a full optimising of my D drive which Ateliers software - it took 4 hours but transformed my machine speed wise!)

Subject: Psion Commander

Hello all,

Thought I'd give a quick heads up on the latest release from FreEPOC by new (to FreEPOC) author, Wolfgang Golder: Psion Commander.

"Psion Commander is "the swiss army knife" of all file managers. Its user interface is similar, but not identical, to the famous program Norton Commander for IBM compatible Intel/MS-DOS based personal computers.

"Psion Commander is designed mainly to support all kinds of file operations that an experienced EPOC user may want to execute during daily work with his/her computer."

Details at www.freepoc.org - and, as with everything from FreEPOC, it's free (actually, open source too).

Best regards,

Martin Guthrie

Subject: Psiwin Backup problem

I'm having problems backing up my 5mx to a Win98SE PC using psiwin2.3. After a brief while the transfer stops and I get the message ' There was a problem creating the main backup folder for the psion drive because the folder has been opened on the psion'. I've tried deleting psiwin.ini on the mx to no avail. Any clues anybody?

Thanks,

Answer to:  Arent Kits van Heijningen

>>Re. S3MX update - Why is an update of this phone more promissing ? Surely the technology and software of this Psion is by now 10 or more years old ?<<

There are several reasons :

Battery consumption : All Symbian32 phones are quite heavy on batteries if you are going to use the organiser functions intensively

The s3mx being a monochrome Symbian16 device is far more frugal in this respect

If equipped/updated with Bluetooth , OBEX , full IrDA and user-accessible flash it could make an excellent smartphone companion

Today's smartphones are more powerful than the PC's ( both Windows and Mac ) were in the years when it was the major handheld in the UK  Together with the update POS should include utilities that allow direct text/file exchange between the updated s3mx and smartphones -both the Palm-based ones as well as the Symbian32/*CE-based ones 2 There is only one version of Symbian16 (a.k.a SIBO a.k.a Epoc 16 0but now there are at least 3 different releases (ER 5.1 , ER 6 and ER 7 , not to count embedded versions ) two menu-driven (Series 60 and Series 80) - and three different graphical user interfaces ( Eikon, UIQ and  Series 90 ) of Symbian32 , with probably more to follow so the development environment is extremely stable 3 Symbian32 is a high-profile target (can I say sitting duck ?) for litigation by MicroSoft about intellectual property issues while Symbian16 is almost forgotten and unlike Symbian32  unlikely to affect MS's bottom line

If MicroSoft is attacking Symbian32 on IP issues , this means the end of the road for all non-embedded development for this platform

The basic suggestion is/was to use a s3mx as an intelligent but pocketable keyboard for the smartphone so one could comfortably type in longer texts on that and when ready transfer them to the smartphone for sending via email or MMS , so you would use your smartphone essentially for communications rather than as a PDA replacement (My personal experiences with a Nokia N-Gage have learned that a smartphone *IS* a fairly decent PDA replacement , but for the battery runtime issue , using the PDA functions heavily  cuts the runtime to less than 8 hours )

Re.: Macro for € - That should be an easy matter and I am sure someone will write it for you (I can't write macros). However, if you use Macro5 you can also easily enough record it yourself.

Answer to: Scott Lloyd

Re. Your PDA - "Your PDA is whatever works for you best" a true word I agree with 100%. This week-end I met the first potetntial client who I showed my photos on my Sony Clie. He was mighty impressed ! And I succeeded in getting Fload to work on my S7, and I am mighty impressed (thanks Astrid for the tip)<G>. It is a little bit like the Canon / Nikon argument in the photograph world. A Canon user has no good word for a Nikon camera and vice versa. It is possible to use two different PDA's at the same time if both serve a different need.

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re. New Psion Magazine - I did send in an article, but no cheque. However, do take into account there has been a postal strike in the UK for the last few weeks. He should however answer emails. Sorry, the digest has no connection with the new magazine.

Answer to: Kim Bang-Sψrensen & Malcolm J. Demanuele

Re. MSN Messenger for Epoc - Well, that is part and parcel of the problem we face with EPOC v.5. The authors will not update their software anymore and sooner or later various programs that connect to the outside world will stop functioning (web, emailing, MSN messenger, etc.). I don't think you will get an upgrade anymore. Did they promiss any upgrades or service when you bought the program or not ?

Dear Mike,

I was just reading the digest and read your posting regarding the Psion Journal.

I'm away from the office tonight so this comes from my personal email account but I wanted to get this email to you as quickly as possible!

The magazine will be out late this week /early next week, its full colour and weighs in at about 100 pages, so its a good read!

The contributions I've had have been fantastic, with articles from a team of 7 now.

The original 'as advertised' publication date was to be early October, however this first issue is running a little late! Future issues should be on time as getting the format together has taken longer than expected, now this is in place it'll make future issues a lot easier to produce.

If I didn't reply to your email I'm genuinely sorry, but I honestly can't recall receiving it.

I'm also busy trying to organise a venue for the first society meeting, a society update will follow shortly after the magazine.

There will be an official posting in the next digest with details of the now 'almost' available magazine.

Kind Regards,

Will.

Subject: New POS "Revo"

I am watching the POS front with intrerest.  It will be wonderful if an updated EPOC machine results, but even if it ends being Palm OS, it will fill an essentially unfilled nitch.  A (hopefully) affordable pocket computer with a decent (Revo/Mako) keyboard.  Now with memory, color (colour) and a decent battery system - that would be something.  But let's hope it's an EPOC machine.

And I sent in for the new Psion mag - and have (also) heard nothing. Being a small press publisher with lots of friends who are also small press publishers, I have not bothered to email.  Many a slip twixt the plan and its execution.

I'm backing to using my Mako - Eleanor's 5mx had a cable pack-up and it has to go back to Psion USA.  I moved out of mine into the Mako and moved her into my 5mx.  That POS machine is sounding attractive - hope they do better with the hardware.
