Re: Vodafone in nB? (Jack)

>>>Did any of the dear old psion fellows succeed in using a

Vodafone GPRS (air)card in a (even old) nB?<<<

Ciao Jack,

I have been successfully using a GPRS vodafone connect card in my netBook

for 4 months now. it is actually a rebranded Option Globetrotter and I am

using it with "ispwriter.opo", which I downloaded from PT site.

I am quite happy about the thing with a few exceptions:

1) GPRS signal must be stable and strong to allow for connecting with the

nB... my T68i happen to succeed whereas the VCC fails. Option sells an external

antenna but I have not considered it yet.

2) the rate of successful SMS sending via phoneman pro is about 50% (I believe

there is something which I am not doing very properly)

3) until now I could not either send/receive faxes or make a voice call

despite using what seemed a compatible earplug with microphone.

Just in case you are evaluating the purchase (or getting it with your vodafone

fidelity points, which is actually what I did), bear in mind that we are

on the eve of a launch of a couple of new products:

the option globetrotter combo (gprs+wlan)

the vodafone UMTS connect card

If on one hand the two above-mentioned products may not necessairily work

on the nB, there are reasons to believe that the standard price of a V.C.C.

/ O.G. may fall in the near future...

HTH

cheers

gianluca

PS: a good piece of advice for me was also the article called "Wirelessly

>>>Wireless Option on Series 7 in Epoc Word format can be download at the

That is what I have set up with Key Mapper on my Revo and 5mx. I fact, as I bought the 5mx to replace a dying MC218, I have moved the keys from the MC218 over and thanks to Key Mapper, I am using the MC218 keyboard layout on my 5mx.

With Key Mapper, it is possible to create just about any keyboard layout you like. However, I have come to the conclusion that if you try to have the Norwegian characters (Æ,Ø,Å) on direct key presses without the use of Fn and Fn+Shift combinations, you'll run out of keys for the rest of the alphabet. It takes a little getting used to, but I find that pressing Fn+j for "æ" on my Revo has become second nature and doesn't hamper my typing speed.

Of course you already have your Swedish ä and ö available on the keyboard by pressing Fn+z followed by a or o, but pressing Fn+j,k and l (for example) without having to follow it by a second keystroke would be faster.

There's nothing about macros in any Psion or MC218 manual. The Macro5 macro language (an extension to the OPL programming language) was created by Nicolas Pascal and is to me one of the most important software developments for the EPOC Operating System. To use macros, you need a macro launcher.  The original one was Macro5, which AFAIK is the only one that allows you to record keystrokes to create your own macros. My favourite macro launcher is Merlin, but I would suggest starting off with Macro5 and then trying out the others once you've become more confident.

As an ertra function seperate from the macros, Macro5 also lets you redefine your keyboard. However, this isn't its primary function, and in my opinion, Key Mapper does a much better job.

There is one small caveat which you have to beware of if you redifine your keyboard. If you have redifined the unshifted values of some of your keys and chosen to use your alternate layout on startup, you may find it impossible to enter your password, and the only way to regain access to your Psion may be a hard reset!

I remember long ago that someone had come up with a way of circumventing the password by installing something on the D: (CF) drive and I also remember that someone had come up with a way of preventing this from happening. I can't remember the details though.

If the keys are otherwise identical, you migh be able to simply swap them around and redefine with Key Mapper. If youn do, don't use Y or Z in your password!

Subject: 3rd pin

Antony,

>Some countries have 3 pin plugs and others 2. What would the 3rd pin connect to? If nothing, then why force countries to change their sockets for a 3rd pin that isn't used.

I can explain what the matter is here in Germany (and I suppose in other European countries as well).

The third plug is called "Schutzkontakt" (protective ground). It is connected to the outer casing of any appliance. This pin is mandatory for devices which are not completely insulated, i. e. don't

have a plastic housing without metal parts that can be touched be the user.

In older houses with only two leads per socket, the third pin is directly wired to neutral. That must be done in the socket. When the appliance has a short circuit of live against a metal part of the case, this leads to a short circuit live/neutral which blows the fuse directly.

In newer houses, the three wires (live, neutral, ground) are wired to the central fuse box. Each fuse

(actually interruptor of 16A) is wired to a group of rooms or a single room (kitchen, bathroom), sometimes even a single socket (e. g. the washing machine). The ground wires can be wired directly

to neutral or to a special protective circuit, called "FI-Schutz" (FI = "Fehlerstrom", erronous current(?)). This interruptor cuts of the supply if any voltage is detected between neutral and ground. The current

to trigger this is only a few mA. When an appliance has a short cuircuit between live and protective

ground, a current flows through the FI switch which triggers. Since the trigger current is so low, this

even works if the short cuircit is not direct but via some conductive bridge (humidity). This is the

reason why the latter can be found in the suppliy for the kitchen and the bathroom.

Hi All!

I just tried to tell Andy Hayes about another time-logging-software which I use since I had my first Psion 3a ...Log-It!

Unfortunately the web-site where it used to be available www.pelicansoft.com is now some kind of "telling-the-future-by-interpreting-the-bible-and-by-the-way-the-end-of-days -is-coming"-site

Does anybody know, if LogIt is available somewhere else?

Thanks

AVG free is good as it allows what you gently did via its "Email scanner" / uncheck both "certify".

Nevertheless, as Rick and Philip confirmed, Email2 liberates psionners from viruses, worms and may  be horses.

Subject: CronTab, Macro5 and Pascal Nicolas

Hi Folks,

I have tried the few addresses for (a few) Pascal Nicolas' excluding the obvious and so far have drawn a blank. But I live in hope.

The EPOC 32 world owes this man a great debt, as the EPOC 16 (SIBO) world owes Tom Dolbylin a great debt (I think he pioneered macros on our PDAs). He seems incommunicado too. But both he and Pascal Nicolas released their Macro systems as freeware. Both he and Pascal Nicolas effectively perfected their macro systems before they effectively disappeared.

In this respect the difference is that EPOC 32 has progressed beyond the facilities Pascal Nicolas provided for. If Chris releases a 'patched' version of CronTab but acknowledges, as he has has here (and loudly here too), that the program originated with Pascal Nicolas then I really don't see a problem. If FreEPOC are amenable *under_these_circumstances* then surely there can be no problem there unless (and until) Pascal Nicolas asks them to stop.

But Pascal Nicolas has been so extraordinarily generous to us that I rather doubt he will stop being so now, and especially if he knows how worried about it some people have been (and rightly so). Maybe even a new version of Macro5 will result!

The true value of honesty is the generosity that is the greatest part of it. And it promotes such honesty and generosity in abundance too.

Happy days,

Phil.
