Dear all

Sorry to hear the news of Darryl Kemspster's murder in South Africa, and condolences to the family. Unfortunately, violent crime is an unpleasant daily constant over here (have been hijacked at gunpoint twice myself). Being continually vigilant is thus a necessity as many criminals are opportunistic and disuaded when one is aware. In spite of this, there is much beauty and many resources in favour of staying here.

One easy way to get there is to make sure the address toolbar is showing in Windows Explorer and type in %temp% in the address bar, hit enter.  This will take you right to your temp folder.  If you're still on Win95, no address bar, so Start->Run, type %temp% and hit OK.  That's all versions of Windows but 3.11 and earlier covered...   :)

Re.: TomTom CityMaps .sis - A remark and couple of questions. In the last EPOC Tomtom Routeplanner there is the option "File" and "Show maps". This option will show for example on the French map which towns you have on your Psion as well by showing the area darker. Would this not take away part of your reason for creating the overlay ?   As to my questions, for what version of the TomTom routeplanner is this process possible ?  Is this up to teh very latest versions ? Are these .SIS files not created for Symbian v.6 and higher and not for our Psions or are these the same ?  And finally, do you think the maps are that significantly better that it is worth to purchase the program just for the maps (as the program we cannot use on our Psions) ?

Must admit that I was shocked and saddened to read this.  Darryl was a regular contributor and had been a Psion user for many years.  It was always interesting to see his posts that said "Currently on tour with X in Y" where X was a band/production and Y was some exotic sounding location.  I had some correspondence with him a few years back when he sent me a knowledge base to put on my web site.  I never actually got around to doing this - but will do so in the next couple of days in his name and memory.

Subject: Moonclock woes

Hi All,

All this talk about Moonclock convinced me that my membership in the Psion nation could be questioned if I did not rush to download and install it on my 5mx. So I did, and I have lived to regret it. When I finished installing the program  I soft reset the 5mx according to the instructions. Then I tried to open it, but received the message that the Disk (C, though I had installed on D) was corrupted. Soft resets did not help, so I had to reformat Disk C and restore from the great life-saver FastBackup, losing a few days' data. I would really like to know why the disk was corrupted; have I done something wrong? Will be grateful for any ideas.

Greetings

Moshe

The piece makes great reading - details I always wanted to know! Thanks a lot!

Btw:

A sad coincidence of place... let this be a hommage:...

Jorge Ramos replied a few months ago as I was asking for advice for a Psion-convert friend of mine visiting SA. In that (partly off-digest) exchange he said among other very helpful details (Jorge, I do hope you do not mind my quoting you... thanks...):

Subject: Sorting on Sheet

Fellow Psionistas:

I have been, at the forced suggestion of my accountant, keeping closer tabs on tax deductible expenses. I decided to do that on the Psion, via Sheet. However, being human nature, and specially mine, lazy, I enter the expenses not necessarily on the same day or in order, therefore I would like to ask if there is a function in Sheet that will allow you to sort by date.

For example the entries are:

Date Type Amount

29/06/2004 Airfare $200

24/06/2004 Taxi $23

What I would like is that, even if the line items are entered in disarray (not in perfect chronological order), that the function sorts them by date and I get something like this:

Date Type Amount

24/06/2004 Taxi $23

29/06/2004 Airfare $200

Any answers will be appreciated.

Sorry Itamar, I thought from your comments that you wanted to add voice instructions.

I also find that my eMap works very well with Psions and the various apps I have on the Psion.  But sound on a Psion is not adequate for voice instructions, especially as I drive Land Rovers which are not the quietest cars.

The 2610 has most of what's in use here on Psions and as you say the cables are a problem with using a Psion/GPS combination, which does not apply to the 2610.  If my eMap keeps working (I've no reason to say it wont), then I'll continue to take it with me everywhere I go and have a 2610 in a motorhome which will soon replace my car, now that I'm retired.

The colour touch screen on a 2610 is much larger than a Palmtop, which I would find much too small.  I've seen them in use with a GPS and can't see how folk rave so much about them with their petite screen.  It's like looking at a paper map through a small magnifying glass, you can only see a small area.  Not suitable for driving, but possibly OK for walking.

Stephen

I have been using a S5 to do this in a fashion for follow up and billing purposes for some time now my method is simple to suit my needs perhaps you can adapt it to suit your needs

As an Architect I usually refer to a client by their job address

So any meeting, site inspection, or time spent working on their particular project is entered in my agenda with street name and occasionally client surname

Then Ctrl Shift Z to open word with details of activity inserted into agenda item

If any follow up is required the agenda item gets a FU placed at the end of the street and surname heading and a note added to the word insert .

(that way every so often usually about Friday morning I check FUs  by doing a Ctrl f  for "FU" over the last couple of weeks or so.

Then when Billing time comes around usually about once a month or so I decide who is to be billed for last months activities  and do a Ctrl f on site and/or surname  All is revealed in a dated list

Ctrl Shift z again and my notes are revealed with time spent as well Once that activity has been billed a B is entered after the name or FU

or before the FU if the FU has not been carried out.

It works for me but if an easier method turns up I'd be interested to here about it .

Subject: Holiday power

Could any of our well-travelled Digestees help me? We are planning a holiday in Switzerland and, of course, this would not be complete without my trusty Psion! Originally I thought I’d just take enough batteries but then the question of recharging our mobile phones reared its head as well. So I looked into European power supplies, plugs adaptors etc and have become completely confused....

I found that Switzerland’s power supply is 220V, 50Hz with a 3 round pin, lozenge-shaped socket but the web sites I looked at talked about grounded and ungrounded plugs, converters, transformers and seemed to indicate that there are actually several different shaped wall sockets .... I got bewildered by the sheer volume of information!

We live in the UK and have the British standard three flat pin plugs with varying instructions as follows:

Psion’s own AC230V, 50Hz, 90mA output 6V 1A

Another one for use with a Psion AC 100-240V, 50/60Hz, 180mA output DC6V 1300mA

Nokia ACP 7X (mine) AC230V +-10%, 50 Hz, 21mA Output 3.7V, 355mA

Nokia ACP-12X (his) AC 100-240V, 50-80Hz, 125mA output 5.7V, 800mA

So it looked to my simple brain that if I took the non-Psion-branded mains lead and both phone chargers they would work OK but I would need a UK-Swiss adaptor, something no-one seemed to offer. Do I actually need a UK-European adaptor & then another one to convert European to Swiss? If so, are they available in the UK or should I wait until we get there? Am I right about not needing transformers/converters?

Any assistance in this will be very gratefully received - and I'll send you a postcard when we get there!

Thanks

Cathy
