I am currently an MC218 user but alas this cannot last forever. I am looking to 'upgrade' to Palm, and have thought of the tungsten T3. However it is rumoured that there is a new Palm coming out soon with a new operating system. Anyone know, is it true and is it likely to be worth waiting for? Peter Burke

I do not know where you went to school. Maybe the school of internet speak? However, I disagree with most of your corrections, but thank you for the effort to educate.

> I think you probably meant ellipsis rather than ellipses - the latter being geometric shapes - do you want the generic equation? <

Please. It may fill the digest out with something interesting you may accidentally include. For the record, that was the damned spell checker that did that. Not I.

> Equally a comment in parentheses [or brackets] {or braces} can have one extra stop (maybe even several!? - that stop is called an "interrobang" - it's a dingbat or flubdub) - meaning is paramount after all.<

Well chosen terminology there. That internet school may have been a spam email offering a degree in Inglishe?

> The "Rgds" probably dates Rick as someone who used eMail in the early days when such shortening saved valuable time in transmission - fewer bytes And when Rick wrote "(4 months without EPOC/Psion and not missing it...:)" the syntax was not incorrect - it was a simple comment using a simple syntax.<

Whatever the history of Ricks, or should I have typed Rckz life, does not make the syntax correct.

The rules of English grammar are constantly evolving, vibrant and wonderful, as with all living languages. Any and all attempts to codify those rules will be temporary or the language they apply to will be dead. The grammar of Shakespearean English, wonderful though Shakespeare's writing is, is not the grammar of Dickensian English nor that of modern English.

Nor that of the Ape man. Thanks for the pointless point.

But I think the comment about the Etch-A-Sketch fan club was uncalled-for and unnecessarily rude.

It was an apt response to someone posting on an EPOC digest about how little he misses having an EPOC device.

>I once read that it was bad 'Netiquette to criticise someone's spelling or grammar unless the criticism was humorous and good-natured - a reasonable recommendation. Rick's comments, even if they were grammatically wrong (and they weren't!), were good-natured and humorous.<

Rick was being unnecessarily pedantic and I decided to let him have a taste of his medicine, as you did with your post. If you felt it should not be done, I suggest you refrain from it yourself before implying not to, to someone else?

You asked "This is fun, is it not?" - no, I think it neither fun nor funny - but I'm glad you do.

Thank you for being glad for me, however, I addressed the message to Rick, so I did not ask you whether it is fun or not. Actually, after many unnecessarily heated debates on various topics on this digest, I care very little for members opinions relating to either etiquette, netiquette, message formatting, signatures or like this post, anything off topic. As this is an almost "Anything goes" forum, except for complaining about something, I feel I must complain about the fact you complained about something and demand the subject be closed by the administrators as complaining leads to a backlash of verbal abuse an accusations, where the complainant is seen as the person at fault. Otherwise, I will spit my dummy out and take my ball home :-D

>Happy days<

I used to like that, but that spin-off with those two love birds was terrible. "Jodi and Chachi" or something? I can not remember.

> Phil (who has no grammar checker and doesn't want one).< ... but thinks he is one ;-)

For those who typically feel absolutely enraged enough to reply with something insulting and derogatory towards myself. Firstly I would suggest you lighten up. If that does not work, bring 'em on. After all, I have done such a terrible thing as reply to someone who posted something to me without bending over enough. :-)

Antony Booth (who has no wooden pecker and doesn't want one) ... but sometimes acts like one. Beat you to it ;-)

p.s. Hey Phil; This is fun.

Subject: Offline Web, 3Lib Meeting

Itamar,

Thanks for posting the relevant EPOC digests to search, which led me to read Steve Truesdale's reply to me ages ago (about Offline Web).

Steve T,

I've just been looking at the PDA version of usatoday.com site on my Psion, using settings you kindly suggested in that reply (all those moons ago), and Offline web has worked as it should do.  Hurrah!

Except: From what I've seen, it's a *very* small site, and I still can't get other sites to work.  (I did try various different configurations, including "yes" and "no" to "Follow external links". *STOP PRESS*

I have just succesfully downloaded and browsed www.seinfeldscripts.com offline on my Psion!  (This is a very simple, static archive (much like our own well-loved www.psioneering.co.uk))

Although I think Offline Web would be perfect for storing the previous EPOC digests, I would be unable to search them in any meaningful way (eg search all digests for appearances of the word "ribbon cable".)

It now looks like Offline Web will work, but only for the very simplest websites.  There are plenty of very good simple websites, but there are also plenty of very good websites that are a bit more complex.  I reasonably expected to be able to see both!

Steve L,

I work on Trafalgar Square, so pubs near "my" office are central and therefore easier for most to get to.  I would happily ask at a few pubs if they could host the next 3Lib meeting.  What do they need to satisfy us?  (I assume a meeting room.)   What do we need to satisfy them? (I assume a guaranteed turnout.)

Everyone else:  It's in everyone's own interest to have the 3Lib meeting near them - so we should *all* be selfish!  We should each ask at our local locals, to see if they will host the next one.

This would be a human version of "distributed networking".  We could call"Search for Eateries That Invite Psioneers and Other Assorted PDA Users, Even Pocket PC"

Cheers,

Richard

There ISN"T a standby internal button backup battery in the Revo/Plus/Mako.

Once the level of the AAA NiMH cells get to a certain level, the machine won't turn on and THEY provide the power to sustain the contents of the memory.  Once the NiMHs are dead, the contents of the memory are lost (you

do backup, don't you).  It was silly of Psion to have non-user replaceable NiMHs in the firstplace, but if they had a non-rechargeable button cell in there too, there would be so many units out there with dead button cells.

There was once an article online about an *experiement* where a backup battery was added to the revo, but it wasn't feasible.

Thanks Ian, This is the problem I am having , the battery went flat and now I cannot get it to switch on even when I recharge the battery.I was under the impression that there was an internal battery as when external power is applied, the case gets warm in the area around the series of breather holes in the underside of the case.I still would like to open it up just to check inside , does anybody know how I can do this?

>> Re.: TomTom CityMaps - I am pretty sure that the newest versions have not been issued for EPOC machines anymore. I still use Streetplanner Millenium and TomTom Routeplanner. At the time when TomTom Citymaps were introduced I asked Palmtop about the differences with Streetplanner and they admitted they were cosmetic only so I did not invest in the latest version for EPOC. Did anyone ever try whether or not the maps of the latest versions will work on a Psion ? <<

I bought CityMaps to get better and more maps -- in Denmark (outside Copenhagen) the switch was from lousy coverage to thin coverage... The application was not updated (much), but I can confirm that everything works fine. I agree it seems you have to buy a PocketPC in order to get updated maps. Not expensive, looks like a much better application because country maps and street maps have been combined, but with only one-fourth the screen real-estate of a NetBook (one-half of a 5mx), ouch!

Try Ebay.  I bought a spare there recently. There were a number of UK models going for about £100. Not sure about USA models though (Is there a difference?)

Answer to: Wong Koi Hin & David

Re.: Revo Battery - The REVO only has one battery paack and no back-up battery. If it needs to be replaced you can contact the usual addresses like POS in the UK or others in Germany, Canada and I think still in the USA.

Answer to: Bob

Re.: Series 7 and IR Travel Modem - I would like to repeat that a modem card will work a lot better, faster and easier with your S7 than the IR modem. They are very cheaply available on for example eBay. When typing this they were going for just over 10 pounds

Answer to: Andy Hayes

Re.: MalayBook vs netBook Personalities - After I bought my mBook I thought about it as well and decided that my S7 was not upgradeable either and that my mBook was functioning well and doing what I need it to do. Accordingly I decided not to try and upgrade it at all. Last night I prepared and sent out the last digest in front of the TV while watching the football (soccer) highlights and sent it out via my ADSL line and my Wifi card. As you rightly write, what would such an upgrade give me that I can't do now ?

Answer to: Chris Handley

Re.: vendor - In general I would be careful in mentioning names and writing that in such a case you would or would not buy from the vendor. Someone else might well read mistakenly think it is a fact and thereby avoiding the vendor for no reason if it is untrue. I am sure you did not mean any harm at all, but one should be careful with these matters.

Answer to: Emily Rutili Lemer

Re.: repair & purchase 5mx - For repair someone recently told the digest about a repair place in Canada. Alternatively, you can try POS in London. As to purchasing one, believe it or not, Clove Technology (www.clove.co.uk) still have new ones in limited supply for sale at Gbp 195.- + VAT (which you will not pay buying from NY). They write these are being remanufactured in the UK and have a 6 month warranty. Alternatively, search on eBay and other sites that sell 2nd hand goods.

Answer to: Philip S. Adkins Potter

Re.: Contact Loader - No, this program allows you to manage multiple contact files but is not a contact management program. If you want to use your Agenda for your Contact Management without any other program, this is very well possible too, although without integration with Email or Contacts. More details in the next Psion Computer Magazine.

Greetings!

Philip S. Adkins Potter quoted:

My dictionary tells me that a divining rod is the same as a dowsing rod, and trust me, there's nothing religious about that.

I'm not too good at finding water with one, but my father can even tell how deep it is.

(My best results is with two thick metal wires, one in each hand, with copper tubing as handles)

That's what TomTom wrote me as well a while ago. However, I understand that Version 3.x of the software has an auto-switch function and the maps are

newer and more detailed. There ar afaIk 2 versions of Citymaps: one on 1,

the other on 2 CDs. Question is whether the "New Edition" (2-cd?) still has

Epoc software.

As for the map-format, it might be interchangeable between versions... would

be logical... Just the System-folder they reside in is another...

Subject: Hard reset solves what?, Colour screens

Clever people 1,

If a Psion has a long-running problem, how does it help to take a copy of the C drive, format it and copy everything back onto it?  Surely the problem is in the data storage, and if you copy identical files back onto the C drive, nothing has *actually* changed?

Clever people 2,

Does anyone know of an app. that switch off the screen of 7/netBook, while keeping the Psion on.  When copying over large amounts of data, but not looking at the screen, it seems silly to waste the battery (and perhaps the life of the screen.)

Cheers,

Richard
