Subject: Message from the Digest Team

Dear Subscribers,

After internal consultation between the Team Members it was decided to write this short message.     Unfortunately the discussion about the signatures has evolved into an unfriendly exchange of messages with words like "ass" and "idiot" being used, which is against the few rules we set for the proper running of this digest (see at the bottom of the digest).

In our opinion this discussion has run it's course and everybody's opinions have been aired and read. Unless you have something new to say about this matter and can do so within the rules set for this digest we request you kindly to move on and leave this matter alone now.

When we decided to show Owen's signature only once each digest we did this as we erroneously thought (we did not read right) all signatures were the same. As this is not the case, all his signatures will be published again. Some of you will agree, others will not. Unfortunately such is life. As a Team running the digest we will never be able to please everybody, and we trust you will all understand this. This decision has got nothing to do with Owen's published intention to revalue his membership of this digest, but only with our earlier decision not to censor any part of the digest but for clearly automatic additions to messages bu email programs or work servers.

Let's move back to EPOC matters now.

Best regards,

Itamar Engelsman

Subject: Idiotic examples of signatures!

Hi Folks,

For the attention of Antony Booth:

You diatribe was about 9KB.

A great swathe was given to the example of your signature. At the end of each digest is a plea to send only text. I use my 5mx for all eMail and I prefer text I can understand. I couldn't understand your signature.

You said, rather unnecessarily I thought, that you hoped it wouldn't cost Owen too much.

I can understand Owen's signatures.

You say you have been a member of (do you mean a subscriber to?) this digest for about three years longer than it has existed - I assume you mean you were previously subscribed to UPS5Digest, which was automatic. It had no editor, no management team, no censo rship, nothing other than an owner, James, who also contributed as a subscriber.

When it stopped Itamar started this digest, he is the de facto owner, and it has a management team he appointed. He asked for volunteers to help him run it. I'm pretty sure Owen volunteered (as did I). Perhaps you did too. If the digest management agree that a vote be taken and if it favours inflicted censorship and the management decides to abide by that then I will unsubscribe, probably along with many others.

So far there has been almost no editing and no censorship. I think you are entitled to your opinions as am I. Self-censorship, the kind I indulge in along with Owen and many others, is far better than inflicted censorship.

But I'm glad you say that you don't want to change anything. I don't want anything changed either, and I doubt Owen does. You see, this digest has been free in many senses and that's what I like. There have been many OT threads, there are many wondrous signatures and the vast bulk of the digest *does* concern matters EPOC.

Stripping off signatures, thoughts for the day, quotes, jokes, witty anecdotes or anything else unrelated (unrelated to what - EPOC?) that posters have attached is censoring those posts and implicitly criticising those posters for including them. Such patronage I can happily live without.

I hope this thread will soon die and we can all get back to enjoying this digest.

Happy days,

Phil.

ED> You are very observant!

Not really. Some time ago I setup my mail client (The Bat!) to show this header by default. Mostly out of curiosity but I do get some value from it. I know that if someone posts to me using Outlook Express, there would be little point replying with multiple syllable words. More seriously knowing what mail client someone uses avoids sending an attachment in unsuitable formats.

I totally agree with you. My major concern is that the digest be sent out rather than the the tools used to prepare it. I have no idea how to fix your problem but you have certainly asked the right forum.

The "ED>

understand what you are complaining about. It was not junk text. It is

as legitimate as any other signature.

As for the large quantity of utter gobbledegook you have appended to

revise my opinion of you as a pompous and pedantic ass.  You seem to be

I refer you to the reply to Steve Hodgson.. May I suggest you actually

read the post next time as I have not lectured to anyone. I replied to a

posting made by Owen about the points Owen made. I did not initiate the

thread whatsoever. Using the stereogram was my way of showing how the

size of Owens or anyone else's signature was immaterial to me.

As for the stereogram, I do not apologise for you not knowing what one

is.

Thank you for degenerating the debate about signatures into an insult

throwing competition.

For those that do not know what a stereogram is and do not wish to

appear as ignorant as those above, check this site out:

If the EPOC email application was good enough I certainly would, but I

get approx 200 emails per day, of which 190 are spam. To download these

on my Netbook, even via a LAN connection takes forever. So long in fact

that often, my connection to my mail account closes, even though I am

still connected to the net. I use my PC as a filter so I am left only

with a handful of legitimate emails which the EPOC email app can then

download.

Hot spots are OK if you know where they are and are available where you

want to be, so they are handy but cannot be relied upon. Also, there is

the fact that some hotspots you find aren't actually intended for public

use, but they simply haven’t been secured properly. There is a practice

of marking these WiFi locations called Warchalking, so visit the site,

then get walking around town to see if you can spot any.

Don't get rid of your Revo just yet - even in the age of WiFi it has a lot of functionality you can't find on other machines.

> Would WiFi be a way to avoid high GSM-charges? I understand

When you have access to WiFi, it's great. But when you're on the road, you never know whether you'll find a hotspot or not. GSM, while expensive, definitely provides better coverage, i.e., is much more reliable than WiFi at this point.

I would hope the former, but fear the latter will occur. Several of the free hotspots I used to frequent have disappeared, and are being replaced by pay-as-you-go hotspots. You can buy a card for 10 euros, which gives you 30 minutes of WiFi time. The problem is, many of these cards expire after 30 days, forcing you to unnecessarily consume the time left on the card before it expires.

I think McDonald's is working on a scheme to offer WiFi access with each purchase of a meal, which would actually be quite a good solution given McDonald's global presence.

Let this be a lesson to me to read the Digest daily, not leave it to gather for several days and then try to read several at once!

It has often seemed to me that really bright people can get themselves into quite amazing "arguments" without really meaning anything personal at all. I tend to regard Epoc Digest contributors as jolly clever – they all know what they’re talking about (which is more than I ever do) and this latest saga of signatures has confirmed my belief!

I was enchanted with the stereogram signature – Anthony? – I had never seen a Magic Eye picture on a computer screen before, although I have several (paper) books of them!!

Personally I enjoy the Digest enormously and as for the length – how many people are reading it while on a dial-up costing per-minute? I agree the humour is essential to retain, I agree with whoever it was that said that anyone who unsubscribes themselves is effectively cutting off their own nose to spite their face and I should be very sorry to lose the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of Owen and the others who have publicly supported him. Why they should wish to withdraw their expertise from the hundreds who have not expressed any criticism at all, just to make a point to the few who have is, as usual, beyond me.

So please, can we show kindness & tolerance towards each others’ foibles and welcome everyone back into the "fold" in the interests of all our mutual benefit? What matters is not how vividly we can express our dislike of some particular aspect of another person’s personality but how we can help each other!

Answer to: Jakfish

Re.: AOL IMAP - I think you need the program "SmtpAuth" to use the AOL email. In order for this to run you also have to install Java on your Psion.

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: Rogue Email Accounts - Ah, you did not say before they had the same name. Look through the last few digests as not long ago someone mentioned how to delete the email index file and allow the program to build a new index. If that does not help, you can always delete or move the complete email folder and start up with a new one again. Just remember to first write down your settings. However, hopefully someone else has better ideas.

Re.: WiFi - I am not sure how Wifi will develop. At home I save a lot of money by subscribing to an ADSL line. Now I have fixed costs independent of the time used and bytes transfered, and can use my mBook all over the house with my Wifi-card and wireless network. When traveling I use my modem card wherever possible and only use my GPRS when I have no other solution.

Much has been posted by many on the length of sigs.  This is achieving nothing, so let's just stop posting on this subject... FULL STOP.

I'll however add my support for Owen.

You Psioneers don't know when you are "well off" and have the pleasure of reading an efficient, well balanced informative and entertaining mailing list. I, on the other hand have the dubious

duty of monitoring several "Teddy Bear Lists" for my wife's collectable miniature artist teddy bear business... NOW, there is a challange! it is nothing for these Teddy Bear listees (Collectors and makers alike) to blindly hit reply and send 4 or 5 previous complete posts back to the list and sometimes with the comment "me too" >:-(  private conversations & OT abound! If only, all of my current subscribed lists had the same discipline, nettique, information and entertainment, with thoughts of the day and all, as this EPOC digest... keep up the good work.
