Re.: Science & Darwin - Quite a while back we already discussed this matter in a very interesting discussion in the Psion forum of Compuserve. I have no problem with your explanations and statement. Yes, there are certain basic fundamental laws in nature that science does explain and that can be taken as "absolute truth". I would say that gravity is another example. However, science can only explain what is measurable, while clearly some matters in this world cannot be measured. Telepathy does exists but is not measurable by science. Beauty does exists but is not measurable by science (what I see as beautiful someone else might well define as ugly). Some people would like science to prove everything and that is impossible.
As to Darwin, I think that there are many links missing in the theory that are taken for granted with the reasoning that "these will be found one day". There are strong links that human being might have developed from the apes, but the link has yet to be found. What I personally find strange in the Darwin theory is that it is only the human beings that developed into beings with a self-conscience, a culture and being capable of development. Why did no other string(s) of beings with these caracteristics develop from this large group of apes ? And why did no other type of animal develop these caracteristics ?
For me the Bible is clearly not a book of science and to try and teach the Bible as science is of course incorrect. The Bible teaches the religious person that the creation of the earth was not a random coincidence but rather a deliberate act by a higher being, called God. It explains this creation in general terms, but certainly does not intend to explain the scientific laws behind it. A non-believing person can see the Bible either as just another story or as a moral code of behaviour, but again nothing to do with science (IMHO).
Re. Digest news - thoughts - First of all, just to make clear, the thoughts of the day were not banned from the digest. At the end of your message you write that the team should have sent the original offensive message back to the writer. But is that not censorship as well that people in general do not want ? Does the team have to censor every message that is offensive ? And who will decide what is "offensive". I think that is a worse choice than to leave discussions take their course until most has been said and people are basically repeating each other at which time we "requested" the digest members to move on, but again _without_ censoring or deleting any further messages about the subject. Accordingly it just died out. In general there is no subject banned from the digest (see the above answer to you <G>). However, we do have to take into account that most subscribers subscribed to the digest to read about EPOC matters and not about "after hours" matters. This means that we do have to keep a certain balance in the digest, which until now has been great without any action taken. But should we allow any subject ? If the digest for example would change to discussing mainly Windows or Linux based machines, would that not undermine the "reason d'etre" of the digest and chase many subscribers away ? It is easy to criticise but it is harder to keep the balance right. Personally I believe the digest team has done a great job until now and should be given a little bit of trust and leeway to continue in the same way and spirit.
Best regards,

Thanks for this. I also got an offlist suggestion that I could use the Wins version of King Midas' new program. That's probably not necessary for the emulator, but I'll look into it for EPOC use when I get the 5mx back or replace it with something nice, big and colourful.
While I'm at it, thanks to everyone who provided information about 5mx repairs. One kind soul even offered to fix everything for me if I snailmail the mx to him in Germany. I couldn't quit using Psions even if there was a new and better device. I'd miss all the nice people on this digest!

Not according to Vlad who insists they never break... :o)
Anyhow, I'm not sure how old it is, but probably around three years. Is that _very_ old for an electronic device with no moving parts?

It's been on my lust list a long time, but that's a long list, and there are other things higher up on the list.

You could try to make a copy of the Mail folder to a safe place, then delete the file \System\Mail\Index. Next, create an empty text file called Index to replace it either with the text editor or by exporting to text from Word. You won't be able to save the file direct to \System\Mail\ from Word, so you'll have to put it somewhere else and then move it into the \System\Mail\ folder. When you launch Email, the software will recreate the Index. This may or may not solve your problem. It may also find some long-deleted e-mails that for some reason have only been deleted from the index and not from the disk. If you manage to mess it up, simply revert to your backup of the Mail folder.

If the fault is in your Mail folder or any of Email's other working files, it will probably be there when you restore your files after upgrading the OS.

I'll try this, but just out of Interest, what makes you think a Mac would do it when EPOC, WindoZe (2k) and a Nikon camera aren't even able to see the card? I'll also keep an eye open for any digital camera users I happen to meet and ask them to have a go at formatting it if their camera happens to use CF.

I'll keep it here at least until I get my 5mx repaired so I can have another go with EDU. I've never known a long distance cruising yachtsman to throw anything away, at least no the weight of the accumulated junk is threatening to sink him. It would take a few CF cards to do that!

What a shame you didn't come around for a cup of tea or a beer! Are you still in the Canaries? I'm now on passage from Los Cristianos to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
For anyone visiting Spanish waters or Spanish dirt (the stuff I moor my boat to...) I use the following Internet settings here with the Movistar GSM provider:
Phone number: 551
Username: MOVISTAR
Password: MOVISTAR
SMTP: smtp.movistar.com
DNS addresses: 194.179.1.100 and 194.179.1.101
I don't know if this only works for a MoviStar SIM card or you can use the same if you are roaming on MoviStar with an alien card.
The price (with MoviStar pay as you go SIM) is:
Price: €0.20 peak (8.00am - 8.00pm). €0.10 off peak. (This information is a bit old, but I don't think it's changed, at least not by much.)
For anyone travelling to Spain, it may be useful to note that the price for sending an SMS to the rest of Europe is an absolute rip off. I pay € 0.70 per text message to Norway or the UK! Again, I don't know whether this is specific to the MoviStar pay as you go SIM or also applies if you are roaming in Spain with an alien SIM.

Subject: Stupid questions
Dear friends, Please forgive a few more ignorant, and possibly stupid, questions from a beginner. Owens talks of "thousands of software titles available for EPOC". But where do I find them? E.g. is there a small encyclopedia somewhere? Well, maybe to much to ask for. Or a good English-English dictionary? Which formats does EPOC support and which can Psiwin convert? E.g. a friend of mine has written a simple but useful flight navigation programme in visual basic (also requring vbrun100). Would that stand a chance? And, talking of that, has anyone seen a flight simulator for epoc? There has been much talk of cyrillic character this winter, where can these be found? Can they be switched on and off? And how about Arabic, which requires writing frpn right to left - that at least is something Windows can do.

>Before you all rush to send your Psions to SRS tempted by this great offer I have to add:
They indeed charge 49 Euros for any memory upgrade (not just to 24 MB) but that does not include a cable repair. The cable repair (including cable) will be 70 Euros (60 for some models). However if you order a memory upgrade as well you can get that for the reduced price of 25 Euros. And while they don't sell parts in general they do sell the cable for 29 Euros.
COD only for 12.50 goes for Germany. The German postal service will charge 16.50 alone for shipping abroad + COD fee. However, there aren't COD agreements with every foreign postal service. Where there is none you will have to pay in advance. Check out before you order!
It's still a good offer but ~110 Euros all in all will be a more realistic figure - still better than POS, I guess.
>Astrid
I just just want to confirm the COD problem. I had my Revo batteries replaced by SRS and picked up the machine personally, and had a little chat with them at the time. They confirmed that they basically don't do COD with the UK any more. I understand that they ask for pre-payment (wire the
money). Ask them first.
I found SRS a neat and proper little outfit and can only recommend them.

Subject: Back-ups
Hi
My Mako seems to back up to 4 files on my PC's "C" drive: "Arc.001", "Arc.002", "Arc.003" & "Backup". I would like to do a restore to my Mako from an earlier backup rather than the most recent one. Does anyone know how I can (a) find out which is the relevant backup and (b) set PsiWin to do a restore from it?
Thanks

Subject: DACOM Gold Card problem, help needed
Hi,
I bought a "DACOM GoldCard Netglobal 56k+Fax+10Mb Ethernet" card and its "Ethernet" part does not work.
What works:
- its 56k modem works flawlessly,
- my "pre September 2002" netBook works perfectly with a WLAN card on the same local network (Internet setup OK)
Facts:
- according to Sylvester.org, this card should work with netBook
- I followed Sylvester.org's instructions and found:
- at "switch on" the green "Link" led turns on, and after a few sec it turns off,
- at "connecting to the internet" (opening TCP/IP communication) the green "Link" led turns on, but after 10 seconds turns off, no "Data" led blinking at all, and no connection, no chance to Ping
Ethernet setup
- DHCP, device: Psion Dacom Gold Card, Advanced: off, 1800
Please help,

Is there an upgraded font that I can download?
