Subject: TCP/IP MaylayBook

Some kind soul (thank you - I lost your name) sent me the update zip for the TCP/IP fix (to stop hangups in email) and the Web Browser for the MaylayBook.

I'm trying to upgrade the TCP/IP to stop the lockups and what happens is:

1.  I moved the TCPIP_UP.SIS file into System/Install.

2. I click on it and receive:.

"About to Install: Comms Component (TCP/IP) 2.01

3. I hit OK, then receive:

"Get Information: In Use"

and it drops out.

What am I doing wrong?

Second question.  My intent once I have this TCP/IP problem solved (one thing at a time), I plan to load up Web into the MaylayBook.  When I do so, it is my plan to move my Opera folder onto the D drive, renaming it and some files in the folder (just in case), and then install Web onto C drive.  Once I have Web up and running, I will move Opera onto my Dell in case I want to go back to Opera anytime in the future.  Is my plan sound?

And thank you all who responded to the switching £ to $.  Simple and obvious once it's pointed out.  But lots of things "I don't know" are like

that.

TIA,

My experience with XP is very limited as I only go up to 2000 at the

moment. I do have enough xperience to add a couple of points to this

thread.

You can change the location pointed to by 'My Documents' by

right-clicking and changing the target. This allows you to move it

wherever you like. In my case, the D: partition for user data.

This may have changed with XP but backups with Windows have never been particularly straightforward in my experience (I've avoided that awful

pun this time). Windows tends to be very sloppy about where user data

is stored in that while most documents are located in users' areas,

other files such as mail (Outlook Express), Schedule data (Outlook)

and Favorites tend to congregate under the user profile somewhere like

C:\WINNT\Profiles\shodgson\appdata. Then there is all that useful user

data stored in the registry...

Of course Epoc adopts a similar strategy but the pain of a backup is

considerably less due to the smaller file sizes, neater system and

backup type.

This is one of the reasons I tend towards *nix world such as OS X or

FreeBSD where generally settings are text based and stored more

logically under each users' home folder.

I have 3 different mailboxes I check regularly, and the only problem I have is when I forget to set the 'from' address with [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[A] and a mail is sent with a more 'embarrassing' addy...

I second that.

I have a 230KB mail waiting for me which I'll probably download at the office, even though I have a 'slightly' faster connection(GPRS) than Owen...

(It's a list of magazines for sale which is sent about once a month. Yes I also collect magazines :-)

I haven't really tried the keyboard on a 9210 as no one trusts me for long enough... (They know I'd swipe it if I got half a chance) so I can only speak with any accuracy about the 9000 which I have managed to get hold of...

Yes, that's a virus, or rather, it's a worm.

The problem is that the worm, when spreading, fakes the 'from' address to stop being detected and neutralised.

What to do depends on the format of the mail you got.

If it looks like it was an automatically generated message, you can either delete it and forget, or you could email support or abuse at the ISP and complain about their annoying anti-virus software.

If the message seems like it was written by a person, it should be OK to explain it to him, and possibly tell him to invest in a decent anti-virus package which would have told him what the file was....

You may even ask him if he saved the header of the mail to help tracking the worm back to the infected machine...

(You'll find his IP address at the moment he sent it, and possibly a login-name if he's on dial-up.)

It may be that you might recognise the owner of the infected machine as it must be someone you've once had email contact with.

And a unusually appropriate one it is too. I know we swore we would move away from TFTD but it seemed that Owen has genrated just the right random number for today. Readers of New Scientist magazine in the UK may already be aware of some new research that has just suggested that this is in fact the case. Apparently the risk is associated with one particular activity but I won't go down into too much detail for fear of giving offence.

Anyway as we are probably geekier that the average population we should also be less at risk!

Subject: Psion sale of Symbian

I came home tonight to find that, as a Psion shareholder (don't laugh) I get a vote on whether I agree that they should dispose of their interest in Symbian.

Best point was the idea that this would maximise return on investment! Basically I bought shares more for sentimental reasons than anything else although I was hopeful at the time and I knew they could go down. I've seen the monetary value plummet over the last few years which is disappointing but not too earth shattering. More significant is that my attachment to the brand has also evaporated with he more from consumer PDAs, the move to CE.Net and now (at least barring a miracle) the move to be just a hardware house.

I was looking at a demo of a rugged CE.Net handheld by Dolch today. This is clearly the sort of product that will be going head to head with Teklogix and was clearly an attractive piece of chunky kit. The Windows OS felt completely uninspiring in use though, particularly compared to EPOC and PalmOS. I do appreciate that they are aimed at a different user base but I would have expected something better from such a pricey piece of kit.

Off to mull over how to vote...

Cheers,

Steve

Hi, I am new here, please refrain from flaming me till I know the ropes:-)

I have just bought a netbook, drool drool. I am off to Denmark soon and I need to get wireless networking going, I have bought an orinoco silver 5V 16Bit pcmcia card from someone in the USA. It

has a FCCID of IMRWLPCE2411R which google gives me as all of

the good lucent chipset cards. I am not having a great deal of fun connecting to my Adaptec Ultra wireless point yet, have any of you had similar fun with similar kit or am I just dim?

I have made sure that all the IP addresses and subnet masks are correct, I am a little unsure of the different settings for the netbook. All help gratefully accepted.

Thank you.

Reply to: Philip S. Adkins Potter

Dear Philip,

>>I am loth to ignore this eMail. The sender may be legit. and honestly worried. But replying may validate *my* eAddress for all sorts of nasties. If my eAddress is being used to distribute nasties I want it stopped. I know my ISP will say (if asked) that it's not their place to even help, it's entirely my own responsibility and fault if someone is using my eAddress and/or their services (!). This has always been their response.

My suggestion is to ignore the mail. A genuine individual would take non-reply as negative. However should you still wish to contact said person, you could always do so from a webmail address that is *Not* your primary email address.

Recent digests have seen a lot of posts on spamming. I am fortunately not plagued by the same problem, or at least not to the degree that some have reported. In my daily mails, easily less than 1% is spam, on most days, I receive maybe 1 unsolicited email. (Which comes in through my company email address) This has not always been so, until the recent year.

My method may not be palatable to most people. I actually have several email accounts. I have 2 work emails, 2 webmails (from Yahoo and Hotmail respectively) and 3 personal non web-based email accounts. I surf the WWW alot and frequently sign up for various websites etc. I typically use my webmail accounts for those. Both Yahoo and Hotmail have filtering for junkmail and you can set to exclusive, where only known addresses can get to you. I adopt different settings on each but as an example say you set to exclusive on Hotmail, should you sign up for a particular site, frequently an automated mail is sent to you. Should the mail contain information you require, you can always see it in the junk mail folder, which is only flushed every week or so. If you expect to receive further mail from this address simply add it to your address book.

The bulk of my mail comes in from my work emails and personal emails (these tend to be the more important ones), since I almost never use them for web-surfing, I receive very little spam over the years from them. The exception ironically is my work email and there is not much I can do about that (apart from complain to the sysadmin) and even that has dropped tremendously. What these actually means is that mails that I would have a chance of downloading to my MnetBook is remarkably free of spam, exactly the way I want it as my MnetBook is my away machine and the less unwanted mails, the better. Coupled with the fact that I only download mails that I want I never get to see any mails that I dont want to, including some mails from pesky bosses.

I notice that many a times an unsolicited mail that I do receive gives you choice of opting out of the mailings. Which I always do. This helps to reduce further spam as well. Spam while generally unwelcome is not always bad. Its good to know once in a while that you can actually be of service to certain individuals in third-world countries and make a little money on the side, or that there is help available should you feel yourself inadequate in certain areas. ;)

Warm regards,

Koi Hin

I've never had this problem with my 7 but it often happens with the nB.  It's unlikely that ChaDis is causing the battery run down.

I suspect a problem with the power on/off switch.  Maybe while the lid is being closed, the switch touches and switches the nB back on again.  Or even while closed, vibration may trip the switch.

I use ChaDis on my 5mx, 7, nB and Revo+ (different versions) and I've had no problems over all the years.  In fact I install two apps on every new EPOC Psion.  They are ChaDis and Macro5.

Re.: Psion as a standalone computer - Yes, I do back-up the Psion to  PC, but when traveling I easily enough back up the internal drive to the D drive CF-card and carry a spare CF-card with the details of the CD card I use on it. With the S7 and nB / mB you can easily do it without a PC when you buy a CF-card adaptor for the E slot and copy from CF-card to CF-card. Anyhow, the chances that both the internal drive and CF-card will fail together are remote, or not ? I have got DATA on the internal drive and programs on the CF-card, together with some backed up data and just data in storage (databases) so I don't write much to the CF-card.

Re. Mailboxes - Well, services like Spamache really do work. I subscribed and they now clean up two mailboxes I use every 10 minutes of SPAM messages and I only get one occasionally now, probably when I open my mailbox betwee those 10 minutes. It really is a delight to sometimes ahve an empty mailbox again <G>.

Re.: Saving emails - WOW !!  You keep ALL your emails from the last 6 years ?  How many bytes of files that is ? Personally I keep very few emails, only ones with vital information or details I need to keep.

Re. On/Off problem - Interestingly enough after a soft reset the other day suddenly everything is behaving, the mBook switches off the first time I try and the battery keeps it charge while the mBook is closed. No idea what caused it and can't be sure it will not suddenly start again either.

Answer to: Philip S. Adkins Potter

Re.: OT: Windoze executable - i am afraid you will not be able to do much about it. Your eAddress most probably is present in the address book of someone else who has got a virus on his/her machine. It will send out virus emails from their machine with your address as the sender. You could try and search in the header whether you can find the email address from the person with the virus or their ISP (if it is unique to them or you recognise it). It happened to me as well but than I suppose the person did find out (s)he  had a virus and it stopped again.

Re.: Nbook switch off/on - If you want to stop this "thrill" you could of course leave it connected to the mains when leaving it alone for longer than a day or so.

Re.: Nokia 9500 - I typed in Nokia 9500 in Yahoo and got to the www.forum.nokia.com. It looks like a noce machine, integral camera as well, colour display 640x200 pixels, it has got MMS, SMIL, instant messaging and email. Connectivity options include EDGE and WLAN, bluetooth wireless technology, USB 2.0 and infrared. Among the security features are SSL/TLS, VPN, IPv6 and IPsec (don't know what they all mean <G>), file encryption and MultiMedia Card software locks. It has got Opera 6.x for browser, it's size is 148x56x23.6 mm and it weighs 222 grams. It says to contain WORD, EXCEL and Powerpoint compatibillity. It has got a handsfree speaker too. It has got video and imae viewers (MPEG-4, 3GPP, RealMedia formats). It is also a triband device.

Well girls and guys, this looks like quite a machine, properly updated to the latest technology and ... still with Symbian OS. Any takers ?
