Having done that, I seem to be generating an interest in upgrading to
CityMaps. From the various postings I gather I can use my StreetPlanner
Europe (Millenium upgrade) and use the "acquire the .sis file" technique to
get the .sis files from CityMaps into my 5mx, run the file(s) then move the
city folder to System\Apps\Street. I'm assuming the CityMaps app itself
doesn't run (or not well) on a Psion, so therefore should continue using
StreetPlanner. Am I way off on this?

Then there is the problem of acquiring the app. The TomTom site doesn't seem
to carry CiyMaps (except for Paris). Expansys has it - they list several
"versions" (Palm, Pocket PC) - all the same price. I assume it's really just
the same CD no matter which version you want.

Am I correct in my assumptions about using CityMaps with StreetPlanner and
all versions are the same?

Subject: RCOM and DOS for 5mx

In reply to Larch's questions on RCOM:
There are ways to make the RCOM software work with a 5mx: there are several
versions of RCOM around and I think that my Series 5 (not mx) CDROM included
an ini file for using the program with the Series 5. In truth, RCOM is a bit
tricky to use. I have used an older program from Psion called RFM "Remote
File Manager" with DOS. Look for  "RFM110.zip" Install it as in the included
directions on your DOS machine, then connect your 5mx and turn the link on,
if the connection is successfull (correct port and baud rate) you can then
use a DOS filemanager to do operations on the Psion. I use XTree Gold for
this purpose. You can even read text files on your Psion without having to
copy them to your desktop machine. The only drawback is that the old 8.3
filename conventions apply and any files that you transfer to the DOS box
with long file names will be truncated. The speed of RFM, if I recall
correctly, cannot be more than 19,200. I wish that I could patch the program
to 56kbs! For a rather complete discussion of RCOM see the following website.

Subject: calling SmtpAuth with Macro5

OK, making progress. I grasped more than I thought, after reviewing Keith
Giles helpful page of tips (Thanks, Keith and Susan for emailing that to me).
Now my macro does start Email (Z:\System\Apps\MsgApp\MsgApp.app, I think. I
cant see the Z folder unless I am in macro5) but it won't start SmtpAuth
(C:\System\Apps\SmtpAuth\SmtpAuth.app). It says it is Not Supported. However,
when I go to SmtpAuth.app and click on it in the system folder, it starts
right up. I though maybe I needed to get the JVM going first, but I can't
figure out how to do that. It will save me countless "technical support"
calls from my wife if every time she opens her Psion, these two programs
would start automatically. I'll keep taking any help anyone hs for me.
Thanks.  --Chris

If you know the communications protocol the drive uses, I think it would be
possible to tranfer files to and from the drive using Comms. It might even be
possible to write a script to make the process more user friendly, but it
would be a lot more difficult to give the OS direct access to the drive as,
say drive F or something.

I'm sure there are several if you can find them. I remember using ProComm
amongst others back in the dark ages. Failing that, you could pack the files
as ZIP archives on the laptop and use RMRzip, Navigator or one of the other
Epoc ZIP archive utilities to unpack the archive on the Psion.

It would help if you told us:

1.
What Internet service you intend to use.

2.
What hardware you intend to use. I.e:
a) A landline modem connected to the Psion
b) A landline modem connected to a PC
c) The Internet connection your PC uses
d) A mobile phone.
Details of make and model of the above would be useful as well as the OS
version in the case of a PC or Mac. In the case of a landline modem, we would
also need to know whether it is connected to the Psion by cable or infrared.

Re.: Macro 5 How to question - I just wonder, why don't you just leave the
applications open ?  I have about 6 or 7 applications that are open all the
time (Email, Agenda, Macro5, Assistant, Crontab, Chadis, Merlin amongst
others). How often does your wife have to do a reset that you need to open
these programs up again ? The beauty of the Psions is the "instant on" effect
where upon switch on your programs are just there.

Subject: Panasonic GD70

Howdy!

Someone has offered me a second hand Panasonic GD70 phone and I have some
questions before I take the plunge.

1: I understand this phone has an IR port. Will it work as an IR modem with
my Psion?

2: If so, could someone please send me the modem settings?

3. Does the phone work with Phoneman?

4. Can I beam contacts between the phone and Psion like I do with my Ericsson
T39m?

5. What OS does the phone use?

6. Can I beam photos taken with this phone to the Psion for storage or
e-mailing?

7. Can I convert a photo from my digital camera to a format compatible with
the phone, copy it to the phone from the Psion and/or PC and display it on
the phone?

8. What options are there for connecting the phone to a WindoZe 2000 PC for
transfer of photos, contacts etc?

9. Are there any quality- or other issues with this phone I should know about?

PS. I need to make a quick decision, so replies with a CC to my private
e-mail address would be welcome.

PPS. Before directing me to a web page, please remember that my only access
to the www is by getting in my dinghy and rowing ashore and walking to an
Internet café.

I have a copy or RCom Version 1.16f © Copyright Psion PLC 1994, is there a
later version?

It works just fine when I remember to set the baud rate at 19,200 on my
Psion.  I've only used it for transferring files between an old laptop and I
just enter rcom.exe at the command prompt.  Thereafter rcom is pretty DOS

copy rcom.ini r:

will copy rcom.ini to my Psion.

Help - this is the continuing story of my quest to regain the usefulness of
my Revo following my computer's complete lack of willingness to talk to it
since Christmas.

I have now acquired another computer.  I know that this computer can talk to
my Revo - it connects properly, I can see the Revo on it and all looks good.

I then go to synchronise with Outlook and I get the error "failed to open
Outlook" at the stage after it's opened agenda and contacts on the revo.

I have checked everything I can think of, but it still refuses to be able to
open Outlook.  What am I doing wrong?

When I got my Psion 5 I was told that it could communicate with RCOM, but
they were never able to tell me how; nor could I get it to work.

I had also bought PsiWin 1.0, but shortly after installing it, removed it.  I
classed it as a 'rubbish' program, compared with the superb RCOM (when used
with a collection of batch files in my DOS menu program).  So I can
understand your reluctance to using PsiWin.

I still wish there was an RCOM that would work with EPOC, as it could be
automated with batch files.

RCOM is a lot like DOS; if the amount of development that has gone into
windows had gone into DOS, we would have a far better OS than windows.  If
RCOM had been developed on a developed DOS, then it also would be much better
than PsiWin.

But we live in a silly world were laptops don't have serial ports, stopping
thousands of folk using expensive serial linked products; and no decent
replacement for our most capable EPOC Psions.

I used PsiWin 2.1 with the 5 and now the last version with W98, but can't get
my XP laptop without a serial port to work.  Other than this I have no other
problems with PsiWin.
