Subject: Re: POP3 email
Dear Tom,
If I have understood your problem right, I guess it must be a well known problem.
In Account settings:
- The pop3 server for Incoming email should be where your email-account is. So don´t change this !
- The smtp server for Outgoing email should fit your internet-connection (not neccesery where your email-account is). Change that every time you use a new connection (provider) !
I found out last summer on a music course with a free internet-room. All where sitting with there personal laptops pluged in with netcables, surfing and reading email. But nobody could send email. One of the last days, a kind
person told them what to write in, as smtp server. ;>)
If you use the same internet provider at home as for your mobil phone, you don´t have to change the settings every day. Some of the small mobil phone providers uses same net and settings (even gprs) as the big (and sometimes expensive) ones with landline, so you can be lucky ...
Hope it helps ...

Subject: Relatabase
Hi All
Gianluca Gallino asked about Relatabase. I must admit that I don't actually use it as I have Powerbase, but the idea seemed a good one and I knew that it would eventually come in useful for someone. I think that I can answer the questions nonetheless, although I am writing this quickly before I nip out to catch a plane to Fair Isle, so it will be brief. My netBook is in my luggage so I can't refer to it.

Yes, exactly that. The record to which you would want all of the employees of that company "linked".

Yes, this looks like it would work. I don't tend to use Data because I have Powerbase(!), but you could sort by a particular field if you wanted, but your way seems OK.
Glad to be finally answering a question instead of just asking them!

Jim,
>>> <<The current Palm OS is not multitasking, when you move from one program to another that programs state is saved to memory which means when you return to (for example) word the document will be exactly where you left it!>>
I'm not sure if this is a function of the Palm OS or rather a convention that the Palm OS supports.
...
It's like it is programmer's choice rather than a function of Palm OS. <<<
It is, and this applies equally to EPOC. By convention, when a menu item is selected in an EPOC (OPL or C) application, when Menu is pressed again, the menu will open with the same item selected as was last used. However, at least under OPL, this is not how menus work by default; the programmer has to modify the menu call for this to work. ie: m%=menu will open the menu with the first item of the first menu selected, while m%=menu(menu%) will open the menu with the last used item selected.
This is a trivial example, but it does demonstrate that most of these *requirements* are standards, which need to be implemented (or not, on some cases) by the programmer.
Cheers, Ian.

That's possible!
>I do know I can click on the Agenda file in the Documents folder on the flash and access Agenda on the card, but I want to access the valid agenda from the silkscreen icon.
Agenda is a "file based" application. This means, you can even open more than one file (like in Word or Sheet). Tapping the silk screen icon cycles between the open files. If Agenda is not running and you tap the icon, the file most recently opened will be opened again.
Contacts has an option to move the file to a different drive, but it will always stay in a folder
?:\System\data and be named contacts.cdb. The latter is hardcoded.
Before you switch cards you should close all apps with open files on that card to avoid crashes or corrupted files.
Have you considered using EpocSync to keep copies of the files on each machine? (Serves as a
backup, too!)

Hi Sergio,
>Do you know if is it possible to print with a USB printer with netbook! >I have a serial->USB cable and i' like to buy a a Mini Canon printe to print my photo
That won't work for different reasons:
1) USB is a master-slave protocol. A serial/USB converter needs a PC (or Mac) as a master, a printer will always act as a slave which cannot control the converter (nor does it provide power to it).
2) Color printers depend havily on the driver software, especially when dealing with photos. Even if you can make one of the current models work with your netBook, the quality of the photos will surely disappoint you.

Subject: Re: OPXs & SIS-files
Answer to: Stephane Sage
Subject: RE: OPXs & SIS-files
>>Still I don't quite get why KMLinkWin program was under "sis" if it wasn't meant to be installed on a Psion...<<
Let's see if I can explain this in a reasonably easy to understand way. SIS is a Symbian OS (formerly known as EPOC) installation format. Apart from installing Psion applications, SIS-files are also used to install applications in things like Sony-Ericsson P800, Nokia 9210 and Siemens SX1s who all run later versions of the Symbian OS.
The root cause to your problems is that all OPXs are specifically compiled for the device they run on, or more accurately, its CPU and chipset. Psion S5mx/Revo and S7/netBook are based on the ARM7 and StrongARM 1100 respectively, and those two are *bit compatible* so the same OPX can run on both. A PC, however, is based on the Intel 86 CPUs. A Nokia 9210 is based on the ARM9 Thumb CPU, which, despite its name, is *not bit compatible* with the ARM7.
It is a bit like in the early days of railways when different countries had different distance between tracks or 'railroad gauge' to use the prevalent term. OPXs are like the wheelpairs and the OPL application is like the train. If a wheelpair is applied to a different guage than what it was designed for, the train will derail. Therefore, often when crossing borders in the old days the train would have to change its bogeys, but you did not need to change the whole train. An OPX compiled for an ARM7 will instantly derail if run on a Intel -86, e.g. a Pentium. The same happens if you run an OPX compiled for an Intel -86 on an ARM7 (which is what you did when you installed the KMlinkWin on a Psion 5mx). For this reason, there need to be different OPXs for ARM7 and StrongARM Psions (e.g. 5mx and netBook) and for Intel -86 (e.g. Psion emulator) even though the Symbian OS version is exactly the same. If I recall correctly, originally the Orient Express had to change bogeys three times betwee n London and Istanbul. Similarly, if you want to run a simple OPL application using the CONTACT.OPX (this OPX makes it possible for OPL to access the Contacts application) in a Psion 5mx, in a PC emulator and in a Nokia 9210, you will need three different OPXs.
>>>Another thing, while we are at it: could someone briefly explain what are the respective roles of OPX, OPL, SYSRAM, SYSTINFO and the like?<<<
Since Symbian decided to open source it, OPL stands for Open Programming Language. It is simply an application development tool, like Java if you will. OPXs are libraries of extensions to OPL, similar to DLLs in a PC. As the names imply, SYSRAM and SYSTINFO are OPXs which add capabilities to OPL in the area of accessing system information and managing system events.
>>>And why there were a few "unclosable" OPL standing in the running Apps window together with, say, Agenda or Data ?<<<
This one I do not understand. Are those appearing when you run KMlink or what? How do they appear?
Kind regards

In Contacts, go to Menu - Tools - Preferences and chose D: as the Disk for contacts store on both machines. I'm not sure what'll happen if there's already a Contacts file on D when you do this. Maybe you'll have to do the machine with the oldest version of the file first, then delete the file, move the card to the updated machine and do it again. After that, it should work fine on both machines.
Agenda, like many EPOC programs will start up with the last file it had open, so the Agenda file can be kept anywhere you like. The only thing you have to remember is that if you launch Agenda on either machine without the disk in the drive, it'll create a new empty file on C:. If the NetBook has a "Today" screen under System like the Revos, you can go to Menu- Preferences and tell it which is your default Agenda file.
> Has anyone had problems, mechanical or other, from
> using drive D for primary data storage.
I've been doing so for years with no problems. I keep everything I can on D to leave as much working memory as possible on C. The only thing I don't keep on D is the Mail folder. I don't know about the netBooks, but keeping the Mail folder on D on a 5ive can land you in big trouble if the battery runs down while you're downloading your e-mail.
The problem is that the Psion uses a lot of power when the IR or RS232 port is active, and writing to CF also uses a lot of power. If the battery level drops too low for writing to CF while you're halfway through downloading e-mails, your mail Index file as well as whatever e-mail it was saving at the time will become corrupted. This happened to me a couple of times until I realised what was happening and moved the folder back to C.
You will problaly have to copy the up to date Mail folder to the D: drive before moving the CF and then copy it from the CD back to C on the other machine. If the netBook doesn't have the problem with the power dropping too low for writing to the CF, you might be able to use Email with the folder on D on the netBook and only copy it back and forth on the mx.
You should be able to install any software you want to use on both computers on D, except for those programs that come in different flavour for the netBook and 5mx. Install those on C on either machine, or on E: on the netBook.

I'd very much like to get this information as well, so unless anyone has strong objections, I suggest keeping it on the list. After all, it seems a large percentage of us Psioneers are travellers of some sort.
What I have been told is that there is no such thing as a mobile phone network that covers the whole USA, but I hope this is wrong. I have this information from European yachts that have cruised the intracoastal waterway where you cross several state borders.

Well, it is not ONLY Psion that have battery problems. Just read in the Times in the UK this morning that Apple have a problem with their iPod that holds 10,000 songs that the battery life is only 18 months. In the beginning they advised users to throw it away at the end of the battery life which created an uproar in the USA (see http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com). Now they changed policy and users can either extend the warranty for $ 59.- or order a battery replacement for $ 99.-. At least they saw their mistake and addresses the matter.

Re. Batches of answers - It will be hard for the operators to split your messages in batches. We typically download all messages and have the digest program run over the complete batch of messages. We would have to stop in the middle, reset and start again and keep your messages without deleting them with the other messages. Furthermore, it would create difficulties when switching operators. Could you please try and batch the messages yourself ? Thanks in advance.

There's no such thing as _sending_ POP3 email. POP3 is a protocol for _receiving_ e-mail.
The protocol for sending e-mail from the EPOC Email program is SMTP. Most SMTP servers won't allow you to send e-mails unless you are actually connected to the Internet Service Provider the SMTP server belongs to. You need to open Menu-Tools-Account settings in Email for your account and change the SMTP server under "Outgoing". SMTP servers don't give a hoot what you put in Email address under "Account", so you can still send (or receive) from any account you like whichever ISP you connect to.
