Hi List,

I am back to Germany from my 3 week's trip to Ireland.

Thanks to all people from the list who were willing to send the missing maps from Northern Ireland and for the travel tips that we received.

For Owen (and all others who are interested) I have prepared a small *temporary* website at http://psion.uh-lab.de/owen

since I cannot send him pics via mail - he and others may watch them when in an internet cafe cheaper than via GSM-mail. They include  a pic from my MC218=5mx built into the rented car (with a modified mobile car holder, screwless, just with tape and a ~vacuum-hook~), pics from a 1912 CMC Chalmers Oldtimer, and Pictures from Malahide. Why Malahide?

We were looking for a place to stay for the evening before our departure close to Dublin airport. Viewing the map, my gaze got stuck at Malahide, just north of Dublin. Malahide? Malahide??

I've read that name often, soon I remembered the EPOC digest. A little search on my Digest database reveiled: LD-53°27.37'N 6°09.16'W Malahide, Ireland - so we went to search a B&B there and succeded.

We enjoyed to be in Malahide on our last evening in Ireland. We liked the place and the pubs.

We wouldn't have gone there without Owen's mentioned GPS locations in his debated EPOC Digest footer. (Please no more discussion on that). Thanks for that. We just have been there a little late to meet him personally. Sometime we will, someplace, eventually ...

With greetings from Germany

Is there a possibility of accessing the internet via this setup using a MBook? What sort of hardware interface would I need?  Our stays in Canada are short enough that I can do without email, but if I can get internet access, I can pursue the POP backdoor into my email via Earthlink.<<

It sounds like they've set up a town-wide Ethernet network, with free access; very nice. I imagine that all you need is a Psion-compatible Ethernet card, a suitable Ethernet cable, and some information regarding the logging on procedure (username, password etc.).

Cheers, Ian.

Hi all,

due to growing  dissolutionment with tapping on a tiny on screen keyboard, I've spent an hour learnlng the jot handwriting recognition system.

I hated the fact that the keyboard robbed me of half the screen and was very small and fiddly.

Jot is actually pretty cool and with a little practise you can work quickly without having to concentrate on the screen.

The screen protector is certainly earning it's keep but to a cynical ex-psion user like myself this is quite a revelation!.

At Heathrow airport T4 I noticed at the Dixon's store a JVC small notebook hardly larger than the netBook. It has a full working windows system, 256 mb memory and 40 Gb harddisk. If someone is looking to replace the netBook with a small notebook and a smartphone this could be for you, however the price is steep, Gbp 1,399.-. I took a photo with my palm but can't read the details on it  <GB, what would you expect>

Answer to: Manuel Campos Galvan

Re.: Nokia 9300 - Thanks for these details. Can someone in plain language explain the difference between the Nokia 9500 and 9300 ? And how does the available software compare with what is / will be (as far as can be predicted of course) with the UIQ phones like the P800/900/910 ? Maybe most important, what do you think about the size of the phone ? Does it just slip in a pocket or not ?       Mike, does the Nokia really has all the "office" programs we have on our Psions ?  Do they have an alternative to MBMView to view faxes in TIF format that came in on the office computer and sent on to my Psion ?

Answer to: Keith Giles

Re.: Wendat - Open the OPL file, translate it to .OPO file by hitting the translate button. Activate the program and enter a date. It will give you the alternative dates for all the different ones mentioned.

Re.: A wanderer returns - Hi Alan, welcome back !!  You are struggling with the same question a many of us are now struggling with. It is one of the reasons we recently decided to expand the digest to include Symbian operated machines as well. i think Steve Lichtfield wrote a good introduction on his website with plenty of details about the operating systems. AFAIK the Symbian ones do have file structures like EPOC only you need third party software to get to it, which does exist. Is it really multiple tasking ? I think it is. Ask your questions in the digest and we wil all get the wiser by it. We can help each other along in making the right decisions.

Answer to: Martin Guthrie - Well, I for one never got 8 hours out of my S7 or mBook batteries. It never worked beyond the 5 to 6 hours.

>>>Jack, I downloaded the file - wendat-opl.s5, but there's no readme. Just what does one do with it and how do you work it?<<<

Open the opl with Program; read the first lines, then Translate (Ctl+l);

Launch the wendat-opo file,

Choose any date, Enter, Choose any of the 14 calendars, Enter

This shows the equivalent of any religious time with any of the other calendars... and no more, as Itamar wrote in previous TheDigest.

I found this little opo nice enought until i receive Itamar's updated Luach.

Subject: P 910 - Synching with PC

Hello Everybody,

I have been seeing many posts lately indicating that P910 to be a sort of 'Dream Smartphone'. As a former Psion (3a, 3c, 218 - 1995-2002) and current Palm (Treo 90- 2002 to date) user, I am interested to know how the synching with the PC (Windows 98) is likely to be. Will that be as cumbersome as old Psions, or as a breeze as in the case of Palms? May I have some views of users please?

Thanks ans Regards

Hi,

on the 9210 can you define your own folders in the email application?. For instance on my email program on my pc in addition to inbox/outbox/sent/draft etc I like to call a folder 'letter rack' and any email or sms (on my Revo+) that I want to keep I can file separately there.

Also with the Nokia version of PsiWin, can you browse the phone and mmc card as if it was a separate drive in windows explorer?.

Also will file formats offer to convert automatically to pc formats when being copied across when on cable connection like with PsiWin?.

Thanks,

Mike Dyer.

Subject: Itamars Palm & Phone Replacement

Hi,

Itamar after using the p800 for a while now as a pda and phone. I would definitely recommend the p900/910 as a replacement for your current palm and phone combination.

I have managed to source a case with a clear plastic window and belt clip so I can use the p800 entirely as a normal phone with no compromise whatsoever.

All of the major functions are available 'flip closed' which is awesome when you need to fire off a quick reply or just check an appointment. The voice recorder and camera are also available 'flip closed'.

With just the purchase of 'Active Desk' so all your appointments, messages, and tasks are available at a glance as soon as you open the flip the p800/900/910 definitely would replace your palm as well.

No Question!.

I intend keeping my p800 a couple of years now as I have spent about £300 on it all told and I want a return on my investment. But like Nokia I hate touchscreens (although the p800's screen is faultless) and I want a keyboarded clamshell.

Just not one the size of the present Communicator.

Also once you have tried GPRS you won't want to go back to 9.6k dial-up I assure you.

Regards,

Mike Dyer.

Subject: Why not buy a new 5mx?

My 4 year old Psion5mx is still going well, no sign yet of screen cable failure. When it does happen I'll get it replaced with one of the new redesigned screen cables.

Noting that there's nothing on the horizon which looks like a tempting new machine to replace it, I just bought another one from one of Clove Technology's occasional production runs (built from spares). Should help to keep me going until the market returns to making sensible fully-featured PDAs as opposed to gimmick-ridden PC accessories.

I recently ran into an old friend and Psion user, and mentioned that I'd just bought another 5mx as a keep-me-going spare. "Me too", he said, "The current PDA market is rubbish".

Clove seem to sell off their runs of "new" 5mx's pretty quickly, so there must be plenty of users out there who still see no reasonable forward migration route.

I've not been conscious of any mention of battery in the Nokia 5300 discussion. How long does it last? Is it a rechargeable (I guess that's an idiotic question these days). Is it replaceable or is it like the Revo/Mako (ugh)?

Subject: File exchange between 5mx and SE Z600

Hi

I've now ended up with a Sony Ericsson Z600 phone which works fine as a modem for my 5mx.

As some of you know, this phone has a camera, BlueTooth and an Infrared port. I've successfully beamed contacts between the 5mx and phone, but I have not been able to transfer photos or other files one way or the other. I have some photos on the phone that I would like to copy to the Psion and a photo of the correct resolution (courtesy of Photoshop) that I would like to copy to the phone and use as wallpaper. Is there anything I can install on the Psion and/or phone to make the two talk? I know I can buy a BlueTooth whatsit for the PC, but I would prefer not going via the PC if I can help it.

While I'm at it, I know I can buy and install more games on the phone if I like, but is there any useful software available for it? Freeware/Shareware/Commercial?

PS. Is there any Symbian in this phone?

Subject: Opera on the p800

Hi all,

I've just loaded up the Opera browser off the multimedia cd that accompanies the p800 (it's FREE)  :o)

It's taken me a month...

Quite frankly I'm astonished.

Last time I used Opera on a pda it was on my Revo+, it was slow, buggy and would crash within about 10 minutes of use on average. I actually preferred WEB if I needed to mobile surf.

The p800 version is wonderful though, especially coupled with GPRS, I've installed it to my 128MB memory stick.

Mobile surfing is actually now a pleasure  :o0

Opera reformats the pages on the fly to fit the p800's screen, strips out unnecessary graphics as well, it is very fast, and very stable.

WOW,

My new toy continues to impress although I know in my heart I now want a 9300 communicator for it's keyboard and all round Revoplussness  :o)

Mike Dyer.

Now that there are many reviews available on the Net on the upcoming 9500 I really think that Nokia have come up trumps this time with a decent PDA at last to replace my much missed 5mx.  I'm really looking forwards to its impending availablity and I'm sure the Digest will continue to flourish as hopefully many of us upgrade to wonderful machines like this!  Psion's legacy to the modern PDA lives on within Symbian :-)

Much as I like my new laptop, for me there is no substitute for an instant on clamshell with modern features to access your info quickly from anywhere on the move.
