Subject: Re: WindowsXP and Psiwin 2.3.3
Thanks everyone for the info on my WindowsXP and Psiwin. I bought my adapter
cable a couple years ago so that I would have it if I needed it. I got it
from Proporta---not sure if they will take it back now. I will try some of
the suggestions and see what happens. One thing that I noticed is that
usually when you install Psiwin, which I have been using since it
first came out with the Series 5, it always asks you to name your
Psion---this time it doesn't and that is probably why it won't recognize
it. I will check the ports again--did check them once, but will try
again. Thanks everyone.
Thanks,
Bob

Subject: Ericsson phones
I have happily run my Ericsson SH888 with infra-red with my Psion 5 and my
netBook for email connection. (And internet on netBook but I do very little
of that).
Now I note that Sony-Ericsson do Epoc driven mobile phones running things
like TomeRaider. Eg P800, P900. Will these also act as IR contacts for my
netBook and Ps5?
I use 3 pay-as-you-go Sims with the SH888 simply on account of the vagaries
of reception here in Scotland. Do the Px000 etc also offer changeable PAYG
chips?
Where would I see reviews of these phones?

Subject: 5mx backlight failure and stylus clip
ChrisI run www.psionflexi.co.uk and can offer a more competitive price and a
flexi without the tooling hole flaw in the original (see the web
site). The symptoms you describe are typical of a broken flexi. If you have
any questions please email meI can also look at the
stylus clip when the machine is being fixed and see if it can be fixed. I do
get spares from time to time also.

Chris,

another post. The stylus won't stay in its holder. It meets a bit of
springiness when I push it all the way in, but it doesn't click into place.>>
<<Yes, I *have* tried inserting my fingernail into the appointed slot next to
the serial port. Absolutely no use.>>
I can't imagine a fingernail long enough or flat enough to do the job. I use
a thin steak knife myself and have never had it fail. I do sweat bullets
worrying about collateral damage but so far so good here. Good luckthere.

Elementary, my dear Watson.
Yes but, as always, I'm a bit lost in the discussion about GPS-navigation
1) First, on which Psions is it possible? Is it sufficient with a
5mx/5mxPro/MC218 although b/w? Or does one need a mBook or nBook?
2) Which GPS-hardware can be used? And how do they connect to the Psions?3)
What software is available As an old map freak, I wouldn't dream of beeing
directed by a computer. But moving maps would be fun.
And least of all in cities. It seems that the software you have been talking
about is basically city maps. But the countryside in between would be fun.
Now, are there really any good maps for that? If it is to be of any interest
it should go down to at least 1:500 000, like the ICAO-maps, or 1: 250 000
like the better air navigation maps. The Swedish Land Survey
(Lantm?teriverket) offers its whole output down to 1:20 000, admittedly as
subscriptions at a hefty price, and it seems only in the PC or Pocket PC
format. How about the other maps?
Axel
PS Rather ashamed of asking. What is the difference between 5mx/5mxPro/MC218
anyway?

The 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II was ?164.90 including VAT and the prices are always
coming down (I bought my 512MB card for ?225!). I bought it on-line at GMK
Sales Limited - www.gmkbatteries.co.uk.
Maybe if you have to ask the price you understand how to budget!

Sorry Bob you're so wrong. XP with USB are 'pot luck'. It will work on one
system and not on another and no one knows why. I've been trying for 18
months and still no luck.

Beware of using oil products around plastics. The oil can make the plastic go
brittle. Remember, plastic is an oil-based product. Silicon grease would
lubricate it and not attack the plastic. Vegetable oil would probably also be
OK.

Subject: Netbook with Orinoco Card won't connect:
I have an Mbook and bought an Orinoco Silver Wireless card to connect to my
WiFi router, which is a 2wire router furnished by and connected to
SBC/Yahoo DSL . I bought the Orinoco cared, since it is explicitly sited in
the Mbook and I had read that some people found it works "right out of the
box" After a good deal of consultation with both SBC/Yahoo and Dell, I
finally have both my desktop and my Dell Latitude 600 laptop configured to
work with the 2wire router. But I can't seem to connect the Mbook. In
response to an earlier query to this list, Chris Holly, who uses the same
router and SBC/Yahoo, kindly sent me the settings that he successfully uses
with his Cisco-Aironet 340 card. (See
attachment). I've tried installing these, but without success. SBC tech
support is wonderful - but only supports PC and Macs, not even Linux, so I
can't turn to them for help. Here are my current settings, which may no
longer quite match the ones Chris gave me since I've been experimenting
with changes in hopes of getting the connection to work: Ethernet
Settings:Name: My Mbook; Configuration method: DHCP; Hostname: 2wire### (last
3 digits of SN, as SBC insructs - though I'm not sure this is where they
intend for me to put this.) Device: Lucent WaveLAN / Orinoco Card.
Under Options within Ethernet Settings: Basic:Wavelan Network Name: 2wire###;
Peer to Peer Mode: not checked.
Advanced: AP density: low; Transmit rate: 11.0 Mbps Encryption ##########
(10 digit no. from router)
Internet Service Settings: Current Internet Servic: SBC Yahoo (or my normal
ISP - the college where I teach);
Show connection dialog: Checked; If idle, stay on line: 10 minutes; On exit,
stay on line for 5 minutes.
Under Edit: Name: SBC Yahoo; Connection type: Direct (rather than
Dialup) Account Username and Password: (As directed by SBC); Addresses: I
checked both Get IPaddress and Get DNS address from server. I did
not check "Use Login Script"
Under Advanced: I checked both 'Enable PPP extensions" and "Allow plain text
authentication".
I think that covers everything. Can anyone see what I might have done wrong?

Subject: Re: Epoc Digest V1 # 562 (7)
Thanks for all the help guys, no success so far. I have tried most of the
suggestions and my next step is to try another adapter. If it doesn't
work, I can still download stuff from the web and all that I just won't be
able to syncronize any more. I would like it to work as I really like
Mobipocket. When installing Psiwin, you should get the "identify your
machine" prompt.
I don't get that, so without it, you will not be able to connect. Maybe a
different connector will work. I do have a recepticle that looks like a
small serial port and I think it is, but its for a monitor. My Psion
connector won't fit as they are both the same with no pins on either. I
just thought of something, not sure if it will work, but I might be able to
put my Microdrive the the card slot on my laptop and download Mobipocket
stuff there and put it back in my Psions?????
Again thanks for your help.
Thanks,
Bob
