Dear Vlad,

<< The destiny of the Psion is SO damn' silly... If I was a millionaire I would buy the production line and wouldn't care if it made a profit or not >>

When you're thinking of reviving the production of the Series 5mx or the Revo you're going to be disappointed. They weren't manufactured by Psion itself but by third-parties. The Series 5mx, for example, was manufacturer by the Singapore company of Flextronics. You therefore can't buy the production line as Flextronics will be using it for other products. Still, you could buy the rights to the Series 5mx from Psion Plc. and have it produced by Flextronics again.

I can't supply you with modem settings for these Nokias are there are simply too many different models under the 6xxx/7xxx umbrella. Give me the exact model number and I can help you further.

Hi All

Whilst I appreciate the help on CronTab, with the suggestion of silent alarms, I find it hard to believe that someone hasn't written something like CronTab that works. Am I alone on this list in wanting to run applications such as backups when I know that the Psion will not be in use and to save me having to remember to do it manually, i.e. in the middle of the night? Is it really monstrously difficult to awaken a slumbering Psion and have it do something, and then go back into its sleep?

> You have the option to get Internet via the cable TV operator or DSL

Not necessarily. I can only get cable access - I'm 0.3 mile too far to get DSL. Many people down the road in San Jose can get neither cable nor DSL - the city and the cable company still arguing about a franchise - and this is in Silicon Valley!

Not true - I get very little spam. My cable company is Comcast and you can go to your account on their web site and check a box which will filter much spam. I also use MailWasher as a filter.

Answer to Axel Moberg

> Can netBooks be found anywhere at all? And, the crucial question, can the version with Scandinavian keys be found anywhere? If not a dealer, does anyone know about a good place to find them second hand? <

Dear Axel,

You can find the netBook at Sitashop in Malaysia -

http://www.sitashop.com/psion/ and also at http://www.pulster.de/ but the latter is a German version.

The netBook was shipped in a Nordic model like the Series 5/mx with Scandinavian keys and was distributed by Psion Teklogix Denmark in Denmark and SIE in Sweden. It will be hard if not impossible to acquire one as the production of these stopped long time ago.

Please contact product manager Christian Hallberg at maybe he can help you in some way. Also you may visit their web-site: http://www.sie.com/sweden/mobdat/Index.htm

If you can't find any Nordic netBook you can easily use the UK netBook. My Series 7 is the UK one without the Scandinavian keys, but I've just made my own hotkeys in Macro5 to produce æ, ø and å. You can do the same or maybe use Remapper.

Tcr seems pretty dead these days.  Simon Quinn's eBook reader is now free,

and is said to handle Tcr, so grab a copy of that.  But you can afford the

space to have two readers.  I'd look at Mobipocket, since they have the

same format on Psion, Palm, and Windows.  I've been reading the free ebook

from the Baen site in .prc format for Palm (and the hardcover of the most

recent Honor Harrington included a CD with about 35 ebooks in multiple

formats, including the entire HH series).  Wouldn't go near any Microsoft

format like .lit, because the next thing you know it is extended and

locked.  I have a bit of a discussion of some ebook issues on

the HTML file without the subfolders with buttons etc. When I ran out of

space on the floppy, I attempted to delete the unwanted subfolders, but

this also deleted the HTML file! Another example of M$ user friendliness!

When you have an HTML email open on an Internet Cafe machine, how about

using Ctrl A to select all the text,

Ctrl C to copy it to the clipboard.  Then open Notepad, and Ctrl V paste

the email into it.  Keep doing that with all your email. Notepad has the

great advantage that it saves as plain ASCII.  Of course, if your email

includes giant attachments that doesn't help.  My general observation

however is that if an email contains HTML, it is probably spam, or near

spam.  I think life is a lot easier if as much of your computing data as

possible is in plain text, whether on a PC or on a Psion.  I'm not sure why

Psion insisted in doing their own email format, but I think they got it wrong.

One of the gadgets I'm about to get is an Addonics 18 in 1 multifunction

recorder.  This is a portable, removeable rechargeable battery and mains

powered DVD player/CD burner with a USB interface.  It can be used as a DVD

to TV player, or as a CD or MP3 player, or as an external DVD/CD.  Although

I'm getting it for use with a digital camera on long field trips, the

interesting part to me as a Psion owner is the camera card reader built

into it.  It will accept any of about 8 different camera cards, including

all the Compact Flash ones.  Further, it will burn them onto a CD for you,

without any computer.  It doesn't care if the card comes from a camera or

not.  I see it as instant backups of my Psion when I'm well away from a

computer.  I also imagine it will play MP3 a lot better than a Psion :-)

I'm thinking more and more of looking at dedicated devices reducing my use

of a Windows computer.  Hence the above gadget.

This approach probably isn't as cheap as a computer, but the frustration

and annoyance level looks a lot lower.  Just a matter of seeing whether the

Psion can take on all the "computer" tasks for which I can't find a

dedicated device.

far this has worked on 100% of the previously unconvertible HTML files that

I've tried :).

This is monumentally weird when you consider that current web standards say

that <HTML> should be <html>.

Further, to be valid, a file should start with a DTD, and that comes before

the <html> tag.  Sounds like a bit of an nConvert update would be in order.

Well, maybe not.  Does anyone know whether nConvert comes with a

recogniser?  The recogniser may be the problem.

I know email addresses are not in the archives but they used to be, which brought about the debate initially months ago. My comment was suggesting using the simple encryption method I suggested for emails. This would make too much work for a subscribing spammer to decrypt every address. It would also make email addresses available to all digest members, but only when they really wanted to email a member directly.

I personally have no problem with spammers getting my email address. I get hundreds of spam emails per day, which are filtered out before I open my mail application. Most of which are due to my email address being on web sites or being entered as subscription / verification forms.

I doubt I will aquire spam from this mailing list.

I've tried using the base href tag, and it seems to me to be too broken to be of any earthly use (this conclusion also reflects the opinions of some HTML book authors).  If you don't have a realtime connection to the web, you can't even test  your web pages locally once you use the base href tag.

Your css drops out.  I'm sorry.  Until browsers get their act together, I'm not touching base href.  I do however include Eric Meyer's id signatures idea as <body id="ericlindsay-com"> so that at least you can find the URL by inspecting the page source.

That is determined by the starting day of the week (which by default is Monday, which was in 2003).  In Control Panel, International, change the starting day of the week to Thursday (in 2004), and Agenda will change the week notation.

However, your weekly view in Agenda will also start on Thursday.  I think Psion got it right.

Subject: Power/Backlight

Hi Folks,

My 5mx has developed what seems to be a rather funny problem.

I use it mostly at home on the external power supply using a POD Docking Station, power supplied through the Honda connector. I use the backlight at home most of the time too. In Macro5 the backlight is ON under external power, ditto Merlin with the timeout set to maximum.

With the power LED (left-hand side of the keyboard) on the backlight occasionally switches off and on erratically. According to the System screen (Information, Battery, Shift-Ctrl-P) this happens, LED still on, apparently with external power and without. This problem is intermittent (translation: bl**dy frustrating).

I should emphasise that the power supply is plugged in, switched on and the LED lit throughout.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm running StickyKeys and Robin Hood's Task Manager as well as Merlin and Macro5, though I rather doubt anything other than Merlin and Macro5 address the backlight.

Answer to:  Rolf Brunsting

Re.: Apple iPod battery problem - I think that when a group of users see the battery problem as a "problem" and open websites to describe the "problem" as well as pressure Apple to do something about it, there is a "problem". I was further not comparing this situation to the particular Revo "battery problem" which was not classified by some as a "problem" either, but in general a comparison with Psion as a Company that never confirmed any "problem" that existed with their machines (screen cable ....). Lastly, while a producer IMHO does not have to take into account any possible usage of their equipment, a heavy use or "high intensity use" should certainly be on their minds as well and be checked and tested.

Re. Digest policy - Well, the final sanction we have against anyone advertising unwantedly is not publishing their messages. Each operator has a quick glance over the text file to make sure all is in order before sending it out and could easily spot certain typical messages and delete them from the digest. Until now we did not have any hard advertising that made this necessary.

Ray,

My advice is this:

Do not attempt to "restore" the backup of the 5mx to the Revo, but hard-reset the Revo, close all apps and copy only the files and applications you need. For instance, documents, spreadsheets, agenda files etc.

Replacing the system\data\contacts.cdb and system\apps\contacts\contacts.ini with the backup should migrate your contacts.

Finally, Install any Apps you need, and you should be back in business.

I did this when my 5mx broke and used my wife's Revo until I bought a new 5mx.

Subject: Moshe's English Dictionaries

Hi Moshe,

I just downloaded "Little Sense" from a site that said it was free. It linked to PsionPlace for download and the download is the shareware version I expected. I thought the 'free' statement was wrong.

The Memoware site has "WordNet 1.6" in TR format and "Little Sense" appears to be based on the same version of "WordNet", but edited down. Certainly I wouldn't use "Little Sense" in preference though it is less than 1 megabyte and "WordNet" is nearer 6 megabytes. But the TR file is freeware (though you need TomeRaider which is not free).

If Anthony Ellis, the author of "Little Sense", cannot be reached (and I assume he can't) perhaps a Macro5 hotkey, a HotKeys hotkey or a Merlin toolbar button would make the TR "WordNet" work the way you want (and there are many other possibly suitable ways to go).

I've got to be honest though, I've got *many* paper dictionaries including the enormous 2-volume "Shorter Oxford Dictionary on Historical Principles" and a few volumes by the brothers Fowler as well as one by Ronnie Barker! I can easily understand why a Psion-based dictionary would be desirable for many but I prefer my paper ones. If I need to carry one I carry the "Pocket Oxford" or very small "Collins Gem" but there is a similar sized Oxford too (among others).

Happy days,

Phil.

Reply to Stephen Stone re Revo Loose Keys and Battery Charge Fix:

I recently experienced the equivalent of an "extra hard" reset: My Revo

started literally screaming -- the sound went berserk, and I could only

stop the truly dreadful wailing noise with a soft reset; this did not cure

the problem -- nor did a hard re-set, for each time I turned on the

machine, it started screaming again. So I shut off the sound and let the

battery die, and left it alone on my desk for several months. I had planned

to send it to be serviced and repaired, but things got too busy over the

holidays, and I simply forgot about it. Meanwhile I was using my 5 mx.

Suddenly that died, and I decided to see if the Revo might work; I had

rather recently backed up everything to the Series 7, and poured my filed

into the Revo via Infrared. It is now working flawlessly (though I'm afraid

of it, and do not go to a concert, for instance, with the Revo, in fear it

might suddenly give voice during a pianissimo passage....). Furthermore,

the battery charge works better than it ever has.

Chris I did not suggest using a fixed number as the seed, you did!  Call RANDOMIZE with a time related seed, as all have used so far.  Then use the result as the new seed when calling RANDOMIZE a second time.

This will make it _more_ random as initially required.

I can't vouch for it's efficiency in OPL, but it worked for me about 25 years ago, when I first used this trick.

I think my 5mx died from an electric shock, delivered when, after I put on

thin nylon shoulder bag on one of these dry, cold days when everything

crackles and sparks like crazy. I'm now using my Revo (while 5 mx is left

battery-less for some days to allow it to recover, I hope)  & trying not to

touch it without touching something else first to discharge the

mini-lightning bolt. Is there any anti-static material that is light weight

that might be available in a zipper case that will shield a Psion or Revo

or small digital camera ? In principle, I'd like to carry it in my inner

jacket pocket, against my chest,, so it won't freeze in 7- degree

Fahrenheit temperatures w. high winds.... but I'm afraid of the static

electricity & presently am keeping it in the shoulder bag between heavy

layers of cardboard. Not ideal.... & I suspect a similar zapping effect

could wipe out my digital camera... I've asked about anti-static cases in a

couple of camera stores (& of course places like Staples or CompUSA have no

clue)  to no avail. Any & all suggestions much appreciated, Thanks in

I enjoyed your essay, Rolf, but I would amend the above statement you made to 'Microsoft aims to keep its users ... by' locking alternatives out of the market.

Subject: Communication problem saga continues

Having now installed my serial to USB adaptor, I get exactly the same problem that the revo switches on so is connected by there is no communication.  I think there must be something that is blocking communication, but I haven't a clue as to what.

I guess the only thing left now is to see if Psion technical support at £1 a minute can help - although I'll probably spend £10 just explaining the problem!!
