Subject: Re: Wiped Out?
I lost track of my Diamond Mako for a couple of days. When I found it in the ppocket of a sport coat today, the memory was down to 0 and all the data seemed to have been wiped out. Something similar happened a couple of weeks ago. In that case, after a bit of fiddling, suddenly it "found" all the files aand data I thought I had lost. So far, I haven't been able to make that happen again this time. Might it still be in there somewhere, or does dropping to 0 typically wipe out everything? I.e., should I simply restore from my PC, thereby losing everything since a bacthe 1st of January?

Subject: Batch mode for web-browser
Since I have not yet been able to get Web to connect to the Internet under the emulator, the tricks I used with Web on my Series 7 no longer work when I am using a notebook.
I want to minimize my online time (yes, I still use dial-up) by batch downloading URLs. In other words, I'd like to specify a list of URLs, download those as quickly as possible, and then get off the phone. Mozilla doesn't seem to offer anything in this regard, and Internet Explorer offers something similar to batch mode called "Synchronizing" which is slow as molassas.
Is anybody familiar with a good tool that will me do
fast, text-only "batch downloads" under WinXP?

Fellow Psionistas:
As an avid user of the C64 during my younger years, I started searching for emulators, driven by nostalgia. I just discovered an emulator for both the 5mx and a color one for the 7/mnetbook/Netbook.
Anybody having any experience usieng them. I have been on a long trip and tried installing the emulators, but it refuses to load any of my small selections of disk images.

As a regular ebook reader (daily!) and ocassional programmer, I'd be
interested in doing this. The author (Greg Graham) doesn't seem to give
any contact details and I ought to get in touch with him before using
his code (not to mention Simon Quinn...). Was there an article to go
with this link - or do you have further details? May be best to contact
me off list.

Subject: Re: wireless netbook/mbook question
I think I've figured out my inability to connect my mbook/Cisco wifi card to my Apple Airport base station. The Cisco rLan configuration expects the internet to be on all the time (ethernet/DSL/cable set up) whereas my Airport base station uses dial up. I can get the Mbook wireless to work at Starbuck's for instance, but not at home. So, the bottom line is the Cisco configuration doesn't let me set anything to tell the Airport station to first communicate with my Mbook and then start the dial up. Any suggestions? TG

Hi Itamar
I did not mention Webtools and its included Mswitch v1.01, because there is a more recent and quicker modems switcher macro = MSwitchv1.05.opo; it allows up to 8 different modems & is available on request. I can't remember whom it came from.... anybody knowing?

I use a USA/Serial cable I bought from Clove which works just fine with XP and my MnetBook.

I'd keep the cable, get a USB/Serial cable, *and* get a CF card reader. The card reader is an easy, very fast way to backup your CF card to your PC. PsiWin is very slow in comparison.
Sorry I can't help you with FTP - don't know much about it.

Try:
http://www.portal-pda.com/shop.html
or:
http://www.pulster.de/index.htm?d__netbnetz__Netzteil_Netbook261.htm
29 EUR for a screencable (it seems to be the special model, better than the Psion original).
The site is in German, scroll down until you see the cable. "Bestellen" means "order". I think the owner is reading the Digest, so he might help anyway :-)

To answer your last question first - when last I looked they were sitting at about £1. I need about £3.30 to break even. I can't quite
see teklogix doing that for me but here's hoping. It was this loss I
was referring to rather than anything to do specifically with Symbian.
The sell-out will reduce Psion losses as they are getting a good
return on the money they put into Symbian as one of the founding fathers. I only really question whether now is the best time to
pull-out but I guess it might be, before Symbian OS is too much of a commodity, and one they have lost almost all control of.

You said "My AntiVirus program caught it straight away - why doesn't yours?".
Is there an antivirus program for EPOC? : • )
I don't use a Windoze machine at the moment. This eMail was downloaded and deleted on my 5mx. I rarely use my Mac for eMail.
I'll send this person an eMail from my Yahoo account. Thak you all for your help.

Sorry to hear.
> Can I get a replacement ribbon anywhere? The psion repair centre charges are out of this world. <
You can either order just a cable or send your Psion out for repair. The cable (improved build without holes) can be obtained from
www.ka-flex.de 32,50 € + p&p (rebate if you take three)
www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html 35 € + p&p
www.pulster.de 39 € no p&p for Digest members (out of memory)
I don't know whether Christoph Pulster offers repairs as well. ka-flex takes 69 € for cable+repair and another 7 € if you want an enlargement of the cable-compartment. Six month guarantee on repairs. SRS take 80 € (out of memory) for cable+repair.
Customers living outside Germany have to pay in advance. Never heard a negative report on either of the three.
Hope that helps,
Astrid

Re.: Email speed - I don't know which Psion you use, but my mBook (and S7 before that) together with a connection via ADSL (either mochaPPP or my wifi card) work extremely fast. On the road GPRS is not that slow either and in hotel rooms I tend to use my modem card which is fast again.

Re. Moving Opera - I thought that the Z disk is also in RAM so why is it not possible to delete files from it on the nB (or mB) ? It would be great to free 1.5 M of disk space / memory.
Answer to: Jack & Jim
Re.: TCP/IP MaylayBook - What TCP/IP problem and fix ? My email on th mB works without problems. By the way, my mB came with Opera 5.14.
Answer to: Daniele Squarci
Re.: HTML Email - For those not familiar with macros, you can also read html emails by copying the text (Ctrl-a & Ctrl-C) to a WORD file and export the text as a text file with the file extension ".html". Open the file again and it will open in your web browser. Of course, still easier to copy it straight into a text file with the Symbian text editor (or another one).
Re. Change of "from" address - There is an easier way. Create another mailbox and set it with the second "from" address you want to use (and that is all you use it for). Give it however the same smtp server as your default mailbox. When you want to send an email with the second "from" address choose in the email Ctrl-Shift-A and choose the second email account. It will automatically be sent when you next connect. If you use more than one ISP (as I do, so several smtp servers) use a macro to switch between the ISP's and automatically update the smtp server of the second email account. Once it is set up it is easy to use and works without problems (I have my work email address set in the second email account so my business relations don't even know whether I am in the office or not).

Subject: Email BCC
Hi Folks,
When Dick Chatjaval asked "Would anyone know how to set a default BCC (to myself) from the S7, without having to add it every time?" my first (and only) thought was a macro.
I use Merlin as well as Macro5 so my template macros are on a Merlin toolbar to keep the number of Macro5 hotkeys down. I send my relatives a daily eMail saying "I'm OK." and the macro for that was simple and I use others. It would be even easier to write a macro which just put an eAddress in the BCC field and then returned to the normal starting position. It could also put a default greeting and signature. One of mine even writes the whole eMail!
Happy days,
Phil.

I work as an 'IT-consultant' at a large office, and one of my tasks is to periodically man the helldesk. Why it's called that?
Well, today we received about 20 calls from users who had received more or less cryptic 'blocked' or 'banned' messages, and were afraid that THEIR computers were infected.(Of course they weren't as we run TWO different scanners, one on the email system and another on evPC, and update the signature files every morning)
Of the email borne viruses I can't remember a single widespread version that didn't fake the sender address the last year or two.
If the message contained a complete header I might have been able to track down the infected PC, but as it is, it just causes panic among the hordes.
As for the older ones doing the rounds...
if anti-virus software is sending messages to the people with infected machines, why are they still infected?
I sometime fix employee's private computers, and am often amazed by what I find...
If they have anti-virus software at all, it's usually so outdated that Napoleon wouldn't have touched it! (We believe that security starts at the home PC, so have bought a site license of an anti-virus tool that also includes every employee's private PC)
Why doesn't they use it?
'It's such a hassle to download the files'...
(The default setting is for the tool to download updates once every week... )

I know of those systems, and the question is 'What accuracy?'
Those systems were never able to detect anything smaller than a finger.
While you may be able to get away with just IR transmitters/receivers at the edges of the screen, unless they're raised a distance, the slightest curve of the screen will interrupt the beams...
(But it would look REALLY cool if it was built using visible light beams :-)
:-)
