Subject: Mbmview.opx for emulator/Psion XP?

Hi,

I'm now in the process of getting MBMView up and running on the emulator.

When I launch the app, I get the message "mbmview.opx does not exist", so I

guess the app needs a special WINS opx to work.

I searched the Internet for a WINS version of mbmview.opx, but didn't have

any luck. Could someone provide me with a link or a copy of the WINS OPX?

In addition, I was wondering if anybody has gotten a secure web-browser

(Opera), or an FTP app running on the emulator? I can't get nFTP or Opera

working. Also, is there a way to use the notebook's built-in wireless LAN via

the emulator?

Thanks,

(and many thanks to those who have already helped with emulator-related

issues: Chris, Edo, Itamar).

Peter

PS: my eyes used to glaze over when people posted about the emulator, since I

thought it was only something for software developers. But now that I have a

WinXP notebook, I am using the emulator as a full-fledged alternative OS,

just like some people use Linux.

But I think that the EPOC OS is much more user friendly than Linux, and for

tasks like emailing and web-surfing, using EPOC exposes my data to much less

of a risk of viruses and worms than if I used the notebook's built-in Windows

apps. I am thus using the emulator as far as possible as a full-fledged OS

for my computing needs - a trend I think that Chris Handley started.

With that in mind, the term "emulator" somehow doesn't convey the

practicality and fun of running a notebook on EPOC OS. Maybe we could come up

with a new term for EPOC-based notebooks, like "Psion XP" or "Epoc Wins".

Other suggestions welcome...

Subject: AOL Webmail and Opera 3.62

Hi, All,

I've gone to myopera/forums and googled extensively, but I'm probably

repeating a question that's been answered many times.

I have a new Mako, an AOL account, and would like to access my e-mail via

AOL's webmail at aol.com.

The site's error message is that I don't have cookies enabled, but I do

(Advanced/Logging/Enable Cookies).  All security settings are ticked.  I've

also tried using Opera as Mozilla 3.0, to no avail.

I'm also having the same trouble with aol.com with my Jornada 720 and Pocket

IE, so it may be more of AOL's madness.

I know, I know, it's a terrible outfit, but my wife's non-tech friends would

disappear from her life if we switched services.  (I use Compuserve Classic,

far superior, and of course works perfectly with Psion's E-mail program)

Thanks for any illumination,

Jake Fisher

Subject: netBook repairs or service?

Sorry to ask a question that has I'm sure been mentioned before, but on the

other hand as time marches on I'm sure more and more of us will face this

need. Where can we send a netBook for a service or repair? The superb POS

(who I have used a number of times to keep my 5 happy) say on their website

that they don't do 7/netBooks.

My wife's netBook has started occasionally crashing itself - it just presents

a glowing screen, which can only be removed by removing the batteries. But

then - and this has me stumped - when the batteries go back in, it takes a

good few tries to get the bootloader screen to come up. It's as if the

battery contacts or switch are playing up - but I have poked around inside

and can't see anything wrong, and then after reassembly it seems to be

working fine. Its done this twice this week. Anyone else had similar problems?

lately, 90% of the times I open the 5MX, I have the small alarm saying

"change backup battery". It disappears after a few seconds. I checked the

status and it still is "good" at 3,01 V. Changing the main batteries doesn't

wipe out everything. I tried cleaning the contacts, moving the cell.

What seems to be the problem? Thanks!

Subject: OPL UIDs | Email addresses

OPL UIDs

-----------

A while back, I developed some OPL applications and as they were for

commercial distribution, I requested UIDs. I was assigned multiple UIDs, but

did not use them all. I am now considering further development projects, but

do not wish to 'waste' the UIDs I have not used, but cannot remember how many

were assigned. I know I can contact Symbian, but was wondering if there is a

public database showing who has what? This may be a useful list of contacts

for software & their developers. Again, I suppose i could just ask Symbian,

but I was wondering if other developers had come across a database and

whether they found it useful?

Email addresses

-------------------

In a recent discussion with Armin Podtschaske, I carelessly included some

email addresses in the body of the posting. As these may be valid addresses

and eventually will be posted on the psioneering web site, I am wondering if

these too will be filtered from the message as senders email address are? If

they are, will they be replaced with a tag such as <email address>?

If not, sorry about the spam Armin.

p.s. Rolf, you missed an 'e' from FreeservE in the email address.

Subject: Apple iBook and 5mx

Hi Folks

I am a 5mx user (and Epoc Digest lurker) trying to escape the clutches of MS.

I am in the process of buying a second hand Apple iBook package (actually was

someone here who gave me the idea). So I currently know nothing about macs!

After a very confusing google / trawl through the net I wonder if someone

here could advise me on practicality of connection, backup and file transfer

between the ibook and the 5mx?

Thanks

Corrupt file

------------

To: Terry Gordon

I have had corrupt files in a folder and have only successfully removed them

using MS windows utilities or by copying all but this folder to my PC HDD,

formatting the disk and copying everything back again. I do this with a

multimedia card reader.

As for the extras bar, I think icons appear in there because the .aif file

remains in the folder. Instead of deleting the entire folder which will fail,

delete as much of the contents of the folder as you can. These should include

a .aif and a .app file, possibly a .mbm file and various others (.ini, .dat,

.cfg etc). You should also check the folder on C:\System\Apps\<AppName> as

the application may have put files there, even though you selected D: as the

destination. This happens when developers hard code C: as as destination

drive for whatever reason (often for no good reason, but sometimes to

guarantee a files availablility)

Netbook font

--------------

Is there a way to change the System font colour as I have some wallpapers

with darkish images and would like to make the font white instead of black?

Opera

-------

Is there a way of emulatiing the 'save target as' IE function in Opera?

Sometimes I click on links and they present me with a choice of cancel or

open to open an associated application, however, when the application does

not open the document, I would have to trawl through the Opera cache to find

the document.

Also, has anyone worked out how to stop the annoying form submission prompt?

Many thanks to all who reply,

This won't be much good to me then, as I normally use the Reko to connect to

the net because that is more or less always with me.

I seem to remember someone (else) has written an OPL solution to the SMTP

Authorisation problem, or was that just to keep worms attempting to crawl in

from crashing the Psion? Anyone care to enlighten me? I suppose this won't

solve the BCC bug though, but I can live with that.

Lots of it, but that would mean changing my habits. I've actually come to the

point where I prefer and type faster on the Reko than the 5mx and of course

the smaller machine is more portable.

> I can send them as an email attachment but the HTTP

I don't have web or Opera installed on either machine at the moment, so an

e-mail would be nice. It would be OK to have them available in case MoviStar

suddenly decide to change their settings and I have to install Java, SMTPauth

et all and use the 5mx for e-mail.

I don't know what things will be like in Brazil either, but a friend of mine

told me his GSM phone did work there, so I hope I will be able to use a Psion

and GSM for e-mail. Anyone have any details?

Subject: Re: 110V US Power Supply

I sent Thomas a private msg but others may need this.  Ed Hasbrouck has a

nice info on the mBook at  http://www.hasbrouck.org/netbook/  The following

is clipped from Ed's site and concerns the power plug for use in the US.

"You can find 15 or 15.5V power supplies at Radio Shack or the like; the

Radio Shack models with "Adaptaplug" output are the most widely available

that will work with the MalayBook or netBook. You might save some money by

getting a 15 or 15.5V adapter on eBay: there are usually plenty available

that were made for Toshiba, Panasonic, IBM, and Gateway laptops. For a spare,

I got a Toshiba PA2444U (100-240V input, 15V output), cut off the output

plug, and attached a Radio Shack Adaptaplug socket and Adaptaplug "C"

(yellow) plug. It weighs 18 oz. with cord, vs. 8 oz. for the Psion adapter

with USA plug adapter, but it has a much longer cord -- the Psion adapter

only has a 6' (1.8m) cord."

Radio Shack stores are found in most towns in the US. Houston, TX probably

has several. I'm going to guess you can get the whole thing (power supply,

Adaptaplug socket and Adaptaplug "C" (yellow) plug) for less than $30US. The

Adaptaplug socket is $5-7 and comes with one free "C" (yellow)... you pick

the correct Adaptaplug when you purchase. Might only need the Adaptaplug ("C"

(yellow)) if the power supply has the Adaptaplug socket installed.

Re.: Corrupt file - Sorry to say this but how often has been said in this

digest to regularly back-up data ?  I can't stress it enough, BACK-UP

REGULARLY !!   We all think it will not happen to "me".     Are you able to

export the data to a text (.csv) file and than import it in a DATA program on

the PC or even in excel ? You might be able to find something that way.

Answer to: Jim Watson-Gove

Re.: BCC fix on EPOC - It appears that is correct. Rolf has sent the digest

to 800 subscribers in one go from a third ISP with SmtpAuth that was

impossible without it.

Answer to: Terry Gordon

Re.: Delete files - Do Ctrl-p on the file and untick the "read only" setting.

Answer to: Jack

Re.: Smart dialing - The idea is that you enter the country code, area code

and phone number and wherever you are, based on your home town setting, the

Psion will dial the correct number. If I enter a UK number the Psion will

dial the area code and number when in a difference city, only the number when

in the same city and also the country code when I am out of the UK.

However, I much prefer to use The Dialer program when traveling, as it does

not interfere with the settings I usually use while in the UK.

Jack wrote>> Smart dialling should ;-] be within the reach of any moderately

"Should" is the operative word. I travel abroad frequently and in practice

smart dialling is difficult to apply properly. Location needs to be set up

for every country I travel to, and frequently the dialling conventions are

wrong. Example: in Italy the numbering system recently changed, abolishing

the area codes which were incorporated in the subscriber number. So a Rome

number went from 06-1234567 to plain 061234567. But the Psion will not

recognize the changes and insists on adding a 6 or 06 as an area code. After

fiddling about with all kinds of settings, I gave up on "smart" dialling and

simply use the mobile on GPRS when I'm out and about.
