I've managed to avoid feeling the need to contribute to this 'debate'

on signatures. I feel that every member of the digest has the right to

post as they wish.  I don't even mind contributors complaining of sig

files, but things are rapidly going too far. Owen's sig at least has

the virtue of being interesting as it reveals something about him

- not the thought for the day, it bores me but I don't mind that it

is included. It is generally interesting to see some of the interests

of members reflected in their postings.

On the other hand this latest posting from you on the subject only

reveals one thing - you are an idiot!

(not my first choice, but the only word likely to be published)

Apologies that my previous posting broke the cardinal rule as I didn't change the subject line.

To move away from sig file and onto lighter subjects. The digest has always prided itself on the fact that it delivered via EPOC devices and yet the last two issues have contained the following in the headers:

X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1

Has the loss of EPOC device availability from Psion hit us so badly that we need to resort to the world of M$ for our software. How the mighty have fallen!

Subject: DIgest via Eudora

Hello Steve,

You are very observant! Yes, I have been having problems sending the digest with so many BCC's from my S7, resulting in frequent hangs and complete freezing of my Psion. I still prepare digests on Rolf  Vonau's program on

my Psion then transfer to my windows laptop for sending. Anyhow, I suppose the important thing is to get the digest out reliably. Even trying out 4 or 5 different ISP's does not solve this. I wish all steps could be done on only my Psion as this would save me lots of time. It seems that the sending problems coincided with the worms/viruses that shut down several ISP's in Thailand during February. SInce then, despite hard resetting my S7, deleting/re-setup Mail program etc several times, I still have problems.

Any suggestions on solving this would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

Dick Chatjaval

Dear poster of this turgid piece:

Sir,

On the basis of your postings here alone, you appear to be a pompous and pedantic ass.  Surely that is not your intention. In the flesh you may well be an amiable cove.

There is nothing wrong with Mr Morgan's signatures and is not for you to lecture him as to his use of a GPRS facility or direct him to an internet cafe.

As for the large quantity of utter gobbledegook you have appended to your whinges, reproduced here and for which I apologise to other group members who have already had it inflicted on them once (which is too often), which you strangely describe as your 'Stereogram' signature, I am compelled to revise my opinion of you as a pompous and pedantic ass.  You seem to be a complete idiot.

'It is sometimes easier to see with a dark background'.  Possibly.  I will humour you and enquire as to how that pile of drivel would be better viewed against a dark background.  Well?

Life with the Netpad minus its backup battery is nightmarish. I am frequently finding that the machine freezes and rather than doing a soft reset, I have to do a hard one. Hard because everything is lost, rather than being kept in memory with a back-up battery.

Short of sending the machine to the UK, is there any way to install a backup battery myself? Be grateful for any help?

My Revo is not playing up at the moment and turns on with amazing

docility. Wisely I have deactivated the password, which has made

turning on easier.

What I don't understand is how the battery problem is a problem of

software. Why is it that if I press the on button frequently enough the

machine will eventually turn on? Is this a software issue?

Subject: MC218 CD / Sniping / Lottery win / Passworded Zip / netPad WLAN / Empower / etc

Thanks for all of the offers of a CD or a download. I have contacted one of the members of the list and he is going to sort me out a CD.

A download would have been difficult at 56k and I am sure that the IT department would have had a  moan if I had have downloaded it over their system at work.

I haven't asked anyone about providing me with a CD before. so deja vu is broken on this occasion!

I just sniped my way to a Psion Dacom netglobal card on Ebay at £12.50. Especially satisfying as one has just sold for £25! Having fax and ethernet in one card is a boon. I am trying to snipe another one and then connect the two through a hub and try FTPServer and nFTP as a way of transfering files between two (or more!) netBooks. Just because you can I suppose.

For the second time since the start of the UK Lottery I have managed to get 5 numbers. Unfortunately they were on two different lines this time though :-( Looks like I will have to sell my soul to get a P900!

I have a zipped archive which has been pasword protected. Is there any way to discover the password using a hex editor? I know that there are tools available for windows, but I only have doors! Seriously, it is personal file that I would like to get into.

Has anyone on this list who owns a netPad, got WLAN built in?

Does anyone remember Empower? Its a contact management app. Whenever I try to run it I am told that it cant find c:\system\apps\opx\message.opx this is even though the opx has its own sis installer and I can see the file in the correct place. I have tried to install it to both C: and D: after removing it through the add/remove apps in the control panel. Would one of you programmers (or other clever folk) mind telling me where I am going wrong?

Does anyone on the list use a Magellan SportTrak Pro GPS. I saw one on Gadgets and Stuff last night and it looked really good. Any comments? Does it connect up to a Psion. Have you used Garmin's before? If so how does it compare? Judging by some of the phones that they were showing it was a repeat!

Is there a cheap source of in car chargers for the netBook? i have got an invertor but the idea of all that wiring doesn't excite me much. Might look a bit odd having a permanently wired 2 gang 13a 3 pin socket box screwed to the dashboard!

Hi you all,

I don't think that long signatures are useful. But I don't think either that they are worth fighting about. So, if you share my opinion, perhaps we could concentrate on the real

problems in the epoc world?

As Antony's "Stereogram signature", what ever that might be, clearly showed: you can "decorate" your mails in a much worse way than by adding some geographic

data.

From: Manuel Campos Galvan

Subject: Owen's Sig

Owen:

I felt compelled to provide an answer to your message. Indeed, I was the operator that edited your signatures for the past three weeks or so. The correspondence you refer to in your message was with me. As mentioned before during our correspondence, the initiative to edit your signature months ago (together with that of a number of subscribers, for example lawyers who have very lenghty signatures and so far have not complained) was not out of personal animosity, but rather trying to be considerate to other subscribers and (believe it or not) having you in mind because of the well known expense that it is for you to download messages while roaming on GPRS.

The decision last week to edit your signature was, born due to necessity (please note that at least I, in consideration of other subscribers, including yourself, keep editing when possible long signatures). When I received several of your emails for one digest, the joint decision with other Team members was to save space by including only one instance of your signature (again, in deference and respect for your postings and signature). If there was a difference in signatures for which you wanted to make a point, I apologize. Unfortunately I do not always have the time to read each and every posting prior to sending out the digest. The decision to edit the signature was made on the basis of (i) your sig was already on one message in its full form (ii) we need to keep the size of the digest manageable for all and (iii) at the time I was roaming in Europe and my roaming charge is murderous, so I had an interest in keeping the digest short without limiting its substance, for monetary reasons (as in your case, nobody subsidizes my phone usage).

I just want to make you aware that, unfortunately, nobody subsidizes the team members and we are more or less in the same boat as you. All of the operators of the digest do this as a labor of love and solidarity with the Psion community (and perhaps a selfish interest as Psion enthusiasts). We all hold jobs, family and other obligations that do not give us as much time as we would like to devote to it. The last two weeks have been exceptionally hectic for me, but yet the digest kept coming with its usual regularity of almost every other day. I believe that the continuity of the digest is more important than if one signature was dropped or not. The commitment level of all Team Members is very high as we all incur expenses in subscribing to special ISP to send out the digest, incur in GPRS charges and devote the time and effort to maintain, program, implement and run the digest.

Having said that, again I apologize for the mishap as it seems that it troubled you, but I also think that we all should take into consideration the efforts and troubles we all go through to keep the digest alive. We cannot force you to contribute and if you wish to unsubscribe, so be it. I will personally miss your contributions very much (including the delightful thoughts for the day). Again, nothing against you. I just wanted to make the point from our side, that of the operator.

Best Regards,

Manuel Campos

May I remind you, dear Owen, of the way I was personally attacked a while ago on this very Digest, just because, as a Frenchman, I belonged to a country not approving of USA's invasion of Irak...I got then strong, off Digest support from many digestees, including Americans, and am today still reading the Psion Bible with gusto almost daily.

So, stick to us and just ignore occasional nasty comments, as the "sage" (wise man) would advise...

I should also like to add that off topic discussions can be rather fun (as long as they do not ramble over and over): it shows we are not solely preoccupied with technology and makes me feel closer to other members, like yourself. And without some humorous remarks here and there, our Digest would soon get boring.

In some dictionaries in TR format, Quickfind doesn't work: typing the first several letters of an entry is not possible. After typing D, the wiew switches to the 1st "D"-entry and If I immediately type AMN it successively goes to A, M etc. or sometimes AMN.

Changing  Quickfind reset delay doesn't seem to change anything except the delay between the unwanted searches... Other dictionaries function perfectly. It doesdn't seem to be a matter of size, nor of whether they are on D nor card-speed nor machine (I tried on 3 machines) (yes, so many people have PSions in my surroundings ;-)

Any idea why it happens and wheteher anything can be done?

Re: GPRS cards in NetBook

>>>I connect my Netbook using a GPRS-enabled mobile phone. Is there any

advantage in using a GPRS card instead?<<<

Ciao Daniele, Ciao All!

The main advantage IMHO is based on the fact that you do not have to worry about infrared/cables and the like. All you have is a standalone machine which enables you to connect seamlessly wherever you are (or, if you prefer, wherever the signal is strong enough). I seem to remember you are using a Wi-Fi card so I expect that you may appreciate this.

BTW, as long as the information I have got is accurate, the only GPRS card which should work well in the netBook is the standard Option Globetrotter GPRS/GSM PCMCIA Card which is available also in a rebranded version marketed by Vodafone (Vodafone Connect Card) as well as a Orange one.

I am actually using the Vodafone branded one, which I got with 4.000 "Vodafone One" fidelity points.

AFAIK the new proposals such as the Globetrotter Combo or the UMTS card are *not* proved to work in the netBook so mind you don't fall into buying them without trying them first. The good news is that the price of the standard Globetrotter is little by little being reduced

all the very best

Actually Windows is the worst program that I've ever used.  OK M$ call it an OS, but it's really just a program running on DOS.

I bought PsiWin 1 and after installing it very quickly removed it.  The DOS Rcom was so much more able.

However I've never had much trouble with 2.x.x apart from on a disabled WinXP laptop that's got no serial port.

I would add that I never sync.  I can't see much point in it.  (apart for company use, when the company should have a better solution available)  A Psion beside a desktop is better to access than having to use the desktop's software.

The not supported message often occurs with missing or incompatible versions of files such as OPXs. When you restored, did you reinstall the OS image and try the default applications before restoring other files?

I suggest you do this and install your other applications rather than just restore from a backup, then restore your documents.

To: George Cooke

>Stay on the Digest. <snip>

Personally I am fed up with the childish criticisms levelled towards you.

OT as the whole sig thing is, some members must be sad individuals to put

down something that represents a bit of personality, originality and effort

on your part. This is being personal and hurtful and those proliferating it

should stop and think of how nasty they are appearing.

If you unsubscribe from this digest Owen, then I will follow, as I feel it

grossly unfair that you have had to put up with such puerile jibes.<

You must be reading a different digest to me. The sig debate has not been about the representation of personality or originality. It was simply about Qwen stating the content of his sig was necessary for people to contact him with up-to date details. As it is his Digest signature it is not Off Topic.

Completely excluding the validity of 'Thoughts' tags, which I have deliberately avoided discussing, the other details were being debated as to their necessity. I don't see how this is a personal / hurtful attack. It is simply discussing some content of his postings. At no point have I noticed anyone direct any personal insults or anything else that can be construed as hurtful towards Owen.

As for him staying on the digest, I think he is a useful contributor and would therefore remain an asset to the digest if he remained, but if he leaves, it is his choice and not because anyone suggested he leave.

If he left because of the debate about his signature, I think it would be a poor decision. I have received criticism in the past and surely will in the future, from digest members, but being criticised would not be a motive for me to unsubscribe. I would only do this when I found no further use to be subscribed.

If you leave because Owen left, your reason would be less valid than the one I mentioned above. You should remember the digest administration have not been involved in the debate, so who would you be protesting against? All you'd be doing is removing someone who supports Owen (for whatever reason Owen needs support?) from the digest. The rest of us wouldn't really notice except the "Sent to:  ### subscribers" number would be different. So what would you achieve? You'd simply lose whatever benefits you had by being subscribed.

p.s. Sorry to all about the length of this post.

Owen quite correctly points out a major drawback of mobile online computing - cost. Personally, I'd find it more interesting to discuss possibilities of how to reduce costs, rather than if certain contributions are interesting in the eyes of other members.

For instance, I have no experience (yet?) of WiFi hotspots. The Revo doesn't do it, and my Wintel notebook can't do it (the battery goes flat after 15 minutes, and it's probably too old to invest in an expensive new battery) Would WiFi be a way to avoid high GSM-charges? I understand some hotspots are free, others not. What might be the members' opinion of which direction WiFi might take? Will there be a proliferation of free hotspots run by private individuals, or will it all end up in the hands of corporates which will charge accordingly?

If WiFi is the way to go, then I would need to consider a replacement of my Revo, after all - so far, I'm hanging on to it with tooth and nail!

Carlos
