Subject: GPRS aircard/netbook
Hello All!
I've been checking the digest out for some time now, hoping to hear some news about the GPRS aircard (T-Mobile in the US NEW YORK region) being used with the netbook (even an older netbook version).
Has anyone been using this service? And If so,
How well does it actually work?
Can I continue sending and receiving faxes an emails with no problems?
Is it worth getting this aircard or can I just use a newer phone that's GPRS enable with the IR port?
Will this IR port work with the 5mx as well? and If so,
Is the speed the same as using an aircard?
I know I'm hitting ya hard with allot of questions, but I am thinking of upgrading from my reliable I888 Ericsson World Phone that connects flawlessly to all units via IR Port and has so for many years now. (want better speed)
Any feedback is appreciated, Donald em

Dear Melvin,
MW>Am I right in thinking the cable is necessary to connect to my desktop? I could use the IR to coordinate with my Mako and my laptop, but for day to day purposes, I would need to move files back and forth to my desktop. Is the cable involved peculiar to the Netbook -- or might I find something that would do the job at Radio Shack or the like?*
I would advise it as the cable is non-standard, IR does not work off-the-shelf with certain Windows OS versions, and cable would have a much more reliable connection (from personal experiences).
MW>If I have to buy the RS232 cable from Sita, I'll be charged a minimum shipping fee of $23. At that rate, I could have them add a Cisco Wireless card for $45 and save $15 of the $60 the seller of the Mbook is asking -- and add in a screen protector and ,perhaps, a CF card of some appropriate size.
I personally prefer the Orinoco Wi-Fi cards, less power consumption and works well. You dont have to get a CF card from them, CF cards are widely available and is one of the cheapest memory per megabyte.
MW>Finally, is there an archive of Epoc Digests?
http://www.psioneering.co.uk/
To the moderators of Epoc Digest: May i suggest you tack on the URL for the Epoc digest at the end, as I am sure this question comes up every now and then. I further suggest some very useful URLs on various aspects of our machines be posted there, such as Wi-Fi, CF compatibility or others, as the questions relating to them pop up quite frequently. Perhaps even an FAQ. Actually PDAstreet's Psion forum probably does a better job at this and is more newbie friendly, but I suspect many digestees are too busy (or lazy like myself) or have other difficulties that prevent them from keeping up with the postings there and rely on the digest.
Warm regards,
Koi Hin

2) Color printers depend havily on the driver software, especially when dealing with photos. Even if you can make one of the current models work with your netBook, the quality of the photos will surely disappoint you.
Right!
Another question!
Beetwen Canon and HP witch potable printer (latest model) work with netBook!

Re. SitaShop - Did not disappear at all, logged on in one try.

Re. Malaybook Accessories - The RS-232 cable is the standard one that works for the 5MX, Revo, S7 and netBook (as well as the 3C and 3MX). You should be able to pick it up either on eBay or one of the many postal order Companies like Clove and Widget.
Re. Archive of digests - Yes, the archive is on our website which is at the bottom of each digest : http://www.psioneering.co.uk

Subject: Sita / n-Dream / mBook
Hi All
It is guaranteed that as soon as you point out that something has disappeared it immediately comes back - Sitashop - !
n-Dream, or the lack of it, is causing me spam headaches too. After months of not even opening the mails I had a change of mind and decided to see what was on offer. I tried out a few packages to add a few extra inches and it works, honestly. My nose is now so long I can use it as a scarf!
I still think that the best antispam measure is to keep changing your email address. My address must be on one of the CDs twice as I get every wonderful offer twice. If everyone changed their email address say, four times per year, the ISPs might start to do something about the spam situation. They may of course just charge you for changing your email address so often!
Melvin told us all about his Ebay win of an MBook.
You can connect to the desktop by IR, but a cable or docking station is more reliable. Look at somewhere like www.serialleads.co.uk for a PsiWin cable.
You will need at least one compact flash for the OS. If you should have a complete power failure (both main and backup batteries) the operating system will be lost. The OS can be downloaded from several places on the net - just google for MalayBook OS.
PDF reader is freeware - just google for it. Someone here will be able to help you out with Opera and probably PDF reader too.
The MalayBook can be awkward about what CF it will load the OS from, mine took 3 different cards before I got a successful install. It finally worked from an "Integral" 512mb CF. It has to be said that it is rare for the MBooks to lose their OS' and it is usually down to lack of care of the battery levels from the user, or an intentional upgrade to memory or personality module.
Look at prices on www.expansys.com on the CF card front as well as Ebay, although a lot of the ones on Ebay may not come from the same country in which you live so importation duties might become an issue.
The Epoc Digest is at http://www.psioneering.co.uk/
There is actually very little indeed to be gained by buying a netBook personality module. If the netBook OS is ever upgraded it would be worth having bought one. This is about as likely as a jackpot win on the national lottery (or less). Its easier to see the install of the OS procedure going on if you have the netBook personality chip. You are at the moment less likely to be able to run Linux on a netBook than an MBook.

Subject: Communicating with USB Port
This is still as a result of my ongoing communication problem that I am yet to solve. Can anyone tell me how I get my Revo connected up to a USB port and if this is easy to do? If it is, it may be an option to solve this problem in a roundabout way and at least end up with possibly a faster connection. I know you can buy COM serial > USB converters, but they are quite expensive so I don't want to go an buy one if this is something is hard to do or may just not work bearing in mind the ongoing communication problem.
I have tried deleting PSI win stuff from the registry and also renaming the stuff under "Psion" in the registry so that it creates that again, but I still don't get asked for the name of the Psion etc. as I do the very first time I installed it. IO am still totally baffled.
I wonder of the £1 per minute UK tech support telephone line will be of any use? Anyone had cause to try this?

Sita Shop has not disappeared. They were redesigning their Web site. I found them again about 21 hours ago. (11:00 p.m. EST in the U.S. on Jan. 13th. I used sitashop.com in the URL. Keep trying. It didn't work one or two times -- but I may have made an error on those occasions.

It's a good thing people like Scott Loyd are helping out (he solved my power supply problem for me). I finally got tired of waiting and contacted Expansis (I ordered December 23rd). They tell me that all is ok and that I should expect to see my power supply around January 20th. I knew it was a far piece between the UK and the US, but I had no idea....

Subject: PsiWin connection alternatives
As I've poked about trying to find where and how to connect my Malaybook to my desk top, I've found cables at reasonable prices at expansys -- and also some IR sensors to connect to the USB port. The cheapest wouldn't cost all that much more than a cable. Has anyone any experience with these? Wouldn't that be a simple, even portable way to make that connection and transfer files?
Might file transfer also be managed by using a CF card reader?
Would that turn a CF card into something like a Zip Drive disk? (My
experience with CF cards is limited to using them with my digital camera.

They've been known to be down for considerable periods of time before...
That's one of the reasons I stopped using them.
(The other was that harebrained 'verify sender' crap they started to
use)
> Also, any ideas on a possible replacement?
I now use www.spamache.com
It costs about $7/month, but for that it cleans out 98% of the crap,
including their own replies to support questions and the mails from the
credit-card company they use for billing...
The server is responsive, can be accessed with my netBook/Opera, stores
deleted mails for 30 days, and is located in Denmark(no need to worry
that the FBI or CIA have access :-)
You will need to make a 'white-list' or else this digest and lots of
other legit mail will be blocked.
And lastly, they have a 7 day free trial.

Subject: PHONEMAN
Hi all,
I have read various postings regarding using 'Phoneman' with the Nokia 6310i phone.
I never registered my copy of Phoneman because I was unable to transfer multiple numbers for an entry on my previous phone which was a 7110 to my S5.
My mobile is used as my business address book so I decided to try again last weekend, after downloading various add-ons from the Zenobyte site. After 1 false start have succeeded in synchronising a total of nearly 200 entries a lot of which have multiple numbers & address details. My false start involved reading only the first number and / or part of the address details and I was not aware of it stopping after 31 entries.
I look forward to using this program and intend registering once the new version becomes available.

Subject: UK Power Supply for Netbok
I'm offered a UK power supply with the Netbook (MBook) I just bought on ebay - in addition to the US power supply included in the price. I don't spend enough time in the UK itself to make it worth while. But it it could also be used elsewhere in Europe (Germany, Greece, France) and in South Africa, it would be worth buying. Is the UK power supply usable in the rest of Europe, with suitable plug end adapters?
