Subject: Digest Tips
I've noticed in the last few digests that the previous Tips which appeared at the bottom of each Digest has been replaced by a simple notice at the beginning of each Digest which gives a link for the Tips. www.psioneering.co.uk/digests/Tips.html
That link doesn't work - at least on my browser. I went to the Psioneering home page and worked my way through to the Tips section. Here's the URL I ended with: www.psioneering.co.uk/digests/Tips.txt
Don't know if this is pertinent for others or not.
One other item re the Psioneering site - I think it would help a great deal if the words which are a link were either in a different color or were underlined. I'm not complaining, you understand, just a gentle critique.

Answer to Kevin Thorne on # 616:
Dear Mr Thorne, dear Kevin:
Addressing my comments on the new OQO (mini laptop running Windows XP) you
wrote:
"I've got the perfect machine for your requirements above - it's called the
Psion 5mx ;-) You can get one (made up from new parts) from Clove every now
and then."
Apparently my message was too long, since it seems that you missed the part
of my message where I write that I actually own a MC 218.
I guessed that people writing on the digest are more Epoc-savvy than I am
(and in general, more PC - savvy) and then thought that everybody knows the
MC 218.
For the ones who do not, the Ericsson MC 218 was produced by Psion and is a
perfect clone to the 5 MX.
On the plus side, it has a trifle more memory (but still it is split in ROM
and RAM, therefore it is not like the 5 MX pro) than the orignial 5 MX, it
comes with a couple of extra nifty application and works very easily with an
old (and cheap now) Ericsson R 520.
On the negative side, the layout of some keys is confusing to say the least,
but you have all the French (and nordic languages) characters you need.
More to the point, I bought it brand new in an Ericsson shop (now Sony
Ericsson shop, of course) near my house for 420 € (290 GBP at today exchange
rate) in Aug. 2001 when the 5 MX six months before was still about 750 €.
I broke the screen cable, like any good Psioneer should do, and POP repaired
no problem.
So my ranting that it would be nice to have a machine that ... meant a
daughter of the 5MX/MC 218, with hi res colour screen, hi performance Li
battery, Bluetooth, WiFi, and all the trimmings that are now standard.
Just like half of the (more savvy) people have been writing on the Digest
for about three years!
No pun intended, cheers to everybody on the Digest,

A full page review of the OQO is in the latest addition of Forbes. They loved the form factor but didn't like the keyboard or slow system. TG

Rubbish. My P800's is the only diary application I use which *doesn't* use untimed. Even my Palm has the concept. You can have timed, all day, or untimed.
Where else do you put birthdays for goodness' sake?
>And I don't think that the v.Calendar exchange

It goes to 8am from my netbook to P800 via IR.

Re.: Various P910 - Thanks for your lengthy answer. Let me touch on a few points :
- I transfered my phonebook from the T610 by copying it to the SIM card and than on the P910 copying it back from the SIM card into the phonebook on the phone. If there is a better way, please let the digest know for future reference for other subscribers.
- The T610 links voice commands to the user, and if you have more than one phone number for that user (Work and Home) you than have to specify that before it will dial out. The P910 is better in that it llinks the voice command to each number, on the other hand it means you need to remember which command you gave to each number .....
- Ringtones I understand, but I am not as "internet wise" as some others and search the internet that much. I liked very much the oldfashioned ring tone on my T610. Can I copy that to my P910 ? How ?
- I understand your explanation about not opening again on the same program. I realise that I will have to "settle" for that, but I was trying to describe my experiences of switching over from one to the other.
- Agenda, ok, will refrase it to "I miss several for me quite essential features". As you might have read, partially solved by "Handy Day".
- List view in diary, you are right. I mixed it up with my NX73V which does have a list view, which you can also sort per "Category".
- "Go to date" function you answered "It's easy to enter dates using a keyboard - simply type the numbers". I've lost you here, at what stage do you type in these numbers ?
- Untimed entries, incorrect, the NX73V diary also has untimed entries. I used the untimed entries to put the Jewish date at the top of each day as well as some other useful data concerning certain dates on the Jewish Calendar. Now it occupies the spot from 8 - 9 am.
- As to Tasks you wrote "allow people to display tasks in Calendar on a per-task basis". How do you choose whether a task should be displayed in the Calendar or not ?
- You also wrote "Those who mention the report on each day, right up to the 20th" but misunderstood me. As Handy Day does, i want a task to be reminded AFTER the 20th each day until I have completed the task to remind me I still did not do it and am late with it.

Re.: Contributions - I noted your opinion about Rolf B. I just wanted to voice a different opinion that although I also remember his reaction with Route Planner I think that overal Rolf B. does contribute to the digest with sometimes unmatched expertise in settings, modems, etc. and sometimes with valid and interesting opinions, even though I might not always agree. Other messages (about Windows) I just skip. In the end, the digest is meant to be read selectively, you will never be interested in all the messages. However, let's try not to give comments about our likes and dislikes of other subscribers, we all have the same rights as subscribers. And in answer to your remark "but what does Rolf B add to this Digest that is on topic or in reply to a question with helpful advise", just look at his answer to me on the same digest.

Re.: Using of phones - Yes, the usage of SMS has got "out of hand" in Europe. We still very "old fashioned" eat a family meal almost every evening, at which time mobile phones are banned and we communicate (not always succesfully <G>) verbally with each other ! I actually hate it sitting with other people and all the time this one is on the phone and than that one, etc. Wehn I come home, I switch my mobile off (or put it in Flight mode), I can be reached at home.

Re.: psion5 toolbar - I forgot whether or not this works on the 5 as well, but it sometimes happens on my mBook and than recalibrating the screen solves the problem.

Subject: Ringtones T610->P910
Hi Itamar,
to copy the T610 ringtones to my P910, how about beaming them to your Psion, switch the SIM card to the P910, and beam them to the P910 from the Psion?
By the way, I just bought a T610, but it had just one ringtone on it. Could you mail me some of your's?
Best regards,

Subject: Personalities (Digest 616)
Hi Folks,
I honestly think any personal criticism on the Digest, whoever it comes from or is directed to, is unwanted.
I've been guilty of this myself and it can end up as a "flame war", something thankfully rare in the EPOC world. This digest has avoided that so far and I, for one, am glad.
There is much on this digest I have no interest in - I have no mobile phone for start nor do I use, or need to use, GPS. There are also things I disagree with sometimes vehemently. If it's a personal issue I will only take it up with the other person. If it is not a personal issue I might post to the Digest about it.
I wouldn't want this digest (or anything else actually) censored and I both believe and hope it won't happen. But making a public issue of a disagreement about content or tone of posts is bound to raise such an ugly spectre - to the dismay of many including the Digest management team.
Disagreement is a spice, a spice of life. Let it thrive but never let it get out of hand yourself - leave that for others.
Happy days,
Phil.
