>>Re.: Modems - If you try to use a US Robotic modem with a Psion it is difficult to use. You will need a very specific init string, maybe Rolf Brunsting can help you further. <<
It's not that difficult at all , the gotcha is that you leave both data and fax init strings empty and type the following in the reset initstring field :
AT&F1&K2
In the "modem" tab :
Name : US Robotics Sportster/Courier
Speed : 19200 baud ( for s7/nB/MB/nPClassic 38400 ) , higher speeds will NOT improve performance ( if you have your Mail directory on "D' the data exchange speed between Psion and the card is the limitingfactor when downloading ! ) Connect: via Serial
In the "Advanced" tab tick OFF :
terminal detect (DSR/DTR)
carrier detect (DCD)
select Hardware Flow Control
Using ( formerly ) yours truly I had it ( an US Robotics Sportster Classic ) up and running in 5 minutes ( like I had it on an IDT/Oregon Osaris (now dead) and a s5mx dutchie ( still in need of repair )
Speaker : On the US Robotics modems you can control and even turn off the speaker volume altogether using the volume control on the modem itself !

I haven't read the digest for a few days and now that I have I can see that people have been frustrated by my spam trap.
Because I have my email address on my web sites it gets harvested and used by just about every spammer in the known universe. I was getting between 50 and 100 junk emails a day offering to give me the worlds largest private parts! Not good reading for my kids who share the PC.
Anyone who sends me an email will receive an email in return, via spamarrest.com, asking that you confirm your email address before the email gets sent to me. It works incredibly well and now I only receive emails from humans (who reply) and not from automatic mailers but you do need to reply to the spamarrest email, if you don't your email won't come through.
Plenty of people did manage to do this so I know the system is working - check your inbox to see if you missed the email Steve.
Anyway as for the giveaway all items went within the first hour of the digest coming out - sorry! I will be sending them out tomorrow for those who got in first.
The Palmtop mags are still available to anyone who wants to collect them but if no-one contacts me within the next 7 days they will be recycled.
Sorry for those that couldn't get through but I'd rather upset a few digesters than have 100's of spam emails.

Subject: UPS5 Digest
Hi Folks,
Though I can't remember the URL, I (comparatively) recently scooped a lot of UPS5D zips which I am slowly reading. The site was moribund and the eAddress for the owner was abandoned, neither of which is a criticism.
This archive is definitely incomplete (it doesn't pretend otherwise). I have not gotten to the release of the 5mx yet and, of course, there are few references to the 3/3a/3c/3mx machines.
There are two points here.
1: Can anyone point me to a *complete* (or more nearly so) archive?
2: (In the absence of 1:) Does anyone want what I've got?
Off list replies (particularly to 2:) are probably better (and for those who don't know, UPS5D was the predecessor to this digest - thanks again, Itamar & co.).
Happy days,
Phil.

You probably need to register with them first but I find that very worthwile because they don't flood your mailbox but send a lot of useful information.

I doubt it. It is far more likely to be the ISP that he uses, or more specifically the number of infected Windows users on his ISP. Therefore it seems quite likely he uses a big ISP, if the he has the freezing problem often.

I am finding that although the address files can be exported to the mac, much of the information doesn't appear on the screen. This is clearly a problem with the mac Address book, since the amount of information on the screen various from one of my macs to the other. No matter how much I fiddle with the preferences, I can't get the data to show.
Can anybody tell me how I can get the Apple Address book to show everything that has been imported on a .vcf card?

Thanks. Too often people think that science is absolute truth that can't be objected to or be discussed.<
OT, but science is more and less than that. Science is not an ideology or a religeon, it is the study of everything. A set of observations bla, bla, bla is a law of science determined through implementation of a theory, proven by empirical testing. Science is not an absolute truth, but simply a term to define the study of everything. The nature of scientific achievement is based on discussion, proving and disproving theories. Disproving someones 'absolute truth' is just as important as proving the theory to be correct. When something can no longer be disproved, it is not opinion but fact. All scientific study is open to discussion. Without discussion and objection, scientific advancements can not be made.
If your comments had the word 'science' replaced with the word 'religeon', I would agree wholeheartedly. ;-)

Wireless Router
------------------
To: PRAR
Since you are connecting via cable broadband, I suggest you get one that can plug direct into your cable box as this will have a built in cable modem. This means your router should have a WAN / backbone connection.
Get a 802.11g router that is 802.11b compatible.
I think the Buffalo Airstation is quite good for this and it comes with all the services you will need, such as NAT, firewall and WEP.
Don't forget to register the routers mac address with NTL otherwise it will fail to connect. Once you've registered your router, you will no longer need to register any workstations.
CF card speeds
------------------
To: Tony Cabot
. Here are a couple of sources for CF Card speeds. These are primarily for digital cameras. <snip> The difference between the 12X speed of my older card and the 40X of the new one (both 256MB) is quite noticeable.
Something to be aware of is that certain CF cards are designed to work at higher speeds only in devices that share a certain technology, namely, WA(Write acceleration). Devices such as Psions that do not employ the technology will not benefit from the advertised speeds.

I am currently looking for circuit diagrams for Psion machines. Revo's (Mako's) diagram is needed the most, but the one of Series 5mx will be also very handy.
If you have any of them please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks.

Hi Owen,
I now have version 8.20.0107 which I downloaded last month after I upgraded my PC to Windows XP. I could have sworn there was an option to convert to mono. Oh well, maybe that was another program. That's one big (!) program... 8750?MB each = 6 GB. Good luck.
I can't remember what battery drain was in the 5mx. I don't play music on the netBook enough to worry about it.

I have version 7.20.0173. I can't remember ever paying for it, or seeing requests to upgrade. I think it possibly came with my CD writer?

It allows me to convert down to 8kbps, but not to mono, so the files still end up twice as big as they need to be. 48kbps stereo is around 1/4 of the size of the original 128kbps file, still way too big to make it realistic to put an 8CD Spanish course on my 5mx.

I'm glad the 9500 utilises MMC cards as the 9210 uses MMC I have a 256Mb card so hopefully will be able to use it straight in the 9500 I used to back up via PC software but now just back my card up via my multi reader. and just back up the communicator's C disk to PC. I must admit I did upgrade from a 9210 to the 9210i and since have never had a lack of memory warning. I don't find the phone a brick, I either use it in the Car cradle, or open (handsfree) on my desk, if I do use it as per normal against the ear, Its fine. tried a Nokia 8210 for about a week when I still had my MC218 but it was far to small. And you can use it on aeroplanes, in flight mode Phone is totally switched off. I often find people totally dumb struck when I show them what it does, and what I can do, and do, do with it. I work with others who between them have two Ipaq's and two Sony Clie's one other has a Revo, none of them use their units, to the full potential, I had to set up Leo's Ipaq to get email via his mobile the other day. Both items have bluetooth, he didn't realise he could leave phone in pocket or brief case to use with bluetooth, he thought they had to be next to each other, like IR ! All they seem to use them for is Games and a few photo's via there digital cameras. SMTP Auth as yet have never had a problem with this, but I did notice Psilogic have a SMTP auth program on their website. I don't think I could ever move over to a device you need to hit with a stick to get it to work. Could it be a program you use ? Since I bought the nB, it's never been fully set-up like the 7. The nB has much less on it than the 7 apart from the apps from Z:. NetStatRF was run to see what it was and that stopped Email working, requiring the first soft reset. This is my major suspect. I'd like to remove it's icon from Extras, but its on Z:. A problem also occurred with a folder in the root of D: when I tried to delete it after removing all it's files. It would not delete, with an error message saying the folder was in use. So I renamed it 'In Use' and left it. I've today removed the batteries and fitted the 32Mb module, so I've now got 50Mb on C:. I'm not restoring anything, but reinstalling from .SIS. I'm hoping that the frequent resets have gone! I'm mentioning these experiences in case any others have seen this. While going through the waiting process of my sending it to Psion USA (who evidently sent it to UK who sent it to Europe, repaired it & sent it back), Eleanor moved into the Treo to supplement her MBook as a walk-around-machine. She loved it and said she didn't need another 5mx. So I figured the repaired 5mx, when it returned, would be a backup machine. Just like me, after a month of living with the Treo she was missing some of the functions (keyboard mostly) of the 5mx. Today I received the 5mx from Psion and mentioned to her how much better the screen on the repaired 5mx was compared to my old faithful 5mx. She took one look and said she wanted the newly arrived 5mx and would retire the Treo. So much for my spare 5mx <vbg>. I have a Mako that has been to Canada for a battery and memory fix. The upgrade seems to have worked but I can promise nothing (who can make promises about a Mako/Revo?). It holds a charge etc. Other than the generic problem, the Mako is fully working. If anyone out there has a 5mx with bad cable that is resisting buying yet one more cable repair and would like to have a Mako to retain EPOC and a Treo to play with Palm OS, I am ready to trade knowing full well I will have to send the machine back to Psion for repairs.
