It's generally a good idea not to fight XP, it knows what it's doing... :)
There is no need to rename My Documents, the different users folders are quite separate and named differently, e.g. under C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\My Documents. The fact that you see a folder "My Docs" and so does your better half doesn't imply a conflict, just that you are seeing a view of a different folder.
You can't just rename My Documents - if you right-click on it and look at Properties you will see where it resides, changing its name will not affect this.
For backups, basically backing up the Docs and Settings folder or user subfolders will get most of what you need. You should still be able to see each other's Documents in Explorer if the are not marked Private (e.g. as "Alan's Documents").

PS Quote from His Eminence Martin (February 2003) :
" Replacement Colour Icon for Tomeraider
Replacing the icon for Tomeraider is just slightly more complicated than normal applications. This because Palm-tec/Proporta upgraded the application to v2.x and changed the file format it handled - but left hooks in place to handle Tomeraider v1.x files (I think). The upshot being that there are two 'Tomeraiders' installed on your machine:- 'Tomeraider' itself and 'TR2'. Of these, it's the TR2.aif file that needs replacing to create a colour icon on your Extras bar - and that's what's enclosed here.
NB: don't delete any of the 'Tomeraider' app stuff on your machine - you still need it.

Well, as I said, I think this is a function of Psion not really expecting the machines to be used as fully standalone computers. Actually, I suppose we should be glad of the limitations because if the Email application had been a bit more advanced, SaveMail and REM would probably never have been written, and the combination of these two applications have made it more versatile than most other e-mail applications.
> and possibly HTML email.
No thanks! HTML email is an abomination. Supposedly, it allows users to format the text, but the _ONLY_ e-mails I've ever received where there has been any attempt of formatting is Spam, usually advertizing porn sites. In all other cases, the only thing that happens is that I have to pay cell phone charges to receive the same text twice. I still remember Bill Gates announcing that HTML would be the new e-mail format for the world, and I thought: who the hell gave him the right to decide?
> I also find the connectivity settings annoying.
I remember a macro (or maybe it was an application) which ran on the 5ive Classic and could easily change the Internet and e-mail settings chosing between several sets of settings. I expect there is probably a version for the 5mx too. Anyone know? (I only use one e-mail address these days.)

I think you're expexting too much out of a mobile device. However, if you create one subfolder for each e-mail address and keep the Inbox empty, you can select and copy all the e-mails wholesale into the appropriate folder after they've beed downloaded.

I use a Merlin button to select all (Ctrl+a) and move them to the inbox (Shift+Ctrl+i). I agree that it would have been nice to be able to just log on, get everything and log off again, but then every now and then there's a virus or a large attachment on the server and I'm very glad that I see the header and can skip it or delete it before I download the other e-mails.

One thing you shouldn't do is give the simulator access to the backup folders in such a way that the System folders of the backup become \System on the simulator. If you do that, the applications that are installed on the Psion become installed on the Simulator, and as they are not WINS versions, they can cause havoc. Far better to give the simulator access to the backup folders one level lower.

Din Psion develop CE.NET for the Netbook Pro hardware, or did Microbloat do it for them?

And then you go home and back it up to your PC? The one thing all the EPOC Psions miss is easy access to mass storage without the use of another computer. This would have been reasonably easy to acheive if the CF port supported using external devices. If the CF port had been able to work with the door open, I'm sure someone would have brought out an interface for connecting stuff like external harddrives or even CD-roms and CD burners. The interface could be made with a CF slot so the Psion could access the external drive and the CF at the same time. It would still be possible, but users would have to modify their Psion by cutting a hole in the CF door for the cable and many people would not be willing to do that, so sales would be too low for it to be an econimically viable product.
> AFAIR you use it mostly as "standalone" as well ?
Yes, but with a PC for taking backups. I don't do that all that often now, as the things that change are EpocSynced several times a week between my 5mx and Rako, so I should be able to get things working again if one machine crashes by restoring the backup and then running EPOCsync to the other Psion.

Hi Owen (and other folk),
You said:
"So, if you don't use the (eMail) address and all you receive on it is viruses, why bother checking it at all? Just let it sit there and fill up. Sooner or later it'll start returning "over quota" and maybe you'll then be able to persuade the ISP to delete it when it's taking up a few mb or space on their server."
Unfortunately my ISP *won't* close this account. It usually takes less than an hour to go "over quota" so I usually don't bother with it. Steve Litchfield had a similar problem (but worse) and now uses a different eAddress.
As far as my ISP is concerned this is not their problem despite the virus eMails coming mostly from their own infected customers (other ISPs have had the same problem). Also my ISP will only send customers eMail to their *original* eAddress - even eMails saying the mailbox they're sending it to is full.
It's a Windoze virus - ergo I haven't been infected. So it's obviously my fault!
When I subscribed to n-Dream those da**ed eMails weren't blocked even with every option chosen and only eMails specifically for me referred back to the (non-existent) sender. But if I want a clean(ish - ISP generated spam is sent to primary mailboxes) mailbox I will have to open a completely new ISP account.
Happy days,
Phil.

I use a belt case which came with a Garmin GPS48. It fits my Rako perfectly. The GPS45 used the same case. The difference is that on the case that came with the 48, the Garmin logo is sewed on so it can be removed. On the Garmin 45 case, the logo is printed on. I suppose having a Garmin logo on the case wouldn't be a huge problem... Maybe a non-Revo/Mako owner on the digest has a dead Garmin GPS and is willing to donate the belt pouch to Mike?
PS. a reasonably new dead Garmin should be sent to Garmin, as a corpse and a moderate amount of money will buy you a brand new GPS. My Garmin 48 is with Garmin UK right now being replaced with a brand new Garmin 76. The charge (repair fee) is £62 +VAT (if applicable).
You might also have a look at Lowepro camera pouches. The AW range have a built in rain coat hidden in the back, and they are well padded. I've got one for one of my cameras and am very happy with it. Best of all, they're well made and cheaper than much of the competition

??? In what way? It's certainly able to keep up with my 9600baud GSM connection as well as my reasonably fast typing. When I used Outlook over the mobile a long time ago, it usually took around one minute to establish contact with the POP3 server. Email normally takes around 30 seconds from the call is initiated until the headers start coming through.
> it's too easy to overload and corrupt its
> indexes,
Has happened to me maybe three times in six years, and two of those were caused by keeping the Mail folders on the CF drive whilst using NiMH cells, which. As far as I remember, Psion specifically advice against using rechargeables. Many of us use rechargeables and are happy doing so, but we know that one of the limitations is that if you use rechargeables, you shouldn't keep your Mail folders on the CF. Outlook crashed on my mother's PC and she lost a couple of months worth of e-mails. Won't happen to me (famous last words) as I have them in SaveMail Data files.
> no multi-account checking,
You can check several accounts and you can have several POP3 mailboxes open in the same session. You can even send e-mails with different "from" addresses in the same session. What more do you want? What you can't do is automagically sort the inbound mail to different folders or tell it to download all mail on all servers without further user interaction.
> no ability to download automatically,
For which I am very grateful. I would be in deep shit if the Psion always grabbed everything in my mailbox without giving me the option to choose. In fact, there's a 450kb e-mail sitting in my mailbox right now, and I'm letting it sit there until I have a chance to get to an Internet café to download it.
If I open the mail server and when the headers come through, I want to download everything there, I hit a Merlin toolbar button which selects all the headers and moves them to the Inbox. A button in Email for this function would be useful, but the Merlin toolbar behaves almost like an integrated part of the application anyway. It wouldn't be any problem doing the same with Macro5 or any other task launcher.
> no filtering,
I don't really miss it. I use SaveMail to sort my inbound e-mais into diffrent EPOC Data files.
> no sigs,
REM will give you all the sigs you need. When I write a "new" e-mail rather than replying to one I've received, I insert the sig as a clip text item from Merlin.
> no decent address book with groups

Easy to solve with a macro if you want it. I haven't bothered. I use two-button reading instead. (Fn+down)
> no redirection
Aren't you expecting a bit much out of a pocket device?
> no decent headers
I'm not with you. If what you're missing is the ability to look at the header of inbound crap, you can find them in the logs if you've set up the log folders.
> It's usable, and has so few features it's not
> susceptible to viruses, but compared with a

I'm not in pain at all, except some times a touch of writers cramp...
I agree that the Email application has its limitations, but most, if not all are easily overcome by using free tools (Merllin isn't free, but you can use Macro5 instead).
I've been using the EPOC Email application for all my e-mails for years and this is in fact the most important use of my Psions. This is one of the reasons I've never seriously considered changing platforms. I don't believe there is any other handheld past or present that would give me the same versatility as I get with the EPOC Email application in combination with REM and SaveMail.
When the day comes that my last Psion dies and I don't have a replacement, it's good to know that I have all my e-mails from the past 5-6 years in EPOC Data files so I can export to text (in the WINS simulator if necessary) and read them on any platform.

I've had a similar problem with at least one 5ive Classic and a MC218. It was caused by faulty soldering on the little switch underneath the keyboard. The machine would switch itself off whilst I was typing and switch itself on when it wasn't in use. The only solution, until I had the time to open the machine and resolder the switch was to disable automatic on/off on opening and closing the case.

Re.: Psion emailing - Thanks for the answer. HTML messages there is no solution (personally I much prefer plain text, but that's personal ...) but the other "problems" you mention can be solved. I also use my Psion at home (either MochaPPP or wireless), work (MochaPPP) and on the road (mobile phone, modem card). I use three network settings (Compuserve outside the UK, Freeserve in the UK, and ADSL eclipse at home/work).
SMTP server : I use Merlin to put a toolbar in the email program. On the toolbar I have 3 options for each of the above networks. Each choice has got a small macro behind it going to the network to be used and set that one as the default mailbox. Accordingly it is a one press solution. You can of course do the same with the other similar programs that allow for shortcuts.
Multiple in-folders: Most email programs on a PC don't have this either. However, instead of just moving emails, use Ctrl-C or Ctrl-X, go to the folder you want the emails to appear in and do Ctrl-V. Again, a small macro behind a shortcut will do it with "one touch" again.
Downloading : I don't understand your point about downloading headers first which takes more time. With the Psion you can either choose which ones to download while on-line or download them all (Ctrl-A and "move").

I believe it arrived in the UK in late June 1997. They were very difficult to obtain at first, so much so that I even considered getting a 4Mb model as these were easier to get hold of! Naturally most people waited just a bit longer for the 8Mb model to become more available. I eventually got mine in October of that year. Do you have the latest OS.img? If not get it from Psion teklogix.
There is a TCPIP update which I think has been applied to the latest os image, but if not, you could install it. It too is on the tecklogix site in the NetPad section
If your machine consistantly freezes at the same point, it may be a java applet, javascript or a CGI script on the server that can not handle your browser type. I'd suggest viewing the HTML source using another tool such as a Windows PC. You can even install the same version of opera (for windows) on this. See if there are applets or javascripts running or see if the form action is to a cgi script. The problem is; Should you encounter one of these, the best you can do is report it to the webmaster and hope it gets fixed.

The My Documents folder is part of the users profile. A profile is a group of directories, documents and settings (.ini and registry hive) that make a users logon have unique characteristics. By default, every profile has a My documents folder as well as many others. With XP, the 'My Documents' is a shortcut typically to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents. When a user logs off, their profile is saved and when they logon, retrieved. In situations where profiles are stored on servers, profiles are cached locally for performance reasons. When a profile is loaded, Xp performs integrity checks on the profile to ensure it is not corrupt. One of the integrity check may be the My documents folders existence. If it is not there, it may be created at logon time. You should therefore have 2 folders. My Documents and Carol's Documents, but where the My documents shortcurt would point to would be unclear and therefore not relied upon, so I suggest you check the users Documents and Settings subfolders.

This is why I suggested the Nokia communicator. It is by no means a small phone and if folded out to contain simply a keyboard rather than screen and keyboard could have a large enough keyboard for most uses.

Actually, the browser and email components have been separated out into separate projects, so it's now possible to download only the email client (which is called Thunderbird) and/or the browser (called Firebird).

IE was originally based on Spyglass' Mosaic browser, while Mozilla is based on Netscape's "Gecko" rendering engine, which was first introduced in Netscape 6. Note also that Netscape 6 was a total rewrite, so it actually has no connection to earlier versions of Netscape other than look&feel and the fact it came from the same company. (This may also be part of why Netscape lost the browser wars, and was ultimately bought by AOL - the rewrite took far too long, so users abandoned Netscape in favour of IE as Netscape 5 looked increasingly dated, feature-wise.)

Subject: OT: Windoze executable
Hi Folks,
I received an eMail today from li.garland_yz (at) arturipr.co.uk asking me if I sent a file final.txt.scr (22016 bytes, I think). It is a Windoze executable and I don't have a Windoze machine, though I wouldn't run it anyway. This (and the fact that I haven't sent anything to that address) makes me suspect that the file may harbour a virus.
I am loth to ignore this eMail. The sender may be legit. and honestly worried. But replying may validate *my* eAddress for all sorts of nasties. If my eAddress is being used to distribute nasties I want it stopped. I know my ISP will say (if asked) that it's not their place to even help, it's entirely my own responsibility and fault if someone is using my eAddress and/or their services (!). This has always been their response.
Has anyone any advice beyond simply ignoring this eMail?
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Nbook switch off/on
To Itamar
Have been away, so please forgive this late contribution.
I reported similar problems with my Nbook some months ago.
I do not use it for alarms, nor do I have CronTab.
I thought I had solved battery drainage problems (caused by 'phantom' switchings on) by not selecting 'Switch on when case is opened' (to prevent accidental switch on caused by vibration), by selecting 'Switch off when case closed', but by switching off physically anyway (the switch seems to work but have used Fn Off as well).
All seemed well, but after leaving the Nbook in an office drawer over Christmas, I returned to find it totally drained and needing, therefore, a full reboot. I am at a complete loss to explain this occurrence, but it does leave me with the thrill of the unknown every time I open the Nbook!

There's a small review in the Guardian today of the Nokia 9500.
Keyboard, Symbian OS, WiFi, it looks very promising?!

I have noticed that both under Java Psion Link and during IR transfer that Psion dictionary/thesaurus files cause the link to drop. .sis files on the other hand cause no problem.
