This is official behavior, strongly recommended by Symbian: Put your ini

files on C to make sure it is always on a writable drive!

solve the BCC bug though, but I can live with that.

The OPL software you're thinking about is SINK2, a small app that opens some

TCP/IP ports on your system just to ignore any connection attempts. There is

obviously a bug in the TCP/IP stack which causes EPOC to hang at 100% CPU

when such an attempt is made on a unopened port. The recent

TCP/IP fix from Symbian takes care of the problem.

Now to the question why SmtpAuth wasn't written in OPL. I had two main

reasons: first of all, I'm a Java guy and OPL is still a little foreign to

me; next, SmtpAuth makes extensive use of multithreading which is very easy

to master in Java and problably not available at all in OPL.

You may have luck with your Revo(+) and Java if you upgrade it to 24 MB RAM

but that draws on the batteries.

This explains how to change some of Opera's settings, which are not always

saved correctly when changed in Opera itself. I'm not 100% certain that

the same tricks apply to Opera 3.62, as this thread was about Opera 5, but

I guess it's worth a try. Make sure that you back up Opera.ini before you

make any changes (just in case.)

Thanks! I did the "not recommended": I somehow find it inapproriate to repair

computers with analogue pieces of hardware ;-)

Rolf, the problem was solved by adding < > brackets to the Digest-adress...

They aren't visible in the addr.-line of OE, though, so I have no way of

knowing when they are present. Nor did I know I they are needed... I don't

get it... 8-)

Subject: Re: Apple iBook and 5mx

David, it is not easy or convenient, and one could not call it "synching",

but it can be done. First thing is to get a CF card reader and a spare CF

card. I make it a rule never to insert the Psion's D drive CF card (i.e. that

has all my data and installed programmes on it etc) into the mac, as it

becomes corrupted - the mac writes all kinds of resource files everywhere and

can't cope with the Psion system files. However there is no problem having a

dedicated "swapping" CF; if it gets corrupted it can simply be formatted on

the Psion and the data re-copied.

Secondly get a USB - Serial adapter (I use the Keyspan USB PDA adapter

http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/PDAadapter/). You can then plug in the

Psion serial lead. Use John Montgomery's Java Psion Link

http://website.lineone.net/~john.montgomery/psionlink/ to connect, backup and

transfer files. Incremental backups are a useful feature.

With a bit of fiddling you can swap contacts between Psion Contacts and Apple

Address book using VCF files. And using vcalendar from www.freepoc.de you can

swap vCal calendars between Psion Agenda and Apple iCal

Use nConvert http://www.neuon.com/apps/nconvert/ to convert word, data, etc.

files.

http://www-np.unimaas.nl/maas/s5/ has some useful info on general issues

connecting psions and macs.

After I ordered my Psion 5mx in summer 2002, I had to wait for it to

be manufactured before I received it, straight off the production line in

June 2002.  There was at least one further batch manufactured

later than that.

So actual period is more like 1.5 years than 2.5 years.

Subject: CF card speeds

Hi All,

I'm about to purchase a new 256Mb CF card for use in my netBook and 5MX and

I'd like one with a quick access speed as I use my current CF cards to store

many, many webpages and associated reference notes for my University studies.

I have two 256Mb CF cards; one labelled "SimpleTech" which is very fast and

is used in my netBook; the other marked "SanDisk Ultra 256" which came free

with the netBook. Despite its name, it's so slow, it makes watching paint dry

seem like an exciting lifestyle choice. I shall relegate it to digital camera

backup spare soon.

Has any done any work on testing CF card speeds or can anyone recommend a

fast card? Is it possible to measure the speeds of my current flock of

cards?

Thanks in advance,

Malcolm

Owen, the only other solution I know of is XJMail by a programmer from Japan.

It worked fine for me but does not have a pretty face. I'm sure you know of

it. It is a substitute for the built in email program on psions.

Dear Alan,

>>MMC, that's unfortunate Koi, but I agree about the Sony memorystick, even

though I've been a Sony fan for longer that a Psion fan.

I have relatively high opinion of a number of Sony products as well but the

Memorystick is not one of them. Not that there is anything innately wrong

with the MS, but we do not need another low-compatible type of memory/I/O

that gives no significant advantage that I can see. Sony is most likely

trying to capitalise on their market share to get adoption for the

memorystick. The real losers are the users, by buying Sony products we are

also buying into the memorystick and thus our current choices of platforms is

restricted to memorystck licensees.

I am not sure if something similar exists for Memorystick, but CF adaptors

for MMC are in the works, the chances that any MMC card you buy can in the

future work in your CF-based devices is high. The impetus for the industry

now seems to be to further develop MMC and SD cards. However it would not be

the first time either if the industry abandons formats for a newer kid on the

block.

Despite having a number of CF cards myself, I am not sure I would welcome the

adoption of CF for mobile phones/communicators. MMC/SD cards are the right

direction in my opinion. It use to be CF had the edge in memory capacity but

MMC seem to be catching up really quickly. With multiple vendors prices have

remained very competitive as well. Perhaps the CF format will evolve to cater

more for add-on accessories/periperals?

A warm welcome to the digest from  Arent Kits van Heijningen , you know the

Cooke and Tim Schweikert , you made the plunge from CompuServe to this Digest

?

AOL uses Challenge/Response -=IN ADDITION=- to cookies wich is only supported

in their own access software

If the C/R fails , AOL can remotely disable cookies in the browser or ignore

the setting of your browser

You can however try to access AOL Webmail via IMAP , using your jornada 720's

Inbox , do not know the actual server name , this should work through a

CompuServe Classic/Concentric/Earthlink account However as there's no

datacomms on the Revo , you have to use a laptop and PsiWin to carry over the

files

>>I know, I know, it's a terrible outfit, but my wife's non-tech friends

would disappear from her life if we switched services.  (I use Compuserve

Classic,  far superior, and of course works perfectly with Psion's E-mail

program)<<

Well , if you can get IMAP up and running you could access AOL Webmail using

your Jornada or your Revo ( possibly paired with an IR-enabled Symbian phone

) so no need to switch services

But even if you could not access AOL Webmail at all , why not let your wife

have AOL and use CompuServe Classic ( evt with an external POP or IMAP server

such as GMX.DE ) for all your business and personal email

Early on I "mastered" smart dialling because I travelled a lot, had a 9

access phone at work and a standard phone at home.  A real PITA but it worked.

Then one day it dawned on me that all I had to do was untic the d---d thing,

and dial out manually on whatever motel phone I had, going for the modem

burst, noting down the numbers on a sheet of paper.  Once I had it, I entered

the 1 or the 9 or whatever to access the ISP number into the setup.  Haven't

smart dialed for years - dumb dialing works for me.

keyboard and touch screen. For these reasons it it is more a Series 3

replacement than a Series 5 replacement. Apart from that it seems to be an

amazing machine.>

Yeah, I really miss my S5 keyboard as well.  IMHO the S3 keyboard was still

better than the current Communicator model so the new 9500 should be

acceptable rather than good.  The strange thing is, I didn't think I'd ever

get on with the lack of a touchscreen when I first got my 9210 (I was forever

tapping at it to no avail!) but I was very surprised how quickly I adapted to

it and how good Nokia are at making the GUI easy to operate.

Reply to Koi Hin:

<As you can see, it is MMC. I, however, am very happy it is NOT Sony

memorystick or its variants. This has emerged as a strong contender for me

personally as a successor device to my Revo. The other contender would be the

Sharp SL C7xx series. Will have to wait till I try my hands on one before I

make a final decision.>

I too dislike anything that ties you to one manufacturer (even my Sony TV has

a memory stick slot but really should have a multi-card reader instead!).

The old 9210 couldn't cut it as a successor to my 5mx for me but this new one

is definitely looking like a proper replacement.  Much as I love my S7 it's

too big to be portable enough for my needs.

Reply to Terry Gordon:

<Tourmate keeps popping up in my extras icon.  I have it on my D drive and my

Mbook has been through several hard resets and yet it stays.

I deleted everything that I could (deleting the log file on drive D got it

out of the extras iocon) but there are some nonsense-looking files in a

Tourmate folder in the system folder on drive D that won't allow me to delete

them.  Is there a sure way to delete them?  Should I just delete them on my

macintosh?>

I know nothing about this app but if you're simply hard resetting then

restoring from a backup then you are simply reinstalling whatever is causing

the problem.  It's probably caused by those orphaned files you mentioned and

I suspect you can't delete them because they're set to "read only".  Try Crt

+ P whilst the offending files are highlighted and you can then untick the

read only dialog box.  Hope this helps.

Subject: OPL question

Hi

Does anyone know how I can delete a directory with all files and

subdirectories from OPL? The "DELETE" command only works for files and not

directories and the RMDIR command only deletes empty directories. The problem

is that my program doesn't know what subfolders are in the directory as this

changes outside of my control.

I also need to check whether a particular application is open and close it if

it is. My program already uses the Macro5 extensions for other things if it

helps that I have those loaded.
