Subject: P910 - multiple apps ?

Well, it arrived abt. 1 hour ago. First impression is a very clear screen, phone somewhat larger than my T610, slightly too heavy for a shirt pocket (never carried my phone that way anyhow) but surely possible to put in inside of jacket or trouser pocket.   Copied my contacts over from the T610, first problem is that all contacts which had both a Work and a Home phone number appear on the P910 as two separate contacts <sigh>, ie some work to be done there.   Instruction booklet is heavy, abt. 200 pages, and one does need to read it as it is not that easy to just pick it up and start using it.

One interesting info I found on page 15 of the instruction booklet : "The current application automatically closes and the data is saved when you return to the stancby view or switch to another application".  So it appears after all that you can't have more than one application open at a time (just tlike the Palm) ?

Stay tuned for updates as I get along.

Re.: Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard - Thanks for the update. Even though with bluetooth you don't have to allign the two, you must still be able to see the screen. Can you follow the screen sitting on a chair with the screen on the coffee table ?

It appears that there has been a problem with digest no. 608 as several subscribers complained they did not receive it. We don't know what has caused the problem, but if you would like to get a copy please send a message to the usual digest address with the words COPY DIGEST 608 in the subject field.

As to the operator, we are working with 5 different operators on a rotation basis. In general the subscriber will not notice who is the operator at any time, but only if one of us makes a mistake and uses the incorrect "From" address.

NOTE FROM ADMIN
I didn't want to edit Itamar's post so I'll just add some info.

We have no idea of who did receive Digest # 608 and who didn't, but a lot af subscribers have mailed us. So I decided to resend the Digest to all subscribers, which mean that some of you will receive it once more. However, I hope you'll understand that it is a lot easier to do it that way, than to deal with 2-300 individual requests.

Hi Folks,

Steve Hodgson is not the only one missing an issue (608). I assumed I was the only one as my eAddress might have been misbehaving - but I found out yesterday (Sunday) that it hadn't.

Happy days,
Phil.

Hi Jan,
I tried to download the Emailviewer on my T610 after reading yours or someone's note about it, when I try to down load it from the Web site using my WAP browser in TZones, it says "not acceptable" just like the Webviewer. Am I doing something wrong in my process???????

Thanks,
Bob

Re netBook (and 5, 5mx, Mako) screen cleaning. I use one of those spray bottles of laptop & computer screen cleaners. It says anti-static and alcohol and ammonia free. Haven't had any problems.

With Alan's breath and Itamar's underwear, what in the world is the Psion world we coming to? Chris, that's not underarm is it? :-)

About a month ago I ordered TomTom CityMaps-Europe after getting instructions, via the Digest, on how to extract the .sis files. While the Expansys web site said available in 4-6 days, turned out they were on backorder from their warehouse in France. After getting the 2 CDs I happened to check the Expansys web site and see they are now discontinued. So I guess I bought at the right time. So far I've installed 84 different .sis files. Can't say 84 different cities, because each .sis file covers cities in a large ares. Quite different from what I had with StreetPlanner.

I've upgraded to the new FastBackup and it really works fast. I find that for some reason or other the macro I wrote for the previous FastBackup (to run both of my 2 profiles) doesn't work completely. It fails to change the action to profiles and stops. I can continue from there manually. Does anyone have a macro that works?

Some years ago with my 3C I had a psion 3 tips database file.  I've since lost that file and don't recall where it came from.  Anyway the writer explaned an 'old
photographers trick' for cleaning lences...to use nose oil.  He said it worked for cleaning psion screens as well.  what is nose oil?  Well, if you rub your finger on the side of your nose it gets an oily film (depending on how much dairy products you comsume.)  This is applied (with your finger) to the screen.

I'm not saying you should do this...just passing it on...

Subject: P910i - Phone

Up until now I have almost mastered the phone part of the P910i. I have to admit it is not all that great. I transfered the contact details from my T610 over and needed 3 to 4 hours to make corrections as the phone numbers did not transfer to the correct place (I had names and numbers only ). The speeddial numbers were quick and easy to set up. I added voice dial to some of the numbers, and it is now possible to give a voice dial to one of the numbers of a contact while at the T610 you first had to enter the contact and than whether you want to call the "house" or "work" number.
A first big negative is that while I succeeded in pairing the phone with my BMW bluetooth, I cannot get the phonebook to work and on the car control it gives "Phone book empty". I checked the website and it appears there is a problem with BMW bluetooth but it is not described in detail. I sent an email to customer support, who knows when I will receive an answer.
On my T610 I had handy shortcuts to the most used functions which I as yet did not find om the P910. The T610 had many more ringtones which on the P910 seem to be very limited. What is important again is that the quality of the sound is better.

Subject: P910i - Initial PDA reaction

I came from a SE NX73V palm machine and not from a Psion (still using my mBook as usual of course). My initial reactions are a little disappointing as it appears that you cannot run more than one application at the same time. Opening one stops the other, just like with the Palms.   With my old PDA when I was in a certain application and switched the machine off, upon switching it on again the PDA was still in the same program. Not so with the P910. Whenever you close the flip or it switches off by itself you are returned to the main screen with the llist of applications. That is as far as I got yesterday. It might of course be that these matters can be changed with settings, I don't know yet.
I did notice that the P910i comes with Quickword, Quicksheet and PDF+ pre-installed and AFAIK licensed.
Now I first have to get the connection with the PC up and running to transfer some data and my diary over.

Thanks again to Chris Handley. I followed his suggestion to add a pause before the SendKey in my macro to run FastBackup. The problem, I think, was that I had several apps set not to close for backups. This delayed things so that without the pause the macro was finished before FastBackup had time to try and close the apps then move on when they wouldn't close. Just found his latest update to get rid of a bug - the macro works fine with the latest version.

Hi all,
as an update to my earlier news on this product, once paired with the phone you never have to fire up the keyboard program again on the phone.

As soon as you open the keyboard up with bluetooth enabled on the phone you can start typing straight away.

It's a nice product.

Mike Dyer.

It would appear from this Digest (hence why I've used it in the Subject: field) that many did not get 608.  I've already reported to The Digest that I get the Digest sent to two e-mail addresses and 608 was missing from both.

I notice that some Digests have a bracketed number added and mine are probably always different.  Does this indicate that I got 610 in batches 6 & 13?

Look at those who have reported no 608, but a long gap, and maybe a batch (or two?) got lost.  If so just resend that batch(es) to all in it.

Subject: P910i - Calendar

Yesterday I connected my new phone to the PC at work and did a synchronisation with Outlook after first doing a synchronisation with my Palm. In general it worked well, but I now see more and more how "spoiled" we are / were with our EPOC machines. The calendar is missing several quite essential features :

1/ there is no list view.
2/ there is no "go to date" function to jump to a specific date
3/ there is no entry without time. There is an "appointment", a "reminder" and an "all day" event. The last one highlights all the times in a vertical line.
4/ there is no "to-do" in the calendar program, these are in a separate program called "Tasks" and can be copied or moved to the calendar. This will than show in the calendar as a reminder. However, and this is a big minus, reminders do not move from day to day if you don't take care of them as in the EPOC agenda. You will loose sight of it as it stays on the due date only (in EPOC when a TO-Do shows up and  you don't do anything, it will show again the next day and the next day, etc. until you either delete it or give it a new due date). It means you have to look at two programs and leave them in the Task program.

CORRECTION :  After downloading and installing SMan, the recommended free file manager, I now noted that programs do stay in memory when exiting them without closing. Interestingly enough, most resident programs (id not check them all yet) do not have a "quit" function and stay in memory until you remove them with the help of the Task manager in SMan.
