Seen on the Nisus list:
> There are Windows devotees out there who say that it is only because > the popularity of Windows makes it the coveted target for the obscure > fame'n'glory that comes with writing a successful virus
"Wishful thinking on their part. Given the market share of Windoze vs. Mac,
there should be about fifty times as many Mac viruses as there are. This came from:
- In Nov. 02 Symantec told me there were over 14,000 known Windoze viruses.
This means they're appearing at the rate of ~40/week, so right now the number should be 17,000.
- There are less than 20 known Mac viruses, and so far none for OS X. Macs have ~5% market share, although practically it's more because a lot of
Wintel machines go directly to Linux, without running their built in Windoze.
- 5% of 17K is 850. With the actual number being less than 2% of that, the
lack of viruses is primarily due to some other factor besides market share."

Anders,
>> The documentation delivered with my new Mbook treats charging of the powerpack in only brief words. I feel somewhat uncertain about charging times/overcharging/using the mbook on external power. Is it possible to overcharge, or is the system "intelligent", switching to trickle carging when the battery is full? <<
I've happily left my netbook on overnight without any problems. I think its charging circuitry is intelligent enough to deal with most situations.
>> ... Thus I intend to buy a Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP-3 card that is said to be mbook/WEP-compatible. Anyone with experience on this one?<<
I've been using one for the last year, and am very happy with it; so happy, in fact, that I bought a spare one, just in case they stopped making them now that the next generation of WiFi products are available.
Moshe,
>> Is "backup" a program? If so, do you know where it is available from? And can it still be registered?
....
Would you have a suggestion for backing up the CF on a 5mx? <<
An excellent backup program is FastBackup, which is available from www.freepoc.org.
>> By the way, what is 'incremental' backup? <<
An incremental backup is much quicker than a "full" backup. Instead of copying all files from ie. C: to E:, only the files which have been changed or been moved are backed up. Any files which have been deleted are also deleted from the backup, so that, at least in theory, the backup is an exact copy of the original data. This can be achieved by a full backup, but takes much longer, as the amount of data, even on something as efficient as a Psion, can be quite large.
Hope this helps, cheers, Ian.

Re
1- Backpsionwelt.de/ralphsprenger/
manages backups (incremental and possible archiving of "deleted" files) & restore when wanted.
2- With a 5 I'ld suggest backing C: to a "specific backup" CF in D: *after* having saved personnal documents files and some essential to keep (such as a ziper and... Backup) system files
from your usual everyday CF D: to C:
Of course one'll have to delete all these d/files from C: after backup. ---------+

It has been said here & elsewhere that 1 or 2 hours "over"charging after the front light goes green is necessary to complete a charge. I never read about drawback if charging more than that.
It's usual to shorten batterie life expectancy by NOT draining it totally (which looks rather difficult to perform with a 7/nB).
2- >>> I use the Cisco 342 card........ I'll not take the risk of disabeling the WEP-encryption. Thus I intend to buy a Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP-3 <<<
Re:
This Buffalo card drains very low power from the nB.
One advantage of the 340 is precisely that it's the simplest & NONWEP. 128WEP could be a non connect issue; is a feeble, even false "security" and looks rather superfluous on (nastiesproof)Epoc .

Subject: Viruses, Mac or otherwise
Hi Folks,
When Timothy's friend said there had been no viruses found on most Mac in years I thought you all ought to know something - or at least Tiscali users.
According to Tiscali (soon to go - they threaten to sue me for non-payment despite having been paid) my Mac is not a Mac as it is infected with a PC virus.
This was because I reported receiving an infected eMail masquerading as a returned eMail from a non-existent mail server. It had an exe file attached. It was Tiscali who told me that the mail server didn't exist but they insisted my (non-existent) PC sent it without my knowledge. Tiscali are *sure* that I have this Windows virus on my Mac - which means it isn't a Mac!
Essentially this means that Tiscali *know* what machines their customers are using by divine revelation - and they're all PCs. If you think it's EPOC, Mac, Linux, Palm or anything else then you're wrong.
I believe eMail headers actually identify the sending machine, but I can no longer be bothered.
Happy days,
Phil.

Andy,
Sorry about the display in responding to this post. At this time I
would suggest there is little point in getting AV software for OS X.
If I remember correctly, David Pogue who writes 'Missing Manuals' for
Apple products reckoned there was little point. Certainly when I
receive a viral attachment on a non-Windows box, there is never any
real threat.
Firewall software may have more value, particularly if you are not
using a dynamic IP address. I guess OS X may look similar to a unix
box. There is a basic firewall built in to OS X but may also be other
third-party apps.

Thanks for the reply Jack regarding FermeTout.opl macro.
REM FERME TOUS LES FICHIERS
Include "Macro.oph"
PROC Macro:
BgSystem:
SendKeyCode:(Ctl%+%q,Shift%+Ctrl%,1)
FgCurrent:
ENDP<<<<
I changed the q to an e. I also noticed the lack of an R in CTL :-) which I corrected.
I still get a "procedure not found" error which points to the end of the "BgSystem" line. C'mon guys (and gals) I know that there are some clever macro writers out there. How do I write, or where do I find, a macro that will close all of the running apps with the **exception** of the one that calls it (CronTab).
Itamar. Where did you send your support email to regarding chopped digests? I would like to moan at them as I really dont want to have to get another email address.

I would just add that it may be worth downloading the free
application MacJanitor as does all of this for you through a GUI if
you wish.
The other essential free Mac utility I would recommend is TinkerTool.
It won't give you an EPOC interface but the customisation it provides
can be very useful.

There is an interesting two-part review of the netBook Pro on Foxpop (http://www.foxpop.co.uk/roadtesting/netbook_05.htm although this link didn't work tonight). Not a promising review though. I did also stumble across another (forgotten where) review that was similarly negative.
As an aside, it is sad to see that Foxpop is closing down. It was an excellent resource for all PDA types. Perhaps this explains my missing link above.

Hi Anders,
I just checked the card I am using and it is the buffalo. It works fine with my Mbook and actiontec broadband gateway. I have not tried the WEP encryption as I have not considered it necessary in my location.
