Subject: Thought for the day

Lately there have been a few remarks about some people adding "thoughts for the day" at the end of their messages.

This matter was discussed some time ago in the digest and the general consensus was that people do like (or don't mind) these additions. The operators try to filter out any unnecessary footers (virus messages, automatic long disclaimers, etc.) but will leave the thoughts for the day in the digest.

If you don't like these, we request you kindly just to skip reading them and allow others to enjoy them.

Subject: CronTab fix good news

Hello everyone,

Rather than delay my CronTab fix a long time (to work-around an EPOC SIS bug, so that uninstallation of it removes the patch), I am releasing it now as-is:

http://cshandley.web.users.btopenworld.com/CronTabFix.zip

The reason is that delaying it much more would probably make it superflous, since Pascal has agreed to let someone else take-over the source code - and so most likely my fix will be officially incorporated sooner or later.  I won't say anymore, since I've already stolen some of their surprise!

BTW, my fix is simple & appears to work, but I do not use CronTab so it is possible (but unlikely) that there will be problems.  If you find any, please report them to me or the Digest.

Regards,

Chris Handley

My reason for doing this is to highlight some really good apps of the past, many of which I have registered, that might be useful to EPOC users of the present. I will produce a Data file if there is enough interest. <

You can add EBook and PhonemanPro

But I don't see much reason in such a database. What is the difference between a shareware/ commercial program that has become freeware and an app that has been freeware all the time? It would be more interesting to have a list of applications that have (almost) vanished and a way to resurrect them or the info that that was it so you don't have to google for ages...

And now I've mentioned it: anyone an idea where to find the language files for Ottfried Cheong's freeware DIC ?

Cheers,

Subject: fonts on s5 classic

When I had an s5 classic (with ER1 no less, not even er3!) I

successfully used Alexander Zavorine's fonts.

http://geocities.com/zavorine/epoc/fontstore.htm Not an easy solution

but it did work - here's an ancient screenshot

http://www.simonchadwick.net/screenshot.gif just to prove it. I used

the "load custom EPOC font dynamically" method by modifying the OPL on

Zavorine's website, and installed Andrew Johnson's printer driver to

allow display and printing of the new fonts

http://www.aps.anl.gov/~anj/bjc80/

Whether that would instantly add the Euro symbol € to the ctrl 128

position or even to fn e, who knows?

Simon

PS anyone tell me what to type in html to get € to appear on a web

page? At present I just write "Euro 2.99". Also what happens if I put

in code for €and a viewer's computer is too old to manage it?

Not necessarily so. I image Psion still owns the basic stuff to to its ER5 machines. Is there anything to stop Psion going the same way as Apple - changing the system but keeping/updating the same user interface.

Developing in telephony is what put an end to ER5. If Psion is returning to PDA's, this can only be good news for us. Psion haven't done PDA's in three years - since the Revo.

I wouldn't know how to write a macro.

Could you kindly give me a template macro for date entry?

Hi Itamar,

just a little correction:

Assistant's command window will be opened by the System hotkey "Assistant". You can set it in Menu/Hotkeys/System hotkeys…" as you like. Obviously Marcus set it to Fn+n.

I'm aware that this may be a problem. I took it for granted that an experienced programmer like Chris would have the good sense to put the version that wasn't in use somewhere out of the way, like in a subfolder.

No, they shouldn't, because when there are identical files present on more than one drive, the one on C takes precedence over any files on D, E or Z. That's why the OS can be patched by putting a fixed version of a file that exists on the the Z drive on C, D or E.

However, I think that making a backup from C to a CF drive by copying the folders to the same folder structure is a bad idea. Far better to put the files and folders from C into a subfolder, for example named "Backup", or in the case of keeping several generations of the backup, why not just give the folders the date as a folder name?

I normally back up the C drive to a zip file on D called D:/Backup/C.zip

Navigator is installed on D, so there would be no problem unpacking the file if C crashes. (Touch wood.)

Subject: Revo won't switch on

Hello Psion World,

my wife's Revo won't switch on. As my wife says she forgot to charge it and now when I try to charge it, only the green light goes on. Well, the red one goes on too, but only for a few seconds. There seems to be no way to switch it on.

I even tried to soft reset it, but nothing happened. It was the same when I tried hard reset. It doesn't even beep, the beast.

My wife says she hasn't dropped it or, at least, she is not aware of dropping the machine.

I wonder if it is only a battery problem or if something, like the motherboard, has kissed us goodbye.

Thanks for your comments.

Not that 'Grazie' Daniele as Opera is a cross platform program and other OSs have the slash the other way round.

Answer to: Andy Hayes

Re.: database of applications - Sure, please do that, it sounds a great idea. When you are finished others could add programs you did not enter to make the database even more complete. Alternatively you could ask people to send you their entries, but it would probably mean receiving a lot of double entries to sort through.

Answer to: Marcus von Cube

Re. Recording Macros with Assistant - Thanks for the answer. I suddenly realise it is not in the main menu of Assistant but in the functions after you call up the list of macros (never noticed it there).

Answer to: Woody B, Jack (& others who answered off digest)

Re. mBook - Thanks for the link and details. I have now 2 CF-cards with the OS.img file as well as the contents of the C disk. I don't feel like trying it out, will wait until something does go wrong, as anyhow I make regular back-ups. On my S7 I actually NEVER had to a hard reset.

Re. Opera - Thanks for the idea Jack, however I hardly ever use a web browser on my Psions and don't feel like fiddling around with these programs.

RE

3 or 4 Date-time stampers macros could be found on Pascal N. pages (Thanks forever Pascal!)

One among them beeing MLDstamp by Marc Jeitz; nice opo for "letterheading"; it only needs Macro5 Libs (no launcher) to be implemented.

Unlike Merlin; Assistant and ExAb...  *have*  incorporated date clippers.

One can still use the date  and time functions from Sheet cells which can be pasted elsewhere.

Subject: Palmlink v.90 Modem, different handys

Can I connect to the Internet via a Palmlink V.90 Modem, and what cables / adapter do I need ?

--

The Palmlink V.90 modem worked really well until it recently died. Here are the settings I used:

PDA EPOC Palmlink v90 modem

Modem

Name            Palmlink v90

Speed           115200 baud

Connect via   Serial

Fax class      Auto

Options

Loudspeaker in use   Never

Volume                    medium

Pause time for","      4 seconds

Initialisation

Init. (reset) string    ATZ

Data init. string       empty

Fax init. string        empty

Advanced

Flow control        Hardware

Terminal detect   not checked

Carrier detect      not checked

Modem type        Fixed Line

You'll need three small adapters between the modem and the serial cable to the Psion:

Palmlink V.90 ---> GENDER CHANGER --> NULL MODEM --> GENDER CHANGER --> serial cable --> Psion
