It's much cheaper that way....

Bob,

>>I have a Netbook, Series 7 and 5mx and when I got my Series 7 it would not work with the Travel Modem and I read something, I think on the The Seven Site, http://www.newth.net/psion7/. that they are not compatible. Since then, I have always used a PC Card Modem and it works great.<<

I used a Travel Modem with my Series 7 for years, without any major problems, apart from the odd dropped connection. It may not be problem-free, but it is certainly compatible...

Cheers, Ian.

Way, way back in the mists of time I remember hearing of a similar problem with HELP files (essentially Write-protected Data files with , I think, .hlp as the suffix).

- Have you done a FULL hard reset yet? (Remove ALL batteries, including backup - wait for half an hour...) This would restore the ROM back to it's factory state.

NB This would wipe absolutely everything (files you created) off your C Drive, including any Control Panel Settings, so back up C to a CF card first.

Failing that, if software installed is needing some system files located on the CF card (d:/system/OPX es) and one of these is corrupt, then you may simply have copied over the corrupted file back onto the reformatted CF. In this case, are you able to try reinstalling the problem software so any system files (often shared by other progs) are installed again? Perhaps someone more versed in OPX-type things can enlighten?

George

Plurals - why not? I love it when everyone gets all etymological - brings out the worst in people: FWIW here are my (totally unqualified) suggestions:

Zaurus => Zaura

Psion => Psionz

Sienna => Sienna

Forum => 4rmz (txt lingo, yeh!)

Well, if you are happy with being pedantic, maybe you will not mind me having a go?

>I let this go the first time, but I'm afraid my pedantry can't let it pass a second.  :)<

>Sorry, I know I'm wasting my time...<

"I'm" and "can't" is poor grammar and should only be used when quoting someone. You should type "I am" and "can not" to be grammatically correct. The ellipses terminating the last sentence should be a full stop.

>You two are adding an extra "i" (at least!).<

You may be referring to two people, but have not addressed your message to anyone. If it was to an individual, the word you should have used was "too". Also, the brackets have no place being there and an exclamation mark or a full stop terminate a sentence, not both. That is why an exclamation mark has a full stop at the bottom of it.

>Rgds, <

If this is the word "regards", it is missing an 'r' and 'e' and an 'a'.

>(4 months without EPOC/Psion and not missing it...:)<

Besides the syntax being incorrect, what has this sentence got to do with anything? I do not think there are any prizes available as I am led to believe that all the medals for not having a Psion or any other EPOC based device went to the Etch-A-Sketch fan club.

The phrase: "The pot calling the kettle black" springs to mind. ;-)

This is fun, is it not?

Re.: *** SPAM *** - It is indeed a poor trial of Freeserve, as several of the messages sent to the digest now get this addition. We have not asked for any changes and it is done automatically. I suppose we will have to live with it.

Re.: Alternative PDAs - Thanks for the further update. I suppose no printing is a definite minus for me, I can't always rely on a PC to be at hand to transfer the file to be printed to first.

Subject: Revo Standby Battery Replacement

Hi All,

I have been subscribed to this site for quite some time as an observer and always find the contents interesting and worth while reading. However, I have a problem of my own in that I think the internal button battery needs to be replaced. My question is how do I get into the revo to do this?

Thanks everybody, any help would be appreciated -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While I don't understand everything written in response to my question, I do now understand now that those files refer to the 5mxPro, so I won't need to try and learn anything about them. There are some people on PDA Street who seem to be working on trying to figure out how to change the netBook OS (and Mbook, too, I think). I hope they come up with something although my Mbook works just fine as it is for my purposes.

I would *never* mess about with my Mbook OS unless I knew others were successful AND I were given *explicit* instructions.  :-)

I noticed my posting about ROM had added the spam thing in the subject line. Maybe it's something about my bikerider address which is a forwarding service to my 'real' address.

Moshe,

it looks like it is time for a hard reset of your machine. There must be at least one broken file on either C (RAM) or D (CF). So do the following:

1) !!! Do a complete backup of CF and RAM to a PC !!!

2) Remove the CF and all batteries for some time (2 minutes will be enough). Then put them back in

place. Your machine could come up in its factory configuration. Set time and date and your local

settings manually. Don't put back the CF yet!

3) Try Fn+help. If the "overflow" condition still exists, you have a hardware problem. Let's assume the builtin applications perform as desired.

4) Restore your Documents folder on C and C:\System\Data\contacts.cdb (nothing else). Your

Agenda and Contacts should be back in business. Repeat step 3.

5) Restore the rest of drive C **except** the System folder. Repeat step 3.

6) Remove (or Rename) the System folder on the CF card and put the CF back in place. Repeat step

3.

7) Reinstall (do not restore) the neccessary applications one after the other and repeat step 3 after

each install.

Now you should be able to cure your problem or at least spot the culprit.

Keep us posted!

Hi Itamar,

the onliest thing I can imagine is, that your provider installed a spam fighting program, which automatically adds "***SPAM***", if it finds out, that the subject, the body or the attachment fullfil the SPAM criterions. My provider GMX.DE does it so.

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know my 5mx is back safely from the tender loving care it enjoyed at psionflexi.co.uk. Only time will tell how the re-designed screen cable will last but I have a good feeling about it. Thanks, Paul.

Many thanks!

From: Andy Hayes

Subject: Snaffle / netPad Woes and Cable / Thinning Out

If you haven't tried Snaffle it is well worth a go, although it isn't perfect. This app produces java:netsocket:exception errors, but mostly downloads the website that you point it at OK. It just seems to sometimes lop off the bottom of the page, but I don't know why.

My netPad woes continue. The new battery is failing, suggesting that the charging circuitry seems to have a problem. The warranty has turned out to be worthless as the vendor doesn't respond to calls. Beware of secondhand netPads is my advice. I bought three serial cables for it (minimum order value scam!) but the comms don't work properly between the netPad and GPS. Teklogix don't seem that interested in coming up with a quote for repair at the moment and I have someone who was interested in buying a handful of netPads, but is now thinking that it might not be such a good idea after all and looks like going back to looking at iPaqs. It is such a shame as I know that the netPad, albeit a WinCE flavoured one would be so much better for their project.

All is not lost though, the aging netBook that I bought when they first came out, sold on eBay for £130 ish with an MBook personality module in it instead of the UK one. It was treated well, but time was catching up with it. The screen being noticably dimmer than either of my new ones. Also, my MC218 sold for a surprisingly low £50. I can't complain really though as I have had a few good (non-psion) bargains recently from eBay.

If anyone is looking for a brand new serial cable to allow connection to a PC for a Psion netPad then I will have one for sale at £20 inc postage to the UK. The socket on the netPad is proprietory so this lead is unlikely to fit any other device in the "common" Psion range. I recently found out that the connectors for the netPad are £75 for 5 plus VAT and postage. That makes my offer look like a real treat!

I fear that my question(s) regarding Empower might have got lost in the noise of the sig arguments/debates. I will ask one more time just in case. Firstly does anyone use Empower on this list, a contact management app?

I get the impression that all spam filtering automatic systems are not 100% correct in their selections.  Email with it's ability to 'see before download' is probably the best method.

Antony having seen my posting about Freeserve you will realise that I'm now looking for a new pay-as-you-go account to an 0845 number ISP, but for use with 9600 baud.

Are you saying that Virgin is not suitable?
