Hi,

Very interesting to hear about Gary Jenkinson's decision to go back to

EPOC from the PPC 2003 machine he recently bought. Guess what I have

recently decided to switch to Windows 2003 Mobile courtesy of the Ipaq

4350 away from the 5mx. The 5mx is a great machine and a superb OS and

the testament to this is its loyal following. It really beats me as to

why the 5mx model was not further developed because it definitely had a

niche market and much potential but maybe that’s what the problem was,

that market was never going to challenge Palm or PPC and was always

going to be niche (if anyone knows why Psion left the PDA market, or the

inside story to Psions departure, I'd be interested). Funny really that

Ipaq should now bring out a device with a built in keyboard, finally a

decent battery life and great connectivity. I am expecting delivery

tomorrow so I hope to give you all a review (that’s if you are

interested!!) in a couple of weeks of whether I can live with the ipaq

functionality or lack of it from the perspective of an ex Siena, 3c, 5,

revo and 5mx user.

PS. Gary you said that you couldn't put up with the small screen, well

apparently Mobile 2003 will very soon be releasing upgrades which allow

recent PPC machines to easily switch between portrait and landscape

without having to do a soft reset. There are also pdas which are coming

out with full vga as opposed to the traditional QVGA screen (see Toshiba

e830).

Answer to: Bob

Re.: Wireless Connection - If you did not touch the Cisco settings in the Ethernet settings option in Control Panel it should work "out of the box". If you did change them, contact me off digest and I'll send you how it is configured on my mBook.

Answer to: Keith Giles

Re.: Cell Phones - No end to it ?  Sure there is. One day you will be wired up to your brains and your thoughts will be transmitted by wireless connection to someone else's brain ..... hmmmm ..... dangerous !

Answer to: Chris Cooper

Re.: Psion's stake in Symbian - I don't think that many consumers choose the Symbian OS by choice, I don't think they know the name Symbian at all. People choose phones because of their looks and for what they can do for them. I wouldn't even know which phone actually uses Symbian and which one not.

Answer to: Thomas F. VAN DER ZIJDEN

Re.: Hotspots at Starbucks - I have noticed signs in one or two Starbucks in London, but indeed you have to pay. How do you check whether or not email does work, just try to connect with your Wifi card in the Psion ?  And how do you know which SMTP you can use at a certain hotspot to send mail ?

I am one of those suffering from digest truncation. Sounds like Wanadoo need to be called WanaDon't. Some kind soul from the list kindly fowarded his from his email account to my Freeserve account to which the digest sends the message. His arrived OK, but the one sent by the digest team doesn't.

Sorry to hear about your netPad Tim. Mine has gone the same way. I had a new battery not long ago under the "sort of warranty" warranty. I wonder if there is a charging fault that is plagueing us both. Teklogix have contacted me to advise me of the pin-outs of the netPad serial cable, so there is life out there after all. When the leg becomes more wobbly on the kitchen table I will be able to use the netPad to level it up. Its sod all use for anything else.

Bob, I have a Cisco350 that works perfectly. Best of luck.

I have had to cancel the order for my Mac Powerbook due to a personal problem :-( The books from Amazon are still on there way so I will ahve a very small consolation.

Mac - Viruses. A friend advised me that when he went to one of the offices that he was responsible for looking after the equipment, every Mac (probably about 12) had a virus. I know its rare, but it does happen.

I can sympathise with your attempts to change to another OS Gary. I tried all sorts, but alongside EPOC, and nothing worked. You have the same buying methods as me - buy everything that you think that you might ever need. Problem is that it will all have to be sold at a huge loss :-(

David, thanks for the heads-up on the NetGear ADSL modem/Wireless router. I have found one - Linksys WAG54G. It will have to go on hold at the moment until things sort themselves out.

I have not been able to get KillTask or Ferme Tout macros working. Ferme Tout seems to need something added into it to work. Here is the code: -

REM FERME TOUS LES FICHIERS

Include "Macro.oph"

PROC Macro:

BgSystem:

SendKeyCode:(Ctl%+%q,Shift%+Ctrl%,1)

FgCurrent:

ENDP

Can someone tell me what I need to add to close any and all apps that are running except the app that calls this macro? The calling app will be CronTab as a matter of interest.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a laptop. Trying to use the net on a netbook has got worse over the months, slower, with more complex sites, slower and more difficulty accessing certain secure sites, slowing to a crawl due to worms/viruses etc (Sink2 reporting attempts to connect to port 445 every 7 seconds), crashing Opera when certain animated graphics pop up on sites. The netBook is a fantastic tool, but a serious web machine it was never designed to be.>

Yes, I've been getting more and more concerned with the fact my S7 is having increasing trouble accessing many sites as they become more sophisticated, which is a shame.  I too feel I will soon have to make a move to a laptop for access to modern web sites - do let us know how you get on with your Mac in due course.

For all:

Chopped off Digest

Has anyone else looked at the list of subject lines at the top of the Digest and then realised they have only received part of the whole thing after scrolling down to the end of it?  I checked when I realised my copy was getting smaller and smaller - the last one (number 519) was cut off by at least half :-(

* Any info on a Netbook Pro running Linux ?

Am I not seeing any discussion on this on the digest any longer ?

Hasn't McDonalds deployed WiFi hotspots, not that I am suggesting you ever visit a McDonalds? I might be suggesting you visit a McDonalds car park and see if you can leech from there?

Many UK ISPs have an 0845 number that is 1p per minute from a landline, many of which do not even require you to setup an account. Using a mobile, will probably incur the normal dialup rate. You would need to check that with whatever mobile service provider you select, but you can shop around for a pay-as-you-go sim card. Mobile calls are normally charged per second, but the first few minutes are the most expensive. Some charge a higher rate for data calls too!

I use Virgin mobile, who sell pay-as-you-go cards for £10.00 with £5.00 credit on it. They charge 15p per min for the 1st 5 mins, then 10p per minute for dialing local rate numbers like 0845s. They charge per second, and round up to the nearest penny. Data rates are the same as voice rates.

Below is an example account free dialup ISP: -

Name: BB Internet

Web: www.bbinternet.net

Tel: 0845 123 1613

username: bbinternet401

password: bbinternet

smtp: mail.bbinternet.net

Does anyone have any experience with ESD not working under a similar situation?

Do I need to ensure that all applications are closed down?  Should I even be checking the C Drive on a netBook? <

I have no experience with ESD but to run EDU's Check Disk all programs on the drive that is to be checked have to be closed or disabled (Alarm+). So you can check drive D (or E) when programs are running on C but if you want to check drive C everything has to be closed down.
