Subject: Palmtop User / Dual_O / Freeserve Access / NetUtils / Backups

I have downloaded Dual_O and am having some problems. I wanted to seek the

lists advice, before I approach the author, with a couple of questions. For

those that don't know Dual_O gives you the capability of running two versions

of Opera on one EPOC device. I have Opera 5.x installed on Z: on my netBook

already and I have followed the instructions and installed Dual_O.sis then

clicked on the Opera 3.62 button. At this point the app tells you to install

Opera 3.62, which I have done. There is then a dialog box which asks if you

would like to start the unitialised Oprea Browser. No closes the app, whereas

Yes gives me a Kern-Exec3 error. A soft reset hasn't achieved anything good.

Is anyone elsse using this app on a netBook? Having a netBook as your only

form of computer for internet usage is not all that it is cracked up to be,

so I need a solution.

Having just changed my Freeserve email address to the one not above ;-) I had

all sorts of hassles with the tech support who were playing guessing games on

the access number I should be using. About 20ukp in support calls later, they

managed to come up with one that I could get through on. For those who might

come across a similar problem, here is a list of their Anytime access

numbers: -

0808 9933251

0808 9933265

0808 9916080

0808 9933257

0808 9916163

0808 9916164

You have to have an Anytime account with them to be able to access these

numbers. At the moment that is £7.50 per month for the first three months

followed by £15 per month thereafter for unlimited access, but only from your

own BT landline :-( The saving of £7.50 per month for those first three

months will hopefully cover your support call costs when you can't get

through!

I would be interested to know how people track down exactly whose PC is

infected with a virus that attempts to "connect" to other PCs. I know

something of TCP/IP so I am well aware that when I have Sink2 running I am

presented with addresses of PCs that are trying to "connect" to my Psion as

their IP is displayed along with the port that they are trying to connect on.

By the fact that the first 2 octects of the IP are the same as mine I assume

that these are users of the same ISP as me. If I then portscan that IP they

are never there. I have to assume that they are either running a firewall or

have XP as their OS with the firewall turned on. Is this a reasonable

assumption? I know that the port scanner (the wonderful NetUtils) is working

as I have scanned my son's IP when he has been connected and he has reported

his firewall reporting attacks on the sequence of ports that I am scanning

on. So how do you track them down?

After moaning for months about the problems in doing unattended automatic

backups of my netBook, I now find that I have Crontab, FastBackup and

EPOCBackup all working. Surely an embarrasment of riches! So pleased am I

that I use all three apps to do three different backups each night. Of

course, I never took into account that the rarely used Powerbase address book

that I back up so religiously was actually corrupt. Not even EDU will repair

it :-( On a CD somewhere will be a copy of what I hope is the file before it

became corrupt.

Thanks

Andy

PS. Further to my problems with Dual_O. Whenever I run the app I just get a

title bar and the buttons are not visible. No amout of removing the app and

soft resetting will bring the buttons back. I couldn't even get it to work on

another netBook. The MC218 just doesn't want to know with the installation of

Opera for some odd reason. Perhaps I shall try the MBook next!

just wanted to correct one misconception. The digest team actually has not

shut down a discussion for a long time (actually, once only), and certainly

this discussion was neither censored nor shut down by the team. We only

requested the subscribers to move on as in our opinion all that could be said

was said and any further messages would not be contributing to anything. In

the end this is a digest about EPOC matters and not a general "after hours"

discussion side.

Re. Psion interest - Amazingly enough whenever I use my mBook (and S7 before)

in public areas I always get remarks like "wow, what is that one, a small

laptop, where can I buy one, are you satisfied, etc. !  Last night I sat in a

restaurant in Antwerp checking my email and again someone started to ask me

questions about it. Just amazing that while the interest is always there they

still didn't make it.

in the Psion email program and the emulator on a PC (laptop) and you open the

message, would the virus still be activated or is it in a totally protected

EPOC environment and will it not harm the PC ?

ahead.

Galton, Darwin's cousin, proved statistically that prayer was ineffective.

"Because, week in, week out, the Book of Common Prayer requires churchgoers

to beseech God to 'Endue the king/queen plenteously with heavenly gifts;

Grant him/her in health and wealth long to live,' Galton reasoned that

royalty should live longer than others of comparable social rank. His

conclusion on the utility of prayer was therefore unequivocal: 'Sovereigns

are literally the shortest-lived of all who have the advantage of affluence.'"

If we disregard which cards we already own, I would think xD cards would be

the best option for small mobile devices. I know there are CF adapters

available for xD cards, so you could plug the card into a Psion if needed or

into any other computer that has a card reader. AFAIK, xD's are the smallest

memory cards on the market.

My Fuji s5000 camera uses xD cards and my one worry about them is that

they're so tiny that if I change cards in the field, I might end up dropping

the card on the ground and not be able to find it again. Not only expensive,

but a major pain if the dropped card happens to contain a day's worth of work.

One idea which just struck me was that with the tiny size of xD cards, there

could actually be room for two xD cards in a CF adapter to use in our Psions.

It should be possible for the device to treat the two disks as separate

partitions of the same disk. I seem to remember someone on the list was

successful in getting a Psion to recognise both partitions of a partitioned

CF. (?) Of course, unless someone sees an application for such a device other

than our Psions, nobody is going to manufacture it.

From: Armin Podtschaske

Subject: Re: Smart dialling / dialling 0190.. in German from abroad

Re: Smart dialling

To: Jack

If you tick the "smart dial", the number dialed depends on:

- country code and area code of your ISP in control panel - "Internet"

- the Country and the Area code of the used location in control panel -

"Dialling"

The trick is:

The Area code in "Dialling" has to be entered with leading national access

digit (a zero in most countries).

In "Internet" it has to be entered _without_ the leading zero.

The country code in "Internet" has to be entered without any zeroes and

pluses, the "+" in "Standard dial-up number" can't be changed.

Leading zero is not always a zero. In the USA this is a "1", but in most

other countres it is a zero. This leading digit has to be the digit, that is

omittet from the area code, when it is combined with the international access

code to form the number to dial from abroad.

My settings are (Munich, Germany):

In "Dialling": Country [Germany] Area code [089].

in "Internet": "Standard dial-up number" [+49 89 123456]

(Country: "49" and area: "89")

In case the country matches the international code of the number to dial, the

international access code is omitted and the area code of the location in

"Dialling" is compared with the area code of the number to dial.

In that case, if the area code in "Dialling" matches the area code of the

number to dial, just the local number is dialed, else the number is dialed

with preceeding national access code (mostly zero) plus area code.

Just play with the settings a little.

I can tell you your settings, if you send me the number of your ISP in three

versions:

1.) as you dial it if you are in the same areacode region

2.) as you dial it from another area in your country

3.) as you dial it from abroad

I tried to verify this with my old telephone bills, but have thrown them away

some time ago. At least adding the areacode of Frankfurt works (069 191011).

Maybe somebody living not in Germany can please pick up the phone, dial +49

191011 or +49 69 191011 and tell us, if there is a modem answering. Next

month when I'll be in turkey for two weeks, I'll try to email that way and

tell you if it works or not.

At least connecting the psion via cellphone from Germany to +49 191011 works

definitely. I'm sending this mail through this connection.

You removed a possible write protection flag, did you?

They might be open without to be listed in the tasklist. Try a softreset,

then try to delete them immedeatly.

Try to delete them with the CF in another computer. If you try this in

another Psion, rename D:\System before inserting the CF to the other Psion.

If that doesn't help, rename D:\System, backup C:, do a Hardreset, delete

every tourmate file on D: and in the backup of C:, restore C:.

So no area codes any more in whole Italy?

Just change your number under "Smart" dialling to leave the area code empty

Oh how careless you are ;-)

No Problem - this addris the address I got from one of my

ISP's (T-online). As I said in the discussion, I completely ignore all

traffic on this address. Every one and then I look at it and always find some

two or three spam's, but there are not more even if I don't check mail for

By the way, I planing an answer on your last mail re internet- and

Shall I shift the discussion to private mail or is there still public

Pleas answers to this question to my private address.

Kits and Ian,

Thanks much for the help and pointing me to other links.  No joy, however.  I

installed Opera 5.14, tweaked it, but it won't even let me into aol.com, let

alone permit me to sign into my e-mail account.

I went back to 3.62 but its *.ini is pretty primitive; doesn't seem to have

nearly the tweaking capability of 5.14.

It's got to be something hostile in the AOL site itself.  Hotmail works,

albeit at a glacial pace, and other sites slowly emerge.

I wish I could WAP to AOL, but that would be too gracious for such a nasty

organization to offer.

Kits, how much longer do you think AOL will let us hold onto our Compuserve

Classic accounts?  Classic Zaurus users have been asking that question for

five years now :)

Hello,

I'm just getting used to my 5mx. I bought it used and did not check CF slot

at first. Now I have 16 MB Compact Flash that I have formatted on Windows

with FAT file system. The only thing I get when I insert the card and try to

switch to disk D is "Disk is not present" message. Here is the list things I

already checked:

- latch on doors is fine and pushes the switch inside the Psion or I think

so. I took a look inside the Psion and everything seemed to be as it should

be.

- card is inserted in proper orientation.

I run out of options and asking kindly for help. Could it be that the Psion

simply does not like this particular model of a compact flash card? It is

Canon branded Lexar card. It came with a Canon digital camera.

Thank you very much,

I got them to give me more flexibility whenever I cannot use my Nokia 6310i

to communicate with my 5mx.

My problem is that I do not have any instructions as to how to configure it.

What modem, internet and email settings should I use?

I have configured my Psion 5mx to work properly with my Nokia phone.

All suggestions greatly appreciated!
